  • Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

    I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).

    I had recently formatted my system only to find out i have lost the cd key to my original cd. i had used the option to enter the product key later. Yes, i know its a stupid thing to do but i bought the cd in 2008 from a retail store and i lost the original packaging. the actual label on the cd is includes service pack version 2002 .@2004 microsoft corporation reserved. There are some numbers on the back side of the cd in the inner ring. i cant for the life of me figure out how what is the use of the genuine cd i have with me when i cant seem to activate it. what exactly is the advantage of having the original cd in your possession in situations like this?. i have tried the unattend.txt and it doesnt contain the correct key. and there does not exist any winnnt.sif file in the cd. where on the cd or in it can i find the product id information i stay in india . and my attempts at trying the microsoft support site keeps getting me directed to page which says they had stopped support for windows xp in 2011. lets say by some miracle i do contact microsoft. what information would i have to provide them? and would they be giving me the product key for my cd key from their database? or a new key?

  • Lost the config of my monitor once I connected it to a KVM switch.

    I used to have a monitor (Acer 20", AL2017) connected to the external video port of my laptop. Everything was great and I could get a rather high resolution available when setting it under Ubuntu (all versions). But since I connected it to a KVM, the monitor is no more recognized, and I cannot go beyond 1024x768. My video adapter is an Intel chipset 9xx from an older Pentium Core 2 Duo laptop. The same monitor, using another video chipset (Intel 82G33/G31 rev 02) is properly detected through the switch box. Looks to me like the video chipset is not the best, and I can live with this. I see that I have no xorg.conf, and I understand that I would need to generate one so I can then use it to force the available modes on the X system. How can I generate the xorg.conf file for my Intel video chip, so I can use it then ? Merci :-)

  • How can I detect and delete all lost configuration folders?

    Over the time there is an increasing number of hidden .configuration folders in my home folder. Many of these come from applications I only installed for testing or from applications that I don't use any more. I would not mind really but these folders do clutter my home, and worse than that sum up to as much as 80 GBytes by now. As there are also applications I never heard of (at least I can't remember I had installed them) I hesitate to delete them. Is there a way to find out which folders came from purged applications? May there even be a way to auto-remove a configuration folder when purging (not removing) the application that created it?

  • Accidentally hit shortcut and lost text in web browser. Can it be disabled?

    I have noticed that I occasionally hit some shortcut while typing that either kills the browser or otherwise causes me to lose e.g. a post I am writing. This typically happens if I type while on a bumpy road or something like that. It also just happened to my eight year old daughter ;-( I think the shortcut in question is CTRL-w which (at least in Firefox) closes the current tab and consequently whatever content is being written. I would like to know if anyone has noticed this and if someone has a solution e.g. a way to disable "dangerous" shortcuts if at all possible. Many thanks Ole (uniomni)

  • WIN7 and Ubuntu lost after Installing ubuntu 12.04 and win7 dual system ,I have no OS on my laptop now

    Here is the procedure: In the morning I installed ubuntu using a USB directly without config any thing to my win7 system. After install complete, ubuntu installation software tell me to reboot.And everything is just find. While rebooting, there is NO UBUNTU system for me to select,and my laptop go straight to log in using WIN7. NO ubuntu shows on WIN7's configuration(Default System). Log in ubuntu using usb(try ubuntu without installation), I can find ubuntu's filesystem was already there. Formatting the disk on WIN7's disk management, rearranging them to other disk.Still having no trouble with WIN7. In the afternoon try a few times of installation and uninstallation of ubuntu. still shows no sign of selecting ubuntu system. In the evening another trial while installing ubuntu with the third option of: installing ubuntu alongside with INW7, erase win7 and install ubuntu. somethingelse --- my check failed with configuartion for what comes out with the 'something else' option,reboot. And I have no system now with some cmd tips say: Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key. Files those on win7's orginal file system and Ubuntu filesystem can still be found when I 'try ubuntu without installation'. 5.But I just got no OS when I reboot my laptop normally.

    I previously had Heron 8.04 installed. Today I decided to upgrade. During the partition phase of the install of 10.10 it asked me what portion of the drive I should use. There were a few options: Drag the partition size to indicate what I wanted to use A button that said use entire partition A button that said use entire drive I selected use entire partition as the Windows partition did not appear on the screen I assumed this was just displaying the existing Ubuntu partition. After install I think I have wiped my entire Windows partition, I can't see it anywhere. I would appreciate some advice as to find if it really is gone forever (My stupidity I didn't back up my Windows partition which includes 3 years of baby photos).

I have seen significant reduction in traffic, impressions, and rankings. I did all the right steps/best practices: change of address in GWT, map old site hierarchy and match to new site for 301 redirects etc. Indexation has gone through the Google process: old site has all but dissappeared from he index and new site is indexed, albeit with some 404 errors which I am addressing. Does anyone else who has gone through eh domain change process have any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

    o.k, this is embarrassing: I have installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and tried to fix it so that the transition time between changing tabs (using alt+tab) will be short. by accident I un-pressed V from something else, and it asked me about a conflict - I pressed the "x" button to close the window and as a result I stopped seeing the unity interface. That is - I can not see any buttons of the left side.   • How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password?

    I'm working on a Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system using a Panasonic CF-50 Laptop. My Client has completely forgotten his Administrative Password. He doesn't even remember entering one; however it is there. I've tried the suggestions on the WebSite and I have been unsuccessful in deleting the password so that I can download applets required for running some files. Do you have a solution?     Why every change in Asus UX50v causes screen resolution get lost? Installing a new application, connecting to another wireless network, change some settings, ... causes this problem. For example after installing an application, UX50v needs to restart. And when it got restarted, resolution would be set to 640x480(or 600x800) and Hibernate and Sleep options are disappeared from shutdown menu! (I have other problems with this Asus UX50v crap too - like I can't update windows 7 because it crashes on Asus UX50v crap - but this one is absolutely ridiculous and stupid!)

  • Mac failing (failed?) hard drive - is all hope lost?

    It's a 500 GB Seagate laptop hard drive that came with my Macbook Pro. Apple partition format. Already replaced and now have it external, connected via SATA/USB adapter. Trying to get just a few files that I worked on while out of town when it crashed (and thus did not have my time machine backup drive). Drive will not mount, but OS X Disk Utility detects it and can read the capacity, model number, and even the name of the partition, which leads me to believe all hope may not be lost. Failed attempts so far: Disk Utility verify+repair says drive cannot be repaired and that I should back up immediately (lovely) Disk Warrior says it cannot rebuild the directory due to hardware failure Data Rescue quick & deep scans immediately failed PhotoRec says "error reading sector" for every sector (at least for the few minutes I let it run before closing it to explore other options) What else can I try here? Again, I'm just looking for a few, small files (python scripts to be specific) - not a full recovery.

    Very weird, i had opened notepad ++ and working on my CSS codes for my website, suddenly my little niece unplugged the computer, when i re-start the computer and opened again the same CSS codes file in notepad ++, so all i am seeing is "NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL" there is no codes, all lost. We removed primary key, replaced exiting data with new data resulted losing our critical business data in its child tables on MSSQL Server. When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled. 4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working.     Well, I just got a new PNY usb drive and it passed through an airport scanner yesterday. For some reason, I wrote to it and then tried to read from it today, and it gave me a corrupted error! chkdsk reports errors like: Bad links in lost chain at cluster 1179 corrected. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1200. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1228. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1236. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1237. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1244. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1250. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1266. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1278. Orphan truncated. etc. What is this from? Could it possibly be from the airport scanner, or is it likely a defective USB chip? How can I check the chip to see if I should just return/throw it away or continue to use it?

  • When I ping Internet addresses like yahoo or Google, I get 2 reply packets and 2 lost packets.

    I have Airtel broadband and a Tata broadband connection. i have around 50 PCs connecting through an airtel broadband connection. Both are dsl connections with my phone line going into dsl modems and an Ethernet cable going from dsl modem directly into a switch. Currently, only airtel connection is connected with static IP on my private lan and using the airtel ISP DNS servers as DNS IP address and the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (IP add. of the dsl modem). All PCs are connected in a work group. When in full use, my users complain of certain web pages are not opening. When I ping Internet addresses like Yahoo or Google I get 2 reply packets and 2 lost packets. I suspect that a single broadband connection is not able to sustain 50 simultaneous downloads/browsing. Is there any device which connect to both DSL and make one line so that its give me high speed simultaneous browsing. Help needed urgently. Thank you all to those who reply.

    A SVN repo I use git-svn to track was recently corrupted and a backup was recovered. However, a week's worth of commits were lost in the recovery. Is it possible to recover those lost commits using git-svn dcommit on my local git repo?
