I am looking for a boot CD that will boot a power PC (linux, bsd, OSX) and allow read/write access to HFS+ and NTFS partitions. What is the best option?
Every time I quit a game such as Braid, Fallout3, AVP all sound on thePC dies (Control Panel No Audio Devices) I installed a new sound card (SB Audigy) and updated to the latest drivers, and it still happens. It happens with steam games and without. Anybody know what's wrong and how I can fix it? I'm on Win XP SP 2
What I'm asking here is, if I order PC3200 memory is it all going to be 1.8V, or will some be 2.5, some 1.8, etc... I don't mean variation within a specific part #, but rather across part numbers, is there a variation where some PC 3200 memory would be incompatible with others because it is 2.5 v 1.8V .
Sorry that I can't be very specific, only symtoms are provided:
Monday morning
a CentOS box, 1GB ram, Pentium 4
web server (thin, rails) does not response (too slow) to a browser of another PC
ping it, ok
ssh into it, ok
a few minutes later, the web server is back to normal speed, serving web requests well
ping it, ok
ssh into it, ok
however, top does not run
what should I look at, about this 'top does not run' symptom? thx

I have a SYABAS-based NAS Multimedia Server, which is connected via LAN to a PC running embedded Linux.
I can get a list of content on the NAS device, but when I press play, it does not play, but displays the text path of the media file itself.
In short it does not play streamed content, whereas the same content I am able to play using Windows based Internet Explorer.
I meed a media player to work with embedded linux....
I just got a very quiet Dell Optiplex 960 (with dual monitor video card) and wanted a 3rd monitor (only a PCI slot available). The PCI video card I got has a relatively loud (compared to this quiet PC) fan.
I'm looking for a quiet card. Need not be very powerful as it's for the third screen which I don't use for video or games, etc.
Any suggestions?
my windows that i open or bring up or i believe a number of other things i do often "disappear"(I believe usually move behind another window that i have open,or maybe becom3e minimized, or perhaps disappear entirely). My question is what determines on a pc windows 7 64-bit computer how long a window stays open, or what determines which window is up front? It is enormously frustrating to have a window i am trying to approach with my cursor or am already working in disappear. Somebody, please help.
Jon
We have just changed our DNS record to point to a new server running IIS. How long will it take until the address is changed to the new server? Some people can still see the old server and some can see the new.
I have flushed the dns on my pc and it seems to be fine although it doesn't with another of my pcs.
Thanks
Since I found out about Outlook's "Cached Exchange Mode" I've been using it, and I also set it up on every PC I come across. I think it's a great feature that improves the efficiency of of every Outlook user, and I don't understand why it's not ON by default.
My question is - are there any disadvantages to using Cached Exchange Mode? (Besides the obvious fact that it consumes a bit more space, which I don't see as a big issue nowadays)
I've got a library of MAX files from an old Visioneer Scanner that used ScanSoft PaperPort. I don't have thePC that I used to scan them anymore, and I don't have the CD for PaperPort. Does anyone know of a utility I can use to open and convert .MAX files to something more useful like a JPEG?
(I'd prefer something that batch converts -- but if I can get a utility that will even allow one conversion, I could probably figure out how to use AutoHotkey or something like that to automate.)
Thanks for your help
My Del Dimension E521 running Windows 7 puts itself in sleep mode each night -- despite the fact that I have chosen a power option that specifies NEVER
Each morning I find the monitor blank and I have to hit the power button on thePC at which point Windows "resumes". The system event log shows this:
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
Date: 3/27/2010 3:21:10 AM
Description:
The system is entering sleep.
Sleep Reason: System Idle
My specific power options are:
Turn off Display : 20 Minutes
Put the computer to sleep : Never
Is there some other setting coming into play here?
Note: Please do not mod down or close. Im not a stupid PC user asking to fix my pc problem. I am intrigued and am having a deep technical look at whats going on.
I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic.
I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies.

So it seems that the malware has hooked into explorer.exe and hidden its self quite well as a Norton Scan doesn't pick anything up.
I have looked in Windows firewall and it shouldn't be letting this traffic through.
I have had a look into the messages explorer.exe is sending in Spy++ and the only related ones I can see are socket connections etc...
My question is what can I do to look into this deeper?
What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic?
I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest.
Edit:
Had a look at Deoendency Walker and Process Explorer.
Both great tools. Here is a image of the TCP connections for explorer.exe in Process Explorer http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/3563/61930284.gif
Is there any app where I could control the camera of my phone remotely(even bluetooth would do) I have a Nokia 5800 xpress music.
The app could either be a stand alone app installed on the mobile phone than could click snaps at predefined intervals or if there is a app that I can install on my PC and then control my phone's camera via bluetooth or wifi or anything else.
Is this possible?
I have CeontOS machines connected to LCD via KVM which causes failure to properly detect screen resolution and I'm stuck with 800x600 until I reset X server with the LCD connected directly to thePC. How can I enforce higher screen resolutions?
Thanks.
Hi folks,
I have a PC with Win7 and an iPod touch.
Win7 is connected to the internet through a 3G dongle, I have set up an Ad Hoc wifi network and ticked "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection".
I have connected to both networks, but I'm getting "No Internet access" as access type for the Ad Hoc connection.
Any ideas?
I'm looking for a sound/voice recording application that I would just let run on my PC all the time. It would either start/stop based on whether there is "anything worth recording" or maybe just record constantly but discard silent segments.
EDIT
If you have OS specific suggestions, Windows would need to be supported.
Of course, if your solution only works on other OSes I'd like to hear about them anyway.
I've followed the instructions and installed and configured the Windows Virtual PC XP Mode. I've added it as a machine on the network and can log into it and use network resources.
In the process I removed the saved credentials, which are just a default local login to the VM.
I need to know how to set this so that the VM auto logs in with the domain account credentials used to log into the physical computer.
Google hasn't helped me find the answer.
Any recommendations on a program that I can manually start/stop to run in the background that will measure (count) how many times a key is pressed on the keyboard? As a software developer, I'd like to know which keys are used the most when I develop from project to project and/or from language to language.
I'd like to be able to manually start and stop the program.
This is for a Windows PC (xp, vista, 7)
We have a sever that shares all the printers. ThePC's that are running on XP professional get a error message quoting (Connect to Printer). The only way I can find to get around the problem is by restating the printer and as soon is it comes online you can then add it but you have not got long. do you think it could be anything to-do with updates on the sever?
the sever system is running Windows Server 2003
any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I need a simple utility that allow me to check if a PC, attached to a local network, is able to reach a specified address:port using specified protocol like TCP or UDP
Machine's OS I will use to do the check is Windows XP.
Can you help me, please?
I've used the option to upgrade SQL Server 2008 to R2 but I noticed it gets to about 20-30% and it just sits on this screen:
I've left it alone for over 2 hours, thePC is definately not frozen cause I can click the help or move the window around but it says "Install_sql_common_core_loc_Cpu64_1033_action: Install Files. Copying new files" for the past 2 hours. I have tried to do the install from a CD as well as a network drive, both with the same issue.
Is there anything I can check or do ?
When you use standard windows open file dialog and start typing it puts files whose name starts with what you type to drop down list. But on another pc with same Windows 7 it also puts first of them into input box in which you type - like FF does with URLS, allowing you to immediately press Enter (without pressing 'Down' to select file).
I don't know why this behavior is different, but I want suggested file name shown in input box.
How could it be achieved?
Thanks.
I'm monitoring my PC for suspected overheating, and I want to know what the Speed01, Speed02, and Speed03 controls do in SpeedFan?
My CPU is a Pentium 4, 2.8GHz single core. Does my system temperature look okay?
