  • Good Books About Scaling Up Databases/Servers/etc.?

    I've applied for an internship at a startup company that expects its user base to grow by a large factor in a small amount of time, and so part of their project is to scale everything up so that they're ready: handling more/larger requests efficiently, handling server failures, load balancing, getting more JavaScript to run faster on the client computers, etc. Part of my job will also be figuring out what to do, so it's not obvious what my exact task will be at the moment. I was told that I should start reading up a little more about this so that I would have a little bit of an idea of what to do. What are some good books for me to read on this topic? I have a little bit of experience with the usage of MySQL (and also a little experience with web development), but in no way do I claim any knowledge on the internal workings of databases or distributed systems, so I might need readings more on the introductory side.

  • Render public html's for dynamic banners in Rails ?

    Hi, I would like to render specific HTML snippets for displaying banners, because each banner has a different nature (some images, some flash, etc). Every banner file is under app/public/banners/. I tried many ways, like: render :file => "/banners/somebanner.html" But it can't locate the file, because rails looks under app/views. Any Ideas ?     Neither a Tomcat nor SSI pro, I'm trying to use a provided template that relies on them heavily for look and feel. The Tomcat page says that SSI is disabled by default. It's installation instructions talk about renaming a Catalina.jar file, which I cannot find in $GRAILS_HOME. How can I configure the bundled Tomcat instance for SSI?

  • Best Way to Archive Digital Photos and Avoid Duplicate File Names

    This problem pertains to archiving of digital pictures taken from multiple cameras. Answers here covered the general topic of the-mechanics-of-backups: How do you archive digital photos and videos ? I however face another problem. Having multiple cameras (canon) and multiple SD cards (mixed and matched at random), I have found that different SD cards have different photos with the same file name, i.e. two different photos each name IMG_3141.JPG. Additionally, for better or worse, I've backed up the files to multiple places and need to consolidate my backups. I want to eliminate duplicates, but not clobber files. The only way I can think of is to append the code (md5 or sha1) to the file name, i.e. IMG_3141.JPG becomes IMG_3141_KT229QZ31415926ASDF.JPG, then sorting them out Any better ways?   • Why does Visual Studio 2010 throw this error with Boost 1.42.0?

    I'm trying to recompile application, that compiles fine with warning level 4 in visual studio 2005 and visual studio 2008. Since the errors (look below) are coming from std:tr1, I'm thinking there's some conflict, but not sure how to fix. My first thought was to remove all references to boost, such as but then I get an error that it can't find format method.     I need to display an image in a Django form. My Django form is quite simple - a single text input field. When I initialise my Django form in a view, I would like to pass the image path as a parameter, and the form when rendered in the template displays the image. "Earlier in the trial, experts testified that someone conducted the keyword searches on a desktop computer in the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents. The searches were found in a portion of the computer's hard drive that indicated they had been deleted, Detective Sandra Osborne of the Orange County Sheriff's Office testified Wednesday in Anthony's capital murder trial." I know some of the questions here on Super User address third party software that can used for this kind of thing, but I'm more interested in how this data can be seen after deletion, where it resides on the hard drive, etc. I find the whole topic intriguing, so any additional insight is welcome.

The question is how can I get the modelformset_factory to use the AuthorForm (which I plan to customize later) instead of making a default Author form?

  • Can I completely remove the Windows DNS in favour of BIND9 in an AD network?

    I would like to remove the DNS feature of Windows Domain Controllers and point the DNS servers to our BIND9 servers. I know it's possible to setup coexistence but this requires a number of extra Windows DNS Servers equals to the number of Domain Controllers in the network. Active Directory expects the _msdcs zone and other things like _tcp, _udp; etc. The main question is: how to make BIND9 takes care of all this AD specific data? And with dynamic updating to make AD even more happier. Thanks, PS: Making BIND9 points to the Windows DNS Servers to resolve the Active Directory specific zones isn't an option. We already do this... EDIT: As today, I'm running without Windows DNS. I'm writing up a guide on how to do this, and I'll update this topic.

  • django-oembed and tinymce

    I've got django-oembed working fine, e.g. a YouTube URL on a line by itself gets transformed to the correct embed code. Then I added a limited TinyMCE text area. Now that URL on a line by itself gets surrounded in opening and closing html p tags. This breaks oembed - now the URL itself is displayed in the template rather than the embed code. Any reliable fixes or workarounds for this problem?

  • How to restore default iPod playlists on Amarok?

    I wanted to "reset" the collection on my iPod and ended up accidentally deleting, through Amarok, all the playlists, including the default ones like "Most Played" and "Highest Rated". Since these are dynamic playlists with a special meaning for iPod, I don't think creating new, normal playlists with the same name will bring their special behavior back. How do I restore them with the same dynamic functionality? Is there a way to do that on Amarok? Rhythmbox? GTKPod? Command line? P.S.: not entirely sure what the policy about iPod questions are, but this one in particular seems to me to be very computer-related because, although it's about interfacing with a device, everything has to be done on my computer, using standard PC libraries/programs, etc. If it's still off-topic, please point me to where I could post it.

What if I invoke 10 DAO methods that all use the same Hibernatetemplate and I invoke them one after another? Every method runs within its own transaction? It's not effective is not it?
