• SQL Server 2008 - "Enhanced read-ahead and scan"?

  Hi all, Can anyone point me to, or does anyone know what this "feature" of SQL Server is? Googling for it (also for "Super scan" which seems to be a synonym for the feature) reveals no information other than all the edition comparison pages that exist out there for SQL Server. I'm also not sure whether this is a stackoverflow or a serverfault question. I'll try here on serverfault first, but if folk think stackoverflow may be a better forum, drop me a comment to that effect - ta :-)

• Destination host unreachable - Windows Server 2008

  Hi There, I'm working with a windows 2008 domain controller, which I'm having issues connecting to internet resources. A small bit of background, this is a 2008 domain controller that has been added into an existing Win 2k domain, with a goal of replacing the older computers. Both of the older controllers can still access internet resources, and so can all the clients. When I ping Google.ca from the new server, it does resolve to an ip address, but then says "Reply from 192.168.123.20: Destination host unreachable." I'm really at a lost now, I've checked and rechecked my ip configuration, the default gateway is my router, the primary DNS server is the my DC, and the secondary DNS is also my router. The DNS server on the domain has a forwarder added for the router as well. Everything on my local network works just fine, all my internal resources can be resolved. For the time being, I've stopped the Firewall service. I'm not 100% used to Server 2008 yet, but it might be a case of just missing something simple. Thanks for your time.

• Are spurious TCP connections on port 53 a problem?

  I run a server which amongst other things uses tinydns for DNS and axfrdns for handling transfer requests from our secondary DNS (another system). I understand that tinydns uses port 53 on UDP and axfrdns uses port 53 on TCP. I've configured axfrdns to only allow connections from my agreed secondary host. I run logcheck to monitor my logs and every day I see spurious connections on port 53 (TCP) from seemingly random hosts. They usually turn out to be from ADSL connections. My question is; are these innocent requests or a security risk? I am happy to block repeat offenders using iptables but don't want to block innocent users of one of the websites I host. • Lock down a site using Forms Auth in IIS7 with Windows Auth

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application that uses Forms Authentication. We are using Windows Server 2008. I need to lock down the site so that only certain users (in AD Groups) can access the site. Unfortunately, though, when I set the site to not allow anon users and use windows authentication, due to the integration of the site and IIS, it shows the user as signed in as their domain account, instead of allowing them to sign in through Forms Auth. So, I need a mixed mode authentication. I need the site to be only accessible through windows auth, without anon users, but once you are in, it needs to use forms auth only. How would I go about doing this the right way?

  When I log on using correct user name\password (I always copy-paste them) I get 401.1 error. User name and password are correct (user is created on server locally, not a domain one). I can run program as this user (runas /noprofile /user:tmp notepad.exe). Basic authorization's default domain is a server name, realm is empty. I've saved FailedReqLogFile. AUTH_BASIC_LOGON_FAILED shows ErrorCode="Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. • SNMPD running but not listening for connections at random

  OS: CentOS release 5.7 (Final) Net-SNMP: net-snmp-5.3.2.2-14.el5_7.1 (from RPM) Periodically my NMS notifies me that SNMP has gone down on this machine. The service is restored in between 10 to 30 minutes. My NMS also pings and check SSH and those services are not affected during the SNMP outage. SNMPD log file shows that it is working and apparently receiving packets (either from local agents from 127.0.0.1 or from my NMS at 172.16.37.37) however attempting to snmpwalk locally or from the NMS system fails with a timeout. I have 7 of these servers running mixture of CentOS 5.7 and RHEL 5.7 with this specific version of Net-SNMP installed from RPM - none of them have this issue except this one. 5 of the machines (including the NMS system and this problem server) are in the same rack connected using one switch. Restarting SNMPD does not fix the issue - it clears up by itself eventually. Any suggestions where I can begin diagnosing the issue? It's a closed subnet so IPTables is not used.   This is my first time setting a VPN. Clients can connect but can't ping other machines. This is certainly a route problem but i can't find the right way to configure it. Here is a sample example of the two LANS i want to connect: So, i want machines from 192.168.1.0/24 being able to connect with 192.168.0.0/24 as if they were on the same network. For the VPN network, i would like to use the 10.0.0.0/24 range. • Running perfmon continuously with periodic reports

  I have a question very similar to this one, but I want to continuously run perfmon, during reboots and throughout the day. Further, I'd like to generate a perfmon report every 10 mins or so. The original question tells me how to run perfmon when the server is restarted, but I don't know how to make perfmon continuously run while throwing periodic files. I've tried setting it as a scheduled task that needs to be done every 10 mins, but this is too sloppy, and when the scheduled task kicks another instance, the current perfmon report writer crashes, and I get a garbage report. I've also tried writing a sloppy batch script that would fire off the task at scheduled intervals, but this is the same problem as the scheduled task. I'm sure I'm just missing something silly, but I don't see it. Ideas? (If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 locally, and I'm trying to set up the processes for boxes running Windows 2008.)

• Redmine subversion won't ignore certificate error even if told

  I have set up a copy of Redmine through the Bitnami Redmine Stack and am having trouble accessing a remote SVN repository through https. The trouble seems to be related to the fact that I don't have a signed certificate, and the certificate provided doesn't match the host name (I am accessing the same server through a number of host names). I am new to Ruby, Mongrel, Rails and Redmine. Following the advice in this forum thread, I changed the path Redmine uses to invoke the svn client in \apps\redmine\lib\ redmine\scm\adapters\subversion_adapter.rb from SVN_BIN = "svn" to SVN_BIN = "svn --trust-server-cert --non-interactive --config-dir c:/user/temp" I was hoping that the --trust-server-cert option would fix the certificate problem. However, I am still getting the following error message in mongrel.log: svn: OPTIONS of 'https://server.xyz:8443/svn/reponame': Server certificate verification failed: certificate issued for a different hostname, issuer is not trusted (https://server.xyz:8443) Does anybody know what to do about this? Additional info: I re-started the mongrel service after each change I am sure the configuration change has taken effect because subversion has created a full configuration directory in c:\user\temp I can access the remote repository using command line svn no problem The remote repository runs on a Windows box with VisualSVN

I have Google'd this and get too many variations with a lot of forum threads stating the syntax doesn't work. I just want that the 3 pc set like gateway 192.168.1.100, are filter by squid proxy loaded in win2008 so in win2008 I 've set in control panel the proxy 192.168.1.100:3128 and in win2008 browser work, the connection is filtered by proxy, but in 3 pc not works, so maybe I should route all incoming request into squid, but I dunno how ... thanks

  Hi, I rather foolishly undertook to install a control panel on a Linode. I opted to use CentOs 5.5 (either ordinary or 64 bit) but I am like a monkey playing a reward game... I have some idea of what I am doing, but not enough.... In certain areas I am hopeless....do I install Webmin/virtualmin, or ISP Config..... ISP Config 2 or 3? I would employ someone to help, but how do i find the right person? Where can i learn the ropes on all this? There seems to be no systematic training, and even when I try to research college courses in the UK, I am none the wiser as to where I could go to learn how to run a Linux server..... Has anyone any pointers? Right now I am looking at th esecurity aspects of the server.....rkhunter , denyhosts etc... Any advice on installing and maintaining these things? Cheers marcus

I can run Sentry in the command line and view it correctly in the browser but when it comes to supervisor I am completely in the dark. • Unix LVM: how to resize root lvm

  I took over a virtual server at work after a co-worker left. He, however, setup the server incorrectly at multiple stages and im cleaning them up as I run into them... Currently I realized that the file system is broken in half onto 2 logical volumes both at 50gb. One is mounted as the root directory and the other as the /home directory. Saddly, the server has taken up 46gb of the root lv and i need to expand it. I have already shrunk and remounted the home lv. I resized the root lv, but I can't figure out how to unmount the root directory while the computer is on. Obviously this needs to be done before I can finalize the expansion, but I don't know how. I'd appreciate any help or pointing in the right direction. Thanks in advance. PS this is on a CentOS server.

• PHP pages working slow from time to time

  I have VPS with limit of 2GB of ram and 8 CPU cores. I have 5 sites on that VPS (one of them is just for testing, no visitors exept me). All 5 sites are image galleries, like wallpaper sites. Last week I noticed problem on one site (main domain, used for name servers, and also with most traffic, visitors). That site has two image galleries, one is old static html gallery made few years ago and another, main, is powered by ZENPhoto CMS. Also I have that same gallery CMS on another two sites on that same VPS (on one running site and on one just for testing site). On other two sites I have diferent PHP driven gallery. Problem is that after some time (it vary from 10 minutes to few hours after apache restart), loading of pages on main site becomes very slow, or I get 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error. So pages becomes unavailable. But just that part with new CMS gallery, old part of site with static html pages are working fast and just fine. Also other two sites with same CMS gallery and other two with different PHP driven gallery are working fine and fast at the same time. I thought it must be something with CMS on that main site, because other sites are working nice. Then I tryed to open contact and guest book pages on that main site which are outside of that CMS but also PHP pages, and they do not load too, but that same contact php scipts are working on other sites at the same time. So, when site starts to hangs, ONLY PHP generated content is not working, like I said other static pages are working. And, ONLY on that one main site I have problems. Then I need to restart Apache, after restart everything is vorking nice and fast, for some time, than again, just PHP pages on main site are becomming slower. If I do not restart apache that slowness take some time (several minutes, hours, depending ot traffic) and during that time PHP diven content is loading very slow or unavailable on that site. After sime time, on moments everything start to work and is fast again for some time, and again. In hours with more traffic PHP content is loading slowly or it is unavailable, in hours with less traffic it is sometimes fast and sometimes little bit slower than usually. And ones again, only on that main site, and only PHP driven pages, static pages are working fast even in most traffic hours also other sites with even same CMS are working fast. Currently I have about 7000 unique visitors on that site but site worked nice even with 11500 visitors per day. And about 17000 in total visitors on VPS, all sites ( about 3 pages per unique visitor).   I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.
