  • Why aren't web frameworks simple, elegant and fun like programming languages? [on hold]

    When I think of pretty much any programming language - like C, C++, PHP, SQL, JavaScript, Python, ActionScript, Haskell, Lua, Lisp, Java, etc - I'm like awesome I would love to develop a computer application using any of those languages. But when I think of web frameworks(I do mostly PHP) - like Cake, CI, Symfony, Laravel, Zend, Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Rails, Django, etc - I'm like god no. Why aren't there web frameworks that provide me with simple, fun and powerful constructs like a programming language?

  • How should I land my next consulting gig? [closed]

    For the last couple of years, I've been working on speculative projects, expanding my skillset with side work, and paying the bills while having a blast consulting for startups. However, for a number of personal reasons, I need to spend the next 6-9 months maximizing my cash income. I want to put this into effect starting in early August. So that means I have one month to put the necessary client list/portfolio/resume together to start making this happen. As a programmer, I am very proficient in building Django web apps. I can write the necessary SQL, python, javascript, and css to build every part of a Django app, and then do the system administration necessary to deploy on AWS using EC2. I can also rig up a CDN to work seemlessly with the app using S3 and Cloudfront. I have built GIS applications using GeoDjango and PostGIS, and I have constructed social video apps by implementing Encoding.com as a service to prepare raw video files for consumption on the web. I am also moderately proficient in programming PHP, Java, and C#. I have built web apps in PHP, and desktop apps in Java and C#. I have dabbled with Android applications and iPhone apps, but nothing I would show off. I have experience doing SEO, social media marketing, and content marketing. Many of my clients have needed their apps promoted after they were built, and I was always happy to oblige when I could. I have also worked with biometrics technology including fingerprints for government contractors. This was as much a business analyst role as it was a programming gig, as I had to help answer RFPs, make checklists, and work around reems and reems of regulations to build applications that met very large bureaucratic requirements. I only have two real requirements for my next gig(s): 1) Work remotely. I live in North East Ohio, and I don't plan on leaving, but I wouldn't mind traveling one or two weeks out of every month to service clients who need on-site help. 2) $60.00hr-$∞ USD contracting rate. So what should I do for the next 30 days to achieve this? Should I target some large company and learn the requisite buzzwords to impress them? Should I learn some new language or technology? Polish some skill that I already have? Should I build something using my current skillset, or with some new technology? Should I put a website for my consultancy together to market myself? Should I do that using latest technology x, y, and z? Or should I just slap something up on Tumblr? I'm willing to do anything (moral) over the next 4 weeks to put myself into a position to maximize my income, and I'm open to all and every idea Programmers users may have. Let me hear them.

  • Making headers readable on a multi colored background

    So the client wants a multi-colored background (think 4 colors of paint splats randomly all over the page. Because of this the headers are a bit hard to read. I've currently got them set up as black text with some white drop shadow, but it's still pretty hard to read in IE. How can I make the headers legible regardless of what is behind them (it's a CMS so position on the page is liable to change regularly)?

  • What do you do when working with multiple languages with different capitalization schemes?

    I'm making a webapp using Django. The Python convention for naming variables is lowercase_with_underscores, but the Javascript convention is camelCase. In addition, I've seen many people use lowercase-with-hyphens for CSS identifiers. Would you suggest using all three naming conventions where appropriate, or picking one and using it, even if the other two recommend something else? Switching back and forth isn't a huge problem, but it can still be mental overhead.

  • Correct permissions for /var/www and wordpress

    Hello and thank you in advance! I am relatively new to ubuntu, so please excuse the newbie-ness of this question... I have set up a LAMP server (ubuntu server 11.10) and I have access via SSH and to the "it works" page from a web browser from inside my network (via ip address) and from outside using dyndns. I have a couple of projects in development with some outside developers and I want to use this server as a development server for testing and for client approvals. We have some Wordpress projects that sit in subdirectories in /var/www/wordpress1 /var/www/wordpress2, etc. I cannot access these sub directories from a browser in order to set up WP--or (I assume) to see the content on a browser. I get a 403 Forbidden error on my browser. I assume that this is a permissions problem. Can you please tell me the proper settings for the permissions to: 1) Allow the developers and me to read/write. 2) to allow WP set up and do its thing 3) Allow visitors to access the site(s) via the web. I should also mention that the subfolder are actually simlinks to folder on another internal hdd--I don't think this will make a difference, but I thought I should disclose. Since I am a newbie to ubuntu, step-by-step directions are greatly appreciated!     I have 3 rotating banners on one 728x90 position on my website, so every time a page is loaded another banner is shown. One of these is AdSense. Is it legal, I mean is this strictly prohibited or not? Because, the code is basically stored in db table in my CMS module in Wordpress, so I guess it is OK. But I am asking to be sure.     I'm trying to set up graphite on my Mac OS X 10.7 lion, i've set up apache to call the python graphite script via WSGI, but when i try to access it, i get a forbiden from apache and in the error log. "client denied by server configuration: /opt/graphite/webapp/graphite.wsgi" I've checked that the scripts location is allowed in httpd.conf, and the permissions of the file, but they seem correct. What do i have to do to get access.     Hello! I have a web server based on Ubuntu Server 9.10 with this software: apache 2 PHP 5.3 MySQL 5 Python 2.5 Few of my websites are PHP based, few use python/django through mod_wsgi. For month or so, every day my apache server stops responding until I manually restart it. Error logs show: [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25059 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25061 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 24930 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25084 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25105 exit, attempting to continue anyway and so on. I tried to google this problem but it seems, that I can't find a solution there. How can I determine the cause of this error and how do I fix it? Thank you for your help.     I'm using several django projects running on the same apache instance through mod_wsgi, configured with virtualhost for each site, see the httpd.conf here. For one of the sites I want to use static-cache (staticgenerator), so I set up a directory with .htaccess file which contains: RequestHeader unset X-Forwarded-Host RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}/index.html !-f RewriteRule ^(.*) http://127.0.0.1:3456/$1 [P] where 3456 is the django port on the server. Using this rewrite rule, the request is always forwarded to the mod_wsgi handler, even if the file or directory exists, and if the file index.html exists the request shows as request-path/index.html. I tried another setup: RequestHeader unset X-Forwarded-Host RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond $1 !-d RewriteCond $1index.html !-f RewriteRule ^(.*) http://127.0.0.1:3456/$1 [P] but got almost the same results. All requests are transferred to the mod_wsgi handler, but the request path is now the original one. To sum it up: What is the correct RewriteCond to use here? How do you transfer a request to the mod_wsgi handler? Is it the right way? If that's not the way to do it, then how do you serve static files from a directory when they exist, and when they don't you serve from apache/mode_wsgi? Thanks for your help.
