• Two collections and a for loop. (Urgent help needed) Checking an object variable against an inputted

- by Elliott
Hi there, I'm relatively new to java, I'm certain the error is trivial. But can't for the life of me spot it. I have an end of term exam on monday and currently trying to get to grips with past papers! Anyway heregoes, in another method (ALGO_1) I search over elements of and check the value H_NAME equals a value entered in the main. When I attempt to run the code I get a null pointer exception, also upon trying to print (with System.out.println etc) the H_NAME value after each for loop in the snippet I also get a null statement returned to me. I am fairly certain that the collection is simply not storing the data gathered up by the Scanner. But then again when I check the collection size with size() it is about the right size. Either way I'm pretty lost and would appreciate the help. Main questions I guess to ask are: from the readBackground method is the data.add in the wrong place? is the snippet simply structured wrongly? oh and another point when I use System.out.println to check the Background object values name, starttime, increment etc they print out fine. Thanks in advance.(PS im guessing the formatting is terrible, apologies.) snippet of code: for(Hydro hd: hydros){ System.out.println(hd.H_NAME); for(Background back : backgs){ System.out.println(back.H_NAME); if(back.H_NAME.equals(hydroName)){ //get error here public static Collection<Background> readBackground(String url) throws IOException { URL u = new URL(url); InputStream is = u.openStream(); InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is); BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(isr); String line =""; Vector<Background> data = new Vector<Background>(); while((line = b.readLine())!= null){ Scanner s = new Scanner(line); String name = s.next(); double starttime = Double.parseDouble(s.next()); double increment = Double.parseDouble(s.next()); double sum = 0; double p = 0; double nterms = 0; while((s.hasNextDouble())){ p = Double.parseDouble(s.next()); nterms++; sum += p; } double pbmean = sum/nterms; Background SAMP = new Background(name, starttime, increment, pbmean); data.add(SAMP); } return data; } Edit/Delete Message

• (Pivot) tables generation

- by Yasir Arsanukaev
Hello. We use Excel VBA to load data using SQL, process it and generate (pivot) tables. I wonder if there any other decent alternatives. I've been thinking on PDF generation but not sure if there are handy tools to construct pivot tables. Important requirement is the ability to print data correctly, so that everything fits on the page(s). Thanks.

• UnicodeDecodeError when redirecting to file

- by zedoo
Hi, I run this snippet twice, in the ubuntu terminal, (encoding set to utf-8) once with ./test.py and then with ./test.py >out.txt: uni = u"\u001A\u0BC3\u1451\U0001D10C" print uni Without redirection it prints garbage. With redirection I get a UnicodeDecodeError. Can someone explain why I get the error only in the second case, or even better give a detailed explanation of what's going on behind the curtain in both cases?

• Optimizing list comprehension to find pairs of co-prime numbers

- by user3685422
Given A,B print the number of pairs (a,b) such that GCD(a,b)=1 and 1<=a<=A and 1<=b<=B. Here is my answer: return len([(x,y) for x in range(1,A+1) for y in range(1,B+1) if gcd(x,y) == 1]) My answer works fine for small ranges but takes enough time if the range is increased. such as 1 <= A <= 10^5 1 <= B <= 10^5 is there a better way to write this or can this be optimized?

• How to test unescaped s; as a whitespace

- by gleery
I use apache common lang to unescape a block of html text which contains , I want to filter out blocks that contains only whitespaces. But I can't test the as a whitespace. It's not in the normal whitespace list(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitespace_character), and I try to print its Hex form by calling Character.getNumericValue which return -1. &nbsp should be a whitespace,isn't? But How can I test it?

• how to get post content with groovy listening on a port?

- by Amir Raminfar
I wrote the following simple groovy code that handles a request. if (init) data = "" if (line.size() > 0) { data += "--> " + line + "\n" } else { println "HTTP/1.1 200 OK\n" println data println "----\n" return "success" } I then run it by doing groovy -l 8888 ServerTest.groovy However, it doesn't seem to print any POST data. I am testing it by doing curl -d "d=test" http://localhost:8888/ Does anybody know how to get that data in groovy?

I am trying to make an interactive shell script in perl. The only user input I can find is the following: $name = <STDIN>; print STDOUT "Hello $name\n"; But in this the user must always press enter for the changes to take effect. How can I get the program to proceed immediately after a button has been pressed?

• C++ problem with string stream istringstream

- by user69514
I am reading a file in the following format 1001 16000 300 12.50 2002 24000 360 10.50 3003 30000 300 9.50 where the items are: loan id, principal, months, interest rate. I'm not sure what it is that I am doing wrong with my input string stream, but I am not reading the values correctly because only the loan id is read correctly. Everything else is zero. Sorry this is a homework, but I just wanted to know if you could help me identify my error. if( inputstream.is_open() ){ /** print the results **/ cout << fixed << showpoint << setprecision(2); cout << "ID " << "\tPrincipal" << "\tDuration" << "\tInterest" << "\tPayment" <<"\tTotal Payment" << endl; cout << "---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------" << endl; /** assign line read while we haven't reached end of file **/ string line; istringstream instream; while( inputstream >> line ){ instream.clear(); instream.str(line); /** assing values **/ instream >> loanid >> principal >> duration >> interest; /** compute monthly payment **/ double ratem = interest / 1200.0; double expm = (1.0 + ratem); payment = (ratem * pow(expm, duration) * principal) / (pow(expm, duration) - 1.0); /** computer total payment **/ totalPayment = payment * duration; /** print out calculations **/ cout << loanid << "\t$" << principal <<"\t" << duration << "mo" << "\t" << interest << "\t$" << payment << "\t$" << totalPayment << endl; } }

However I got many of them printed out everytimes I clicked the mouse ...sometimes 5 e.g. mouseClicked mouseClicked mouseClicked mouseClicked mouseClicked Instead of just mouseClicked Why? public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent arg0) { System.out.println("mouseClicked"); }

• Python's cPickle deserialization from PHP?

- by Ciantic
Hi! I have to deserialize a dictionary in PHP that was serialized using cPickle in Python. In this specific case I probably could just regexp the wanted information, but is there a better way? Any extensions for PHP that would allow me to deserialize more natively the whole dictionary? Apparently it is serialized in Python like this: import cPickle as pickle data = { 'user_id' : 5 } pickled = pickle.dumps(data) print pickled Contents of such serialization cannot be pasted easily to here, because it contains binary data.
