    I am told that Huffman coding is used as loseless data compression algorithm but also am told that real data compress software do not employ huffman coding,cause if the keys are not distributed decentralized enough,the compressed file could be even larger than the orignal file. (from MySQL Forge Wiki) The most obvious pros and cons are pros: Reduced payload size cons: Increased computation time So, is compressed protocol something I should enable whenever I can afford servers with adequate specs? Are there other factors I should consider?

  • How to encrypt/decrypt a long string in PHP?

    I doubt if this is encryption but I can't find a better phrase. I need to pass a long query string like this: http://test.com/test.php?key=[some_very_loooooooooooooooooooooooong_query_string] The query string contains NO sensitive information so I'm not really concerned about security in this case. It's just...well, too long and ugly. Is there a library function that can let me encode/encrypt/compress the query string into something similar to the result of a md5() (similar as in, always a 32 character string), but decode/decrypt/decompress-able?

    When I publish a Flash file that contains any sound (such as a WAV file), I can choose the sound compression method (MP3, raw, ADPCM, etc.). My question is about the mp3 compression and it's licence. Flash gives me the option to compress a WAV file as mp3, but is the licence to use the mp3 format included? I have paid for a Flash licence, does it give the right to use mp3 in my SWF files freely or do I have to pay royalties to someone else?

    Sorry about the bad heading, but the question was not easy to compress into one sentence... I have two lists of contigs (list1 and list2). They contain mostly unique contigs, but with some overlap. I want to compare list1 and list2 and then create a list3 that contains all contigs in list1 minus those also present in list2. Is this possible with a simple cat/paste/grep/sort/uniq kind of batch command? Thanks!

I am running visual studio as administrator (says that in the program bar) and I am a full admin on my machine (can access other accounts, etc). How can I acess this path (folder)?     First, Python Newbie; be patient/kind. Next, once a month I receive a large text file (think 7 Million records) to test for duplicate values. This is catalog information. I get 7 fields, but the two I'm interested in are a supplier code and a full orderable part number. To determine if the record is dupliacted, I compress all special characters from the part number (except . and #) and create a compressed part number. The test for duplicates becomes the supplier code and compressed part number combination. This part is fairly straight forward. Currently, I am just copying the original file with 2 new columns (compressed part and duplicate indicator). If the part is a duplicate, I put a "YES" in the last field. Now that this is done, I want to be able to go back (or better yet, at the same time) to get the previous record where there was a supplier code/compressed part number match.     Basically, I have an application that uses a flip-book style animation technique. I am simply cycling through around 1000 320x480 pngs at 12fps, and everything works really well. Except for the fact that 1000 images takes up a ton of disk space. Ideally I'd like to be able to compress these images as a movie file and pull out each frame as I need them, or simply play back a movie with frame by frame precision. Ideas?

    I'm implementing serial key functionality in my application. User needs to enter at least 64bit number in order to register the application. Because typing number like 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 will take a while I want to compress it a bit. The first guess was to code this number hexadecimally but it still is quite long (0x7FFF FFFF FFFF FFFF). Is there any standard method in .NET to code this number alphanumerically using for example: digits, upper-case and lower-case characters?

    What my app here basically does is it captures a photo or import from gallery, and when the Upload button is pressed, the image will be uploaded to a localhost server. Before I implemented AsyncTask into the process, it doesn't have any problem uploading whatsoever. Now that I've put AsyncTask, everything went wrong. I don't know which part that I do wrong in this phase.
