Sorry to ask something so basic, but I just can't find it.
I found some example code which seems to do exactly what I want, but it doesn't include a uses clause.
What's the simplest way to create and write to a file in Java?
I know this is a very basic question, but the web is full of different answers for different versions of Java and it would be nice to have an answer here on StackOverflow.
I have a VM running Ubuntu Server 9.10 running a basic web server setup. Whenever I run an apt function it will pause for around 1 minute at 'Waiting for headers...'. It will eventually clear through and continue as normal but it is a bit of an annoyance.
Everything else on the server seems to run fine. Any ideas?

Does anyone have any good pointers on designing the UI for an android application and some good practises?
Obviously I'm aware of the basic principles involved with designing the layout in XML. Also, that you have a stack of activities. But I'm interested in some approaches to creating the interfaces and also how to design an application around those intentions.
I've seen developers use various methods to prevent spam on a basic html contact form
Method 1 is where the developer uses a Captcha image and Method 2 where only a Question is asked eg. Are you Human? with a radio button.
Which one is the better one to use and why?
I'm interested in learning about what additional features and APIs an app has access to when an iPhone is jailbroken. Can someone provide me with some basic resources to learn about this? I would be most interested in:
documentation on the private APIs
filesystem layout
app configuration, e.g. how did WinterBoard replace SpringBoard? Apps that replace the lockscreen?
tools needed
Suggestions appreciated.
I have gone through with some of the sample examples of blackberry.
And in some classes I have found some variables are starting from _ like _address and some of them are ALLCAPS.
So, i guess it's bit different then the basic Java naming conventions.
So, can anybody let me know that is there any difference between Java and blackberry naming convention ?
Thanks in advance.

I've always been fascinated by microcontrollers and I'm planning to do a few hobby projects just to satisfy my inner geek :)
I'm looking for ideas and motivation, so what did you develop using a microcontroller?
If possible please state the microcontroller and/or development environment and an estimate on hardware costs beyond the basic equipment (if applicable).
I'm interested in both successful and failed projects and any problems you encountered.
While configuring my just installed Visual Studio 2010 Professional, I mistakenly opted for Visual Basic mode. I want to correct my selection and change it to C#. How can I do that?
When using reflection we typically just was the basic System.Reflection API but I am wondering if anyone know of a nice "wrapper" layer or API that has a more "schema style" approach? (e.g. kind of like a code generators DB schema view)
Currently a user makes a purchase and then a license is generated and sent to that user, but the license isn't tied to a physical computer so there is nothing to prevent the user sharing the license with someone.
I heard people talk about creating a license tied to the mac address of the computer, so the license only works on that computer. Now I know how to get the mac address in code but I dont understand how I can do this step when they first make the purchase on the web, so please what is the basic algorithm for node locked licenses ?
When a user moves the Google map, I would like to display items in the viewing range of the user automatically. How can I efficiently and quickly display the items?
I have basic understanding of calling getBounds() method every time the user moves the map, but I am not sure how I can efficiently search and get from my database the items within the lat/lng of the bounds of the current viewport. Is there easier and faster way of doing this?

Back when I was at school, I remember tinkering with a Mac game where you programmed little robots in a sort of pseudo-assembler language which could then battle each other. They could move themselves around the arena, look for opponents in different directions, and fire some sort of weapon. Pretty basic stuff, but I remember it quite fondly, even if I can't remember the name.
Are there any good modern day equivalents?
Just finished reading ch23 in the excellent 'Beautiful Code' http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596510046
on Distributed Programming with MapReduce. I understand that MapReduce is a programming system designed for large-scale data processing problems, but I have a hard time getting my head around the basic examples given and how I might apply them in real world situations.
Can someone give a simple example of MapReduce implemented using either java, javascript or actionscript?

I am looking to get into web application development. I am an undergrad CS major with experience in programming desktop apps, but with only basic knowledge regarding how web apps work. Any suggestions of where to start? Javascript, php, perl, ruby, python? Should I look into frameworks like django, seaside, ruby on rails, etc at first or wait until I am more experienced to use those?
I've heard that given a programmer with enough time and skill in any particular language and enough lines of code, then any program could be created with any given language. I know its certainly not going to be cost-efficient, for instance, to rewrite Adobe Photoshop in BASIC, but could a good enough and patient enough programmer potentially create any program in any language?
Hi I have a site that uses flex and calls controller actions which returns json to the flex. This works fine in a dev server , the folder that has the flex app lives inside the web project and in the dev ennvironment, makes calls hostname, ie www.someurl.com
in the actual live scenario, this will be an intranet so not hostname to call, the flex app seems to have trouble calling http://localhost/Virtual directory name
it seems to totally miss the virtual directory name. I am obviously missing something basic, any help?
I'm recently working in a company where we use PowerBuilder extensively. The only documentation or resources we have access to is some basic course saying things like "Do A, then B and you'll get C". I was wondering if there is some better crash courses or tutorials for this language on the net or somewhere else which actually explain something instead of simply taking me by the hand.
