I have a table PC that'd I'd like to use as an input device for my main (powerful) desktop. How can I set this up?
My desktop is running win7 64 and the tablet is running vista 32
The Aero Peek feature is incredibly useful for me, but I want it to happen more quickly.
This question (answered by KronoS) tells how to change the delay time before the popups occur when hovering over the open application icons on the taskbar.
However, this registry tweak does not work to speed up the desktop peek functionality when the mouse is moved over the 'desktop' area of the task bar.
Any idea how to speed up this function?
I am getting a new laptop and wish to "move" my desktop installation exactly as I have it on my desktop to my laptop. I imagine that drivers will be an issue, but beyond that, how do I do a clone?
I need to create a multi-monitor setup for my desktop computer but I have no additional monitors with me right now, aside from my laptop. Is it possible to use my laptop screen as an external monitor?
Note that I am not trying to connect a monitor to my laptop, rather, I am trying to connect my laptop screen to a desktop video card (if this is possible).
Hi people,
i recently buy WD Mybook Essential HDD 1 TB. I downloaded and install Smartware software in both my desktop (windows xp) and laptop (Windows 7) but in both case the s/w is not able to detect the external hard disc. It shows desktop/laptop (Whichever is apt) on left hand side of software but not the hard drive on right side. Why so?

I'm trying to mess around with starting up modern UI applications from the desktop and various other wierdness. While I've been digging, I can't seem to work out where exactly the shortcuts to windows modern UI apps are stored.
With my classic desktop applications they are in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. The modern UI stuff dosen't turn up though. Where are the shortcuts to the modern UI apps stored so that the start screen can find them?
i just bought a new hp amd II athlon quad core and everytime i try to move file off my desktop to a hard drive or off my hard drive to my desktop of atleast a 1g or more my computer restarts itself and gives me the blue screen of death can someone please tell me why
HI!
Just been playing around with Rainmeter and I notice that if I want to go look at my desktop and I click on the bottom right square in win7 that minimizes to the desktop, the rainmeter "gadget" gets minimized as well, not letting me read what I want to see. Is there something I can configure to make it stay up? Thanks!
I have a computer on LAN running ssh. I can normally tunnel the GUI application using
ssh computer-name -X program-name
But I wam my full desktop to be running on a remote computer using ssh so that I can just use that computer remotely like a local desktop. For this I think I will need to run KDM (or GDM ) remotely, what configuration do I need to do to make this happen?
I've had the desire to move to Linux for desktop computing for some time, as the OS just suits me, I think, better than Windows. I've not yet moved from Windows for a few reasons:
It's used in my workplace.
I have an extensive application base that does whatever I need (and they're all on a portable hdd)
I am familiar developing software on Windows.
So, what about Linux keeps you from moving to it, or what does your current desktop OS offer that Linux does not?
Problem:
The desktop and documents folder appear with normal icons.
Attempted Solutions:
Restoring desktop.ini
Clearing the icon cache
Rebooting
Restoring the documents icon to default (via Control Panel)
I'm running Windows 7 on an iMac using Bootcamp. At the native resolution of 1290x1200, the desktop fills the entire screen, but when I run games at a lower resolution or reduce the suze of the desktop the visible area is reduced and a large black border surrounds the display.
I want to run 1024x768 full screen, not letterboxed. Is there a way to do this? I suspect a problem with the drivers.
Hi,
I used to use a desktop to work, but I use a laptop now. My desktop has a SSD, so I am planning to format it and use it with my laptop. Then I got a question. Is it okay to just replace my laptop hdd to sdd without formatting?
Am using window vista business edition on my lenovo R500. Every time i connect a second external monitor my default laptop desktop shifts to the second external monitor automatically.

I used truecrypted V.6.3a to partially encrypted (5gb) on my 16gb usb flashdrive on my XP netbook and eveything was fine. However, I don't see the ecrypted partial (5gb) when stick the usb into windows 7-32 bits (desktop). Tried to re-encrypted the usb on windows 7 (desktop) but results are the same. No problem seeing it on XP but windows 7.
Thanks
How can I mount windows share file system into RHEL?
I'm not a sysadmin, but I got this task assigned :(
I've tried this solution
mount -t smbfs -o username=samba,password=samba //Desktop/Public /mnt/public
But the output is:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'
How can I mount a windows share into RHEL 5?
FWIW I've successfully created a link with the menu: Places>Connect to Server>Service Type:Windows Share
Which creates a link in the desktop, but I would need to programatically save files in that machine, hence I need it mounted as filesystem.
Thanks in advance
In windows XP, you can add a shortcut to the start menu or desktop for all users by copying/moving the shortcut to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users[Desktop|Start Menu]
I know same is the case in Windows 7 with a slightly different path (C:\Users\Public). However I'm still trying to find out how to add a 'shortcut' for all users. There is no C:\Users\Public\Taskbar.
Any ideas? Or is it just not available as a feature?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with KDE. I'm trying to setup my desktops with shortcuts alt+1 for desktop 1 and alt+2 for desktop 2 etc. The problem is that Page Settings refuses to change to the desired shortcut and gives no message as to why. When I press the alt key I see "Alt+" appear in the the box but when I add 1 it reverts back to "Input". Why won't KDE let me change the keyboard shortcut and what can I do to solve the problem?
I am using VIM for a while, but never faces such a problem.
When i connect to my desktop Ubuntu PC via ssh from a tablet (Asus tf Prime) using terminal emulator (screen-256-colors) I got my vim in Chinese... On desktop it is correctly working in English.
I've tried to set
set langmenu=en_US.UTF-8
language en_US.UTF-8
but it do not help... See screenshot

It's a pet peeve of mine that people leave the tower of their desktopcomputers in the small enclosed cabinet part of computer desks.
I've heard that heat issues can cause problems with PCs, but is this realistic? Is leaving the desktop in a cabinet area, or above-average-room-temp, a realistic potential cause of slowdowns?
(I'm completely aware that there are other contributing factors to computer 'slowness', just wondering if this is a realistic problem, or mostly mental).
I am new to Ubuntu(and Linux for that matter) and I am trying to access files using the terminal. The network folder is on my Desktop, but when I go to the Desktop folder via the terminal, the network folder is not there.
How do I access files on a network folder via the terminal?
I've configured xampp and firewall so I can access desktop pc's localhost over my local network through desktop pc's IP.
But I'm not able to access auctual projects:
I can access:
http://192.168.x.x/xampp or http://192.168.x.x/phpMyAdmin
But I cannot access:
http://192.168.x.x/myWebsite/
I get an error:
Server error

Hi,
MS Word 2007 files have a property page for entering details like summary and title. This is displayed when you hover over the documents on Desktop. Now on my Windows XP SP2 computer, inside Windows Explorer, it shows the special properties for all such files from Desktop, but not from the Network Drives. This is a big problem when I have a large collection of Word documents all in one folder.
How can I display these special properties (infotips) for documents in my network drives ?
Thanks :)
I've started using virtualenv for my Python projects. Since the working directory for my projects is now deeply nested, the path has started to take up half of my screen!
Is it possible to somehow have PowerShell condense the path to the current working directory, from something like C:\Users\kRON\Desktop\Current work\Python\dsp\src to C:\Users\kRON\Deskto~1\Curren~2\Python\dsp\src or, better yet, to match C:\Users\kRON\Desktop\Current work\Python\and just replace it with ~python\?
GNU Emacs 23.1, Windows XP.
I usually split a frame to four windows. How can I save this arrangement and restore at my next session?
Commands desktop-save and desktop-change-dir don't remember what I want.
Thanks.
