  • why do you write tests and what is a unit test and how does it differ other types of testing ?

    - by dfafa
    im curious as to know, why tests are written? why would bother writing it ? why not just compile and run the code or view it in your browser, click around and test out stuff. i mean i can understand, a crawler that checks your web app's functions....but why is tests written, maintained and treated as important as the main feature codes ? is it crucial to always write and use tests ?

  • 'goto' usage

    - by Landon
    I've long been under the impression that 'goto' should never be used if possible. While perusing libavcodec (which is written in C) the other day, I noticed multiple uses of it. Is it ever advantageous to use 'goto' in a language that supports loops and functions? If so, why?

  • What does (void**) mean in C?

    - by numerical25
    I would look this up, but honestly I wouldn't know where to start because I don't know what it is called. I've seen variables passed to functions like this: myFunction((void**)&variable); Which confuses the heck out of me cause all of those look familiar to me; I've just never seen them put together like that before. What does it mean? I am a newb so the less jargon, the better, thanks!

  • C++ choose function by return type.

    - by anon
    I realize standard C++ only picks functions by argument type, not return type. I.e I can do something like: void func(int); void func(double); but not double func(); int func(); Where in the former, it's clear, in the latter, it's ambigious. Are there any extensions that lets me tell C++ to pick which function to use also by return type? Thanks!

  • NHibernate and MySql Keywords

    - by jalchr
    Why Nibernate HQL can not handle the following query: from Deal D where (D.ApprovalDate + INTERVAL 1 Year) < current_timestamp() < (D.RenewalDate + INTERVAL -1 Year) knowing that INTERVAL and YEAR are keywords in MySQL, so this is kind of mixing Sql within Hql (unless Hql can handle date functions like so and I don't know) . The dialect is MySQLDialect Its perfectly valid to execute this query SELECT '2005-01-01' + INTERVAL 1 Year;

  • In jQuery, is there any way to only bind a click once?

    - by Chris Henry
    I have an ajax app that will run functions on every interaction. I'd like to be able to run my setup function each time so all my setup code for that function remains encapsulated. However, binding elements more than once means that the handler will run more than once, which is obviously undesirable. Is there an elegant way in jQuery to call bind on an element more than once without the handler being called more than once?

  • Is there any difference between var name = function() {} & function name() {} in Javascript?

    - by Fletcher Moore
    Suppose we are inside a function and not in the global namespace. function someGlobalFunction() { var utilFunction1 = function() { } function utilFunction2 () { } utilFunction1(); utilFunction2(); } Are these synonymous? And do these functions completely cease to exist when someGlobalFunction returns? Should I prefer one or the other for readability or some other reason?

  • getJSON and variable scope in javascript

    - by nillls
    Hi! In order to make function calls to our back-end php code we've implemented something called an ActionProxy like this: function ActionProxy(action, input, callback){ $.post("ActionProxy.php?method="+action, { data: input}, function(data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest){ //return data.ResponseWhatever } }); The problem we're having is that using data outside the ActionProxy is impossible due to variable scope limitations (we assume), setting var res = data.ResponseWhatever or return data.ResponseWhatever is pretty futile. How would one handle these responses most appropriately so that functions calling the actionproxy can access the response values?

  • remove utf-8 figure spaces with php

    - by Jeroen Beerstra
    I have some xml files with figure spaces in it, I need to remove those with php. The utf-8 code for these is e2 80 a9. If I'm not mistaken php does not seem to like 6 byte utf-8 chars, so far at least I'm unable to find a way to delete the figure spaces with functions like preg_replace. Anybody any tips or even better a solution to this problem?

  • How to call Java method from C++

    - by fhucho
    Hi, I am using JNI to call my C++ function from Java. One of the C++ function's arguments is jobject thiz (as far as I know, all JNI native functions have this argument). The function takes quite long to complete and I want to report progress back to the jobject thiz Java object, so that I can show the progress to the user. How can I call jobject's methods from C++?

  • Testcase with multitouch on Android?

    - by makke
    The TouchUtils class in the android documentation has functions like drag() [http://developer.android.com/intl/de/reference/android/test/TouchUtils.html#drag(android.test.InstrumentationTestCase,%20float,%20float,%20float,%20float,%20int)], but they do not support multi touch gestures, like a two finger swipe. Looking at the MotionEvent.obtain() methods, there does not seem to be any way of invoking a "virtual" multi touch event from a testcase. Anyone has got it working?

  • How could one emulate namespace in C?

    - by skydoor
    In C++ one might use namespace to keep independent groups working in the same code base from inadvertently creating functions with the same name and thus creating a conflict. My question is, before the idea of namespace comes out, how might one emulate namespace in C.

  • viewing files in python?

    - by Galilsnap
    I am creating a sort of "Command line" in Python. I already added a few functions, such as changing login/password, executing, etc., But is it possible to browse files in the directory that the main file is in with a command/module, or will I have to make the module myself and use the import command? Same thing with changing directories to view, too.

  • Linking and Redirecting between multiple applications running under a single system folder

    - by Gurunandan
    I am running multiple applications with a single Codeigniter system/ folder using the recommended way on the Codeigniter wiki. Each application runs fine and I can link between apps using absolute URLs. Is there some way I can use or extend the URL helper class (functions like anchor(), redirect()... etc.) to generate links to controllers across applications. I would like to avoid absolute URLs Thanks!

  • c++ recursion with arrays

    - by Sam
    I have this project that I'm working on for a class, and I'm not looking for the answer, but maybe just a few tips since I don't feel like I'm using true recursion. The problem involves solving the game of Hi Q or "peg solitaire" where you want the end result to be one peg remaining (it's played with a triangular board and one space is open at the start.) I've represented the board with a simple array, each index being a spot and having a value of 1 if it has a peg, and 0 if it doesn't and also the set of valid moves with a 2 dimensional array that is 36, 3 (each move set contains 3 numbers; the peg you're moving, the peg it hops over, and the destination index.) So my problem is that in my recursive function, I'm using a lot of iteration to determine things like which space is open (or has a value of 0) and which move to use based on which space is open by looping through the arrays. Secondly, I don't understand how you would then backtrack with recursion, in the event that an incorrect move was made and you wanted to take that move back in order to choose a different one. This is what I have so far; the "a" array represents the board, the "b" array represents the moves, and the "c" array was my idea of a reminder as to which moves I used already. The functions used are helper functions that basically just loop through the arrays to find an empty space and corresponding move. : void solveGame(int a[15], int b[36][3], int c[15][3]){ int empSpace; int moveIndex; int count = 0; if(pegCount(a) < 2){ return; } else{ empSpace = findEmpty(a); moveIndex = chooseMove( a, b, empSpace); a[b[moveIndex][0]] = 0; a[b[moveIndex][1]] = 0; a[b[moveIndex][2]] = 1; c[count][0] = b[moveIndex][0]; c[count][1] = b[moveIndex][1]; c[count][2] = b[moveIndex][2]; solveGame(a,b,c); } }

    - by Randy
    I have an incoming data stream that is being converted with XSLT v1.0 that incoming data does not contain any date information. what i would like, is a nice way of getting the current date to become part of the resulting output stream. I am aware of the 2.0 current-date() type functions - unfortunately those are not available to this environment... any thoughts/hacks/alternatives? tia
