• How do you encourage yourself to program?

  Imagine that you were given a studio or a room in 7-star hotel which is located by the sea, a luxury car and free massage service. All that were given on the condition that you should write your best code every day. You should come with new ideas and try and try again and again.. Will you accept that? Now come back to me please, the question is: what do you do to encourage youself to like programming and to write more of best practices and to come with new ideas? For example, if you were writing code and you get bored, in this case what do you do? Another example is, what do you do when some days are passed and you did not write anything? How do you recover and get back to work with high energy?

  I'm interested in real experience and personal answers not just those standard worn out "benefits of contributing to open source" that we all memorized by heart by now. I've met many people who contribute to open source project and almost never did this topic come up: why did they contribute to this open source project. So, if you've contributed to an open source project before in any way, can you please pause for a second and try to remember what really made you decide to contribute to that particular project. Was it a random decision, was it because you were bored, was it because the company you worked for was already using it and you contributed as part of your job, was it because the project was too big you wanted to get contracts, or the project was too small you wanted to build it, or because your prof or co-worker asked you to help with his open source project, or..... To substantiate your reasons, please mention the project name and rate your involvement (heavy, occasional, light, once).

• How can I programmatically block user input for a given time?

  As a person working in computer science working offline to avoid facebook and thelike is not always (meaning hardly ever) possible for me since I mostly have to be online to work. I have tried leechblock and similar things but the problem becomes that at some point I start making systems for myself to hack, which is kind of pointless if oyu have root. I would very much like to try out the method described here. (Short version: reboot your PC every time finish a task or get bored with it) Unlike for the author of this blog my work is mainly done not in screen sessions but in IDEs ans other not-so-fast-to-start-up stuff, meaning a full reboot including loading all my programs will take its time. So, the question is: How can I block all user input and preferrably blank the screen for a given amount of time? The idea would then be to have a keyboard shortcut to activate the script/program (which would probably also have to have root i guess?)

Now I've been offered a new job working with client-side mobile technologies involving Javascript and HTML5 as well as some very minor native iPhone and Android programming. So, question: If you've ever made this kind of jump, did you find find Javascript/HTML too lame after you've been working on "hard-core" C++ and server systems? Did you find it challenging? • What language should an 11-year old start with to learn game programming?

  I have a 11-year old son who wants to do game programming. I've started him on C++ (C++11) and he's learned iostreams, looping, functions, logic and flow control. I'm using the standard library and no memory management at all. But I would like to ask: What language would you suggest for a pre-teen (Python, ...)? What books would you suggest? We looked at one book that was just for console ASCII games. I liked the C++ that it taught but I think he'll get bored without some graphics at some point.

• How can one combat boredom?

  I'm not sure if it is a right place to ask about it but I think it is worth to try. I am PHP programer with near 5 years professional experience. I passed Zend certificates (PHP4, PHP5, ZF), I know almost everything what I should know. And the problem is, that I am bored. I think that I should change technology. It will give me a boost. It will give me satisfaction from work again. But I'm not sure what to choose. Java, .Net, C++ or maybe something other? I am really open to any technology. Have you ever had similar problem? Basically if I write: foreach (ListItem item in items) { item.Text = "something"; } I want it to appear in the correct colours like it does in my Visual Studio or here at stack*overflow*. • Nvidia GeForce 410m

  I have a Lenovo v570 with a Nvidia GeForce 410m with cuda. It came with windows 7 and everything works well. However I just got bored of windows 7 and I'm yearning for xp. I installed xp and got everything to work except the Nvidia driver. In their website there is only the windows 7 nvidia driver available. I searched http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/26388 and got a driver for the 400m series. I tried the software and it didn't work, message << THIS GRAPHICS DRIVER COULD NOT FIND COMPATIBLE GRAPHICS HARDWARE . I also tried : http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/29285-v29610-windows-xp-32bit-nvidia/ This time the error message 'REQUIRED FILES ARE MISSING' Any help will be grateful.

• Converting encoding of multiple files with iconv (Mac OS)?

  I need to convert a whole bunch of files from Windows-1251 to UTF-8. After doing 10 of them by hand in BBEdit, I got bored ;-) I found out that there is an iconv CL tool. I tried this: iconv -f WINDOWS-1251 -t UTF-8 inputfile However it seems that iconv just outputs the converted text instead of writing it to file. Also, there is no outputfile parameter for it. How do I write the changes back to original files? Thanks. Edit: Please note, that inputfile value is actually *.txt, so the solution has to work with that.

• iPod Nano 5th gen Album Artwork

  I am an album artwork fan. I just got all of these brand new alternate artwork covers for my albums and singles. Eventually, i got bored of them, and i wanted the original ones back. So i got on iTunes, and changed the original album covers to the primary covers. I synced my ipod, but it still showed the new covers on it, not the originals. I figured a temporary way to fix it, by deleting the new covers i got, making the originals the default. There has to be an easier way, though. p.s. this also works in vice-versa. I will add the new covers, but before i exit, i change the primary cover to the original. When i change it back to the new one, my iPod will still only show the original Thanks for helping!

  I'm a 19 year old computer geek who was recently exposed to Linux. I know quite a bit of it now and would like to do something substantial with it. I've visited websites like openhatch where you can get started on opensource projects but I'm more interested in something Linux-specific like hosting a website or tracking some important operation. Maybe running a script that will give me data on something important. I don't know. I'm essentially bored and I want to put my knowledge and love of Linux to good use. The site is also an office, so it includes windows dc, windows ad, exchange, sql, file sharing, development app servers and other pcs. In addition to office (internal) things, there are both test and prod environments consisting of a web server-app server-sql stack. There is also ftp service open to public. I consider: dmz1 - web server - exchange edge - ftp dmz2 - app server - sql for app server internal - dc and ad - exchange hub and transport - internal file sharing - sql for internal use - app servers for internal use - pcs public - dmz1, only web, ftp and smtp public - dmz2 not possible public - internal not possible dmz1 - dmz2 is possible from web servers to app servers by using http or ajp dmz1 - internal is only possible for exchange, otherwise not possible dmz2 - internal not possible Does this sound ok ? Any other recommendations ? It will be configured using either MS ISA or Jupiter SSG. Thank you.

• How to revert to "last known good configuration"

  Hi Guys. I failed to install ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI, for some reason it's showing me the root partion is not defined. I'm bored to fight with it so I just removed ubuntu in windows. However this installation made my original Windows XP cripple, a normal boot will end up with a blue screen, error code 7E, I'm still able to boot with the 'last known good configuration' tho. My understanding is booting like this will recover things and I'm supposed to be good when reboot, while this is not the case for me, I have to choose the 'boot from last known good configuration' each and every time to work around the blue screen. Could you suggest how could I resolve this? I feel it's foolish having to waste 10 more seconds each time starting the OS.

• Laptop is Switching DNS Servers

  Ok sometime ago I changed my ip address to a static one because I was bored and I wanted to learn more about static ips. I am running windows xp. My laptop works find on the network that i set up a static ip address, but when i go to another network, the incorrect dns servers are being used. When I enter the option to get a dns server automatically, the internet connection works but only for a short time. After that the dns servers resets to the one i entered manually on a previous network. I did this by going to Network Connection-Right Click Local Area Connection and go to properties-Select TCP/IP - then click the Properties button. At this point i am given the option to Obtain an ip address or obtain and address automatically. My question is how do I resolve this problem of the dns server reseting to the previous one.

• How to make the jump from consumer support to enterprise support?

  I am currently a high level consumer break/fix technician responsible for about 300-400 repairs a month. I am good at my job, but bored, and I want to move into the enterprise side of my company, dealing with Server 2008 R2 and exchange and switches and routers that cost more than I make in a month. How do I make this transition? Whats the best thing to learn first? Is there a standard trajectory for making this leap from consumer to business? I am full time employed, so going back to school is not a great option, but I have no life, so spending my nights and weekends reading and practicing is totally within my realm. I am basically overwhelmed by the number of things to learn, and looking for any advice you may have on the best way to proceed. PS - I apologize if this is a not quite the right forum for this, I know its not a technical question exactly, but I also know the sorts of people I want to answer this question are reading this website.

• How can I force my browser to search Google in English?

  I'm too bored of seeing sites like Google and such show up in my native language, I would rather like them to be in English. Yet, I have to explicitly change the URL to .com and en and that kind of parameters in order for them to show up in English. Can I somehow force this? So, how is Google configured? However, it is set to English on the site itself so it has to be my browser: Then, how does my browser land up on non-english pages, like Google? It usually shows up in non-English when I'm performing a search, which uses: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:instantFieldTrialGroupParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s When performing a search, it fills these variables in with non-english values. How can I tell my browser to fill these in with the English values? My Google Chrome options give preference to English:

• Can we change control of two keys on keyboard?

  I'm using Eliteook 8440p hp machine and two keys on my keyboard aren't working v and b. laptop keyboard replace will take 2-3 days, and I can't stop my office work. I'm bored of using On screen keyboard to write v and b. I don't have any portable USb keyoard to connect to laptop right now. I'm thinking I'm not using Pg up and Pg Down button at all, is there any software or trick which can make it possible so that If i press Pg Up it will write v on page and Pg Down will write b.
