    I installed apache on ubuntu like so: apt-get install apache2 I initially had installed PHP by doing: apt-get install php5 That gave me php 5.3.x. Now I want to use the latest version php 5.4.x so I installed from source. Through the cli $ php -v outputs the correct version PHP 5.4.3 When I run phpinfo() through the web, I still get php5.3.x. How would I point apache to use my newly installed php instead?

  • Always keep files updated in Eclipse

    I keep lots of files/editors open in Eclipse. I also love using git stash and other git commands that essentially change the contents of my open files. Is there an Eclipse feature or plugin that will always keep the contents of my open files up to date and live? Currently if I put focus in an out of sync editor, I get an awkwardly worded dialog that I have to parse carefully every time. I wish it would just keep me synced like Textmate does.

  • Cannot log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g: ORA-28001

    I can no longer log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g. I get this error message: ORA-28001: the password has expired (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin) I could log into the server using SQL*Plus. I warned me that the password was going to expire in 7 days (which is not the same as being already expired). Following advice from several documents, I ran these commands from SQL*Plus: ALTER USER sys IDENTIFIED BY new_password; ALTER USER system IDENTIFIED BY new_password; SQL*Plus no longer warns about passwords, but I still cannot use the Enterprise Manager. Then I followed this to remove password expiration: ALTER PROFILE default LIMIT password_life_time UNLIMITED And I've also restarted the Oracle services. In case it was using cached credentials, I've tried to connect from several browsers in several computers. No way: I still get ORA-28001 in Enterprise Manager. What am I missing?     Recently I have implement apache 2.4.1 in my web server.The problem is the rotate logs seems to be not functioning.Here is the output in the error_log: [core:error] [pid 13060:tid 47015847145408] (2)No such file or directory The command line that i have put in the httpd.conf are such as below: CustomLog "|bin/rotatelogs -l /var/log/logfile.%Y.%m.%d 86400" combined Is there anything wrong here with my setup?For your information I've already tested it in apache 2.2.22 and everythings is perfectly working. What am I doing wrong here? Update 1: After doing a make clean and make distclean, I've reconfigured with the same parameters as above without any effect. The config.log is at Pastebin. Update 2: Modifying the LD_LIBRARY_PATH had no effect on the lib-deps of mod_ssl.so. UPDATE 3: I've compiled and recompiled many times, and verified with ldconfig that the OpenSSL libs dir is in my path, and included in ld.so.conf. Still cannot get httpd/mod_ssl to load the library at runtime.

  • MVC Portable Areas &ndash; Deploying Static Files

    This is the second post in a series related to build and deployment considerations as I’ve been exploring MVC Portable Areas: #1 – Using Web Application Project to build portable areas #2 – Conventions for deploying portable area static files #3 – Portable area static files as embedded resources As I’ve been digging more into portable areas, one of the things I’ve liked best is the deployment story which enables my *.aspx, *.ascx pages to be compiled into the assembly as embedded resources rather than having to maintain all those files separately. In traditional web forms, that was always the thing to prevented developers from utilizing *.ascx user controls across projects (see this post for using portable areas in web forms).  However, though the aspx pages are embedded, the supporting static files (e.g., images, css, javascript) are *not*. Most of the demos available online today tend to brush over this issue and focus solely on the aspx side of things. But to create truly robust portable areas, it’s important to have a good story for these supporting files as well.  I’ve been working with two different approaches so far (of course I’d really like to hear if other people are using alternatives). Scenario For the approaches below, the scenario really isn’t that important. It could be something as trivial as this partial view: 1: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl" %> 2: <img src="<%: Url.Content("~/images/arrow.gif") %>" /> Hello World! The point is that there needs to be careful consideration for *any* scenario that links to an external file such as an image, *.css, *.js, etc. In the example shown above, it uses the Url.Content() method to convert to a relative path. But this method won’t necessary work depending on how you deploy your portable area. One approach to address this issue is to build your portable area project with MSDeploy/WebDeploy so that it is packaged properly before incorporating into the host application. All of the *.cs files are removed and the project is ready for xcopy deployment – however, I do *not* need the “Views” folder since all of the mark up has been compiled into the assembly as embedded resources. Now in the host application we create a folder called “Modules” and deploy any portable areas as sub-folders under that: At this point we can add a simple assembly reference to the Widget1.dll sitting in the Modules\Widget1\bin folder. I can now render the portable image in my view like any other portable area. However, the problem with that is that the view results in this:   It couldn’t find arrow.gif because it looked for /images/arrow.gif and it was *actually* located at /images/Modules/Widget1/images/arrow.gif. One solution is to make the physical location of the portable configurable from the perspective of the host like this: 1: <appSettings> 2: <add key="Widget1" value="Modules\Widget1"/> 3: </appSettings> Using the <appSettings> section is a little cheesy but it could be better formalized into its own section. In fact, if were you willing to rely on conventions (e.g., “Modules\{areaName}”) then then config could be eliminated completely. With this config in place, we could create our own Html helper method called Url.AreaContent() that “wraps” the OOTB Url.Content() method while simply pre-pending the area location path: 1: public static string AreaContent(this UrlHelper urlHelper, string contentPath) 2: { 3: var areaName = (string)urlHelper.RequestContext.RouteData.DataTokens["area"]; 4: var areaPath = (string)ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[areaName]; 5:   6: return urlHelper.Content("~/" + areaPath + "/" + contentPath); With these two items in place, we just change our Url.Content() call to Url.AreaContent() like this: 1: <img src="<%: Url.AreaContent("/images/arrow.gif") %>" /> Hello World! and the arrow.gif now renders correctly:     Since we’re just using our own Url.AreaContent() rather than the built-in Url.Content(), this solution works for images, *.css, *.js, or any externally referenced files.  Additionally, any images referenced inside a css file will work provided it’s a relative reference and not an absolute reference. An alternative to this approach is to build the static file into the assembly as embedded resources themselves. I’ll explore this in another post (linked at the top).

  • Visual Studio search feature does not seem to be searching for text in CSS files [migrated]

    I noticed that when using Visual Studio's 'Find in files' search feature, it does not appear to search/find text in CSS files even though the text does exist. I can't find anything on the net regarding this issue and cannot determine even if Visual Studio allows you to search for text within CSS files. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this; Is it supposed to allow you to do this? If so, what reasons would explain why this is not working?

Is there any method to (or tool that will) tell me why Apache is denying access? (local rule in httpd.conf, file permissions, etc. I'm not looking for help with a specific configuration, instead I'm looking for a way to have the computer tell me what's wrong with my system and/or configuration.

  • Why doesn't apache2 respect my envvars file?

    My envvar files has these lines in it: export APACHE_RUN_USER=www-data export APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data My apache2.conf has these lines in it: # These need to be set in /etc/apache2/envvars User ${APACHE_RUN_USER} Group ${APACHE_RUN_GROUP} But when I run apache2 -M I get this: apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER} A temporary fix is to hard-code www-data into it my apache2.conf file. There was some speculation here that this was because some configuration script didn't replace the env vars correctly in my apache2.conf file. Regardless how do I get apache2 to consult my envvars file? As another data point this site seems to indicate the envvars is generated at build, but read by apache2ctl at runtime, suggesting that this file isn't just poop leftover by the build process.

    I have a VPS that is managed and am mysteriously running out of space, I think I found a few files I can delete. So just double checking it's ok to delete the Perl install files: /root/perl588installer.tar.gz (pretty sure this can go) /root/perl588installer/ (wasn't sure if this can go, I'm thinking it's just used when perl is installed) I rarely install this kind of thing myself but when I do I'm sure you can delete these files. From time to time, we get errors like this [Tue Sep 18 17:57:02 2012] [error] ajp_read_header: ajp_ilink_receive failed [Tue Sep 18 17:57:02 2012] [error] (120006)APR does not understand this error code: proxy: read response failed from 192.168.1.104:8009 (lrab) And apache switches to the pasive node (if its active) or fails with 503. Some things i have tried so far: I think that i have some performance issues with one of the applications, Here you can see a threadDump But i'm not quite sure about it. I also started to monitor the network connection. I have noticed that there are some pings lost when i have a "ping -f " so maybe it could be a network issue, but the success rate is 100% (so the lost packets are only a few among the flood, but maybe, i don't know, enough to break the link betwen apache and tomcat). I wrote a python script to check connectivity with timestamps on the pings, so i can know when the network fails. After sniffing the network , i can also see some RST packets, but i don't know if that is a normal behaviour (some applications do that to end a network communication). I have also noticed that the applications have problems communicating with the database, but im not even sure if this could be related or not. If you think so, i can post more info about it. I changed the connector on the tomcats to use the native one, but still the same. I need not even a solution to this, but maybe some guidance on how can i troubleshoot this better ¿Analyze threads, monitor mysql performance, sniff the traffic between apaches and tomcats? Ultimately, all i need is to balance the tomcat instances in Active/pasive mode, so if there is another way to do it, i could give it a try.

  • Allow certain users to access a specific directory?

    I'm trying to figure out how to allow certain users who are also me to access a directory of files that I want to use for all of my users. I'm using cPanel and I used WHM to create three separate accounts. The files I want to use are on account1 in the directory /home/account1/public_html/source/engines and I want the directory /home/account2/public_html/source/engines to use the same exact files without having to upload them to both places every time I change them, so I created a simple symbolic link and added account2 to the group account1 (while still keeping its own group as the primary). It still gives me a Permission Denied error though. Is there any way I can grant account2 and other accounts that I create for myself access to those files? I don't want them to be global to all users because I don't want my hosted users to be able to access them, only my users. groups account1 returns account1 : account1 groups account2 returns account2 : account2 account1 /home/account1/public_html/source/engines and all its files belongs to account1:account1 Any other information you might need just ask.

  • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

  • U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

    Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

Here is what I found on the net: brainstorm idea blueprint Some use cases: Sharing music on local machine Simple git repository sharing (just make a bare repository writeable to many people) --- i know that there are solutions like gitosis Allow many developers to modify test instance of php app without giving them root (i guess they would copy files) --- I'm leading a team of nonprofit junior developers and I need to keep that one simple! EDIT AFAIK setting SGID bit is not enugh, it only affects newly created files --- and basic workflow for these use cases ivnolves copying and other operations (which cleave file's gid unchanged)

    I want to use netcat as a proxy to log http requests and responses to files, then tail these to inspect traffic. Think wireshark. Tried the following where 'fifo' is a named pipe, 'in' and 'out' are files, netcat proxy on port 8080, server on port 8081. while true; do cat fifo | nc -l -p 8080 | tee -a in | nc localhost 8081 | tee -a out 1fifo; done Problems: Netcat stop responing after first request (while loop ignored?). Netcat fails with msg localhost [127.0.0.1] 8081 (tproxy) : Connection refused if server unavailable on 8081. Question: Is it possible to "lazily" connect to 8081 when request is made? I.e. I do not want to have 8081 running when netcat is started.
