  • Reference table values in a war against magic numbers

    This question bugged me for years now and can't seem to find good solution still. I working in PHP and Java but it sounds like this maybe language-agnostic :) Say we have a standard status reference table that holds status ids for some kind of entity. Further let's assume the table will have just 5 values, and will remain like this for a long time, maybe edited occasionally with addition of a new status. When you fetch a row and need to see what status it is you have 2 options(as I see it at least) - put it straight ID values(magic numbers that is) or use a named constant. Latter seem much cleaner, the question though is where those named constants should leave? In a model class? In a class that uses this particular constant? Somewhere else?

  • Rails object inheritence with belongs_to

    I have a simple has_many/belongs_to relationship between Report and Chart. The issue I'm having is that my Chart model is a parent that has children. So in my Report model I have class Report < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :charts end And my Chart model is a parent, where Pie, Line, Bar all inherit from Chart. I'm not sure where the belongs_to :report belongs within the chart model, or children of chart model. I get errors when I attempt to access chart.report because the object is of type "Class" undefined local variable or method `report' for #< Class:0x104974b90 The Chart model uses STI so its pulling say.. 'Pie' from the chart_type column in the charts table.. what am I missing?

  • What is the most idiomatic way to emulating Perl's Test::More::done_testing?

    I have to build unit tests for in environment with a very old version of Test::More (perl5.8 with $Test::More::VERSION being '0.80') which predates the addition of done_testing(). Upgrading to newer Test::More is out of the question for practical reasons. And I am trying to avoid using no_tests - it's generally a bad idea not catching when your unit test exits prematurely - say due to some logic not executing when you expected it to. What is the most idiomatic way of running a configurable amount of tests, assuming no no_tests or done_testing() is used? Details: My unit tests usually take the form of: use Test::More; my @test_set = ( [ "Test #1", $param1, $param2, ... ] ,[ "Test #1", $param1, $param2, ... ] # ,... ); foreach my $test (@test_set) { run_test($test); } sub run_test { # $expected_tests += count_tests($test); ok(test1($test)) || diag("Test1 failed"); # ... } The standard approach of use Test::More tests => 23; or BEGIN {plan tests => 23} does not work since both are obviously executed before @tests is known. I'm trying to join some tables together in MySQL, but I seem to get an error saying: #1066 - Not unique table/alias: 'calendar_jobs' I really want it to select everything from the cal_events, the 2 user bits and just the destination col from the jobs table, but become "null" if there arn't any job. A right join seemed to fit the bill but doesn't work! Can anyone help!?   • Psycopg2 doesn't like table names that start with a lower case letter

    I am running ActiveState's ActivePython 2.6.5.12 and PostgreSQL 9.0 Beta 1 under Windows XP. If I create a table with an upper case first letter (i.e. Books), psycopg2 returns the "Programming Error: relation "books" does not exist" error message when I run the select statement: execute("SELECT * FROM Books"). The same error is returned if I run: execute("SELECT * FROM books"). However, if I change the table to a lower case first name (i.e. books), then either of the above statements works. Are tables name supposed to have a lower case first name? Is this a setting or a feature or a bug? Am I missing something obvious?

    I have an object hierarchy that is as follows. Party inherited by Organization and Person Organization inherited by Customer, Vendor Person inherited by Contact In the database I have the following tables Party, Customer, Vendor, Contact. All of them have a corresponding row in Party table. Contact belongs to either Vendor or Customer. I have a field on the Contact table for org_party_id. However, since the organization can be either a Customer or Vendor I need to be able to look at different tables. Is there a way to map this in hibernate? Or, a better way to manage it in DB/ hibernate?

    I have a table with slanted text in the header row, the only problem is that the text still makes the width of the columns way to large. Is there any way to squish together the table columns so that they are about the width of the select boxes? Or is there a way to place the text there without it in the header and maybe just use a <div> or <p>?     What I want to realize is the following: In a JSP x I have a 3 dropdownlists and a button called edit when user click this button a table dynamically should be displayed. Now this table is modified correponding the values in those 3 dropdownlists. So it can be 3 cols or 4 cols or even 6 cols, it depends on the selected values. So what I tried is to use the servlet to getParameter doing the if clause construct the html and then forward the response. Have you any the suggestion of the structure that I can use in JSP? I understand the "most stupid" way to do it naming tbColors three times in the FROM section, using a different alias for each column to replace. How would a non-stupid way look?

I want to be able to long press anywhere on a the table row to be able to get some options to delete or edit etc. Is this possible? Remember I need to do all this without setting any XML as its dynamically built. Apparently I am getting an issue with the first two statements but I can't seem to nail down what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Amy D.
