• The Open Data Protocol

  Well, day 2 of the MIX10 conference did not disappoint.  The keynote speakers introduced the preview release of IE9, which looks really cool and quick, and Visual Studio 2010 RC that is scheduled to RTM on April 12th.  It seemed to have a lot of improvements aimed at making developers more productive.  Here are the current links to these two offerings: Internet Explorer 9 – Platform Preview Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 – Release Candidate While both of these were interesting, the demos that really blew me away today centered around the work being done with The Open Data Protocol, or OData for short!  OData is a recommended standard being pushed by Microsoft that uses a REST based interface to interact with various types of data in a uniform manner.  Data producers then provide the data to consumer in either ATOM or JSON formats as requested by the client application.   Ever since we’ve been using Data we’ve been religious. Religious about the way we represent it and equally religious about the way we access it. Be it plain old SQL, DAO, ADO, ADO.Net and I am just referring to religions in MSFT world. A peek outside and I’d need a separate book to list out the Data faiths. Various application areas in networked computing are converging under the HTTP umbrella with a plausible transition to purist HTTP and in turn REST fuelled by the Web2.0 storm. It was time the Data access faiths also gave up the religious silos wrapped around our long worshipped data publishing and access methods. OData is the secular solution we have at hand today. It is an open protocol for sharing data. It can be exposed via REST. It is Open as in the Microsoft Open Specification Promise. This allows virtually everyone to build Data Services for any runtime. OData is one of the key standards for Data publishing/subscribing on Microsoft Codename Dallas. For us .Netters OData data sources can be exposed/consumed via WCF Data Services and the process is very simple, elegant and intuitive. • TechEd 2012: Office, SharePoint And More Office

  I haven’t spent any time looking at Office 365 up to this point.  I met Donovan Follette on the flight down from Chicago.  I also got to spend some time discussing the product offerings with him at the TechExpo and that sealed my decision to attend this session. The main actor of his presentation is the BCS – Business Connectivity Services. He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation.   Almost everybody can figure out how to change their IP address using an interface, but did you know you can set your network card’s IP address using a simple command from the command line? Changing Your IP From the Command Line in Linux Note: This will work on all Debian based Linux Distro’s. To get started type ifconfig into the terminal and hit enter, take note of the name of the interface that you want to change the settings for. To change the settings, you also use the ifconfig command, this time with a few parameters: sudo ifconfig eth0   192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 That’s about all all you need to do to change your IP, of course the above command assumes a few things: The interface that you want to change the IP for is eth0 The IP you want to give the interface is 192.168.0.1 The Subnet Mask you want to set for the interface is 255.255.255.0 If you run ifconfig again you will see that your interface has now taken on the new settings you assigned to it. If you wondering how to change the Default Gateway, you can use the route command. sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.253 eth0 Will set your Default Gateway on the eth0 interface to 192.168.0.253. To see your new setting, you will need to display the routing table. route -n That’s all there is to it.   There were a lot of announcements made during the keynote at MIX10 today, most notable were the releases of Silverlight 4 RC, Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010, Expression Blend 4 Beta and the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools.  I was glad to see that developers will be able to use Silverlight to create awesome applications for Windows Phone 7 so we can reuse our WPF and Silverlight skills to target mobile devices! • when to introduce an application services tier in an n-tier application

  I am developing a web based application whose primary objective is to fetch data from the database, display it on the UI, take in user inputs and write them back to the database. The application is not going to be doing any industrial strength algorithm crunching, but will be receiving a very high number of hits at peak times (described below) which will be changing thru the day. The layers are your typical Presentation, Business, Data. The data layer is taken care of by the database server. The business layer will contain the DAL component to access the database server over tcp. The choices I have to separate these layers into tiers are: The presentation and business layers can be either kept on the same tier. The presentation layer on a separate tier by itself and the business layer on a separate tier by itself. In the case of choice 2, the business layer will be accessed by the presentation layer using a WCF service either over http or tcp. I don't see any heavy processing being done on the Business layer, so I am leaning towards option 1 above. I also feel for the same reason, adding a new tier will only introduce the network latency. However, in terms of scalability in case I need to scale up or scale out, which is a better way to go? This application will need to be able to support up to 6 million users an hour. There will be a reasonable amount of data in each user session, storing user's preferences and other details. I will be using page level caching as well.

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. • Guidance for Web XML Api's

  I have to create an API for our application that is accessible over HTTP. I envision the API's responses to be simple XML documents. It won't be a REST API (not in the strict sense of REST). I am fairly new to this space - of course I've had to consume some Web API's in my work, but often they are already wrapped in language native libraries (i.e., TweetSharp). I'm looking for information to guide the design of an API. Are there any articles, blog posts, etc. that review and expound upon the design choices to be made in a Web API? Design choices would be things like how to authenticate, URL structure, when users submit should the URL they POST to determine the action being performed or should all requests go to a common URL and some part of the POST'd data is responsible for routing to a command, should all responses have the same document root or should errors have a different root, etc., etc. Ideally, such articles or blog posts would enumerate through the common variations for any given point of design and expound on the advantages and disadvantages, such that they would inform me to make my own decision (as opposed to articles that simply explain one single way to do something). Does anyone have any links or wisdom they can share?

  A new MVC 2 project worked on my local machine but when it was deployed to the test server it gave the error 'Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.' I have the full Visual Studio 2010 installed on my local machine but just the .NET 4 framework installed on the test servers. It seems the MVC assemblies do not come with .NET 4 framework itself so how to make MVC 2 work on the test servers? When I installed Visual Studio 2010 on my local machine it came with all the fruit included (.NET4 framework, MVC2 etc) so the System.Web.Mvc.dll can be found in my machine's GAC (C:\Windows\assembly). However, since there is no need to bloat the web servers only the plain old .NET4 framework has been installed on the test servers. This does NOT include the MVC assembly and that is why it cannot be found by the web application. You need this assembly to be on your web servers that you are deploying to but you want to avoid having to copy them into the GAC manually and doing all that gacutil mess or maybe you don't have access to your servers if they are hosted by provider. Solution You need to make the System.Web.Mvc assembly bin deployable... okay that doesn't sound easy but here is how to do it for the necessary MVC references: Simply right click the reference and select 'Properties' Then change 'Copy Local' to 'True': Note If your server has .NET 3.5 sp1 installed the new(ish) assemblies System.Web.Routing and System.Web.Abstractions will already be in the GAC. If you had previously deployed an MVC 1 application to a .NET 3.5 server you may remember having to deploy the other two assemblies too. Since MVC2 requires at least .NET 3.5 sp1 you will not need to worry about these assemblies, just System.Web.Mvc

• Host is unreacheble with static networking configuration via /etc/network/interfaces while GUI NetworkManager is ok

  I have some trouble setting-up the network interface using the static IP configuration. I run ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.11.0-22 with the back-ports enabled. I followed these instructions from help.ubuntu.com but there seems to exist some conflict between the GUI approach (NetworkManager) and the command line approach. $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.1.1.50 gateway 10.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 dns-nameservers 192.168.3.45 192.168.8.10 $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart I than try to ping for example google.com ping -c 3 www.google.com the response is that the host is unreachable. The icon on the top right of the desktop says: wired network disconnected. If I work using the GUI approach (Edit Connections and so on...) all works great.   MTN is Africa's largest cellular phone company serving millions of customers across 21 countries. MTN uses Oracle WMS to manage its distribution activities and its sizzling growth. Just for perspective, since 2004, Africa has been the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world. The extensive automation at MTN includes interface with Conveyor for item transport, High Speed Sorter for item routing, Put to Light for packing accuracy, ASRS Carousel/Lift for inventory Security and Storage Optimization, Check Weight Scale for shipping accuracy, Automated Carton Erectors for package creation and Automated Carton Labeling. Subsequent to this presentation and their go-live in 2007, the MTN warehouse has scaled new heights.   So, I busted my old blog and hadn't been keeping up with it. Decided it would be easier on me to use software that I didn't maintain, so several months ago I signed up for a GWB account. You are a witness to procrastination at its finest!  I was remarking to my friend Abby that I hadn't written anything in ages, that I've typed a bunch in the last 5 years or so, but that the typing belonged to someone else as work product, was boring technical mumbo jumbo, or was only good before it spoiled, that project/job/technology/tweet based freshness window that us geeks have to deal with. In short, I just didn't feel like it. So forgive the rambling sentences and my grammatical failures, you have Abby to thank ;) On the technology front I've been working with WPF, WCF and a whole lot of other alphabet soup in terms of patterns. I'm starting to get spoiled on Visual Studio 2010, and may have made a mistake by evaluating the ultimate version. Because I'm a .NET geek and an outdoor geek, expect a hodgepodge. It's nearly Easter, which for the garden means a whole lot of things. I've already started getting seed out, and started working soil. It feels good to get real dirt on your hands.

• Need recommendation for transferring ASP.NET MVC skills to PHP

  I am looking to translate my skills in .NET to PHP - specifically in regards to ASP.NET MVC. At work I am currently using .NET MVC 2.0 on a variety of projects and thoroughly enjoy the platform. Specifically I enjoy the very minimal configuration required to get a project up and running (just create the project, define routes, and start coding), as well as the ability for controller actions to return different items (i.e. ActionResult, JsonResult). Another piece I really like is the way the view/model interaction can be handled. For example I like being able to call return View(model) and having a view page (.aspx) load and having the full model object available to the view, regardless of the model type. I'm looking for a PHP implementation of MVC that is the most similiar to what I am already familiar with. I don't anything apart from the MVC functionality. I've looked at Zend, Symfony, CodeIgniter, etc. and, while they look like they'll be fun to play with in the future, they provide much more functionality than I need. I'd prefer to write my own DAL, form helpers, delegate handlers, authentication/ACL pieces, etc. In short, I just need something to handle the routing and view interactions and will worry about the model implementation myself. Can someone please point me to some lightweight code that accomplishes or comes close to accomplishing my objectives above. Or, can someone identify just the portions of a larger framework that do the same (again, I'm not currently interested in implementing something on a big framework, just the MVC portion and want to implement the model portion myself as much as possible).
