  • Bad resolution from Displayport converter on third of three screens

    I am currently using three screens at the same time with my ATI 5770 & an active Displayport converter. The thing is that the third screen (the one using the active Displayport converter) is showing terrible resolution compared to my other two screens. The third screen is a Samsung Syncmaster P23. Two of my screens have a max resolution of 1920x1080, meanwhile the third on is only capable of 1600x1200. Do any of you know a solution to this problem?

  • Songbird too damn slow, at least on my mac

    I've read on few places that Songbird is no good with more than some thousands of library items because it starts getting quite slow. Well, in my case (which is a clean install) I've imported 17k items (which I know is not that much) and instead of becoming just too slow it frequently gets to not responding for several minutes until getting back to its senses again. That's for whichever random operation such as deleting 1 item from library. I've also read on few more places that gives very little hope on fixing this issue, but I wonder... Is there any way to tweak it and make it work as fast as expected? Am I missing something or is this just a complete and utterly useless piece of software for libraries with more than 10 thousand thingies?

    I have three 23" monitors attached to 2 cards: Geforce GT 220 (1gb) Geforce 8400 GS (512mb) My System is quad core (Q8300 @ 2.50Ghz) 6GB Ram 64-bit windows 7 professional I have 2 monitors connected to the GT 220 and they work perfectly. I have 1 monitor (was hoping to attach another one) to the 8400 The monitor atatched to the 8400 is quite slow and jerky. What can i do to improve the performance? I disabled aero theme, didn't make much difference (if any)

  • jQuery Validate - require at least one field in a group to be filled

    I'm using the excellent jQuery Validate Plugin to validate some forms. On one form, I need to ensure that the user fills in at least one of a group of fields. I think I've got a pretty good solution, and wanted to share it. Please suggest any improvements you can think of. Finding no built-in way to do this, I searched and found Rebecca Murphey's custom validation method, which was very helpful. I improved this in three ways: To let you pass in a selector for the group of fields To let you specify how many of that group must be filled for validation to pass To show all inputs in the group as passing validation as soon as one of them passes validation. So you can say "at least X inputs that match selector Y must be filled." The end result is a rule like this: partnumber: { require_from_group: [2,".productinfo"] } //The partnumber input will validate if //at least 2 `.productinfo` inputs are filled For best results, put this rule AFTER any formatting rules for that field (like "must contain only numbers", etc). This way, if the user gets an error from this rule and starts filling out one of the fields, they will get immediate feedback about the formatting required without having to fill another field first. Item #3 assumes that you're adding a class of .checked to your error messages upon successful validation. You can do this as follows, as demonstrated here. success: function(label) { label.html(" ").addClass("checked"); } As in the demo linked above, I use CSS to give each span.error an X image as its background, unless it has the class .checked, in which case it gets a check mark image.   • SSIS - Access Denied with UNC paths - The file name is a device or contains invalid characters

    I spent another day tearing my hair out yesterday trying to resolve an issue with SSIS packages runnning in SQLAgent (not got much left at the moment, maybe I should contact the SSIS team for a wig). My situation was that I am deploying packages to a development server, and to provide isolation I was running jobs with a proxy account that only had access to the development servers. Proxies are an awesome feature and mean that you should never have to "just run the job as sysadmin". The issue I was facing was that the job step was failing. The job step was a simple execution of the package.The following errors appeared in my log file. I always check the "Log step output in history" for a job step, this ensures you get all the output from the command that you run. I'll blog about this later. If looking at the output in sysdtslog90 then you will have an entry with datacode -1073573533 and error message File or directory "<filename>" represented by connection "<connection>" does not exist.  Not exactly helpful. If you get the output from the console then you will also get these errors. 0xC0202070 "The file name property is not valid. The file name is a device or contains invalid characters." 0xC001401E "specified in the connection was not valid." It appears this error is due to the use of a UNC path and the account runnnig the package not having access to all the folders in the path. Solution To solve this you need to ensure that the proxy account has access to ALL folders in the path you are accessing. To check this works, logon as the relevant proxy user, or run a command window as the specified user. Then try and do net use \\server\share and then do a dir for each folder in the path and check you have access. If these work and you still have the problem then you have some other problem, sorry.   • Model M Keyboard inputs incorrect characters after logging in to Fedora

    I recently bought a 24 year old IBM Model M keyboard. From what I gather, it'd been left on a shelf for the last 5 years, so you can imagine the amount of dust dirt and crap that was on it. Before cleaning it, I plugged it in to my laptop (running Fedora 17) using a PS/2 to USB adapter. What I found was, while it still works, the keys I press don't correspond to what is displayed on the screen. So for example, when I type S on the keyboard, I get ß display on the screen instead. At the time, I put this down to the adapter not working properly. Since then, I stripped the keys off the keyboard and cleaned the whole thing. It looks like it's just come out of a box! I then plugged it in to my computer (also running Fedora 17) via a standard PS/2 plug. The computer loaded up to the login screen, and I typed in my password. Pressed enter, and I logged straight in to my machine. At this point, I opened up a text editor and started typing some stuff. To my horror, the keystrokes I was entering weren't coming up as intended. What came up instead were characters that would map to the pressed key but only under a different keyboard language setting. I opened up a program to see what keyboard language had been selected, and the correct one for the keyboard was selected (which is UK in my case). I opened up a window that would show what characters mapped to what keys, and I pressed every single key on the keyboard, and every corresponding block representing each key lit up. I went back to the text editor to try again, but I was still getting these random characters. Whats more is that the backspace key would not work, although in the other utility it would flash when pressed. What I know is that at the login screen the keyboard must have entered the correct characters, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to log in. Further more, keys that don't respond while using a text editor as sending signals to the computer, as illustrated in that keyboard utility. The question is why random characters are displayed when they really shouldn't be? Would this be a hardware fault or a software issue?

    I'm collecting text through a web form and noticing that when it is collected by my Perl CGI all instances of "+" are transformed into " ". I run the text through a JavaScript escape before submission, but escape seems to leave + unaltered. There must be something really obvious that I'm missing... how do I send the string "2 + 2 = 4" through and not have it arrive as "2 2 = 4"?

    I am trying to create a program that asks the User to type three words and sort them in lexicographic order. EXAMPLE; Enter three words separated by spaces: Pear Orange Apple Apple Orange Pear The program is working fine (if I attempt the above example) except for one type of combination example that I will show below. EXAMPLE; Enter three words separated by spaces: Orange Apple Pear Apple Pear Pear The program is skipping the first word (Orange) if it is supposed to appear in the middle of the three words.   • How to add extensions to a lot of files using content of each file?

    I've got over 10,000 files that don't have extensions from older versions of the Mac OS. They're extremely nested, and they also have all sorts of strange formatting and characters. They don't have file types or creator codes attached to them any longer. A great deal of these files have text in the file that will let me determine extensions (for example Word.Document.8 is in every file created by that version of Word, and Excel.Sheet.8 in every file created with that version of Excel). I found a script that looks like it would work for one of these file types at a time, but it erases parts of filenames after nefarious characters, which is not good. find . -type f -not -name "." -print0 |\ xargs -0 file |\ grep 'Word.Document.8' |\ sed 's/:.*//' |\ xargs -I % echo mv % %.doc So, two questions from that: One is, should I clean the characters in the filenames first, or programmatically deal with those in the script in order to leave them the same? As long as I lose no information from the filenames, I don't see a problem cleaning out slashes and other problem characters. Also, if I clean the filenames, there are likely to be duplicates, so any cleaning script would have to add something like "-1" before the extension to make sure nothing gets lost. 2nd question is how do I change the script so that it will look for more than one file type at the same time and give each the proper extension? I'm not tied to this script, but it is understandable, which is a pro. Mac OS X 10.6 is installed on this file server, but I've got access to any recent versions of OS X. Thanks, Ian

  • Cron Tips for not running cron jobs on holidays (the monday of a three day weekend)

    We have about a one hundred machine set-up with each machine running cron jobs like starting and stopping services and archiving these services' log files at the end of the day to a centralized repository. One headache we have is the three-day weekend (we're closed on holidays). We don't want the services starting up on those days and connecting to our business partner's machines. We currently do this by manually commenting out the most critical jobs and letting a bunch of errors happen all day. Not ideal. Basically if a job has '1-5' set in the day field we want this to mean 'work days' and not Monday to Friday'. We have a database that keeps track of which days are indeed 'work days' So, is it possible to override Cron's day-matching algorithm, or is there some other way to easily set a cron setting to avoid things starting up on a Monday holiday?     As everyone probably knows, Windows allows a drive to have four primary partitions, one of which may be active. However, I have only three primary partitions. I shrunk one and created a fourth partition so I could install Windows 8 on it, but Disk Management only allows it to be a logical partition. Why might this be the case? If I cannot convert it to a primary partition, is it advisable to install Windows on a logical partition? If so, is hibernation supported?

  • Xorg and three button mouse: emulate more than scroll alone

    I'm happy with my three-button mouse. But it could have more functions. When I press the middle button (button 2) and move the mouse, I can scroll up/down and left/right. xev shows me that when I drag the mouse with button 2 pressed it actually emulates button 4 (scroll up), 5 (down), 6 (left) and 7 (right). But can we take this further? For example, I would like to emulate button 8 if I press button 1 and 2 together, and button 9 if i press button 2 and 3. This would allow me to have the 'back' and 'forward' functionality in my browser. It would also be nice to get more functionality by pressing, for example, shift+mouse1, alt+mouse2. You could have a whole new set of emulated keys. Can this be done and if yes, then how?

  • an issue with VMWare Workstation 10 and three monitors

    I'm having a bit of a problem with using three monitors with VMWare Workstation 10. When only two monitors are enabled in the system I have an option to "Cycle Multiple Monitors", available from the View menu (in full screen). When I enable the third monitor that option is no longer in the menu and I can only use one monitor at a time. I've found this article and a "Choose a Monitor Layout" button is mentioned there but I'm unable to see it anywhere. I'm using Windows 8.1 as the host and Ubuntu 14.04 as the guest. The graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 290x with latest beta drivers

  • Is there a way to expose ports when the three default firewalls were disabled

    I think I disabled the three firewalls that come with FreeBSD (just for experimentation purposes). I checked the modules that load with the kernel (using "kldstat"). The only modules that load are: kernel -- ng_socket.ko, netgraph.ko, ng_mppc.ko and rc4.ko). I'd like to know what module is still blocking my ports now. After removing all firewall options from the rc.file and re-compiling the kernel without the pf option (or any firewall for that matter), I can't still open ports freely. How does it work exactly? Thanks.

  • Three disk (possibly RAID) data recovery

    I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?
