• How to sync two computers using new MobileMe calendar

  I have been using MobileMe for over a year with success. I use it to sync my Outlook calendars in my work and home computers, using Windows 7 and Outlook 2007. The main Outlook calendar folder in my work computer is replicated to MobileMe as "Work", and synced to my home computer, and the main calendar folder in my home computer is replicated to MobileMe as "Home", and synced to my work computer. This means that I can see both "Work" and "Home" calendars from both computers (as well as from the web interface through me.com), which is very convenient. Yesterday I migrated to the new MobileMe calendar, accepting the suggestion that popped up on the me.com website. After the migration, the MobileMe control panel on each of Windows computers asked me to re-configure my calendar setup, and everything fell apart. The "Home" and "Work" calendar folders in Outlook are now ignored by MobileMe, and new ones named "Home in MobileMe" and "Work in MobileMe" have been created, and placed in a separate Outlook data file rather than the default. This means that now: I now have four folders, two of which are not replicated to MobileMe The two folders that are not replicated reside on a separate data file, so alarms and reminders don't work; they're basically useless to me as calendar folders In addition, the button in the MobileMe Control Panel that used to let me specify what MobileMe folder should be synced against the default Outlook folder has gone. MobileMe is now too smart. Do you have any idea how to undo this mess and go back to a situation where I have two folders, as described in the top paragraph, which keep synced? I don't want an extra data file. Thanks.

• Hardware needed to route between two networks over wireless

  I recently rented an apartment about 100 yards from my brother's house. I have line of sight to his house and can pick up his home AP signal with one of my two laptops if I go out on my balcony (facing his house) or put the laptop by the window. The other laptop will sometimes see the SSID broadcast, but fails to connect, drops, etc. We would like to set up a persistent wireless connection between our homes. We would prefer each network be logically segmented as independent networks, but he will share his internet connection. I've got a bunch of tv shows saved to a NAS by my TiVO that I'd like to make available to him across the wireless link. My brother strongly prefers to not mess with his WAP at all. His network is running fine and is afraid to mess it up. I guess you could say he is "technologically declined". If we can get a reliable 11Mbps connection we will be satisfied. What hardware do I need to make this work? I was thinking a router with two wireless interfaces (external antennas) a wired interface, and a directional antenna mounted on my balcony facing his house. Can anyone recommend hardware to make this happen? Cheaper is better. I'll only be living in the area a year or two. I do have an old satellite TV antenna if that can be used to direct the signal.

• Two hosts on same subnet can't see each other

  I've got two routers with two separate public IP addresses on the same subnet, but I can't get them to talk to each other. Both are connected to the internet (ISP-provided gateway) via Ethernet ports provided by the landlord, but I don't have access to or knowledge of how those are physically connected or the protocols used to get back to the ISP. I can ping either from the outside, but they can't ping each other. Traceroutes in and out look the same, and they receive the same gateway over DHCP. I can ping other IPs on the subnet, so I assume this is not any sort of intentional isolation for security/privacy. Since I'm in a setup where my landlord provides internet and we don't have contact with the ISP, I can't really ask the ISP for help (doubt the landlord would know much either.) The situation is similar to the diagram at this question, but instead of the two servers, there's another router coming off the (presumed) switch, and I don't have access to the switch. I've tried giving them static routes to each other with the ISP internet gateway as the gateway, but that's not working. One is a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT, the other is a Netgear WGR614v7, although I could get something more capable if necessary. I'd like to keep them each connected directly to the ISP on their WAN ports, but I can have an ethernet cable between them if necessary - I'm wondering if there's a way without that, and if there isn't, I'd appreciate advice on how to get that working. Sorry this is so nitpicky; there are reasons for all the constraints, but they don't apply to the real question, so I left them out. ;) Thank you!

• Creating a bootable USB drive from a distro split over two DVD ISOs

  I am searching and not finding the right way to do this. Please note, I don't think I'm trying for anything strange here. I just want to make a bootable USB stick of a single OS that happens to be larger than one DVD and happens to be larger than FAT32 will allow for in a single file. On our slow connection I spent a long time downloading CentOS 5.9's two DVD ISOs: CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.4 GB) CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (718 MB) I have a USB stick that I want to somehow get these two ISOs on. Since the first one is 4.4 GB, I can't use ISO2USB because it insists on FAT32. I cannot find an alternative that lets you specify more than one ISO image--of the same distro, I'm not trying for some fancy multi-boot thing--to put on the same stick. I guess I should have downloaded the CD ISOs, but I thought I was "saving time" because then I wouldn't have as many files to run through the md5 checker. There's no IMG file of the whole thing (only a net install version, which I don't want--I want to pre-download everything) otherwise I would've gone for that. So, given that I have these two DVD ISOs, how can I get them on a stick that will boot and make use of both of them properly to install CentOS somewhere? Again, I don't think this is anything out of the ordinary, yet I can't find software/docs that seem to support this. Am I stuck re-downloading everything in CD-sized ISOs just to do this? I found this, but it doesn't run on Windows. I am using Windows to prepare the stick.

• Extending a home wireless network using two routers running tomato

  I have two Asus RT-N16 routers each flashed with Tomato (actually Tomato USB). UPSTAIRS: Router 'A' (located upstairs) is connected to the internet via the WAN port and connected via a LAN port to a 10/100/1000 switch (Switch A). Several desktops are also attached to Switch A. Router A uses IP 192.168.1.1. DOWNSTAIRS: I've just acquired Router 'B' and set it to IP 192.168.1.2. I have a cable running from Switch A downstairs to another switch (Switch B). Tivo, a blu-ray player and a Mac are connected to Switch B. My plan was to connect Router B to Switch B so that I have improved wireless access downstairs. (The wireless signal from Router A gets weak downstairs in a number of locations.) How should I configure Router B so that all devices in the house can see and talk to one another? I know that I need to change DHCP on Router B so that it doesn't cover the same range as DHCP on Router A. Should I be using WDS on the two routers, or is that unnecessary since I already have a wired connection between the two routers? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! --Jeff

• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution.   Still on my quest to compress/decompress files with a Java implementation of Huffman's coding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_coding) for a school assignment. From the Wikipedia page, I quote: Create a leaf node for each symbol and add it to the priority queue. While there is more than one node in the queue: Remove the two nodes of highest priority (lowest probability) from the queue Create a new internal node with these two nodes as children and with probability equal to the sum of the two nodes' probabilities. Add the new node to the queue. The remaining node is the root node and the tree is complete. Now, emphasis: Remove the two nodes of highest priority (lowest probability) from the queue Create a new internal node with these two nodes as children and with probability equal to the sum of the two nodes' probabilities. So I have to take two nodes with the lowest frequency. What if there are multiple nodes with the same low frequency? How do I discriminate which one to use? The reason I ask this is because Wikipedia has this image: And I wanted to see if my Huffman's tree was the same. I created a file with the following content: aaaaeeee nnttmmiihhssfffouxprl And this was the result: Doesn't look so bad. But there clearly are some differences when multiple nodes have the same frequency. My questions are the following: What is Wikipedia's image doing to discriminate the nodes with the same frequency? Is my tree wrong? (Is Wikipedia's image method the one and only answer?) I guess there is one specific and strict way to do this, because for our school assignment, files that have been compressed by my program should be able to be decompressed by other classmate's programs - so there must be a "standard" or "unique" way to do it. But I'm a bit lost with that. My code is rather straightforward. It literally just follows Wikipedia's listed steps. The way my code extracts the two nodes with the lowest frequency from the queue is to iterate all nodes and if the current node has a lower frequency than any of the two "smallest" known nodes so far, then it replaces the highest one. Just like that.

• pfSense with two WANs, routing skype traffic over a specific WAN

  I have a pfSense setup with two WANs (WAN1 and WAN2) and one LAN network. The two WANs are setup for failover. However, QoS has recently been an issue for skype calls in our office place (about 30 people) so we want to dedicate WAN2 for skype traffic (we use skype for all voip calls, etc.) As Skype is notoriously difficult to deal with, does anyone have any suggestions on how I should deal with this? • Accessing two networks connected to gateway from behind the gateway

  I have a Windows XP machine acting as internet gateway. It is connected to two different networks, one, say LAN1, connects to internet and other, say LAN2, to outside LAN. My machine is sitting behind the gateway. I have set up internet connection sharing on LAN1 and can access internet on my machine but i can't access anything from LAN2.   I have two internet connections, one is internet via our organization's corporate LAN network, and the other one is mobile broadband via a USB modem Is there anyway I can share internet connections and use them simultaneously? I want to use the corporate LAN network for normal browsing and connecting my email client, and I want to use the USB modem for establishing a VPN connection. Will I be able to maintain both the connections simultaneously? Can I have parallel downloads, one using our corporate network, and the other one using the mobile broadband? • forward mails from sendmail + mimedefang on two unix boxes

  I am not a unix expert, more like a novice. I have one user account replicated on two unix boxes receiving same mails on both boxes for fail over. Sendmail has mimedefang utility running to process these mails. After all the processing is complete, more like weeding the spam, viruses etc. I need to forward these mails coming to the same account on both boxes to goto a central mailbox on MS Exchange for this account. Problem is I am using .forward file hence both unix boxes forward the mail after processing. I just want to be able to ignore one of the two mails. Has anyone tried something similar? any directions? Please?

  I have been experimenting with the thought of running two Tor clients at once on my machine. So I decided to try it and modified the source a bit to let me run two clients at once (of course with separate data dirs). But they both get the same exit node, and if I try to switch exit node on one of them via its control port, they both get switched. I have been experimenting with this some more, and Tor always seem to get the same IP, even if I run several separate clients (on the same machine) at once. Is this the expected behavior?

• One domain hiding two servers

  For our SaaS web-app we have two identical servers in two geographically separated data centers. FOO_1 is the production server and does real-time (MySQL master-slave) replication to its backup F00_2. We want our users to always go to THEFOO.COM which somehow points to the production server. So even if FOO_1 dies, we can just switch THEFOO.COM to redirect to FOO_2 so the failure is transparent. This switch can be manual or automatic but without failback (if FOO_1 somehow becomes available again). Is there a way to do this with DNS? I am getting stuck with ANAME and CNAMEs configuration. We don't use sub-domains, just straight domains. If not, what are other options? Does it make sense to just have a web server at LOVELY_FOO.COM and just redirect all traffic? I also looked at load balancers but didn't see a solution for across data centers/network providers.

  I've read multiple news articles that claim Hotmail offers two-factor authentication. One of the articles describes Hotmail's system, saying ...whenever you go to Hotmail...you can choose to get a single-use code–a string of numbers that will be sent via text message to your phone–to use instead of your password. Is this an accurate description of Hotmail's system? If so, does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? If you can use either your password or a single-use code, it seems to me that it does not. Is this system really more secure than just having a password? Doesn't this just make an additional "key" available to a hacker? (I must be wrong here, I know the folks at Microsoft are much smarter than I am).

• usb vs firewire for connecting two RAID 0 disks

  I have a 2TB and a 4TB RAID 0 external drives (both have two physical hard drives in them). Both have a FW800, FW400, and USB port. My MacBook Pro has one FW800 port and two USB ports. I want to copy data from the 4TB drive to the 2TB drive. Is it better to A - connect both directly to the laptop, one with USB and one with FW800 or B - connect the 4TB drive to laptop with FW800 and the 2TB drive to the 4TB drive using a FW400 cable? Anyone have problems daisy-chaining RAID 0 disks using FW? Thanks!

  I have a single Vista OEM registration number which has been registered to the current hardware (single partition only), and I want to use it for two instances of dual-booted Vista... Because both Vistas will be running on the same hardware, (and obviously only one at any one time), will they both be recognized as genuine to Windows Update etc... ie will they both pass the Windows Genuine Advantage requirements? .. The only difference between the hardware involved will be the partition. Also, are there any special issues with dual (tripple?) booting two instances of Vista and also one Ubuntu OS?

• Failures when copying between two external drives on the same controller

  I'm encountering a weird problem which is present both on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, on two different machines. When trying to copy between two external drives connected to the same USB controller, the transfer will randomly hang at some random time (after copying 300MB, 1GB, 10GB - it doesn't appear to depend on the dataset being copied). The hang appears to happen faster in 10.04. It appears to happen slower if both drives are connected to a hub. If the drives are connected to 2 distinct physical ports on the machine, the hang will be very fast. Hangs cannot be reproduced if: Data is copied from the first external drive to an internal drive, then to the second external drive Drives are connected to different USB controllers, for example the first one is connected to the built-in controller and the second one via an external PCMCIA controller. lspci says the first machine has an Intel ICH9 USB controller, the second an Intel ICH4. Is this a hardware problem, a kernel problem or a software issue? I used Nautilus when copying the files.

One for public traffic and one for a management traffic. Both interfaces have same mac address. DHCP server can detect interfaces via dhcp option field and dhcp class declarations. Every terminal have to have static ip address instead of dynamic address. With dynamic address and dynamic pools this would be an easy task. Or is there any dhcp server that can do this?

  Hi, after installig Ubuntu 10.04 Remix I can see two timer applets in the notification area. When I click on the first one, I can see the current date and the menues "Open Calendar", "Set Time and Date". When I click on the second one, I can see a small calendar of the current month and a small world map with my defined locations. I just want to have only one timer to safe some space in the notification area. How to disable one of the two applets? To click "Remove from Panel" isn't possible in the Remix edition!

  Is bonding the preferred way of implementing ISP redundancy? In the texts I've seen, bond device has a netmask, gateway of it's own. How can this be obtained if there are two different gateways from two uplinks, which one to choose? Do I need any special routing rules to go with it or does simply configuring separate interfaces (using Debian, /etc/network/interfaces), i.e eth1, eth2 for their corresponding uplinks and bonding them to bond0 handle routing automatically? If I want to NAT client machines, do they use bond device's IP as a gateway? Does the bond0 device is the device that goes into iptables nat rules? Thanks

  I would like to run two XAMPP apache servers and mysql on one Windows computer. My first idea was to run one under directory XAMPP, the other under XAMPP_B. Why you ask? I have two applications that have to be in the "root" directory of localhost. Both servers do not have to be active at same time, so I don't think I will have any conflicts I will have to modify my.cnf in mySQL httpd.conf, apache_start and maybe other config files as well. Or maybe someone can suggest a better way...

  As far as I know in order to use two subnets on one physical cable VLAN's are recommended. However, is it possible to achieve this (i.e: two subnets on one physical network) like 192.168.1.0/24 and 10.0.0.0/8 networks. What kind of problems or hidden rocks this way contains? With VLAN's it's possible to better isolate so users wouldn't easly sniff the other network. But in my environment it's okay if user on one subnet could listen to the traffic on another network. Is it the only problem?

• Real time mirroring between two sql server databases

  Hi, I'm a c# programmer, not a DBA and I've had the (mis)fortune to be handed a database admin task. So please bear this in mind when answering this question. What I've been asked to do is to create a real time two-way mirror between two databases with a 10 Megabit connection between them. So when either changes it updates the other. This is not a standard data mirroring/failover task where one DB is the master and the other is a backup - both are live and each needs to instantly reflect changes made to the other. In my head this sounds like a tall order, one which may even be impossible - after all in a rapidly changing environment with lots of users this is going to be massively resource intensive and create locks and queues of jobs all over the place. Is it possible? If so, can anyone either give me some basic instructions and/or point me at some places to start my reading and research? Cheers, Matt
