  • Technologies and standards in a Kindle

    - by danke
I'm using the Kindle as an example of an embedded system to illustrate some points I'm making in a paper. Since I'm not an expert in all the technologies used, can those aware of them point them out. For example: the GUI is programmed in embedded Java (which is probably a bad choice) Whispernet is used for the wireless platform What are the libraries or underlying technologies and standards that this device uses?

  • Delphi 2010 and .net

    - by Kico Lobo
Hi, how is Delphi 2010 relationship with .net? I remember that not long ago you could only generate .net 1.1 code. And now, how is that? How legacy Delphi code (mostly 7) behave when compiled for the .net platform instead of Win32? Is it compatible?

  • Is Polyglot programming important?

    - by Kb
Trying to learn more about Polyglot programming. What is it exactly and is it important? Look like it is cross platform coding and interoperability across platforms... I found this article by Ted Neward (Thoughtworks) interesting.

  • Facebook graph api for PHP resources!

    - by kielie
Hi guys, I am creating a little flash game for the facebook platform, but I am finding it very difficult to get any decent documentation on the graph api and the PHP SDK, so if anyone has a decent resource for a beginner to go and learn the basics, I would appreciate it very much, as I am struggling to grasp the concept. Thanx!

  • Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

    - by Walter White
I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

  • Why was .NET called .NET?

    - by compie
I always wondered why Microsoft chose such a strange, search-engine-unfriendly name for such a great platform. Couldn't they have come up with something better? Apparently the codename was NGWS: Microsoft started development on the .NET Framework in the late 1990s originally under the name of Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS). [Wikipedia] Does anyone know why they chose the name .NET?

  • UI Code Level Patterns?

    - by DTS
Is there a book or some other online resource that covers common code-level UI patterns (not widgets/components per se) and idioms. I'm looking for a resource that goes into some depth on MVC, event models, delegates, etc. Something in a similar vein to the POSA series would be excellent. I'm looking for something that is as platform-agnostic as possible, but I'm not sure if that even IS possible.

  • What's the point of Mono on Windows

    - by Adam Haile
This may be a dumb question...but I was just looking into the Mono project and they have a section about installing Mono on Windows. But, since Windows obviously already has the .NET runtime can anyone tell me what exactly is the point of having Mono for Windows? Does it help with cross platform development or something?

  • MinGW/GCC Delay Loaded DLL equivalent?

    - by VoiDeD
Hello, I'm trying to port some old MSVC C++ code to MinGW/GCC. One problem is that the project relies heavily on the /DELAYLOAD option for functions that aren't always used, and where the proper dll is located at runtime. Is there such a similar option on MinGW/GCC? This code is targeting the windows platform.

  • Public code repository

    - by Andy White
Can anyone recommend a public code repository? A few friends and I are thinking of starting a few projects for iPhone, web, Android, etc., and it would be nice to have a public (internet) code repository to use that would work well on any platform (Mac, PC, Linux). Any type of repository is fine (SVN, CVS, Git, etc.). A few ideas are Sourceforge or Google Code. Any recommendations? Thanks

  • Which European conference is the best equivalent of OSCON?

    - by smci
Looking for a large European developer/software conference, open-source-friendly, programming-language-neutral, platform-neutral, vendor-neutral. Any recommendations? apparently there briefly used to be a Euro OSCON (2004-2006? what happened?) some good language/app-specific ones like EuroPython, EuroSciPy, DjangoCon European BarCamps seem kind of fragmented, esp. for an English-speaking audience anything bigger or better? If there isn't anything, I wonder if O'Reilly would resurrect Euro OSCON.
