• Problems after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

  I upgraded to 12.04.1 from 10.04 recently and am running the Gnome Classic (no effects) desktop. I spent a couple of days tweaking the appearance and behaviour but there are two issues that I can't resolve. The mouse cursor frequently disappears, especially when scrolling through web pages or hovering over links/icons with tooltips. Moving the mouse brings the pointer back but it vanishes again almost immediately. Note I don't have unclutter or Parallels installed. The screen no longer fades to black when left idle for too long - it just cuts out. Bad news when watching content online. Any tips greatly appreciated. Cheers...

• Rotate a vector relative to itself

  I have a plane defined by transform.forward and transform.right, with 0 degrees corresponding to the forward vector and positive 90 degrees to the right vector. How can I create a third vector rotated in this plane. A rotation of 0 degrees would mean the vector is identical to transform.forward, a rotation of 30 degrees would mean it forms a 30 degree angle with the forward vector. In other words, I want to rotate the forward vector relative to itself, in the plane it defines with the right vector.

  Minutes ago I received a phone call that the caller ID listed as “Out of area”, which I knew was a bad sign. It was difficult to understand the caller because of his very thick accent. He told me that he was from Microsoft and that my computer was throwing a large number of errors and he was calling to help me. • Should business services cross bounded contexts?

  Firstly, I am following the convention that a bounded context is synonymous to a department, or possibly one department has 1 to many bounded contexts. We have a client consultancy department that has a Documentation Service. Documents are stored in the Document Store Service (which is where all documents in the company are stored - it is a utility service), and the Documentation Service stores information about that document (a business service). As it was designed for the client consultancy, it is information relevant to them. Now health and safety need somewhere to store information about a document. This is different information to client consultancy, but I have been instructed to extend the existing service to account for this extra information. I feel this service is now crossing a bounded context. My worry is that all departments will eventually store there information in here and the service will become bloated, trying to be all things to all departments. Each document record will only store a subset of the information because it will only belong to one department. It will get worse when different departments want to store the same information but refer to it in a diferent ways, or when two departments want to store different information that they refer to in the same way. In my understanding, this is exactly the reason for bounded contexts. I feel each department should have it's own business service for information about a document, but use the same utility service to actually store the document. What would be the correct approach?

• Evoluent Vertical Mouse - Re-mapping Buttons?

  I have the Evoluent Vertical Mouse at work and at home. One is wired, the other wireless. Ubuntu maps their buttons differently and it makes me crazy when I switch locations. I use 12.10, but same has applied to every Ubuntu version since 9.10. The wired mouse is as desired: top finger button is left-click, scroll wheel is middle click and scroll, middle finger button is a right-click. On the wireless version, bottom finger button is mapped to right-click and the middle finger button is center-click. • How to prioritize related game entity components?

  I want to make a game where you have to run over a bunch of zombies with your car. When moving around, the zombies have a few things to take into consideration: When there's no player around they might just roam about randomly. And even when some other component dictates a specific direction, they should wobble to the left and right randomly (like drunk people). This implies a small, random, deviation in their movement. They should avoid static obstacles. When they see they are headed towards a wall, they should reorient themselves. They should avoid the car. They should try to predict where the car will be based on its velocity and try to move out of the way. When they can, they should try to get near the player. All these types of decisions they have to do seem like they should be implemented in different components. But how should I manage them? How can I give different components different weights that reflect the importance of each decision (in a given situation)? I would need some other component that acts as a manager, but do you have any tips on how I should implement it? Or maybe there's a better solution?...

• Cannot upgrade or install 12.04 - Black screen

  An update from 11.10 to 12.04 failed because of a boot into black screen (Nvidia graphics card) after selecting normal boot in Grub (recovery console was available though). I then wiped the whole partition (deleting all proprietary drivers) and tried a fresh install, but could not run the installation cd because it was booting straight into a black screen again. Now I reinstalled 11.10 (and installed proprietary Nvidia driver version 173), and would like to ask 2 questions: 1 - Is there a proven method to fix this problem from the recovery console, so that I can safely try upgrading again (without much knowledge of Ubuntu)? 2 - Is there a website which I could check for updated Nvidia drivers packaged into the upgrade, so that I can safely upgrade without running into a black screen some time later on?

  Unity is misbehaving after installing GLX Dock - HUD does not open with GLX Dock turned off and there are ugly shadows in the panel,three control buttons (close,minimise,maximise) and "Ubuntu Desktop" label when there are no apps running.I have to click the top panel to get the super key to open the dash.   I've written an extension to RequestTracker for a client, but he says the performance isn't good enough. I'd like to do some profiling, but I'm not sure how to connect up a profiler (say NYTProf, for example)? I tried what the man page says and put PerlModule Devel::NYTProf::Apache in my apache config, but all I get in the results are Apache2:XSLoader, Devel::NYTProf::Apache and ModPerl::Util modules in the results, and neither my own nor RT's modules.

• Can't control connection bit rate using iwconfig with Atheros TL-WN821N (AR7010)

  I'm trying to reduce the connection bit rate on my Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 usb wifi adapter due to frequent instability issues (reported connection speed goes down to 1Mb/s and I have to physically reconnect the adapter to regain a connection). I know this is a common problem with this device, and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it, including using drivers from linux-backports; compiling and installing a custom firmware (following instructions on https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc#fw-free) and (as a last resort) using ndiswrapper. When using ndiswrapper, the wifi adapter is stable and operates in g mode at 54Mb/s (whilst when using the default ath9k_htc module, the adapter connects in n mode and the bit rate fluctuates constantly). Unfortunately, with this setup I have to run my processor using only one core, since using SMP with ndiswrapper causes a kernel oops on my system. So I want to lock my bit rate to 54Mb/s (or less, if need be) for connection stability, using the ath9k_htc module. I've tried 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M'; the command runs with no error but when I check the bit rate with 'sudo iwlist wlan0 bitrate' the command returns: wlan0 unknown bit-rate information. Current Bit Rate:78 Mb/s Any ideas? Here's some info (hopefully relevant) on my setup: Xubuntu (12.04.3) 64bit (kernel 3.2.0-55.85-generic) using Network Manager. • Why isn't one of the constant buffers being loaded inside the shader?

  I however got the model to load under tessellation; only problem is that one of the constant buffers aren't actually updating the shader's tessellation factor inside the hullshader. I created a messagebox at the rendering point so I know for sure the tessellation factor is assigned to the dynamic constant buffer. Inside the shader code where it says .Edges[1] = tessellationAmount; the tessellationAmount is suppose to be sent from the dynamic buffer to the shader. Otherwise it's just a plain box. In better explanation; there's a matrixBuffer, cameraBuffer, TessellationBuffer for constant. There's a multiBuffer array that assigns the matrix, camera, tesselation. So, when I set the Hull Shader, PixelShader, VertexShader, DomainShader it gets assigned by the multibuffer. E.G. devcon-HSSetConstantBuffers(0,3,multibuffer); The only way around the whole ideal would be to go in the shader and change how much the edges tessellate and inside the edges as well with the same number. My question is why wouldn't the tessellationBuffer not work in the shader?

• Question about modeling with MVC (the pattern, not the MS stuff / non web)

  I'm working on an application in which I'm looking to employ the MVC pattern, but I've come up against a design decision point I could use some help with. My application is going to deal with the design of state-machines. Currently the MVC model holds information about the machine's states, inputs, outputs, etc. The view is going to show a diagram for the machine, graphically allowing the user to add new states, establish transitions, and put the states in a pleasing arrangement, among other things. I would like to store part of the diagram's state (e.g. the x and y state positions) when the machine information is stored for later retrieval, and am wondering how best to go about structuring the model(s?) for this. It seems like this UI information is more closely related to the view than to the state-machine model, so I was thinking that a secondary model might be in order, but I am reluctant to pursue this route because of the added complexity. Adding this information to the current model doesn't seem the right way to go about it either. This is the my first time using the MVC pattern so I'm still figuring things out. Any input would be appreciated.

• USB keyboard does not load after 13.10 upgrade

  Problem: Running kernel 3.11.0-12-generic after a Ubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 my USB keyboard is not recognised, thus I am not able to unlock my encrypted disk. I suspect it might be related to a minimal/incorrect install of initrd. Question: How do I go about getting the newest kernel to recognise my generic USB keyboard, allowing me to unlock my encrypted disk? What I have tried: I have already re-installed the newest kernel: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image and I have also updated the initrd: update-initramfs -c -k 3.11.0-12-generic Back story: I just completed upgrading my Ubuntu system from 13.04 to 13.10. When I subsequently rebooted by system I was no longer able to enter my encryption password (passphrase) as the keyboard drivers did not load. Temporary workaround: Earlier in the boot process (before the keyboard stops working) I was able to enter GRUB menu were I choose to boot from an older kernel (3.8.0-31-generic) which did load the USB keyboard drivers. This is currently the kernel I am running. Thanks

• /build folder used by PEAR

  I've just noticed a root directory (/build) which I can't seem to find any information for. It looks like it's some sort of staging ground for PEAR (PHP). There are only two folders of different php versions in it, and each of those has a few PEAR tar files I've installed (via the PEAR command line). I'm really only asking this question because I find is strange PEAR (and only PEAR) would create its own root directory to store files. Is this normal? Does Ubuntu provide a /build directory for applications to use?

• When do I bite the bullet and hire a developer? [closed]

  I have an awesome URL, I've had it since the mid 90's, and up until around 2002 I was having an awesome time writing music reviews and features into static pages and adding their URL to static index pages and everything was just great. Then things got complicated really fast, and for one reason or another I handed the site over to a very talented friend who turned it into a db based site run by cf. Now, here I am around twelve years later putting it all back together using mysql, php and css on a need-to-learn basis and even though I'm sooo close to where I want it to be I realize, erm, it should have been written using mysqli etc etc ad infinitum. So I'm wondering at what point do I just give in and hire a developer to take over, how much does it even cost, and how do I know I'm working with someone who is better than I am?
