• Upgrading Active Directory from 2000 to 2008

  Our config is currently: 1 Windows 2000 domain controller running ISA2000, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2003 domain controller as main file server, prob cert server as well, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2008/Exchange2010 domain controller as Exchange server, DHCP,DNS Currently getting FRS errors on files server journalwrap error Currently getting FRS errors on othe DC's can't replicate from above Exchange DC holds Schema, rid,pdc, and infastructure roles File Server holds Domain namaing operation master role WOW, I didn't set this up, just inherited it. Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away? • Vertical alignment problem in textbox in Microsoft Word 2007

  I pardon as its not a programming question at all. But if anybody can answer this it will be usefull for me. In MS word 2007 I drew a textbox and entered some text. Then I right clicked on textbox and went to format shape Then went to TextBox tab and reduced the top internal margin to 0.1 cm. But still it seems there is too much space at the top inside the textbox. I am not able to position the text exactly at the vertical middle of textbox. If I choose the auto-rezide option in format Shape, the textBox size is increases automatically but the text remains exactly at vertical and horizontal middle of textbox. but anyhow I need the textbox to be small. This is very minor but annoying problem. Can anybody help?

• css background image is being cut off..

  I have an unordered list and the background image is being cut off when trying to place it next to the text. I'm using jquery to add the class to the anchor tag to display the image, and its working fine, the only problem is the image gets cut off. I've been playing around with the css, but can't seem to figure out how to make the image display properly...it seems like the < li is hiding the image behind it somehow...can I place the image in front of the < li to make it display...or am I missing something else? Can someone help me? Thanks. • Windows 7 PC browsers having trouble to open certain sites but not others

  Hi, My Win7 PC these days acting very weird: Examples: It can not open bing.com, alexa.com, msdn.microsoft.com (blank page or page can not be found); It can open zdnet.com but lost all CSS layouts and pictures; It can open stackoverflow and Google no problem; I tried all three browsers (IE8, Chrome, Firefox 3.6) same thing. I didn't change anything on this PC in days. This PC does have Anti-Virus installed and updated. I'm also pretty sure it's not a network problem, because my other laptops are just fine at the same time. The only thing I can think of is it might be some auto-update stuff underneath happened without my knowledge, but I have no idea where to troubleshoot? Please shed some lights for me? Thanks a lot.

• How to create a template with contact info in Windows Live Mail?

  Is it possible to create a template to use in Windows Live mail which I can load peoples details into from my contact list? I currently send emails to people but I have to manually view them in the address book, then copy there details into an email. What I would like is to open the template, select the email address and everything else is auto completed, such as first name, address etc. These would go in set fields which I set within the template. Is this possible? I am willing to switch to another mail account if needed but I would prefer it to be in Windows Live Mail. Thank you. :)

• Dedicated Mouse and Keyboard on VirtualBox VM

  Currently I am trying to run VirtualBox on my second monitor, with a dedicated mouse and keyboard. However, doing so has not proven easy. There has been times where the mouse works, but not the keyboard, vice versa, or nothing works at all. The biggest problem I am running into is this: When enabling the USB mouse and keyboard from the VM, I get an error: 'USB Device is busy with a previous request.' The only thing that is using second mouse and keyboard, however, is Windows. The other error I have received stated that the VM was unable to create a proxy for the device. Additionally, the VM occasionally will disable the secondary keyboard entirely, requiring me to unplug and replug it into my PC to re-enable it again. Keyboard auto-capture is disabled, and while a solution I was reading online stated to turn off mouse integration, that option is grayed out on my machine.

• Do most "normal" people use metro or desktop in Windows 8

  Just curious since I don't fit the definition of a "normal" computer user nor have my friends or relatives upgraded to Windows 8 yet. Are most people in the "wild" (i.e. the "guy in starbucks" or "your friend who works as an auto tech". not you since you are on SU) using metro apps regularly to the point where the desktop is pointless or are they sticking with the desktop? I've gotten mixed statistics from Google. I'm asking for your personal anecdotal opinion based on what you notice in the wild.

• Patriot-2 RAM on ASUS PK5-E not running at PC2-8500?

  I have a P5K-E Motherboard and recently upgraded to 8GB of RAM (4 2GB sticks of PC2-8500 1066 MHz - Patriot Viper 2). When looking at the RAM with PC Wizard 2010 it's showing the RAM being recognized PC2-6500. I've read elsewhere that this is a common problem and requires manually changing the DRAM Voltage in BIOS to 2.2. I've done this and I'm still getting it recognized as PC2-6500. (I also manually set the FSB speed to 1066MHz instead of the AUTO). Any ideas on how to get this memory working properly? Thanks in advance!

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • Is it Secure to Grant Apache User Ownership of Directories & Files for Wordpress

  I'm currently setting up WordPress on an Ubuntu server 12 everything runs fine but there is an issue when it comes to automatically updating and uploading media via WP as Apache "www-data" user does not have permissions to write to the directories. "user1" has full permission All my directories have permissions of 0755 and files 644 my directories setup is as follows: /home/user1/public_html All WP files and directories are in "public_html" In order to work around the auto updating and uploading media I've granted Apache user ownership to the following directories sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-content -R sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-includes -R sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-admin -R I would like to know security wise how secure this is and if it is not secure what would be the best solution? That will allow me to keep all files and directories owned by user1 and still allow wp to be able to automatically update and uploading media

• IDE framework for a dynamic language?

  Let's say I have a super-wonderful new programming language, and I want there to be an IDE for it. What IDE platform/framework could I use to get this done efficiently? I mean things like: Collection of files in a project, searching them, tabbed/split editors etc. — the basics. Syntax highlighting and auto-indent/reformatting. Providing the user interface for code completion — hit tab, get a list (I'll have to implement the necessary partial evaluation myself (it's a dynamic language)). This is the feature I'm most wishing for. Built-in parser framework which is good at recovering from the sort of syntax errors occurring in code that is in the middle of being edited would be helpful. In-editor annotation of syntax/runtime error locations fed back from the language runtime. REPL (interactive evaluator) interaction with the same completion as in the editor. This system should be Linux/Mac/Windows cross-platform (in that priority order). Being implemented in Java (or rather, accepting language plugins written in Java) is possibly useful, but anything else is worth a try too.

I would like to use auto tuning on our windows xp machine so I don't need to guess what my buffers sizes should be. Is there a way to install either a microsoft or 3rd party tcp autotuner on windows xp?

• Vim: How to install plugin for a particular filetype?

  Yesterday I came across jedi-vim plugin which provides auto-completion for python. I installed the plugin using pathogen by placing it in bundle directory and it is working fine. Now, as I have mentioned that this plugin is only for filetype: python so I want to load it only when I open files with .py extensions and not when I open other files like .java, .perl, .sh. So, how can this be achieved. I am a vim beginner/noob but I googled before asking and found that this can be achieved using vim ftplugin but I have no idea whatsoever where to place which file.

• How can one convert a Word form to a PDF form while preserving fields?

  I have a Word source document which I'm using to create a PDF form. The first go-round, everything is fine because I can let Acrobat Pro auto-create all the fields. That feature is actually pretty awesome. However, after spending a bunch of time adjusting field sizes and alignments and formats and so on, I want to edit the source document, and now I'm faced with the prospect of doing all that over again. Isn't there some way to add the fields in the source document using the Developer ribbon and have those fields be preserved in the conversion to PDF? If not, what other ways are there to avoid this kind of redundant effort?

• Font advance calculation problem on Blackberry OS 5.0

  I am currently working on my own implementation of a tab bar for a BlackBerry app, where each tab bar has a title that is right aligned (i.e. the last character in each should be the same distance from the right hand side of the screen). To work out where to draw the text I am using the following calculation: screen width - advance of title - indent. The font I am using is 'BBAlpha Sans' (height 28). Using BlackBerry OS 4.6 everything seems to be calculated properly and the text is aligned when I move between tabs, however I am finding that when I use OS 5.0 it doesn't calculate the advance properly and as a result the alignment is off by maybe 5 pixels or so. With the default font (also BBAlpha Sans, but height 24 - for OS 5.0 at least) it works fine in both versions.. but I don't necessarily always want to use the default font/size, so any ideas what could be going wrong?   I'm using TinyMCE & jQuery and am having a problem moving TinyMCE's external toolbar to another location in the DOM. To further complicate things, there are multiple TinyMCE instances on the page. I only want the toolbar for the one that's currently being edited. Has anyone ever had success trying to do something like this? EDIT It's a Monday alright... it couldn't find the external toolbar because I was using children() instead of fetch(). There's still an issue in that: 1) Moving it is incredibly slow and 2) Once it moves, TinyMCE breaks. EDIT 2 A bit more clarification: The modal is draggable, thus making any purely-CSS workarounds a bit awkward...

• Set custom mount point and mount options for USB stick

  Hello, I have an USB stick which contains private stuff like the SSH key. I want to mount this stick to my own home directory with 0700 permissions. Currently I do this with this line in /etc/fstab: LABEL=KAYSTICK /home/k/.kaystick auto rw,user,noauto,umask=077,fmask=177 0 0 This works great but there is one minor problem: In Nautilus (The Gnome file manager) the mount point ".kaystick" is displayed. I guess Nautilus simply scans the /etc/fstab file and displays everything it finds there. This mount point is pretty useless because it can't be clicked when the device is not present and it can't be clicked when the device is present (Because then it is already mounted). I know this is a really minor problem because I could simply ignore it but I'm a perfectionist and so I want to get rid of this useless mount point in Nautilus. Is there another way to customize the mount point and mount options for a specific USB device? Maybe it can be configured in udev? If yes, how?

• Is there any Mac Pro hardware parts that can ONLY be purchased thru Apple?

  I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about any hardware parts that I should include in a brand new Mac Pro purchase, instead of trying to hunt it down on 3rd party vendors (or whitelist vendors / hardware suppliers). The main components I'm interested for "upgradeability" are: Processors (If starting with Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core "Westmere"); RAM (If starting with the least possible, which seems to be 6 x 1GB); Video Cards (If starting with one ATI Radeon HD 5770, can a 2nd one be purchased elsewhere?) Hard-Drives (Since these are mounted in specialized trays [if I'm not mistaking], are they also sold elsewhere? And can they be bought as SSDs?) Power Supply (Do I need to be concerned about this at all, or does it auto-adjust depending on the new component upgrades?) I just want to be sure by choosing a Mac Pro with lower component specifications that I can in fact purchase upgrade parts cheaper elsewhere. Thanks!

  i've setup a 4-drive RAID-10 array using mdadm-managed, software-raid on an x86_64 box. it'd up & running and works as expected, cat /proc/mdstat md127 : active raid10 sdc2[2] sdd2[3] sda2[0] sdb2[1] 1951397888 blocks super 1.2 512K chunks 2 far-copies [4/4] [UUUU] bitmap: 9/466 pages [36KB], 2048KB chunk atm the four SATA drives are physically plugged into the motherboard's 1st four SATA ports. i'd like to gather the necessary/complete info for catastrophic recovery. reading starting here, http://neil.brown.name/blog, and the mailing list, i'm not yet completely confident i have it right. i understand 'drive order matters'. is that logical, &/or physical order that matters? if i unplugged the four drives in this array, and plugged them each back into different ports on the motherboard or a pci card, as long as i've changed nothing in software config, will the array correctly auto-re-assemble?

• Android passing an arraylist back to parent activity

  Hi there. I've been searching for a simple example of this with no luck. In my android application I have two activities: 1. The main activity which is launched at startup 2. A second activity which is launched by pressing a button on the main activty. When the second activity is finished (by pressing a button) I want it to send back an ArrayList of type MyObject to the main activity and close itself, which the main activity can then do whatever with it. How would I go about achieving this? I have been trying a few things but it is crashing my application when I start the second activity. When the user presses button to launch second activity: Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, secondactivity.class); startActivityForResult(i, 1); The array which is bundled back after pressing a button on the second activity: Intent intent= getIntent(); Bundle b = new Bundle(); b.putParcelableArrayList("myarraylist", mylist); intent.putExtras(b); setResult(RESULT_OK, intent); finish(); And finally a listener on the main activity (although I'm not sure of 100% when this code launches...) protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data); if(resultCode==RESULT_OK && requestCode==1){ Bundle extras = data.getExtras(); final ArrayList<MyObject> mylist = extras.getParcelableArrayList("myarraylist"); Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, mylist.get(0).getName(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } } Any ideas where I am going wrong? • Syntax error beyond end of program

  I am experimenting with writing a toy compiler in ocaml. Currently, I am trying to implement the offside rule for my lexer. However, I am having some trouble with the ocaml syntax (the compiler errors are extremely un-informative). The code below (33 lines of it) causes an error on line 34, beyond the end of the source code.
