  • Graphics driver for ubuntu on dell latitude XT

    Hi, we have a laptop (dell latitude xt) on our company, and we would like to install ubuntu on it. windows 7 works fine out of the box, so the hardware is fine. since this laptop has a touchscreen we just installed ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition 32x.   • Can't boot from SATA dvd, seen as SerialCH1_Master

    Here's the problem: I have an old computer based on an AsRock motherbord, the p4vt8+. I have 2 IDE HDs , one per each channel (IDE0 and IDE1) and I have a SATA dvd LG GH22N550. When I go into the BIOS panel on the boot devices list I can see IDE0 and IDE1 but not the dvd that I need to install Windows. When the computer is booting I can see it under the voice SerialCH1_Master. I know I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is.

    Virtual Win XP Mode stopped HP LJ Pro M1212nf MFP printing in Win 7 Pro: I am running Windows 7 Pro with Virtual Windows XP Mode. My printer is HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP attached directly to a USB port of the computer. This printer was working fine in Windows 7, until I tried to attach the printer to the Virtual Windows XP Mode in order to load the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode. At that point, the printer disappeared from the list of USB devices on the toolbar at the top of the window of the Virtual Windows XP Mode. After installing the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer did not work in that mode and also no longer worked in Windows 7. In Windows 7 and in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, print files are sent to the print queue, but are never printed. In Windows 7, the print queue states that the printer is offline. In the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer can be toggled from "Print Offline" to "Print Online", but no print files are ever printed from the print queue. The printer acts as though it is no longer connected to the computer, even though it is still physically connected to the USB port of the computer. How can I get the printer to work again in Windows 7? (At this point, I am no longer interested in using the Virtual Windows XP Mode.) I have tried a large number of things to find and fix the printer problem, but have had no success. Device Manager cannot see the printer even though it is physically connected via USB port (have tried different USB ports) to the computer. Restoring Win 7 and Virtual Win XP Mode to times before the problem does not fix the problem. How can I get the computer to see the printer, so that I can print again in Win 7?

  • Two SATA HDDs connected using a Black Duet HDD Docking Station via eSATA to my Laptop, second drive

    Hi I am using a BlacX Duet HDD Docking Station to connect a 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA HDD (WD10000LSRTL) and a HITACHI SATA DESKSTAR (0S00163) to my G51VX (BestBuy) laptop via the eSATA port. When I plug in both HDDs in to the Docking Station, connect the docking station to my laptop and start Windows 7 (64-bit Ultimate), only the HDD in the first drive in the port actually shows up in My Computer and Disk Management. If I swap the drives positions I can get them both to work, but never at the same time. I also checked in the bios settings on the laptop, under Advanced-IDE Configuration-SATA Operation Mode, and it displays: SATA Operation Mode: [Enhanced] AHCI Port0 [Hard Disk] Device: Hard Disk Vendor: ST9320421AS LBA Mode: Supported S.M.A.R.T.: Supported AHCI Port5 [Hard Disk] Device: Hard Disk Vendor: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 Size: 100.00 GB LBA Mode: Supported S.M.A.R.T.: Supported There should be a third drive, but I'm not certain why it is not being picked up. Additionally, before I played around with the settings in the IDE configuration, it used to display the DVD as well.

  • Screensaver does not work for one user account, but does for the other

    Both my screensaver and my "turn off monitor" power saver never come on for one user account on my computer, but it does for the other. It worked before. I can't think of anything I did just before this started happening. I'm using Windows 7 Pro SP1 with the default Aero theme, my screensaver is set to Mystify and should come on after 10 minutes. My power saver setting is set to Balanced, the Turn Off Monitor setting is set to 15 minutes, and the Sleep setting is set to Never. This all works absolutely fine on my user account, but if my wife's user account is logged in, it doesn't work. I don't have any antivirus, I'm not using a wireless keyboard or mouse, and I don't have MagicJack. I have restarted the computer many times since I've seen this problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Installing a regular Java plugin is IMHO a real security risk for non-IT people. Normally Java applets run in a sandbox and the applet cannot do anything harmful to your computer. If an applet, however, needs to do something like read-only accessing your filesystem e.g. uploading an image, you have to give it more privileges. Usually that's ok but I think not everyone knows that you give the applet the same privileges to your computer as your user has! And that's everything Java asks you: That looks as 'harmful' as a self-signed SSL certificate on a random page where no sensitive data is exchanged. The user will click on Run! You can try that at home using JyConsole, that's Jython (Python on Java)! Simply type in python code, e.g. import os os.system('cat /etc/passwd') or worse DON'T TYPE IN THAT CODE ON YOUR COMPUTER!!! import os os.system('rm -rf ~') ... Does anyone know how you can disable the possibily of privilege escalation? And by the way, does anyone know why SUN displays only a dialog as harmless as the one shown above (the self-signed-SSL-certificate-dialog from Firefox 3 and above is much clearer here!)?   • Can I get an adapter for usb 3.0 to gigabit, or a gigabit switch with usb 3.0?

    Basically I want to be able to attach USB 3.0 external portable hard drives to my network and maintain at least gigabit speeds. I can think of four ways to do this, two of which I know exist: 1) NAS - get an NAS which features USB 3.0 and gigabit 2) Gigabit router with a USB 3.0 port and I want to know if these two exist: 3) gigabit switch (multiple gigabit ports) with at least one USB 3.0 port 4) USB 3.0 to gigabit adapter The gigabit adapter would be similar to this: http://www.addonics.com/products/nas30u2.php except that that is only USB 2.0 so it is not true gigabit, as gigabit is 125MBps but USB 2.0 is only 60MBps, so that adapter only has a maximum transfer speed of 60MBps and the "gigabit" is practically useless.

  • How does it hurt to use Linux (Ubuntu) as a guest OS for all my tasks?

    I have a machine running Windows, where the disk has two partitions C (50 GB) and D (250GB). I do research in Information Retrieval and need to work with a large corpus (more than 50 GB) and in Linux. So if I want to install Linux on the existing system, keeping the Windows installation intact, will it be fine to run it in a virtual box? (say, QEMU, VMWare, etc.) An alternative is using Wubi. In that case the Linux installation has to be on drive C. Then, if I keep a small Linux installation (say 5GB) on C, and my corpus on D (mounted in Linux), how will it affect the performance of my programs which would be accessing the mounted Windows drive D. Is it feasible to use Linux this way? Which of the above is better if at all they are a way out? Note : Since my post in July 2010, I have been using and have tried several ways of maintaining a disk-image that I can mount in Linux. I had a 100GB qcow2 disk and a 100GB raw disk, both formatted to an EXT3 file system. I was mounting and connecting to the qcow2 disk using qemu-nbd. The problem was that every now and then, the connection to the disk would get lost and the running programs would throw disk I/O errors. The raw disk would mount and work fine as a loop mounted device, but when writing data to it, the mount.ntfs program would hog the CPU and the process would take an enormous amount of time. I was in fact running make on a piece of software located on this raw disk, and after a point of time make was waiting while mount.ntfs would show 100% CPU usage.

  • How can I set up multiple dynamic users to update a single network's dynamic IP

    On my home network we are allocated a dynamic IP. I want to configure ddclient (or an equivalent) to send IP updates to DNS-O-Matic/OpenDNS only when I am on my home network. I do not want to send IP updates when I'm on my office network. Can this be done? I am prepared to use different FLOSS software or a different free DNS service. Additionally, there are multiple users who may be on the home network or away on other networks. How can we configure ddclient on each machine so that whoever is on the home network updates the IP (i.e. so we don't have to rely on a particular machine being on the network to update the IP). OpenDNS support have said we can't simply install updater software on each machine.

  • Performance variation

    During my time spent working with multiple machines, I have noticed that performance of the same machine doing the same tasks in the same order differs and sometimes the difference is big enough to be noticeable. This applies to all the machines I've owned and/or maintained (old and modern). Some examples (many of them you may have noticed yourself) that sometimes are completed in different time frames: POST OS installation Hardware tests and operations (usually executed within a customized OS such as one of the many DOS variants), HDD tests and "low level" formats Software installation or other tasks (such as benchmarks) within a general purpose OS (Windows, Linux, etc) I can imagine this is caused by the fact that a machine is built with many components having to communicate as a whole and since the mechanical and electronic parts aren't perfect the overhead occurs. In the last example, I assume the OS complexity and concurrently running multiple processes has some additional effect as well. However, I'm wondering if this hardware imperfection and overhead is indeed that high to be humanly noticeable? Maybe there are other factors that are influencial as much or even more? So, in short - why? To emphasize: the difference is noticeable on the same machine performing the same tasks and this applies to ANY machine in my experience. I'm not comparing machine to machine performance.

  • Blue screen of death while installing any Adobe Air application

    Whenever I try to install an Air application I get a Blue Screen and then my system restarts. I cannot even take a screenshot of it. This happens with every air application I try to install. I also searched for the same on Adobe forums and found the same problem being faced by someone else. His problem was resolved by uninstalling a software named "Folder Lock". I searched my hard disk for this software and found one, so I deleted that software (shift+delete) and removed all it's traces from registry too but that still doesn't solved the problem. I also tried disabling the antivirus software and then install the air application but this also didn't helped. Here is the screenshot of the BSOD. I was able to install air applications earlier, but now I can't. Anybody having same sort of problem. One colleague of mine is also having the same problem. Please help me out. My system's config is as follows: Windows XP Home sp3 Flash Builder 4, with SDK 4.1, 3.5 installed in it. Adobe Air v 2.5 1.5 GB RAM 1.66 MHz processor Thanks

    I'm using mailx on my raspberry pi to try to send text messages updates for event monitoring. My phone number: 9876543210 My phone's email-to-text gateway address: [email protected] I can 1) Send emails from my raspberry pi to various email addresses. mail -r [email protected] -s "My Subject" [email protected] < body.txt and off it goes and is successfully delivered. 2) Send emails from various email address (not on RPi) using mailx to the above phone-email address and have them delivered as text messages. However, when sending emails to [email protected] from the Raspberry Pi using mailx the emails seem to spiral into the void and are never heard of again (no errors, no undeliverable messages, nothing). Does anyone know what could be causing this to go awry? Something about the basic deployment of the mail server on the pi? EDIT Based on @kobaltz's suggestion, I used sendmail instead. This led to a hang, then an error that stated that I lacked a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). I then used this website's instructions to add a domain name to the RPi. To paraphrase: I have set the FQDN in /etc/hostname: my-host-name.my-domain.com and /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.5 my-host-name.my-domain.com my-host-name Then add to /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: MASQUERADE_AS(`my-domain.com') MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`my-host-name.my-domain.com') FEATURE(`masquerade_entire_domain') FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope') I put this in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf, BEFORE the MAILER() lines, ran sendmailconfig, answered Yes to the questions about using the existing files, and restarted sendmail.     I had an HFS+ formatted drive that was going bad and wouldn't mount at all on OSX. I created an image using ddrescue on linux, and was able to save most of it. I can mount the drive and see the data just fine in linux using this: mount -o loop -t hfsplus dd_image mountpoint This doesn't work on my OSX system since hfsplus isn't a valid filesystem type. If I try: mount -t hfs image mountpoint It complains that it needs a block device. What's the fix here?

    We are creating a fairly decent system with crossfire. The issue we are having is apparently the video cards are physically to heavy to be supported purely by the motherboard and case mounts. Whenever we have the case horizontal everything works fine however when we bring the case upright the computer stops working. Relevant Info: Video Cards (2) - Sapphire 5870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102856) MotherBoard - Asus M4A79T Deluxe Case - CoolerMaster 922 HAF To me it looks as if an additional support bracket that could hold up the end of the card would be required (included with the viideo cards!!!) So i was wondering if it was possible to reprogram that button to open another file or program on my computer? And if so what are the requirements and how would i go about doing it?
