• Sending USR2 to mongrel_rails sometimes results in an “Address already in use” on the restart

  We have a rolling-restart mode for our mongrel cluster that sends a USR2 signal to each running process. This works great, most of the time.   I have postfix and dovecot installed on CentOS 6 (linode) along with MySQL. • Static routing on a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND

  My home network setup looks like this: Both routers are TP-Link TL-WR1043ND routers. The basement router handles all devices in the house that are connected via cable, handing out addresses for the 10.89.49.0/24 network via DHCP. Wireless doesn’t really work from the basement, as the signal is too weak, so I have disabled it. To do WiFi, I have added a second (identical) router downstairs. On the WAN side it is assigned the 10.89.49.101 IP address from the basement router, and on its LAN it provides the 10.89.7.0/24 network. Basic internet access works flawlessly from any device this way. I am now facing the problem that I am not able to communicate (e.g. SSH) between all devices, wired or wireless. I am able to connect from a wireless device to a wired device, for example SSH-ing from 10.89.7.X to 10.89.49.Y, but it doesn’t work the other way round—despite the fact that I have added a static route to the basement router: Does anybody have any idea on how to solve it? Both routers have already been upgraded to use the most recent firmware from TP-Link.com (Build 110429), to no avail. Errata: I would like to stick with the official firmware, switching to something like DD-WRT or OpenWrt only as a last resort.

Problem is with EXIM process it can not shut down, but it can run. When I try to send Email from roundcube, horde or via smtp it is down. 25 port is down, I can not receive, or send mails. • Can a wifi AP act as a client, and a server at the same time?

  I feel this is SF worthy (as opposed to SU) as I go into a bit of detail on gateways/routing. Here's my ideal setup (if possible) -- there is a wifi network (lets call it bob's) with which I want access to, but I have a few other computers on my network which I want to keep behind a firewall. So I was thinking of buying a wireless access point so that I could set it up to connect to bob's network from the AP, and then from my server, connect to the AP via ethernet. So that's the first bit. Second part is that I want to have my own private wifi network off the back of this; can I then tell the AP to serve a new network called foobar. When I say private network, I mean that my server is actually a Debian linux install with routing configured (and I also do some QoS stuff on, etc). So ideally, I'd like all the clients on the private network to be behind the server in terms of routing. However, if the private clients connect to the server via wifi, then aren't they exposed to the "public" network? That is, if someone is savvy enough to scan for my IP range. Also, to do routing I'd need to connect two ethernet cables between the server and the AP (because you can't do routing/QoS on virtual devices) -- which isn't a problem really; but I'm not sure whether the AP will allow me to separate the public and private LANs. Or, as well as the AP, am I better getting a wifi-to-ethernet adapter for the server? I could use a wifi usb, but this can be tricky to set up on headless linux; plus the signal strength is a bit lousy. If this question is a bit vague/spurious in places, please comment and I will explain in more detail.

• iPod touch has extremely slow wifi, drops packets - only on my router

  I just purchased an iPod Touch. I am having a lot of trouble with its speeds on my Tenda W311R, but it has no speed problems on my neighbor's Netgear router. It will connect and authenticate to my network, but the Speed Test app from speedtest.net shows rates near 20-50 kbps. If I run the speed test immediately after powering the iPod on, it will get speeds of 10-20 Mbps, like it should - but the speeds slow down to the kbps range abut 10-15 seconds afterward. I get the same behavior with encryption and without encryption, and regardless of N, G, or B compatibility settings in the router. I've tried rebooting the iPod and resetting the network settings, but it's still slow. As far as I can tell, the heatsink on the processor is spinning, the power supply is on (obviously), and the green LED on the motherboard is on. I originally only had the bigger output plugged in to the motherboard (what I saw in a YouTube vid as well as the mobo instructions), but after doing some research, it said plug in the other ATX power supply. Which I did. And trying to power the computer results in nothing. No beeps on startup, no post, anyone have any ideas? Your ideas and help is greatly appreciated.

  I recently got my T500 with a very poor signal Wi-Fi, Thinkpad BGN, a Realtek chipset. I would like to replace my Wi-Fi card with either the Intel WiFi Link 5100 or 5300. However, I read somewhere that Lenovo specfically "whitelist" their Wi-Fi cards to only work with their laptops. I could not find any of the Intel Wi-Fi, moreover any Wi-Fi cards on the Lenovo site. So, I went to hunt around in Amazon and found several sellers. Plus what sort of card do I require? There is a difference between mini cards and the full sized card, though I do not know which one my laptop supports. The error I'm getting is a "broken pipe" error, but I feel I should first explain the context of my problem and what causes this error. It happens when trying to use any bash script containing a 'while read' loop in GNU Parallel. I have a basic bash script like this: #!/bin/bash # linkcheck.sh while read domain do host "$domain" done Assume that I want to pipe in a large list (250mb say). cat urllist | ./linkcheck.sh Running host command on 250mb worth of URLs is rather slow. To speed things up I want to break up the input into chunks before piping it and then run multiple jobs in parallel. GNU Parallel is capable of doing this. cat urllist | parallel --pipe -j0 parallel ./linkcheck.sh {} {} is substituted by the contents of urllist line-by-line. Assume that my systems default setup is capable of running 500ish jobs per instance of parallel. To get round this limitation we can parallelize Parallel itself: cat urllist | parallel -j10 --pipe parallel -j0 ./linkcheck.sh {} This will run 5000'ish jobs. It will also, sadly, cause the error "broken pipe" (bash FAQ). Yet the script starts to work if I remove the while read loop and take input directly from whatever is fed into {} e.g., #!/bin/bash # linkchecker.sh domain="$1" host "$1" Why will it not work with a while read loop? Is it safe to just turn off the SIGPIPE signal to stop the "broken pipe" message, or will that have side effects such as data corruption? Thanks for reading.

• Asterisk/FreePBX: Allow other Google Talk clients to ring when using motif module

  I've recently installed FreePBX to act as a link between a SIP soft phone and my Google Talk account. It was easy to set up and outbound calls work just fine, but I've run into two problems with inbound calls that I'm not sure how to resolve. I'm using an inbound route to forward all calls from Google to my soft phone. If the soft phone is not currently registered, Asterisk answers and immediately generates a fast-busy signal (reporting CHANUNAVAIL in the logs), and the call is lost. If the soft phone is registered, Asterisk "answers" the call before rining the soft phone, which means that other Google Talk clients never ring (since from their perspective someone has answered the call). For solving (1) seems like I could use the ChanIsAvail() function (or this answer) to prevent Asterisk from answering in the event that the phone isn't registered. However, I'm not sure what to do about (2), because the behavior I want is for Asterisk to not "answer" the call until I answer the call on the soft phone. How do I configure Asterisk (ideally within the FreePBX framework) such that I can continue to receive calls at other Google Talk clients in addition to forwarding them to a SIP phone?

• Sshfs is not working..

  Hi, When I run sshpass -p 'mypass' sshfs 'root'@'68.19.40.16':/ '/dir' -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no,debug It successfully mounts but it runs on foreground. When I run without 'debug' parameter, it doesn't mount at all. Server is ubuntu 8.04 Any ideas why? UPDATE: When I run the command as ROOT it does mount. • nginx does not use variables set in /etc/environment on system reboot, but does when restarted from shell

  I have a Rails app running on nginx/passenger. It restarts happily in a shell using sudo /etc/init.d/nginx stop|start|restart. But Passenger throws an error when the system is rebooted: "Missing the Rails #{version} gem". • Running SSIS packages from C#

  Most of the developers and DBAs know about two ways of deploying packages: You can deploy them to database server and run them using SQL Server Agent job or you can deploy the packages to file system and run them using dtexec.exe utility. Both approaches have their pros and cons. However I would like to show you that there is a third way (sort of) that is often overlooked, and it can give you capabilities the ‘traditional’ approaches can’t. I have been working for a few years with applications that run packages from host applications that are implemented in .NET. As you know, SSIS provides programming model that you can use to implement more flexible solutions. SSIS applications are usually thought to be batch oriented, with fairly rigid architecture and processing model, with fixed timeframes when the packages are executed to process data. It doesn’t to be the case, you don’t have to limit yourself to batch oriented architecture. I have very good experiences with service oriented architectures processing large amounts of data. These applications are more complex than what I would like to show here, but the principle stays the same: you can execute packages as a service, on ad-hoc basis. You can also implement and schedule various signals, HTTP calls, file drops, time schedules, Tibco messages and other to run the packages. You can implement event handler that will trigger execution of SSIS when a certain event occurs in StreamInsight stream. This post is just a small example of how you can use the API and other features to create a service that can run SSIS packages on demand. I thought it might be a good idea to implement a restful service that would listen to requests and execute appropriate actions. As it turns out, it is trivial in C#. The application is implemented as console application for the ease of debugging and running. In reality, you might want to implement the application as Windows service. This is the class where you put your logic, but to tell WebServiceHost how to use it, the class must implement an interface which declares methods to be used by the host. The interface itself must be ornamented with attribute ServiceContract. The packages are deployed to the file system. The path to the packages is configured in the application configuration file. This way, you can implement multiple services on the same machine, provided you also configure the URL for each instance appropriately. To run a package, you have to reference Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime namespace. This namespace is implemented in Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll which in my case was installed in the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies”. Once you have done it, you can create an instance of Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application as in line 18 in the above snippet. It may be a good idea to create the Application object in the constructor of the PackRunner class, to avoid necessity of recreating it each time the service is invoked. Then, in line 19 you see that an instance of Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Package is created. The method LoadPackage in its simplest form just takes package file name as the first parameter. Before you run the package, you can set its variables to certain values. This is a great way of configuring your packages without all the hassle with dtsConfig files. In the above code sample, variable “User:ExportRows” is set to value of the parameter “rows” of the method. Eventually, you execute the package. The method doesn’t throw exceptions, you have to test the result of execution yourself. If the execution wasn’t successful, you can examine collection of errors exposed by the package. These are the familiar errors you often see during development and debugging of the package. I you run the package from the code, you have opportunity to persist them or log them using your favourite logging framework. The package itself is very simple; it connects to my AdventureWorks database and saves number of rows specified in variable “User::ExportRows” to a file. You should know that before you run the package, you can change its connection strings, logging, events and many more. I attach solution with the test service, as well as a project with two test packages. To test the service, you have to run it and wait for the message saying that the host is started. Then, just type (or copy and paste) the below command to your browser. http://localhost:8011/runpackwithparams?package=%22ExportEmployees.dtsx%22&rows=12 When everything works fine, and you modified the package to point to your AdventureWorks database, you should see "OK” wrapped in xml: I stopped the database service to simulate invalid connection string situation. The output of the request is different now: And the service console window shows more information: As you see, implementing service oriented ETL framework is not a very difficult task. You have ability to configure the packages before you run them, you can implement logging that is consistent with the rest of your system. In application I have worked with we also have resource monitoring and execution control. We don’t allow to run more than certain number of packages to run simultaneously. This ensures we don’t strain the server and we use memory and CPUs efficiently. The attached zip file contains two projects. One is the package runner. • System hangs while rebooting on Debian...

  Hi, I have Debian (Kernel 2.6.26-2-686) installed on two computers. On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer. When i type reboot at the Linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System": Broadcast message from root@myname (tty1) (Sun Jan 17 11:23:26 2010) The system is going down for reboot NOW! INIT: Switching to runlevel: 6 INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal Saving system clock Stopping enhanced syslog: rsyslogd. Asking all remaining processes to terminate...done. Deconfiguring network interfaces...done. Cleaning up ifupdown.... Deactivating swap...done. [ 31.789103] Restarting System. _ Normally when the sytem is busy "" sign blinks but "" at the last line above does not blink which shows, the system hanged up. I tried all keys but the screen is still frozen at the same point. The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this restart-hanging problem. I have also disabled running the acpid script by running update-rc.d -f acpid remove but the problem still persists on the second computer. Any ideas to solve or get around this problem?

• How can I stream audio signals from various devices/computers to my home server?

  I currently have a headless home server set up (running Ubuntu 12.04 server edition) running a simple Apache HTTP server. The server is near an audio receiver, which controls a set of indoor and outdoor speakers in my home. Recently, my father purchased a Bluetooth adapter, which our various laptops and cellphones can connect to, outputting the music to the speakers. I was hoping to find a solution that worked over Wi-Fi, namely because it won't cost anything (I already have a server with an audio card), and it doesn't depend on Bluetooth. Is there any cross-platform (preferably free and open-source) solution that I can use which will allow me to stream audio to my home server, over my home network, from a wide variety of devices (laptops running Windows/Linux or cellphones running Android/BB/iOS)? I need something that works at least with Windows and Android. Also, just to clairfy, I want something that simply allows devices to connect to my server and output an audio signal without any action on the server end (since it's a server hidden away near my receiver). Any subsequent connection attempt should be dropped, so only one device can be in control of the stereo at once.

• Can I make two wireless routers communicate using the wireless?

  I want to make a setup like this: cable modem <-cable- wireless router 1 <-wireless- wireless router 2 in another room <-cables- PCs in another room Basically, I want to extend my network access across the house and then have a bunch of network jacks available for my office PCs. Right now, I have a cable modem going to a wireless router in one room and a PC with a wireless PCI card in it in the office on the other side of the house. I use internet connection sharing with the other PCs in the office. The problem is that ICS is flaky, especially when I switch to VPN on the Windows box to access files at work. I picked up a wireless USB adapter that I thought I could share among the PCs I work on but I'm not very happy with it so I'm going to return it (NDISwrapper support for it is poor). Is this possible? My wireless experience so far has been pretty straightforward so I have no idea what kind of hardware is available. I've looked at network extenders but those just look like repeaters for signal strength. I want wired network jacks in my office.

• Weird Apache Crash (with Dump) zend_hash_find (), libphp5.so

  To be honest I don't have experience working with Apache. I'm just putting the best of my intentions on solving this and don't know if I'm making it right. So any help will be greatly appreciated. We have a php page wich is throwing the following message in the browser: Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data. The logs from /var/log/httpd doesn't seem to help because It seems that the Apache is unable to write any information. So the exception or error is preventing the writing (maybe ocurring in some stage of the process that makes impossible to log?). I've read about the procedure to make dumps of the apache, and here we have the content: Reading symbols from /lib64/libgpg-error.so.0...(no debugging symbols found)...done. Loaded symbols for /lib64/libgpg-error.so.0 Reading symbols from /usr/lib64/php/modules/zip.so...(no debugging symbols found)...done. I've been looking at Google but found nothing related. Can somebody please help? Is there any step that I need to accomplish to know more? Thanks a lot, as always!
