  • How to reliably keep an SSH tunnel open?

    I use an SSH tunnel from work to go around various idotic firewalls (it's ok with my boss :)). The problem is, after a while the ssh connection usually hangs, and the tunnel is broken. If I could at least monitor the tunnel automatically, I could restart the tunnel when it hangs, but I haven't even figured a way of doing that. Bonus points for the one who can tell me how to prevent my ssh connection from hanging, of course!

    Due to some security problems, My boss has asked me to store all sensitive data in external/removable storages like USB stick or external HDD and this specially includes the MDF/NDF/LDF files of SQL Server 2008 we're running.   • Paid service that will bulk convert HTML and text to PDF?

Is anyone aware of any services that will be able to do bulk conversions of these documents to PDF?   • Recreate/Regenerate vhost config in cpanel for one account

    So my boss as allways was messing with cpanel on our production server (we only have production servers, which is bad enough)... so now all of the accounts is pointing to the default apache page in /usr/local/apache/htdocs instead of /home/useracc/public_html. Is there a way how to tell cpanel/WHM to recreate the vhost configuration of the account from scratch? the account has a database and emails associated with them so before i do anything i don't want to mess anything up with cpanel.

  • Job conditions conflicting with personal principles on software-development - how much is too much?

    Sorry for the incoming wall'o'text (and for my probably bad English) but I just need to get this off somehow. I also accept that this question will be probably closed as subjective and argumentative, but I need to know one thing: "how much BS are programmers supposed to put up with before breaking?" My background I'm 27 years old and have a B.Sc. in Computer engineering with a graduation grade of 1.8 from a university of applied science. I went looking for a job right after graduation. I got three offers right away, with two offers paying vastly more than the last one, but that last one seemed more interesting so I went for that. My situation I've been working for the company now for 17 months now, but it feels like a drag more and more each day. Primarily because the company (which has only 5 other developers but me, and of these I work with 4) turned out to be pretty much the anti-thesis of what I expected (and was taught in university) from a modern software company. I agreed to accept less than half of the usual payment appropriate for my qualification for the first year because I was promised a trainee program. However, the trainee program turned out to be "here you got a computer, there's some links on the stuff we use, and now do what you colleagues tell you". Further, during my whole time there (trainee or not) I haven't been given the grace of even a single code-review - apparently nobody's interested in my work as long as it "just works". I was told in the job interview that "Microsoft technology played a central role in the company" yet I've been slowly eroding my congnitive functions with Flex/Actionscript/Cairngorm ever since I started (despite having applied as a C#/.NET developer). Actually, the company's primary projects are based on Java/XSLT and Flex/Actionscript (with some SAP/ABAP stuff here and there but I'm not involved in that) and they've been working on these before I even applied. Having had no experience either with that particular technology nor the framework nor the field (RIA) nor in developing business scale applications I obviously made several mistakes. However, my boss told me that he let me make those mistakes (which ate at least 2 months of development time on their own) on purpose to provide some "learning experience". Even when I was still a trainee I was already tasked with working on a business-critical application. On my own. Without supervision. Without code-reviews. My boss thinks agile methods are a waste of time/money and deems putting more than one developer on any project not efficient. Documentation is not necessary and each developer should only document what he himself needs for his work. Recently he wanted us to do bug tracking with Excel and Email instead of using an already existing Bugzilla, overriding an unanimous decision made by all developers and testers involved in the process - only after another senior developer had another hour-long private discussion with him he agreed to let us use the bugtracker. Project management is basically not present, there are only a few Excel sheets floating around where the senior developer lists some things (not all, mind you) with a time estimate ranging from days to months, trying to at least somehow organize the whole mess. A development process is also basically not present, each developer just works on his own however he wants. There are not even coding conventions in the company. Testing is done manually with a single tester (sometimes two testers) per project because automated testing wasn't given the least thought when the whole project was started. I guess it's not a big surprise when I say that each developer also has his own share of hundreds of overhours (which are, of course, unpaid). Each developer is tasked with working on his own project(s) which in turn leads to a very extensive knowledge monopolization - if one developer was to have an accident or become ill there would be absolutely no one who could even hope to do his work. Considering that each developer has his own business-critical application to work on, I guess that's a pretty bad situation. I've been trying to change things for the better. I tried to introduce a development process, but my first attempt was pretty much shot down by my boss with "I don't want to discuss agile methods". After that I put together a process that at least resembled how most of the developers were already working and then include stuff like automated (or at least organized) testing, coding conventions, etc. However, this was also shot down because it wasn't "simple" enought to be shown on a business slide (actually, I wasn't even given the 15 minutes I'd have needed to present the process in the meeting). My problem I can't stand working there any longer. Seriously, I consider to resign on monday, which still leaves me with 3 months to work there due to the cancelation period. My primary goal since I started studying computer science was being a good computer scientist, working with modern technologies and adhering to modern and proven principles and methods. However, the company I'm working for seems to make that impossible. Some days I feel as if was living in a perverted real-life version of the Dilbert comics. My question Am I overreacting? Is this the reality each graduate from university has to face? Should I betray my sound principles and just accept these working conditions? Or should I gtfo of there? What's the opinion of other developers on this matter. Would you put up with all that stuff?

  • New version of SQL Server Data Tools is now available

    If you don’t follow the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) blog then you may not know that two days ago an updated version of SSDT was released (and by SSDT I mean the database projects, not the SSIS/SSRS/SSAS stuff) along with a new version of the SSDT Power Tools. This release incorporates a an updated version of the SQL Server Data Tier Application Framework (aka DAC Framework, aka DacFX) which you can read about on Adam Mahood’s blog post SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (September 2012) Available. DacFX is essentially all the gubbins that you need to extract and publish .dacpacs and according to Adam’s post it incorporates a new feature that I think is very interesting indeed: Extract DACPAC with data – Creates a database snapshot file (.dacpac) from a live SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database that contains data from user tables in addition to the database schema. These packages can be published to a new or existing SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database using the SqlPackage.exe Publish action. Data contained in package replaces the existing data in the target database. In short, .dacpacs can now include data as well as schema. I’m very excited about this because one of my long-standing complaints about SSDT (and its many forebears) is that whilst it has great support for declarative development of schema it does not provide anything similar for data – if you want to deploy data from your SSDT projects then you have to write Post-Deployment MERGE scripts. This new feature for .dacpacs does not change that situation yet however it is a very important pre-requisite so I am hoping that a feature to provide declaration of data (in addition to declaration of schema which we have today) is going to light up in SSDT in the not too distant future.   • The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

    The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers.     After learning functional programming in Haskell and F#, the OOP paradigm seems ass-backwards with classes, interfaces, objects. Which aspects of FP can I bring to work that my co-workers can understand? Are any FP styles worth talking to my boss about retraining my team so that we can use them? Possible aspects of FP: Immutability Partial Application and Currying First Class Functions (function pointers / Functional Objects / Strategy Pattern) Lazy Evaluation (and Monads) Pure Functions (no side effects) Expressions (vs. Statements - each line of code produces a value instead of, or in addition to causing side effects) Recursion Pattern Matching Is it a free-for-all where we can do whatever the programming language supports to the limit that language supports it? Or is there a better guideline?

I have a website which is called let's say www.website1.com on different hosting provider(siteground) I have www.website2.com Now,www.website1.com is the old website and the boss wants .. IF someone clicks on www.website1.com/user/content/1, he/she should be redirected to www.website2.com/user/content/1 ,but the url should REMAIN www.website1.com/user/content/1 and the same thing for all the pages.   • Multiple 301 redirect and massive loss of ranking

    I just remade from scratch a website for a client, the client ask me to preverve their ranking by making 301 redirect from the original URL to the new URL. For instance: http://plumber-directory.my-website.com/john-smith-city-1.php became http://directory.my-website.com/plumber/city/john-smith.html So i put the website online for few days until the 301 partially kicks in the google results. Then the client call me back to tell me that his boss want to switch back to the ancients URLs _< So i put a new 301 redirect: http://directory.my-website.com/plumber/city/john-smith.html revert to http://plumber-directory.my-website.com/john-smith-city-1.php Because google had just few days to assimilate the new URLs, it have now the two kinds of URLs in it's own result pages. Also the ranking of the website keeps falling down every day, i suspect google to mistaking those redirects for duplicate content. Is there something i can do to avoid a total loss of rankings?

  • What is the difference between CSDA and CSDP?

    This question is in reference to the IEEE's CSDA and CSDP certifications. I've already taken the CSDA course, which covered all of the knowledge areas in the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). I'm thinking about doing the CSDP certification as well, but I can't find anywhere that tells me how it differs from the CSDA. I know that it's aimed more at professionals rather than recent graduates, and I'd imagine that it covers the same areas as the CSDA, but in greater detail. Unfortunately I can't find much evidence to back that up. This is making it difficult to justify to my boss that he should spend several hundred pounds of the group's training budget on it. So the question is: What does the CSDP offer that the CSDA doesn't?

Anyway, my boss told me I should explore and learn about MVC, Memcache, Design Patterns, how Apache servers work and how to set one up etc. What I want to ask is actually this: What should I learn further? Web Development is a big area and most odds are that I'll never stop learning, but what are the basics I should learn about? What are the fundamentals? I won the “Windows @ Work Contest”  from IT Toolbox and as I was not eligible to get the prize I arranged a 500 US$ donation to Kidsave.org. April 1st was also a very special day in my life, not only it was April Fools days, but it was also when I first received my Microsoft MVP Award for Windows Desktop Experience. I had enough time to celebrate, but my boss went on vacations the day before. Today he came back to the office with a very nice surprise. Yes!   • Developing iOS apps as web developer

    My Boss has sold a few 'iPhone apps' to clients, we are a web development shop. I have explained to him that I do not know the first thing about them, but it's such a powerful buzz-word and we need to meet clients expectations. I do have some experience in C, Java and Python which should help if I need to use objective-C. I have even done a few Android tutorials. These apps will more or less be HTML, in my mind they are not real apps, but faux apps which have the same functionality as the clients' websites. To me a real app is something that uses the phones hardware inputs and outputs, gps, accelerometer, speaker etc. What resources can I use to get up to speed iOS development and how to build apps in html. I have no idea where to begin.

  • Is the term "web portal" obselete?

    Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong place: I've looked at all the programming-related boards and this one seems like the best fit - correct me if I'm wrong. My boss uses the term "portal" for the project I work on all the time. To me, the word makes me think of Yahoo in the late 90s. Does the word "portal" have old-school connotations, or is it just me? Do you think it's ok to use it, and not drag our client's perception of the product down into the middle-ages? Or again, am I just being weird?

    I've got a pathfinding boss enemy that seeks the player using the A* algorithm. It's a pretty complex environment, and I'm doing it in Flash, so the search can get a bit slow when it's searching over long distances. If the player was stationary, I could just search once, but at the moment I'm searching every frame. This takes long enough that my framerate is suffering. What's the usual solution to this? Is there a way to "replan" A* without redoing the entire search? Should I just search a little less often (every half-second or second) and accept that there will be a little inaccuracy in the path?

    I am a starting concept artist who would like to enter the gaming industry. I noticed that some AAA titles show their concept art with no artists signature (only a reference to game the game, such as for Star Wars The Old Republic: 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BioWare, LucasArts). I asked myself a question, what possible harm could my autograph cause on the public concept art if I am not a well known concept artist such as Adam Adamowicz (who did concepts for Skyrim). Why would a prospective boss tells me not to leave my "finger print" on the picture despite, the fact that I am a very talented artist?

  • I feel stuck in the center of Python, How to get past beginner

    I really apologize if this doesn't follow the S.O rules but I need a little help, I personally still classify myself as a beginner in python, Yet I've wrote a very small and VERY SURE impractical program for my boss to use. I know I'm still a beginner because simple things still perplex me but every book I read for beginners honestly just rehashes what I do already know but every 'more advanced' book doesn't really allow me to learn, they depend on example files and I never really understand why they built 'said' function or 'said' class. So onto my question... Is there any recommendations on a book or ANYTHING that pushes me out of this stage, I've used head first and normally they are really good but my issue there is they have me back tracking just to move forward again, It worked in HTML but its confusing in Python, basically I think I need to build a program while following along, Again I like HeadFirst's style but I need something that isn't going to make me have to remember one thing just to forget it... for record, I've checked into some O'Reilly books
