• Can't login via ssh after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04LTS instance on AWS EC2 and I upgraded it to 12.10 following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/QuantalUpgrades. After upgrading I can no longer ssh into my VM. It isn't accepting my ssh key and my password is also rejected. The VM is running, reachable, and SSH is started. The problem seems to be about the authentication part. SSH has been the only way for me to access that VM. • How to merge .rpmnew files in Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)?

  A few .rpmnew files are being created after performing an upgrade of the Fedora OS. The normal procedure for merging .rpmnew files into the original ones is to compare the differences, make the necessary changes to the configuration on the .rpmnew files, and replace the original files with the new ones. However, the files contained in /etc/pam.d are links to files with same the filename appended with -ac, example: password-auth links to password-auth-ac and has password-auth.rpmnew as upgrade. How do I go about merging these files?

• Windows repair console, impossible?

  I found an old Windows XP SP2 in my -trash- cd can and tried it on a 30 GB FAT32 partition. Installation went fine till the copying operation was completed and XP asked for reboot. After that either it starts over again or throws invalid disk. Starting over is an infinite loop the only way I see is to choose the "Repair console" but I'm not used to a DOS box. Can anyone help me through this harmful installation?

• How do I reset/update my BIOS for Optiplex GX280?

  So far this has been a nightmare for me, which has been frustrating me constantly. I am using Dell Optiplex GX280 with Windows XP home edition, which is running a BIOS version A04. Recently, i've rebooted the pc to find out that its not booting. It will get to the Windows boot up screen with the progress bar but only to restart to the same process again, over and over. Frustrated that I am, i've inserted the Windows recovery CD to at least either repair of reinstall the operating system to find out that was not possible. I hit F8 to have the boot options, each of the boot option that I've selected gave me an error saying: "Selected boot device is not available." Right after that, I went to the BIOS setting and did a diagnostic test, which recognized all the Boot devices onboard. Now, I cannot even repair of reinstall Windows XP, because the system is not booting from none of the boot devices. The surprise is when I removed the hard-drive from the computer and loaded it on into another computer successfully; that's right, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. After that I was totally puzzled. I found a few pointers online saying that the BIOS start-up block might be corrupted itself and I might need to flash/update the BIOS. I found the detailed instruction on how to create a Boot up disk by downloading the BIOS firmware from the manufacture's website. I did exactly as instructed below: Download the latest version or your choose version of BIOS file for your computer or motherboard from the manufacturer’s support site. Rename the downloaded file to AMIBOOT.ROM. Copy the file to a floppy disk. Insert the floppy disk to the floppy drive. Turn on the system. After I did that and powered on the PC to boot from the floppy drive, it gave me this error message: "Non-System Disk or Disk Error. Replace and Strike any key when ready." I did all that, and I kept on pressing [Ctrl]+[Home] to force it, but it did not did any satisfying result. Desperate as I am, my next attempt is to try the instruction below. Since I want to be ready, in the event it does not work, do you have any solution that you can provide? Please keep in mind that I cannot boot from any of the devices at this moment. My only hope now is to come on with a solution that will work through the Floppy drive, since that's the only drive that affected. Thank you very much for your advice and support in advance. To create a Windows startup disk, insert a floppy disk into the drive of a similarly configured, working Windows XP system, launch My Computer, right-click the floppy disk icon, and select the Format command from the context menu. When you see the Format dialog box, leave all the default settings as they are and click the Start button. Once the format operation is complete, close the Format dialog box to return to My Computer, double-click the drive C icon to access the root directory, and copy the following three files to the floppy disk: Boot.ini NTLDR Ntdetect.com

• Debian dependency problems / partially installed

  I tried to install curl support for php 5 on my debian squeeze machine and since I'm having problems. After trying to install curl I got dependency issues which I tried to solve by removing what started the issues. From one thing came another and I'm currently looking at ~29 issues when I try to do an apt-get upgrade. These issues vary from unable to config, dependency and unable to remove errors. I tried apt-get upgrade -f and installing packages using dpkg command. I tried removing using purge and force. I manually removed stuff to try and fix it. I tried running dpkg --configure -a. I've to say I'm still pretty new to linux so I'm out of idea's and cant seem to find an answer online that matches my problems. • Ubuntu Server upgrade over SSH hang

  I was upgrading an Ubuntu server (using the do-release-upgrade) command over SSH (I know it's a bad idea, but it was the only choice; I don't have physical access to the server). It seemed to go fine and was going thru the 'setting up package name' part when it froze on the line Installing new version of config file /etc/mysql/debian-start ... The SSH connection appears to be still active, as pressing the up arrow echoes back ^[[A, and so on. When I log in on another SSH connection I can log in fine, but the ** system needs restart ** message shows up. Is it safe to ^C the release-upgrade command, or try to reboot the server? Should I ^C the upgrade and try it again? Anything else I could try?

• Sticking with Ubuntu 12.04 while heavily using PPA for newest software updates (Apache 2.4, PHP 5.5)

  I was wondering whether is it worthwhile to stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS until 14.04 comes or should I be switching to just the latest Ubuntu server version 13.10. My server needs are not enterprise heavy and previous thought to keep with LTS was simply to gain the security updates without having to upgrade the servers every couple months. But as we are moving forward with our software development, I have found that alot of the default version of software with 12.04 is way out of the date forcing me to up date via PPA or from source instead of from default apt-get. ie PHP 5.3 is on 12.04, and I'd like to get it to 5.5. Is it worthwhile to simply move to 13.10 in that situation? With the idea to move to 14.04 when it comes?

• SSIS- Sharepoint list data transfer issue

  Hi , We are trying to transfer data from oracle database (about 60,0000) records only to a sharepoint list using SSIS. But we are getting following error when records reaches around 19000 . The attempt to add a row to the Data Flow task buffer failed with error code 0xC0047020 and System.ServiceModel.ProtocolException: The remote server returned an unexpected response: (400) Bad Request. Earlier we thought if could because of Sharepoint list limit so we tried by reducing two of the columns and then it has went fine. So we left with one of the column of Datatype DT_STR and length 400 in oracle beacuse of which issue might be happening, It is mapped to sharepoint custom list field of multiline type. We also verified if length of field is issue but in oracle DB for all records max length for this column is only 239 so length issue is also ruled out. • I know it is a VLC know issue, but cant find a workaround

  I installed VLC player, because it works better that other video player on HD videos, but know I have an issue all most of my games (All of those using Bink Video, that means all Unreal Engine games, Call of duty, and more). When I load the game, I can hear the videos, the audio is working, so I know the videos is loading, but there is no image on the screen! Once I read that it was a known VLC issue with DivX or something like that, cant remember, does anyone, know a way to fix it? Thanks in advance

• Spotlight Infinite Indexing issue (external data drive)

  This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will. I have tried several things - here is a list: - make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue - run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred - wipe out all ACLs on entire drive - set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777 - remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive - transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems) - use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it. In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again. So there it is. It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5. Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before.   Hi All, I am trying to set up a Approval workflow when item created and item updated event on a list and then update the approval status as workflow complete. Now when I create a new Item the workflow kicks off as expected. When I edit the same item and approve the item new workflow get started as the item get edit. It seems to be workflow falls in loop if I se an Approval workflow on new item created and Item Edit events. I Google for it and I found that Microsoft has come up with hotfix to overcome this issue. I have installed it on my machine but still the problem persist. Is there are any prerequisites needed for this ? or any other service pack or specific version of service pack needs be installed on machine to make this hotfix running. • Developer workload management software: recommendations?

  In my place, we use two issue tracking tools, one for production bugs, and another for issues on projects in development. These tools are good for managers. However, at an individual level, other work can also arrive through desk visits, email, or the phone, and those allocating the work aren't always interested in issue tracking systems. I've recently rolled off an 18-month project where I got into a cycle of overtime, and I found that I didn't always have good visibility of all work assigned to me. As a result, I was always very busy, and felt constantly laden down with work, but didn't have the clear data to show my manager (or, ironically, the time to stop and gather the information!). A handwritten list, updated at the end of each day, is a good start, but can anyone recommend better tools to help me get a clear view of my own workload? Ideally, I'm thinking of software tools for developers, which could incorporate estimates, but all suggestions welcome. Thanks, Paddy

  While creating self contained elements with Jquery html() the following issue happens: $('#someId').html('<li><input type="checkbox" /></li>') will create <li><input type="checkbox"></li> It closes correctly the <li> tag but not the <input> It seems its an issue from innerHtml which is used in the html() function.   I've got an VPS in germany running Debian X64. I have very strange issue. I have ISPConfig CP installed using proftpd and I can not connect to FTP by any means. Few hours ago I've had installed DirectAdmin on CentOS same VPS and same issue. The apache is not configured to redirect and application was working fine on port 80 only. I have no knowledge how the internal network works as i am working remotely. The SSL error logs show: [Tue Oct 02 22:40:32 2012] [error] Hostname linemnt01.tap.pt provided via SNI and hostname moclm.tap.pt provided via HTTP are different I thought may be the hostname has some issue and have changed the hostname of the server from "linemnt01.tap.pt" to "moclm.tap.pt" but the issue is still there. I am getting the following error on browser: Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. i have /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost moclm.tap.pt moclm and openssl returns: openssl verify -CAfile cert-CA.cer moclm.cer moclm.tap.pt.cer: OK I have been trying to troubleshoot the issue but no luck. • File download speed issue over a dedicated fibre link

  My ISP has installed a fibre based dedicated internet connection at the place where I work. In the beginning the connection terminated at one of the ISP's core routers. It resulted in a strange issue. Eventhough the assigned speed was 5mbps, when tests were done by downloading large files over http and ftp from multiple locations, the speed never went above 2mbps. But bittorrent downloads reached 5mbps. Even file download from the ISP servers were fine. So, at the ISP our link was attached directly to their edge router. After this file downloads from high bandwidth servers, like Google and MS, reached the 5 mbps limit. Sometimes the speed would fall down below 2 mbps and suddenly it will go up to the 5 mbps limit ( it keeps on happening during any single file download). But other downloads like ubuntu apt repositories still struggle to go above 2 mbps. The engineers at the ISP have not been able to sort out the issue. After they moved us to their edge router instead of giving us 8 public ip's, they just gave 4 ip's. When we enquired about it, they told us that giving more ip's would result in arp overload at their edge router. But somehow I was able to convince them to give us the 8 ip's which we wanted. But the file download issue has remained. What might be the reason for files from different location getting downloaded with different speeds, that too with heavy fluctuation in speeds? I have downloaded files from same url's from a connection belonging to another smaller ISP, and the speeds were fine and reached full 5 mbps limit.

Note that I'm absolutely sure that I placed in the DIMMs in the correct slots. Might this issue be related to the Voltage of the DIMMs? Any suggestions on how to trouble-shoot this issue? This issue seems to be similar to the one explained at "Inserted disabled" while upgrading Sun Sparc t5120 memory. • Surface (Pro) Soft Keyboard + Hardware Keyboard Issue

  When I got my Surface Pro 2, I loved it, and everything seemed to work flawlessly, until, wait for it, windows updates... The issue that I am having is the following, I primarily use the TC (TypeCover), as the Pro is an out-of-office laptop replacement for me, that I can still use to do whatever I need, but there are times when I will flip the cover, and use the system in tablet mode. The problem is that even when the TC is attached, any text field I click on, causes the OSK (on screen keyboard) to appear, as if I was running the system in tablet mode. As soon as I press a single button on the TC, the OSK is dismissed. When I first got the system, this was NOT the case, and it functioned as it should, where the OSK will only appear if the TC was not present. The biggest problem that I am having is the fact that the OSK causes the windows to be resized. Maximized windows will be shrunk, and stretched to their previous state, however a window that is not maximized will stay in its shrunken state, after the OSK has been dismissed. Below are pictures that show what is happening. Has anyone else experienced this issue? And is there any way to fix it? As you might imagine, having spent a pretty penny on a device like this, it it quite an annoying bug that needs fixing. I have been dealing with this issue for about 3 months now.

• Outbound mail issue during Exchange 2003 migration

  Dear all, I am having an outbound email issue during the Exch 03 migration. Basically, we are migrating Exch03 to new hardware, both servers are Server 03 based. Everything runs smooth while setting up and installing Exch 03 on the new box. Public folders are all replicated. My issues are shown below.... 1) After starting to move users' mailboxes to new Exch 03, they receive some undeliverable mail and bounced back mail from some vendors, then I move few users back to test around, they have no problem at all after moving back to old Exch 03. 2) Another issue is our company has Blackberry users, we don't have BES. Under each user's mailboxes, we have forward rule setup, so that both user inbox and BB can receive email. User who is moved to the new Exch 03 server, they can only send email to the BB user's inbox, mail cannot be forwarded to BB at all, smtp queue stacks up and keep trying until the time is expired. Since not all emails that the users send out from the new Exch have problem, I am not able to narrow down what is the issue here. Can anyone give me some ideas? Could this be MX record / Reversed DNS relate? Or firewall NAT rule setting? Thanks.

• Xen domU mem-set issue

  I'm running into a problem on my xen 4.0.1 server (debian squeeze) My host has 32G of memory, Domain-0 has 2048 M assigned to it. (scaled down with xm mem-set Domain-0 2048) top in Domain-0 confirms this. I created a virtual machine config file (using xen-tools) with the following options: memory = '512' maxmem = '2048' Both host and guest machines are running the standard 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 debian kernel. 'xm create' creates a virtual machine with 512MB of memory as expected. Then 'xm mem-set domU 1024' will not expand the memory to 1024MB running 'xm mem-set domU 400' does set the memory to about 400MB Then 'xm mem-set domU 1024' will expands the memory back to 512MB Based on this, you would say that xm ignores the maxmem and silently sets maxmem to 512, but in the output of xm top the MAXMEM column reads 2G. the MEM column will not go over 512M. The output of xm list tells another story, it shows 1024 when I 'xm mem-set domU 1024'. I've googled myself all away around the internet for this issue and found that most people don't scale back Domain-0. I know I've seen a bugreport about the issue I'm experiencing, but can't find it anymore. Does anyone see what I'm doing wrong here? Hmm.. I just upgraded my kernel to the one provided by debian backports. The issue has gone.
