  • Doing sum's if certain conditions are true

    I am trying to build a query that does a sum if a certain parameter is set. For example: SELECT SUM(IF(<condition>,field,field)) AS total_value ...which is working correctly. But i have more than one condition in IF(), like: SELECT SUM(IF(<condition> <condition>,field,field)) AS total_value ..which is not working, could you have any idea what should be the right query for this.

  • Is it correct to add booleans in order to count the number of true values in a vector?

    Is it conceptually correct to sum a vector of booleans? From a mathematical point of view, I would argue it's not: True + True != 2. But it's quite practical to do so still! Example using the vectorised Python library numpy: In [1]: X = rand(10) In [2]: large = X>0.6 In [3]: large.dtype Out[3]: dtype('bool') In [4]: large.sum() Out[4]: 7 I don't like it, but it's very practical. Is this a good practice? Update: the aim is to count the number of true values in a vector.

    I don't know if I'm alone but sometimes I have a function that should return true or false. But in some case there would be a third result that would make more sense. In some language theses cases would be handled with integers or with exception. For exemple you want to handle the age of a user if he is over 18 years old. And you have a function like this. if(user.isAdult(country_code)){ //Go On }else{ // Block access or do nothing } But in some case depending how your app is built I could see case where the birthday field is incomplete. Then this function should return something undetermined. switch(user.isAdult()){ case true: // go on break; case undetermined: //Inform user birthday is incomplete case false: //Block access } As i said we can handle that with Exceptions and Int, but I would find it quite sexy to have a true, false, undetermined embeded in the language instead of using some home defined constants.

  • How to get better at solving Dynamic programming problems

    I recently came across this question: "You are given a boolean expression consisting of a string of the symbols 'true', 'false', 'and', 'or', and 'xor'. Count the number of ways to parenthesize the expression such that it will evaluate to true. For example, there is only 1 way to parenthesize 'true and false xor true' such that it evaluates to true." I knew it is a dynamic programming problem so i tried to come up with a solution on my own which is as follows. Suppose we have a expression as A.B.C.....D where '.' represents any of the operations and, or, xor and the capital letters represent true or false. Lets say the number of ways for this expression of size K to produce a true is N. when a new boolean value E is added to this expression there are 2 ways to parenthesize this new expression 1. ((A.B.C.....D).E) ie. with all possible parenthesizations of A.B.C.....D we add E at the end. 2. (A.B.C.(D.E)) ie. evaluate D.E first and then find the number of ways this expression of size K can produce true. suppose T[K] is the number of ways the expression with size K produces true then T[k]=val1+val2+val3 where val1,val2,val3 are calculated as follows. 1)when E is grouped with D. i)It does not change the value of D ii)it inverses the value of D in the first case val1=T[K]=N.( As this reduces to the initial A.B.C....D expression ). In the second case re-evaluate dp[K] with value of D reversed and that is val1. 2)when E is grouped with the whole expression. //val2 contains the number of 'true' E will produce with expressions which gave 'true' among all parenthesized instances of A.B.C.......D i) if true.E = true then val2 = N ii) if true.E = false then val2 = 0 //val3 contains the number of 'true' E will produce with expressions which gave 'false' among all parenthesized instances of A.B.C.......D iii) if false.E=true then val3=( 2^(K-2) - N ) = M ie. number of ways the expression with size K produces a false [ 2^(K-2) is the number of ways to parenthesize an expression of size K ]. iv) if false.E=false then val3 = 0 This is the basic idea i had in mind but when i checked for its solution http://people.csail.mit.edu/bdean/6.046/dp/dp_9.swf the approach there was completely different. Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong and how can i get better at solving DP so that I can come up with solutions like the one given above myself. Thanks in advance.

However, I would like to have the details for each pair comparison, like if diamonds of colors D and E have the same mean price, as some other softwares do (SPSS) when you ask for a Kruskal test.   • A Django form for entering a 0 to n email addresses

    I have a Django application with some fairly common models in it: UserProfile and Organization. A UserProfile or an Organization can both have 0 to n emails, so I have an Email model that has a GenericForeignKey. UserProfile and Organization Models both have a GenericRelation called emails that points back to the Email model (summary code provided below). The question: what is the best way to provide an Organization form that allows a user to enter organization details including 0 to n email addresses? My Organization create view is a Django class-based view. I'm leading towards creating a dynamic form and an enabling it with Javascript to allow the user to add as many email addresses as necessary. I will render the form with django-crispy-forms. I've thought about doing this with a formset embedded within the form, but this seems like overkill for email addresses. Embedding a formset in a form delivered by a class-based view is cumbersome too.   • Using excel, how can I count the number of cells in a column containing the text "true" or "false"?

    I have a spreadsheet that has a column of cells where each cell contains a single word. I would like to count the occurrences of some words. I can use the COUNTIF function for most words, but if the word is "true" or "false", I get 0. A B 1 apples 2 2 true 0 3 false 0 4 oranges 1 5 apples In the above spreadsheet table, I have these formulas in cells B1, B2, B3 and B4: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"apples") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"true") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"false") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"oranges) As you can see, I can count apples, but not true or false. I have also tried this: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,TRUE) But that does not work either. Note -- I am using Excel 2007.

  • How to do server-side validation using Jqgrid?

    Hi, I'm using jqgrid to display a list of sites and I want to do some server side validation when a site is added or edited. (Form editing rather than inline. Validation needs to be server side for various reasons I won't go into.) I thought the best way would be to check the data via an ajax request when the beforeSubmit event is triggered. However this only seems to work when I'm editing an existing row in the grid - the function isn't called when I add a new row. Have I got my beforeSubmit in the wrong place?   • If I have true i/o false or vice versa, is it an OBOE?

    I often make the mistake of inverting my truth values in my code (e.g. in my if clauses). It gives me the same feeling as when making an OBOE (Off By One Error), even though it's technically not. Would you call it an OBOE, or better yet, is there a specific term for "off by truth value"-errors? My reasoning is that all possible values of a boolean are true and false. In other words, the possible values are contained in the array: [true, false]. If you access this array by index, you'll always be off by one… when selecting the wrong one. This becomes especially obvious when you calculate your index as: index = someInt % 2. Now I understand that this usually not the case, but in my mind, it always feels like this. Almost got it, just off by one…

I have checked i do have the most recent version of flash installed correctly.     First off, my application currently defines anyDensity=false in the manifest file. Elsewhere in the app, I'm trying to capture and display a View's DrawingCache but I'm not able to get a clear Bitmap without scaling artifacts. The code below yields a Bitmap but it has scaling artifacts and is generally fuzzy. myView.setDrawingCacheEnabled(true); Bitmap myBitmap = Bitmap.Create(myView.getDrawingCache()); myImageView.setImageBitmap(myBitmap); As I read it, the documentation for getDrawingCache says this is to be expected and to use getDrawingCache(true). I have done these functions: 1) Sees if the lines in a list are even or not: parityLine :: [[Int]] -> [Bool] parityLine [] =[] parityLine (x:xs) |sum(x) `mod` 2 == 0 = True:(parityLine(xs)) |otherwise = False:(parityLine(xs)) 2) Sum the corresponding elements on a list of lists: sumPositions :: [[Int]] -> [Int] sumPositions [] = [] sumPositions (x:xs) = foldl (zipWith (+)) (repeat 0) (x:xs) 3) Sees if the columns in a list are even or not: parityColumn :: [Int] -> [Bool] parityColumn [] = [] parityColumn (x:xs) |head(x:xs) `mod` 2 == 0 = True:parityColumn(xs) |otherwise = False:parityColumn(xs) 4) Does the operation or with two boolean lists: bol :: [Bool] -> [Bool] -> [[Bool]] bol [] _ = [] bol (x:xs) (y:ys)= (map (||x) (y:ys)):(bol xs (y:ys)) 5) Correct List: correct :: [[Int]] -> [[Bool]] correct [] = [] correct (x:xs)=(bol(parityLine (x:xs))(parityColumn(sumPositions(x:xs)))) So what I want is to alter the function correct to [[Int]]-[[Int]] that does this: My Int list(x:xs) With my correct function applied [[0,0,1,1], [[True,True,False,True], [1,0,1,1], [True,True,True,True], [0,1,0,1], [True,True,True,True] [1,1,1,1]] [True,True,True,True]] Now I can see that in the first line third column, False, so I have to correct that number 1 to have a number of 1's even. Result I want that function correct does: [[0,0,0,1], [1,0,1,1], [0,1,0,1], [1,1,1,1]] Thanks.
