  I am a self taught.. NEW..programmer. The language I chose was Objective-C so I can write for Apple products. I have learned the hard way that Objective-C has a steep learning curve but have forced myself to look at it over and over until I get it. I feel I am completing one major step and that is becoming very comfortable with the syntax and now as I enter the next big step...finding out what is possible with a computer language - I am thinking that all software is just developed within the confines of classes-loops-booleans-IF/OR statements-variables-etc. Is that a true assessment? When thinking of software in my head do I just need to learn to convert it all to arrays-loops/variables/classes - IF/OR statements - etc? Sorry if this question sounds funny but I am just learning how to take the language in my head and talk (what I think is) the language of a computer. Is there a good book or tutorial that helps illustrate how to speak computer speak?

  i use gnome classic, i'm not a mouse fan. when i get an email while i'm writing code, i i would super+s to get to the indicator-applet-complete and read it. also to write emails, or check unread instant messages. upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 made super+s bind to applications menu rather than the indicator applet complete. i removed the binding from the applications using dconf-editor, navigating to: org-gnome-desktop-wm-keybindings and disabling (['disabled']) the panel-main-menu key. now, how do i bind super+s to the indicator applet complete? it seems to be some how binded, since if if press super+s and then move the cursor over the applet it'll open the drop down menus (and it won't if i hover without pressing super+s) but i don't want to have to use the mouse...

  I have a friend in prison who wants to learn to program. He's got no access to a computer so I was wondering if people could recommend books that would be a good introduction to programming without requiring a computer. Obviously he's going to need to keep learning once he gets out and has access to a computer, but how should he get started now (he's got lots of free time to read). Based on his goals I think ruby or javascript/html5 might be good paths for him to start down, but really for now it's most important to explain the ideas. Even if it's all pseudocode. These need to be physical publications, paperbacks are preferred, and consider that he's got limited shelf space so large books could be a problem.

• Ubuntu dual boot OS crashed my computer. Now my computer won't boot. Please Help

  I've just tried to install ubuntu 12.04 dual boot OS with Windows 7 and it finished installing in ubuntu. However, it said that the bootloader "grub.." failed to install. The same exact problem here I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS. . When I tried to restart my computer, it went to the hp screen since my computer is a dv6 hp laptop and then it goes into this black screen with no words or any buttons will work. There is just a blinking underscore that seems like it'll allow me to type but makes error sounds when I type. Is this because I possibly partitioned my memory incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very desperate. ANY HELP would be great. Thanks.

  I had Windows Vista on my computer and wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 and thought that I would format my computer since it had been awhile. When I installed Windows 7 it wouldnt let me it would go through all the installation and then when my computer rebooted it would just be black screen with my mouse, I have tried mulitpule times now, and have just gone backs to Windows Vista, this no longer works and does the same thing as when I tried to insta I have a Nvidia GTX 275 video card, ASUS m2N-E SLI mother board,and a AMD 5200 Dual core processor

• Windows XP computer can't see Windows 7 shares

  I am building a network containing notably a laptop running XP and a computer running Windows 7. Both computer have shared folders and the 7 has a shared printer, to which another laptop running 7 is able to print. If I attempt to see the laptop's network shares on the PC, everything works perfectly: I am able to see and enter the folders. The reverse operation however doesn't work. Xp doesn't see the Windows 7 PC. Other things to note: As mentioned above, another Windows 7 computer is able to see the printer and I can ping both computers from either PC. Both computers are in the same workgroup named ALLAITEMENT Password-protected shares are turned off on the PC. The 7 Computer uses 40/56 bit encryption The Windows XP laptop has SP3

  I'm in a situation where I act as a sort of techinical support to my family and less techinically experienced friends. I'm looking for a remote desktop solution where it's possible to setup a "zero-install, double click an icon"-solution where the client computer contacts me so that I may interact with their desktop. The last part is important as the people in need of my help don't know how to configure their router or even the firewall software on their own computer. They are able to click an accept button when asked if a program should be able to make outgoing connections. They have many different kinds of routers, as well as software firewalls, and I rather not deal with the problem of how to connect to them using whatever as well as the actual problem they are having. It must be: Free of charge for non-commercial use. Possible to use it in a mode where the computer wanting to share its desktop should be able to make a connection to my computer. My computer has a DNS name we can use. Compatible with both Windows XP and Windows 7. Independent of a third party server or infrastructure. Explanations of the above: I don't want to spend money on it when I help them for free. If it's free as in freedom, all the better! I guess this boils down to being callable like showdesktopto.exe opscomputer.com where opscomputer.com is my computers DNS name. If that is possible then I can create a shortcut they can use to connect to me when they need help. It's nice if it's possible to specify a password or key file which I can use to authenticate myself, but it's not required. They use the OS which their machine comes installed with. That means Windows XP or 7. I want something which will work in the long run. Using a third party service which might not be available when I need it disqualified such solutions.

• My Windows 8 computer does not come out of Standby

  My computer will not come out out of standby. It has had this issue ever since I bought it ~4 years ago. When I purchased it, It came with Vista, I have since upgraded it to 7 and now 8 Pro, each time hoping that it would fix the problem, each time finding that it did not. My computer is an HP Pavilion Model #: m9500y. The computer goes into standby, but does not come out of it properly. If Hybrid sleep in on, it does not respond at all. If Hybrid sleep is off, It comes out and I can see the desktop for a bit, but then the screen goes black again and I have to reboot. I have tried Running a sfc, and a chkdsk in case it's a corrupted file, but it hasn't helped. This isn't too serious an issue because I can just shutdown my computer and turn it on the old fashioned way, but it is annoying and I would appreciate some advice going forward as I'm currently stumped.

• Computer still in boot loop

  My computer is in a boot loop and despite all my efforts, I haven't been able to load windows XP with it. When the computer loads, I see some white loading bar at the bottom, then the windows XP loading screen, then the DELL boot screen, then windows XP loading screen, and it just keeps looping. The blue screen error is: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME Stop: 0x000000ED (0x823D6C08, 0xC000009C, 0x000000000, 0x000000000) I have booted using Hiren's mini XP, and ran CHKDSK /f /r, but it didn't affect the boot loop. Is there anything else I can try to get my computer to start up? I don't have my windows XP disc, but I have a dvd burner on another computer, and can burn a downloaded ISO if it could help me get out of this loop. Thanks!

  I just got myself a wifi capable cell phone, but I dont have a wireless internet at home. I do have a wired unlimited internet connection on my computer, and I wonder whether there is any gadget that I can plug into my computer (maybe at the usb port?) with which I can turn my computer into a wifi access point? I mean, a dongle or something which will enable me to connect my phone to my computer's internet through wi-fi? Also, I dont know anything about networking, so would it be hard for me to set up a secure wifi point? Thank you for reading this question through.   How to make a computer (in particular, my laptop) to perform some mechanical movements without buying anything $5, soldering things inside computer or creating big sophisticated circuits? Traditionally CD-ROM tray is used to make computer do some movement IRL by, for example, SSH command, but in laptop tray is one-shot (unless manually reloaded) and also not very comfortable [mis]usage. Some assistance circuits can be in use too, but not complex. For example, there is a little motor that can work on USB power. Devices in my computer: DVD-ROM tray: one-time push. USB power: continuous power to the motor or LEDS or relay that turns on something powerful. Audio card. 3 outputs (modprobe alsa model=test can set Mic and Line-in as additional output). One controllable DC output (microphone) that can power up LED and some electronic (may be even mechanic?) relay. Also with sophisticated additional circuiting can control a lot of devices with a good precision. Both input and output support. Probably the most useful object in computer for radio ham. Modem. Don't know about this much, it doesn't work because of hsfmodem crashes kernel if memory is = 1GB. May be it's "pick up" and "hang up" can turn on and off power taken from USB port? Video card. VGA port? S-Video port? Will them be useful? Backlight. Tunable, but probably unuseful. CardBus (or some) slot. Nothing interesting for the task probably (is it?). AC adapter and battery. Probably nothing programmable here. /* My AC adapter already have additional jacks to connect extra devics */ Keyboard. No use. Touchpad. Good sensor (synclient -m 1), but no output. Various LEDs inside laptop. Probably too weak and requires soldering. Fans inside laptop. Poor control over them, requires soldering and dangerous to tinker. HDD (internal and external) that can be spin down and up (hdparm -Y, cat /dev/ubb). But connecting anything serially with it's power line makes HDD underpowered... And too complex. Is something are missed? Any ideas how to use described components? Any other ideas? May be there are easily available /* in developing countries */ cheap devices like "enhanced multimeters" that are controllable from computer and can provide configurable output and measure current and other things? Things to aid pushing many physical buttons with computer. Isn't this a simple idea and implementation and a lot of use in good hands?

• Computer not acknowledging sound card after move

  We just got our computer back from having moved and when I tried to hook our speaker system, the computer keeps telling me that I don't have a sound system installed. It's a Dell computer with the original surround/subwoofer system that it came with and was working fine before the move. I tried buying a new speaker system (Logitech) to see if it would work, but still saying I have no audio device installed and it's not showing up in my device manager. I opened up the computer and unplugged the sound card, then plugged it back in, still nothing. I put the install disc from the sound card in the cd-rom, but it's saying that I have no sound device hardware in my system.

  hello I am a graduate student now, and hopefully someday I will teach. my interests are C++, Python, embedded languages, and scientific computing. Meanwhile I daydream about how I would teach. I was not quite happy with my undergraduate university as I found many computer science classes lacking. so I would like to ask you, if you were a student, how would you like your computer science classes to be taught? I understand it is a very subjective question, but nevertheless I think it's important to know what people want. Some specific points I am interested in: should computer languages be taught explicitly, or should students be required to pick up language on their own? what is better for learning, tests, projects, some sort of take-home exam? how do you think classtime should be used? theory, introduction, explanations, etc.? do you think the group projects are important? how much about computer architecture do you want to learn in computer science class, not necessarily assembler class. should particular operating system/editor be mandated or encouraged? • Online computer not responding to pings

  I was doing a bit of scanning on my network lately, knew all the hostnames to each computer connected. But whilst pinging one of them ping returned Request timed out.. This is strange as I know the computer is online and that the computer responds correctly to pinging on a different (enterprise) network. Is there something on the computer, my network, or my computer that is bugging with this? - That's just a sub-question, I don't expect this to be the main answer. The real question: Why does this happen? Why does pinging the IP4 address not work? EDIT : Pinging the Hostname used to default to the IP4 address, but now it defaults to the IP6 address. Why does this happen? But now that it pings using IP6, how come it all of a sudden works? > ping -6 THE_COMPUTER Pinging THE_COMPUTER [lengthy IP6 address] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Ping stats: Sent = 4, Recieved = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss) But when this is done using IP4 it doesn't work. So there are now two questions: How come IP6 works and not IP4? Why does IP4 not work?

  I installed ubuntu 10.04, Apache, PHP, mysql, smb. Everything work fine in locally in my IP. When i trying to access my computer from LAN (other computer), it shows unable to connect. when i ping my IP from remote computer, its pinging OK. I can access internet, and all other systems (http, smb). But the problem is no one can't access my computer remotely in my LAN network. My ip is 192.168.85.105 and i want access(Appaceh,SMB) from 192.168.85.10. Is there any proxy firewall settings? I had tried following commands.. sudo iptables -F or sudo iptables-restore [logout require] If it does not work then try to disable net-filter sudo ufw --disable Please give me the solution.

• using a second computer as a mere screen/monitor in X (VNC?)

  Hello My goal is to use three monitors with my Linux system. It is a laptop, so adding another video card is not the easiest solution. (I have investigated a number of such options: getting a docking station with a PCI slot, USB/Cardbus vga adapters, etc, and for the time being don't want to go that way.) I am wondering if using an older desktop+screen I have lying around as the third "monitor" might be the easiest solution, if only there is a way to get it to work as a seamless, integrated desktop. I was wondering if I can use VNC or perhaps X itself (?) to achieve the following: computer A is my main computer; it has all my files, etc. computer B is used just to display on an additional screen keyboard+mouse are connected to computer A use VNC or X to connect the two so that computer B shows a X screen that is just as if it was a third physical screen connected to computer A. I don't know if the last point is clear, but what I mean is that I would like to be able to: be able to have my window manager assign/move around virtual desktops on all three screens move windows back and forth between the screens attached to computer A and the screen of computer B be able to copy something in an app being shown on a screen of computer A and paste it into an app being shown on the screen attached to computer B access the filesystem on my main computer (A) when using applications that are being shown on the screen attached to computer B Basically, I would like X to treat computer B just like it was nothing but a third physical screen... Just recently I started to think, can they access my home folder and copy all the files from there? I have Windows 7 Pro.
