• Too early to apply for post-graduation jobs?

  I graduate in May 2012. I'm on an internship with one company right now that will probably make me an offer in August, but I will only have a couple weeks to take or leave it. I'm not sure whether I'll want to accept it- it will depend on the specifics. So I plan to apply for other jobs to see if I can get another offer, but would it be too early to be applying over the next few weeks when I wouldn't start until next May at least? I hate to turn down an offer having nothing else lined up. I'm a software engineer at one large software company and I would apply for jobs at other large software companies. I assume a smaller company would work on a much shorter hiring schedule, but maybe large companies wouldn't mind hiring 8-9 months in advance? I also hate to start applying any earlier than I have to- I know I'll only have more experience and be more employable with time.

• Rails version not shown post installation

  Hi all, I had installed rubygems 1.8 and further on I had installed the rails 2.0.2 gem. When I tried to view the rails version installed through the command rails -v It didn't work.. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• How do I change pages registering as 404 to 200

  I have this problem. After relaunching my site: http://www.kgstiles.com, traffic dropped immensely(about 60%). After troubleshooting for a week and a half - losing thousands of dollars off of lost traffic in the process, I found that Google was getting a 404 error at the end of many of my 301 redirects(so it wouldn't index the new pages). Most of of the pages, though, would register in my browser. They registered as a 404 error in Google's index as well as a 404checker. So my first question is: could this be what's causing my loss of traffic? and second: how do I fix it? I'm desperate!   When accessing an Exchange 2003 server via IMAP, emails that were sent as text/plain (and ones that had no MIME encoding specified at all) get automatically converted to multipart/alternative with the original text/plain body and a text/html body. This is … stupid. It doesn't even bother to specify a monospaced font. • How do you save/export changes made in Firebug?

  Using Firebug to edit CSS, how do I save/export changes made to the CSS? TOOLS: Firefox, Firebug MAJOR UPDATE: If you know of a way to lock the forward/back/refresh on a FireFox tab, please let me know. Otherwise, I've given up on using FireBug/FireDiff as an IDE for CSS, it's nice, but lol... press backspace at the wrong time and ALL your work is gone... funny. So, really like the browser highlighting to CSS/HTML in Firebug. Know any good CSS editors that do this? Really had hope FireBug would work, but for now only see it as being good for ad-hoc inspection and test; meaning using it for what it's made for. UPDATES: @Lèse majesté: Just as an update, "Web Developer add-on" does let you edit CSS, but it does not let you edit/save CSS changes made by Firebug. Meaning you use Firebug to ID and maybe test changes, but it does not let you save the changes from Firebug. Here's a "how to" covering how to use them together: FF + FB + WD @Lèse majesté: Still playing around with FireDiff. It works okay, found one bug already (although I'm just working around it), and there's no "how to" I've been able to find, so I'm just trying every feature and clicking around... (for example, to export a diff you must be over the last item in the list, right click, and select as "Save Diff". The ".diff" is just a text file, no idea why at this point the ext is .diff.

• My Obligatory IPad Post

  I've had my IPad for about a week now. So I thought I'd write some thoughts down based on my initial experiences. Here are my initial take-aways: 1 - Netflix OnDemand - I'm a movie junkie. I'm now more apt to just start a movie as background sound for my workday (I telecommute - so except for the occasional bark from my dog, it's awfully quiet here if I don't have something going). 2 - The Email Client is really nice and I'm as fast or faster typing when I have the wireless keyboard engaged. Even with onscreen keyboard - I'm already close to 75% of desktop speed 3 - The battery life is incredible - I think this is the first case where a mobile device actually under-promised on battery 4 - It totally has killed the notion of using a normal PC for my wife and mother-in-law - neither of which had wanted an iPhone/iPod Touch or really any Apple device until they got to play with my iPad. The concept of - instant on, easy to hold and touch-based navigation has them hooked. Heck, it has me hooked. My ultimate goal is to be able to have it at least replace the need to take my netbook with me on the road. I haven't had a chance to complete my testing on that front yet - between work, my wife traveling (for a change) and now my wife home sick - I haven't had time to just play with it. • Framework for Everything - Where to begin? [Longer post]

  Back story of this question, feel free to skip down for the specific question Hello, I've been very interested in the idea of abstract programming the last few years. I've made about 30 attempts at creating a piece of software that is capable of almost anything you throw at it. I've undertook some attempts at this that have taken upwards of a year, while getting close, never releasing it beyond my compiler. This has been something I've always tried wrapping my head around, and something is always missing. With the title, I'm sure you're assuming, "Yes of course you noob! You can't account for everything!" To which I have to reply, "Why not?" To give you some background into what I'm talking about, this all started with doing maybe a shade of gray hat SEO software. I found myself constantly having to create similar, but slightly different sets of code. I've gone through as many iterations of way to communicate on http as the universe has particles. "How many times am I going to have to write this multi-threaded class?" is something I found myself asking a lot. Sure, I could create a class library, and just work with that, but I always felt I could optimize what I had, which often was a large undertaking and typically involved frequent use of the CRTL+A keyboard shortcut, mixed with the delete button. It dawned on me that it was time to invest in a plugin system. This would allow me to simply add snippets of code. as time went on, and I could subversion stuff out, and distribute small chunks of code, rather than something that encompasses only a specific function or design. This comes with its own complexity, of course, and by the time I had finished the software scope for this addition, it hit me that I would want to add to everything in the software, not just a new http method, or automation code for a specific website. Great, we're getting more abstract. However, the software that I have in my mind comes down to a quite a few questions regarding its execution. I have to have some parameters to what I am going to do. After writing what the perfect software would do in my mind, I came up with this as a list of requirements: Should be able to use networking A "Macro" or "Expression system" which would allow people to do something like : =First(=ParseToList(=GetUrl("http://www.google.com?q=helloworld!"), Template.Google)) Multithreaded Able to add UI elements through some type of XML -- People can make their own addons etc. Can use third party API through the plugins, such as Microsoft CRM, Exchange, etc. This would allow the software to essentially be used for everything. Really, any task you wish to automate, in a simple way. Making the UI was as also extremely hard. How do you do all of this? Its very difficult. So my question: With so many attempts at this, I'm out of ideas how to successfully complete this. I have a very specific idea in my mind, but I keep failing to execute it. I'm a self taught programmer. I've been doing it for years, and work professionally in it, but I've never encountered something that would be as complex and in-depth as a system which essentially does everything. Where would you start? What are the best practices for design? How can I avoid constantly having to go back and optimize my software. What can I do to generalize this and draw everything out to completion. These are things I struggle with. P.s., I'm using c# as my main language. I feel like in this example, I might be hitting the outer limit of the language, although, I don't know if that is the case, or if I'm just a bad programmer. Thanks for your time.

• In 2011, what are the reasons to stick with plain text mails?

  People entering college today have never known a world without an Internet. HTML was invented 1980, that's more than thirty years ago or 1.5 generations. But plain text mails are still common despite all their problems: Encoding issues Wrapped code segments No links No way to use the "a picture says more than a thousand words" lore Most of the security risks are now handled by the underlying browser engine and smart settings like: Don't allow JavaScript in mails Don't execute attachments Don't download external resources (like web bugs) On top of that, only very few people still read mail only in command line tools like Mutt. Knowing Mutt myself, I'm pretty sure you can configure it to display HTML mail with, say, w3m. On top of that, most HTML mail capable clients send two versions of the mail (pure text with an HTML attachment). I'm not sure if there are any people left on the planet which still use a 56kbit modem to access their mail accounts. So what reasons are left to stick with plain text mails in 2011?

• Question about metacity issue from previous post

  Yesterday I had an issue with my 12.04 - 12.04 Does anyone know how to fix this? all of a sudden - my Terminal shortcut doesnt work and windows only appear in top left corner and some configuration causing an issue with metacity making it crash - I was walked through the problem, and found out that by creating another user account and logging onto it - the problem wasn't present anymore on that account but still was present on my old account. So my question is - was the problem just something in my old Home folder? - also - can most issues that occur like this be solved by making a new account and backing up the "Home" folder?

• javascript doesn't seem to be able to post form data (nginx server w/ php-fpm)

  So the situation is like so: I have a nginx server with php-fpm installed. All is well and the site scripts and all work perfectly. I am able to use html to POST form data and it works just fine. However, There seems to be be some correlation between javascript, the POST protocol and nothing happening. I cant seem to determine the issue. Example: I have a user login widget that uses javascript on submit the fields and POST the data to a backend auth script which returns a server message that then populates the login box saying something like "Login Successful" followed by reloading the page to properly enable content. Problem is, nothing happens when you hit submit. I do know the setup works because i had it working on apache before migrating. Also if it makes any difference, the server is a Amazon EC2 instance using the Amazon AMI. • Lotus Notes 8.0.2 - how to stop all mail showing in customized view

  I am using Lotus Notes 8.0.2 at work and unfortunately the admin restricted changing default folders design. Only little changes are possible (e.g. change columns order) and even them are resetted each time I restart the client. I've created a new view with my desired column order, changed sorting etc. I have only one problem - even though I changed the "view" preference to show messages from the inbox folder only, I keep seeing all mail, regardless of the folder they are placed into. I'm not a Lotus expert and don't really know how to code. Yet, I am surprised as I see in a "simple view" this: uses '(ChangeMeetingType), ...' form AND In folder 'Inbox' And in Formula view only this: SELECT ((Form = "(ChangeMeetingType)") | (Form = "(Return Receipt)") | (Form = "Return Receipt") | (Form = "(ReturnNonReceipt)") | (Form = "ReturnNonReceipt") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "MemoEA") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "To Do") | (Form = "Task") | (Form = "_Document Memo") | (Form = "$DocMemo") | (Form = "Word. • What are some good ways for an intermediate programmer to build skills?

  Preface: I work mostly in Python, and Web Dev languages (HTML, CSS, Javascript and Jquery, PHP) I'm proficient at coding but I want to get better. In larger more advanced projects my programming skills break down. The more code there is the more trouble I have fitting all the pieces together. I understand syntax well, and I can catch and correct errors fairly easier. But the more advanced it gets the more I struggle. I believe I have a good understand of the basic and nuts and bolts of programming and I understand what's going on, but when it comes to larger projects, especially ones with heavy math involved my confidence flags and I start making mistakes. It's not that I can't do it, I'm just not used to doing it. Does anyone have any advice for someone who knows programming, but wants to get better? The only tutorials I can really find are beginner basic type stuff. Basically what I'm saying is I want to be confident when I'm tackling advanced projects, but I can't because I have little experience dealing with difficult situations.

• How to create repeatable table with unique ID's using jQuery

  I need to create a table structure that can be "copied" and populated with a new set of data. However, each table must have unique IDs for functions that must access them later. For example: <table class="main"> <thead><tr><th class="header"></th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr class="row"><td class="col0"></td><td class="col1"></td></tr> </tbody> </table> My current thought is to use jQuery to load the table from a seperate html file into a variable. Using this saved table I could then create a function that copies it, traverses the table to add an ID to each section where information will need to be appended from a seperate data source, and return this new table. I am new to jQuery and feel like I may be missing an easier/better way to accomplish this. Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. How did the hacker even manage to send a GET request to my server such that "http://www.google.com" shows up in the log while my server is simply an API that works on relative URLs such as "/api/login". And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!

  I am building a video server application that has multiple projects in Visual Studio. One project, the video server project, needs to call a shell script to generate documentation. This works fine when you build the video server project, because the script is simply cd "$(SolutionDir)" start documentationgenerator However, there is also an SDK project that, when built, also builds the video server project. However, when it does this, it does not know where the shell script is, since it tries to use the SDK Project's Solution Directory. SDK Project Video Server Project shell script So the question is: how do I make the SDK Project find the Video Server Project? I checked the MSBuild properties and there are no properties that seem to deal with 'nested' projects.

  Hello i am finally getting to grips with CSS after about 4 years of picking it up as i go. This problem though has had me stumped for a few hours now so ive gave up and decided to ask for some help and learn from it that way. All the smilies in my site have the img border that is for comment images. examples here- http://onlinebanter.com/node/5334 Ive already removed the border with border:none at other places in my website but i cant seem to change this. • Rowspan not using top row

  I don't understand why my column won't span to the top and bottom rows I created. It is supposed to look like the "Today" column is taller on the top and bottom then the other columns. I tried accomplishing this by adding rows above and below it and then using rowspan. For some reason, it only works on the bottom row. It's a lot of code, and I wasn't sure what I should cut without deforming it all or adding a new variable (it needs a fluid height).   So I have this code and I need it to only redirect when the correct password is added. Only problem is that I dont know what to add that will make it only redirect if the password is "hello" I understand that using "view-source" would reveal the password, I don't mind that, its the way I want it. I basically just need to know what to add and where to add it. Sooo: Redirects if "hello" is typed into password field. • Mobile (Portable) Website

  I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is html and css only (no db), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives; host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about domain name)? have a portable XAMPP version on a USB (again, domain name)? possible fail-over site/location? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Update Presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.
