• Optimization ended up in casting an object at each method call

  I've been doing some optimization for the following piece of code : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color); } After profiling it about 70% of the time spent was in getting a context for drawing and disposing it. I ended up sketching the following overload : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color, BitmapContext bitmapContext) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color, bitmapContext); } Until here no problems, all the user has to do is to pass a context and performance is really great as a context is created/disposed one time only (previously it was a thousand times per second). The next step was to make it generic in the sense it doesn't depend on a particular framework for rendering (besides .NET obvisouly). So I wrote this method : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color, IDisposable bitmapContext) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color, (BitmapContext)bitmapContext); } Now every time a line is drawn the generic context is casted, this was unexpected for me. Are there any approaches for fixing this design issue ?   ASP.NET offers very easy way to serialize objects to JSON format. Also it is easy to deserialize JSON objects using same library. In this posting I will show you how to serialize and deserialize JSON objects in ASP.NET. All required classes are located in System.Servicemodel.Web assembly. There is namespace called System.Runtime.Serialization.Json for JSON serializer. To serialize object to stream we can use the following code. var serializer = new DataContractJsonSerializer(typeof(MyClass)); serializer.WriteObject(myStream, myObject); To deserialize object from stream we can use the following code. CopyStream() is practically same as my Stream.CopyTo() extension method. var serializer = new DataContractJsonSerializer(typeof(MyClass));   using(var stream = response.GetResponseStream()) using (var ms = new MemoryStream()) {     CopyStream(stream, ms);     results = serializer.ReadObject(ms) as MyClass; } Why I copied data from response stream to memory stream? Point is simple – serializer uses some stream features that are not supported by response stream. Using memory stream we can deserialize object that came from web.

  I have been having problems wrapping my brain around how to properly utilize the modular extension for Codeigniter. From what I understand, modules should be entirely independent of one another so I can work on one module and not have to worry about what module my teammate is working on. I am building a frontend and a backend to my site, and am having confusion about how I should structure my applications. The first part of my question is should I use the app root controllers to run modules, or should users go directly to the modules by urls? IE: in my welcome.php public function index() { $this->data['blog'] = Modules::run( 'blog' ); $this->data['main'] = Modules::run( 'random_image' ); $this->load->view('v_template', $this->data); } public function calendar() { $this->data['blog'] = Modules::run( 'blog' ); $this->data['main'] = Modules::run( 'calendar' ); $this->load->view('v_template', $this->data); } My second part of the question is should I create separate front/back end module folders -config -controllers welcome.php -admin admin.php -core -helpers -hooks -language -libraries -models -modules-back -dashboard -logged_in -login -register -upload_images -delete_images -modules-front -blog -calendar -random_image -search -views v_template.php -admin av_template.php Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Chrome "refusing to execute script"

  In the head of my HTML page, I have: <script src="https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less.js/master/dist/less-1.3.3.js"></script> When I load the page in my browser (Google Chrome v 27.0.1453.116) and enable the developer tools, it says Refused to execute script from 'https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less.js/master/dist/less-1.3.3.js' because its MIME type ('text/plain') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled. Indeed, the script won't run. Why does Chrome think this is a plaintext file? It clearly has a js file extension. Since I'm using HTML5, I omitted the type attribute, so I thought that might be causing the problem. So I added type="text/javascript" to the <script> tag, and got the same result. I even tried type="application/javascript" and still, same error. Then I tried changing it to type="text/plain" just out of curiosity. The browser did not return an error, but of course the JavaScript did not run. Finally I thought the periods in the filename might be throwing the browser off. So in my HTML, I changed all the periods to the URL escape character %2E: <script src="https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less%2Ejs/master/dist/less-1%2E3%2E3.js"></script> This still did not work. The only thing that truly works (i.e. the browser does not give an error and the JS successfully runs) is if I download the file, upload it to a local directory, and then change the src value to the local file. I'd rather not do this since I'm trying to save space on my own website. How do I get the Chrome to recognize that the linked file is actually a javascript type?

The session was well attended and we had lively discussions with the attendees during Q & A.   When Netcat integrated into OpenSolaris it was already clear that there will be couple of enhancements needed. The biggest set of the changes made after Solaris 11 Express was released brings various I/O enhancements to netcat shipped with Solaris 11. Also, since Solaris 11, the netcat package is installed by default in all distribution forms (live CD, text install, ...). Now, let's take a look at the new functionality: /usr/bin/netcat alternative program name (symlink) -b bufsize I/O buffer size -E use exclusive bind for the listening socket -e program program to execute -F no network close upon EOF on stdin -i timeout extension of timeout specification -L timeout linger on close timeout -l -p port addr previously not allowed usage -m byte_count Quit after receiving byte_count bytes -N file pattern for UDP scanning -I bufsize size of input socket buffer -O bufsize size of output socket buffer -R redir_spec port redirection addr/port[/{tcp,udp}] syntax of redir_spec -Z bypass zone boundaries -q timeout timeout after EOF on stdin Obviously, the Swiss army knife of networking tools just got a bit thicker. While by themselves the options are pretty self explanatory, their combination together with other options, context of use or boundary values of option arguments make it possible to construct small but powerful tools. For example: the port redirector allows to convert TCP stream to UDP datagrams. the buffer size specification makes it possible to send one byte TCP segments or to produce IP fragments easily. the socket linger option can be used to produce TCP RST segments by setting the timeout to 0 execute option makes it possible to simulate TCP/UDP servers or clients with shell/python/Perl/whatever script etc. If you find some other helpful ways use please share via comments. • Be liberal in what you accept... or not?

  [Disclaimer: this question is subjective, but I would prefer getting answers backed by facts and/or reflexions] I think everyone knows about the Robustness Principle, usually summed up by Postel's Law: Be conservative in what you send; be liberal in what you accept. I would agree that for the design of a widespread communication protocol this may make sense (with the goal of allowing easy extension), however I have always thought that its application to HTML / CSS was a total failure, each browser implementing its own silent tweak detection / behavior, making it near impossible to obtain a consistent rendering across multiple browsers. I do notice though that there the RFC of the TCP protocol deems "Silent Failure" acceptable unless otherwise specified... which is an interesting behavior, to say the least. There are other examples of the application of this principle throughout the software trade that regularly pop up because they have bitten developpers, from the top off my head: Javascript semi-colon insertion C (silent) builtin conversions (which would not be so bad if it did not truncated...) and there are tools to help implement "smart" behavior: name matching phonetic algorithms (Double Metaphone) string distances algorithms (Levenshtein distance) However I find that this approach, while it may be helpful when dealing with non-technical users or to help users in the process of error recovery, has some drawbacks when applied to the design of library/classes interface: it is somewhat subjective whether the algorithm guesses "right", and thus it may go against the Principle of Least Astonishment it makes the implementation more difficult, thus more chances to introduce bugs (violation of YAGNI ?) it makes the behavior more susceptible to change, as any modification of the "guess" routine may break old programs, nearly excluding refactoring possibilities... from the start! And this is what led me to the following question: When designing an interface (library, class, message), do you lean toward the robustness principle or not ? I myself tend to be quite strict, using extensive input validation on my interfaces, and I was wondering if I was perhaps too strict.

• Tweaking log4net Settings Programmatically

  A few months ago, I had to dynamically add a log4net appender at runtime.  Now I find myself in another log4net situation.  I need to modify the configuration of my appenders at runtime. My client requires all files generated by our applications to be saved to a specific location.  This location is determined at runtime.  Therefore, I want my FileAppenders to log their data to this specific location – but I won't know the location until runtime so I can't add it to the XML configuration file I'm using. No problem.  Bing is my new friend and returned a couple of hits.  I made a few tweaks to their LINQ queries and created a generic extension method for ILoggerRepository (just a hunch that I might want this functionality somewhere else in the future – sorry YAGNI fans): public static void ModifyAppenders<T>(this ILoggerRepository repository, Action<T> modify) where T:log4net.Appender.AppenderSkeleton { var appenders = from appender in log4net.LogManager.GetRepository().GetAppenders() where appender is T select appender as T;   foreach (var appender in appenders) { modify(appender); appender.ActivateOptions(); } } Now I can easily add the proper directory prefix to all of my FileAppenders at runtime: log4net.LogManager.GetRepository().ModifyAppenders<FileAppender>(a => { a.File = Path.Combine(settings.ConfigDirectory, Path.GetFileName(a.File)); }); Thanks beefycode and Wil Peck. • Installing both lxml 3.1.2 and lxml2 on ubuntu 12.04

So here it is again, reformulated. On the lxml site they suggest that it is possible to have both lxml2 and the newest version of lxml on ubuntu: Using lxml with python-libxml2 If you want to use lxml together with the official libxml2 Python bindings (maybe because one of your dependencies uses it), you must build lxml statically. Otherwise, the two packages will interfere in places where the libxml2 library requires global configuration, which can have any kind of effect from disappearing functionality to crashes in either of the two. To get a static build, either pass the --static-deps option to the setup.py script, or run pip with the STATIC_DEPS or STATICBUILD environment variable set to true, i.e. STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml The STATICBUILD environment variable is handled equivalently to the STATIC_DEPS variable, but is used by some other extension packages, too. I am generally confused about how pip packages and ubuntu packages get along, so I hesitate to run STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml. Will it damage/confuse my installed lxml2 package? The suggestion on SO was to install the new lxml in a virtualenv. That looks like the best way to go, but the lxml site is suggesting that a dual installation will work also. In general: what happens if I use pip (to get a newer install) for a package that is already installed by apt-get?

• JPEG images not loading on PlayBook (Marmalade + iwgame)

  I'm using iwgame on a test project and I was trying to render different resolutions of JPG and PNG images. Everything works fine on the Marmalade Simulator, however once I deploy the game to our PlayBook and run it, only the PNG images are shown. I have declared the images in the MKB file and on a XML file iwgame's using to load the images. I've checked the deployments folder and all images are present in the intermediatefiles/native folder. We're currently using a BlackBerry only license, so we can only test this on the PlayBook, but we do intend to get a Community license and deploy to iOS and Android devices eventually (I'm not sure if this is a problem exclusive to the PlayBook). I really don't know if this is a Marmalade or a iwgame issue. I have a different test project without iwgame and it simply won't run with jpg images (I get the error: 'Could not find handler for extension "jpg"'). While searching for a sollution, I've seen people talking about using libjpg, but I've also found that Marmalade supposedly has integrated native jpeg support (and because of that iwgame has abandoned their jpeg loading support since v0.340), so I don't know what to think. I'm currently using the most recent versions of both Marmalade and iwgame, I believe: Marmalade 6.1.2 and iwgame 0.400. Also, please let me know if there's an easier or better way to do this, such as linking libjpg or something (I'm not exactly sure how to do this). I really would appreciate some help with this, there's a huge difference in size for the images we're planning to use, from a ~500kb jpg file to a ~3.5mb png file. Thanks, guys.

• How to make Unity 3D work with Bumblebee using the Intel chipset

  I have a Sony VAIO S laptop with the dreaded Optimus and finally managed to get Bumblebee to work fully on Ubuntu 12.04 so that I can utilize both the hardware acceleration of the Intel chipset as well as the Nvidia one via optirun and/or bumble-app-settings. However, the desktop effects don't work. But they should, I vaguely remember that they worked for a while before I had Bumblebee installed. This is what I get with the support test: :~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 8.0.2) Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: no GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no First of all, I kind of doubt that the chipset doesn't support VBOs (essentially a standard feature in GL). Neither Xorg.0.log nor Xorg.8.log show any particular errors. As for the Nvidia drivers: In order to get them to work, I had to install the 304.22 drivers (older ones wouldn't work). They clobbered libglx.so, so I reinstated the xserver-xorg-core libglx.so in its original place, moved Nvidia's libglx.so to an nvidia-specific folder and specified that folder in the bumblebee.config. That seems to work and shouldn't cause the problem I see here. • Executing NUnit Tests using the Visual Studio 2012 Test Runner

  At a recent Visual Studio 2012 event at the Calgary .NET User Group, I was told that I could run my NUnit tests directly in the Visual Studio 2012 without any special plugins.  Naturally, I was very excited and I immediately tried running my NUnit tests. I was somewhat disappointed to see that the Test Runner did not discover any of my NUnit tests.  Apparently, you do still need to install an extension that supports NUnit.  Microsoft has completely re-written the Test Runner in Visual Studio 2012 and opened it up for anyone to write Test Adapters for any unit test framework (not just MSTest).  Once the correct test adapters are installed, everything works great.  Luckily, there are a good number of adapters already written. Here are some Test Adapters that you might find useful: NUnit Test Adapter – This one is still in beta, but tit does work with the official Visual Studio 2012 release xUnit.net Test Adapter Silverlight Unit Test Adapter Chutzpah Test Adapter Overall, I still prefer the unit test runner in ReSharper, but this is a great new feature for those who might not have a ReSharper license.

• AsyncBridge? Async on .NET 4.0 using VS11

  I've just found something quite cool. It's a code snippet that lets you use the real VS 11 C#5 compiler to write code that uses the async and await keywords, but to target .NET 4.0. It was published by Daniel Grunwald (from SharpDevelop).That means I can stop using the Async CTP for VS2010, which is not at all supported anymore, and a pain to install if you have windows updates turned on. Obviously I couldn't ask all my users to install .NET 4.5 beta, but .NET Demon is a VS 2010 extension, so we already have .NET 4.0. At the time of writing, VS11 is in beta still, but hopefully it's stable enough for my team to use!I would have written the code myself, but I had the wrong impression that the C# 5 beta compiler only looked in mscorlib for the helper classes it needs to implement async methods. Turns out you can provide them yourself. You can get the code here: https://gist.github.com/1961087You just add it to your project, and the compiler will apparently pick it up and use it to implement async/await. I'm at my parents' place for Easter without access to a machine with VS 11 to try it out. Let me know whether you get it to work!This reminds me of LINQBridge, which let us use C# 3 LINQ, but only require .NET 2. We should stick up a webpage to explain, with a nice easy dll, put it in nuget, and call it AsyncBridge.If you were really enthusiastic, you could re-implement the skeleton of the Task Parallel Library against .NET 2 to use async/await without even requiring .NET 4. Our usage stats suggest that practically everyone that uses Red Gate tools already has .NET 4 installed though, so I don't think I'll go to the effort.
