  • Big smart ViewModels, dumb Views, and any model, the best MVVM approach?

    The following code is a refactoring of my previous MVVM approach (Fat Models, skinny ViewModels and dumb Views, the best MVVM approach?) in which I moved the logic and INotifyPropertyChanged implementation from the model back up into the ViewModel. This makes more sense, since as was pointed out, you often you have to use models that you either can't change or don't want to change and so your MVVM approach should be able to work with any model class as it happens to exist. This example still allows you to view the live data from your model in design mode in Visual Studio and Expression Blend which I think is significant since you could have a mock data store that the designer connects to which has e.g. the smallest and largest strings that the UI can possibly encounter so that he can adjust the design based on those extremes. Questions: I'm a bit surprised that I even have to "put a timer" in my ViewModel since it seems like that is a function of INotifyPropertyChanged, it seems redundant, but it was the only way I could get the XAML UI to constantly (once per second) reflect the state of my model. So it would be interesting to hear anyone who may have taken this approach if you encountered any disadvantages down the road, e.g. with threading or performance. The following code will work if you just copy the XAML and code behind into a new WPF project.     Hello, I want to know if there exists a tool to help in reversing a compressed javascript that has obscure variable names. I am not looking for a pretty-printing beautifier, but for a tool that actually know a to change & propagate variable name choices.   • Is there some smart way of customizing ajax message text in jQuery?

    I have tons of ajax components on this booking engine. I need to customize the text inside of the modal for each of the components to suite. I added: $('#loader').bind('ajaxStart', function() { $(this).show().addClass('modalOpen'); }).bind('ajaxComplete', function() { $(this).removeClass('modalOpen').hide() }); Is there some advanced way of changing the text inside of the loading element before I do separate .ajax calls?   • Advice on a DB that can be uploaded to a website by a smart client for collecting survey feedback

    Hello, I'm hoping you can help. I'm looking for a zero config multi-user datbase that my winforms application can easily upload to a webserver folder (together with 1 or 2 classic asp pages) and am looking for some suggestions/recommendations. The idea is that the database will be used to collect feedback entered by people filling in the asp pages. The pages will write to the database using javascript. The database will subsequently be downloaded again for processing once the responses are in. In Summary: It will mostly run in MS Windows environments. I have a modest budget for this and do not mind paying for such a database. No runtime licensing costs. Should be xcopy - Once uploaded to a website folder it should be operational. It should not have a dotnet CLR dependency. It should support a resonable level of concurrent access. Average respondent count would be around 20-30 but one never knows. Should be a reasonable size so that uploads/downloads to and from the site will be reasonably fast. Would appreciate your suggestions/comments Many thanks Abz To clarify - this is a desktop commercial application for feedback management in a vertical market. It uses SQL Server as the backing store. The application currently provides feedback management from email and paper feedback. I now want to add web feedback capability. Getting users to to make their SQL servers accessible to a website is not at option at this time as I am want to make getting up and running as painless as possible. I intend to release a web based implementation of the software in the near future but for now am looking at the above as a pragmatic way to provide web based feedback collection.

    I want to create a .NET CF application for Windows Mobile 5. In this application, I want to load a COM object based on the ProgID (or CLSID). How do I load this COM object in such a way that I can access its methods as if it were just another .NET object? In addition: how can I configure the projects / solutions in Visual Studio in such a way, that when I debug the application, I am sure that the COM object that is loaded is the one that is installed on the device, not one that may be accessible through the debugger? I have tried adding the .ocx file as a Reference, but I get an error, and I am not sure about 'question 2'. I have also tried loading the COM object using Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("my.prog.id") MyObject myObject = (MyObject)Activator.CreateInstance(type) ...but this results in an InvalidCastException on the second line.

    Recently I have deployed some HP server with SSD's behind a SmartArray P410 controller. While not official supported from HP the server work well sofar. Now I like to get wear level info's, error statistics etc from the drive. While the SA P410 supports a passthru of the SMART Command to a single drive in the array the output I was not able to the the interesting things from the drive.   • Folder/File permission transfer between alike file structure

    So my company has recently upgraded to a new SAN but the person who copied all the data over must have done a drag n' drop or basic copy to move everything. Apparently Xcopy is not something he cared to use. So now I am left with the task of duplicating all the permissions over. The structure has changed a bit ( as in more files/folders have been added) but for the most part has been stayed unchanged. I'm looking for suggestions to help automate this process. Can I use XCopy to transfer ONLY permissions to one tree from another? Would i just ignore any folders/permissions that don't line up correctly? Thanks a ton in advance, Tyler

  • Issues connection to Ubuntu via PuTTy

    I'm not sure this is the appropriate stack exchange site to post this question on. If not, please flag this for migration. I am trying to use PuTTy ssh into my ubuntu machine which is wirelessly connected to the same network. I originally ran ifconfig to get my ubuntu machines private network IP address. I then verified that ssh was running, I even ssh'd into my school network and then into the ubuntu machine itself. No problems yet. On my windows 8 machine I ran ipconfig to get my private network IPv4 address. I then pinged my ubunty machines IP and 100% of packets were received. I figured, "OK we are ready to use PuTTy to connect to my Ubuntu Machine". Keep in mind this was my first time using PuTTy. I tried entering the IP of my ubuntu machine in the PuTTy Config GUI but I got a connection timeout. At this moment I don't really know what's going on, SSH is running on port 22 of my Ubuntu machine and I can ping the machine why is it not connecting? (I tried [username]@ip too). So I went on my Ubuntu machine and ran nmap -sP 192.168.0.1/24 and found that my windows machines IP did not show up, the host is down. I'm at a lost in something I am not very familiar with. Would anyone be able to help me or direct me to some resources that would trouble shoot my problem?   • Convert filenames to their checksum before saving to prevent duplicates. Is is a smart thing to do?

    TL;DR:what the title says I am developing some sort of image board in PHP. I was thinking of changing each image's filename to it's checksum prior to saving it. This way, I might be able to prevent duplicates. I know this wouldn't work for two images that are the same but differ in size or level of compression or whatnot, but this method would allow for an early check. What bugs me is that I never saw this method implemented anywhere, so I was wondering if there is a catch to it. Maybe it is just more efficient to keep the original filename and store the hash in DB? Maybe the whole method is just not useful and my question is moot? What do you think? On a side note, I don't really get how hashes are calculated so I was wondering, if my first question checks out, if it would be possible to calculate the likeness that two images are similar by comparing hashes (levenshtein or something of the sort).

  • How to explain to users the advantages of dumb primary key?

    Primary key attractiveness I have a boss(and also users) that wants primary key to be sophisticated/smart/attractive control number(sort of like Social Security number, or credit card number format) I just padded the primary key(in Views) with zeroes to appease their desire to make the control number sophisticated,smart and attractive. But they wanted it as: first 2 digits as client code, then 4 digits as year year, then last 4 digits as transaction number on that client on a given year, then reset the transaction number of client to 1 when next year flows. Each client's transaction starts with 1. e.g. WM20090001, WM20090002, BB2009001, WM20100001, BB20100001 But as I wanted to make things as simple as possible, I forgo embedding their suggested smartness in primary key, I just keep the primary key auto increments regardless of client and year. But to make it not dull-looking(they really are adamant to make the primary key as smart control number), I made the primary key appears to them smart, on view query, I put the client code and four digit year code on front of the eight-zero padded autoincrement key, i.e. WM200900000001. Sort of slug-like information on autoincremented primary key. Keeping primary key autoincrement regardless of any other information, we are able keep other potential side effects problem when they edit a record, for example, if they made a mistake of entering the transaction on WM, then they edit the client code to BB, if we use smart primary key, the primary keys of WM customer will have gaps in their control number. Or worse yet, instead of letting the control numbers have gaps/holes, the user will request that subsequent records of that gap should shift up to that gap and have their subsequent primary keys re-adjust(decremented). How do you deal with these user requests(reasonable or otherwise)? Do you yield to their request? Or just continue using dumb primary key and explain them the repercussions of having a very smart/sophisticated primary key and educate them the significant advantages of having a dumb primary key?     Hi gang, Using OpenSSO as an identity provider, what should I do (i.e. with FedUtil.exe) to configure my .NET relying party so that it will do the STS dance? I've gotten OpenSSO's WS-Trust client samples running, so I think OSSO's in a good state and ready for the next step. I'm at the FedUtil.exe's "Use an existing STS" wall. Where do I get the STS WS-Federation metadata document for OpenSSO?
