• Using VCL for the web (intraweb) as a trick for adding web interface to a legacy non-tiered (2 tiers

  My team is maintaining a huge Client Server win32 Delphi application. It is a client/server application (Thick client) that uses DevArt (SDAC) components to connect to SQL Server. The business logic is often "trapped" in Component's event handlers, anyway with some degree of refactoring it is doable to move the business logic in common units (a big part of this work has already been done during refactoring... Maintaing legacy applications someone else wrote is very frustrating, but this is a very common job). Now there is the request of a web interface, I have several options of course, in this question i want to focus on the VCL for the web (intraweb) option. The idea is to use the common code (the same pas files) for both the client/server application and the web application. I heard of many people that moved legacy apps from delphi to intraweb, but here I am trying to keep the Thick client too. The idea is to use common code, may be with some compiler directives to write specific code: {$IFDEF CLIENTSERVER} {here goes the thick client specific code} {$ELSE} {here goes the Intraweb specific code} {$ENDIF} Then another problem is the "migration plan", let's say I have 300 features and on the first release I will have only 50 of them available in the web application. How to keep track of it? I was thinking of (ab)using Delphi interfaces to handle this. For example for the User Authentication I could move all the related code in a procedure and declare an interface like: type IUserAuthentication= interface['{0D57624C-CDDE-458B-A36C-436AE465B477}'] procedure UserAuthentication; end; In this way as I implement the IUserAuthentication interface in both the applications (Thick Client and Intraweb) I know that That feature has been "ported" to the web. Anyway I don't know if this approach makes sense. I made a prototype to simulate the whole process. It works for a "Hello world" application, but I wonder if it makes sense on a large application or this Interface idea is only counter-productive and can backfire. My question is: does this approach make sense? (the Interface idea is just an extra idea, it is not so important as the common code part described above) Is it a viable option? I understand it depends a lot of the kind of application, anyway to be generic my one is in the CRM/Accounting domain, and the number of concurrent users on a single installation is typically less than 20 with peaks of 50. EXTRA COMMENT (UPDATE): I ask this question because since I don't have a n-tier application I see Intraweb as the unique option for having a web application that has common code with the thick client. Developing webservices from the Delphi code makes no sense in my specific case, so the alternative I have is to write the web interface using ASP.NET (duplicating the business logic), but in this case I cannot take advantage of the common code in an easy way. Yes I could use dlls maybe, but my code is not suitable for that.

  I can enable a Local Area Network interface for my machine with the command netsh interface set interface "Local Area Connection" ENABLED Is there an equivalent command to connect a bluetooth network connection? I've tried netsh interface set interface "Bluetooth" ENABLED but it seems to have no effect, the connection remains disconnected. I also tried netsh interface set interface "Bluetooth" connect=CONNECTED but this returns One or more essential parameters not specified I know this Bluetooth connection is otherwise ok since I am able to connect using Control Panel Network Connections, right-clicking on Bluetooth Connect.

• Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

  I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

• How to upload binary (audio) data from a Flash AS3 client to .NET server (WCF/REST/HTTP/?)?

  Simply stated: I'm trying to record audio in a browser, and get that data back up to the server. I originally tried to capture, encode and upload the audio using Silverlight, but because of the lack of suitable client-side encoding options, I'm now giving Flash a shot (Flash has baked-in support for encoding to Speex). I think I've figured out how to capture and encode the audio... But now what was easy in Silverlight, is the challenge in Flash. My server-side is .NET: MVC2- I'm open to receiving the audio in whatever manner is best- REST, WCF.. So that's my question: How could one upload binary data from Flash, to a .NET server-side endpoint. If the answer is WCF: then how would one setup the client-side proxies to communicate with the service? If the answer is REST or HTTP Post, then how would one construct this HTTP request and pass along the data? I've been reading up on AS3, but am new to Flash dev... Thanks for any help!

• Ubuntu stopped recognizing my iPod

  Rythmbox on Ubuntu 10.10 used to recognize my 3rd gen Nano and transfer mp3s. Now I plug it in and Ubuntu doesn't pop-up that box that asks what you want to do anymore. • alsa - sound issues on ubuntu 12.04

• Cannot access SMC8014WG-SI provided by TimeWarner/RoadRunner administrative interface...

  I just received installation of RoadRunner internet/TV/Voice and I was given a wi-fi router from the TimeWarner folks. The model is a SMC SMC8014WG-SI. Unfortunately, the password it uses is WEP and that is, as we all know, completely insecure. The tech that was here didn't know how to change it to something like WPA2 w/TKIP, and I was on hold for 20 minutes with the TimeWarner folks before I gave up. My problem is that the default web interface (http://192.168.0.1) isn't responding. I can ping it, I can access the internet through it, but I can't get to the admin interface. I did a "hard reset" of the device but still no dice. My suspicion is that the wi-fi admin interface is disabled (a common setting) but the wired interface isn't working on either of my two laptops (I've tried two laptops with two different cables, no link light activated). Am I SOL? Did they lock this down so I can't do what I want to do? Worst-case is I just hook up my go-to WRT54G router to the other modem and leave this one turned off, but I'd rather use their hardware to avoid any "It's not our problem" in the future. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

  On my previous notebook, the Dell/Broadcom wireless adapter had an option to automatically disable wireless when a wired network is connected, so I never dealt with multiple active interfaces. My current system has an Intel wireless adapter, and they apparently haven't figured out how to turn it off when there is a wired connection. Unless I explicitly remember to disable wireless when docked, the connection is active. That shouldn't be a problem (in theory), since the route metric will cause traffic to go over the fastest network (as indicated by the lowest metric in the routing table). Apparently not - I'm running a backup and seeing the throughput at 25Mbps or so (which is consistent with 802.11g) when a perfectly good Gigabit Ethernet interface is also connected.   I am setting up a Debian Squeeze box as a KVM host. I want to add multiple interfaces to each KVM guest so I want them to be on different VLANs. After reading about this, I believe the best method is to add multiple logical VLAN (sub)-interfaces to the physical NICs and then create a bridge adapter for each VLAN interace, and assign each bridge as a NIC for KVM guests. Does this make good sense, or madness? Do I have to use bridged interfaces with KVM like this? Can't I just add eth1.xx and eth1.yy to my interfaces config below and then configure those directly as bridged KVM guest NICs? • Any web interface to show deployments history with mcollective?

  I'm using mcollective & puppet for deployments. I would like to know if there is any user interface which allows me to choose a specific package/version and deploy and any user interface i can already use which allows me to show the deployments history and their status. (I saw that glu has a nice user interface i'm looking for something like it, http://linkedin.github.com/glu/docs/latest/html/tutorial.html ) I wondered if i could use glu (so that i can get their deployment history gui if they have a good one...) with mcollective but from what i understand they are parallel frameworks.

  I need help passing binary data into Java. I'm trying to use jbytearray but when the data gets into Java it appears corrupt. Can somebody give me a hand? Here's a snip of some example code. • How do I change which audio jacks are used for input and output?

  I'm using a Realtek HD audio card built-in my motherboard. The Windows driver comes with a control panel that allows me to select which back panel jacks are used for what. So for example I can make both the blue jack and green jack for output and only the red one for mic-in. (Whereas by default, the blue jack is for line in, which I never need.) How can I do the same under Linux? If possible, please don't suggest something that involves PulseAudio or JACK; I'd like to do it the plain way, e.g. by editing ALSA configuration files, if possible. The way I understand it, my problem should have nothing to do with software servers redirecting streams, just instructing the driver to treat this jack as so and so because it's hardware supported. • How do I fix skype on x86 11.10 desktop which garbles audio both ways in connection with a Windows user?

  Strange phenomena ? I have a friend I connect with and talk to regularly occasionally using video. He runs Windows XP with a Logitech webcam and mike. I run Windows XP with a Logitech webcam and mike, and a laptop with built in webcam and mike running both 11.10 x86 Desktop and Windows XP Home. We gab and ogle fine with these. But when I installed 11.10 x86 with GNOME 3.2 dual boot on the same machine with the Logitech webcam and mike, whenever I try to ogle and gab the audio is total garbled. When I make a test call to skype or call somebody on a landline or cell - there's no problem. In summary, everything works except for when running 11.10 x86 GNOME 3.2 connected to his Windows XP. Stumped on this end.

• Best way to distribute graphics, audio and levels with an SDL game?

  I'm working on finishing up a game written in C++ with SDL I've been working on for awhile, and I'm starting to ponder how I'm going to distribute it. It has hundreds of images that are loaded and used throughout the game, as well as a couple dozen .wav files for audio effects. What is the best way to distribute these? Should I just include the folders with all the files? Or is there a way I can package them into a single file, then open and extract them in my application? What's the best way to go about this?
