  • dnsmasq local network works for some but hostnames are not resolving for others

    - by prggmr
I have set up a local network and it seems that some of us can use it properly while others can't. The problem seems to be that the local hostnames I setup don't get resolved for everyone. To overview how the network is setup: I am running an Ubuntu 10.01 server using dnsmasq, this server is setup to act as our primary DNS server, configured via our router. dnsmasq is configured using the options of domain-needed bogus-priv I use the /etc/hosts file to determain the hostnames 192.168.1.10 ra.xsi 192.168.1.10 test.xsi From my machine: If I dig the hostnames they resolve properly ; <<>> DiG 9.4.3-P1 <<>> ra.xsi ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 61671 ;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;ra.xsi. • nokia cell phone not accepting IP from dnsmasq dhcp server

    - by samix
Hello, I having problem connecting a NOkia cell phone to my home wifi network. The wifi network is provided by a wireless card in a machine running Debian Testing and 2.6.26-2-686 kernel. The cars is D-Link DWL-G520 working in ap mode and has WPA encryption enabled. The wireless network is provided by hostapd using madwifi driver. Windows and Mac machines work properly with this wifi network. When I try to get the Nokia phone to connect to the wifi network, I get these lines in my dnsmasq log (to see lines without wrapping, here is the pastebin link for convenience - http://pastebin.com/m466c8fd2): Oct 27 13:25:21 red hostapd: ath0: STA 11:22:33:44:55:66 IEEE 802.11: disassociated Oct 27 13:25:21 red hostapd: ath0: STA 11:22:33:44:55:66 IEEE 802.11: associated Oct 27 13:25:21 red hostapd: ath0: STA 11:22:33:44:55:66 RADIUS: starting accounting session 4AE664FA-00000036 Oct 27 13:25:21 red hostapd: ath0: STA 11:22:33:44:55:66 WPA: pairwise key handshake completed (WPA) Oct 27 13:25:21 red hostapd: ath0: STA 11:22:33:44:55:66 WPA: group key handshake completed (WPA) Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 Available DHCP range: 192.168.5.150 -- 192.168.5.199 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 DHCPDISCOVER(ath0) 0.0.0.0 11:22:33:44:55:66 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 DHCPOFFER(ath0) 192.168.5.21 11:22:33:44:55:66 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 requested options: 12:hostname, 6:dns-server, 15:domain-name, Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 requested options: 1:netmask, 3:router, 28:broadcast, 120:sip-server Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 tags: known, ath0 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 next server: 192.168.5.1 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 1 option: 53:message-type 02 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 54:server-identifier 192.168.5.1 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 51:lease-time 00:00:46:50 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 58:T1 00:00:23:28 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 59:T2 00:00:3d:86 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 1:netmask 255.255.255.0 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 28:broadcast 192.168.5.255 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 3:router 192.168.5.1 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 4 option: 6:dns-server 192.168.5.1 Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 8 option: 15:domain-name home.pvt Oct 27 13:25:21 red dnsmasq-dhcp[11451]: 3875439214 sent size: 3 option: 12:hostname NokiaCellPhone Anybody know the problem might be? If I switch off dnsmasq dhcp queries logging, i.e. if I decrease the verbosity of the log, all I see are two lines of DHCPDISCOVER(ath0) and DHCPOFFER(ath0) repeatedly in the log with no acceptance by the cell phone. It appears as though the phone is not accepting the dhcp offer. However, if I give the phone a static IP address in its configuration, it works properly on the wifi network. So it appears as though the problem is dhcp related. Hints? Suggestions? Installed stuff: $ dpkg -l dnsmasq hostap* | grep ^i ii dnsmasq 2.50-1 A small caching DNS proxy and DHCP/TFTP server ii dnsmasq-base 2.50-1 A small caching DNS proxy and DHCP/TFTP server ii hostapd 1:0.6.9-3 user space IEEE 802.11 AP and IEEE 802.1X/WPA/ Thanks. • DNSMASQ configuration

    - by sean
I am using DNSmasq, OpenDNS and DYNDNS. DYNDNS is for my FTP site, and I am using OPEN DNS to filter porn from my kids itouch/ipad. However, I would like a few computers to have the capability to bypass openDNS, and pass through to a fast DNS server like google or similar. I would also like to fowrard all traffice from DYNDNS to my FTP server. Any ideas? This is what I have thus far.. strict-order dhcp-mac=filter,00:25:64:DB:A8:8A dhcp-option=net:filter,6,8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 Its not working thus far, can someone help me accomplish what I want to do?

  • With dnsmasq as the DNS server, 'dig' and 'ping' succeed while 'nslookup' fails

I installed dnsmasq on a machine of mine (It's a Kubuntu 12.04 LTS), backed only by /etc/hosts (no connection to the Internet until later). Now, if I dig mymachine, I get 192.168.0.1, but if I try to nslookup mymachine, I get: >> connection timed out; no servers could be reached Tried also nslookup mymachine.mynicedomain.org - didn't work either. pinging (Edit:) succeeds. This happens both on the server machine itself and on other machines on the network. How can I the DNS lookups to work? What problem is preventing nslookup from succeeding? • dnsmasq acts as the DHCP server for selected nodes overriding the existing DHCP server on the same LAN?

    - by user183394
I am trying to set up a small "lab" at home. Like many modern homes, I have a regular DSL service which comes with a 2Wire 3600HGV router, which acts also as a DHCP server. Since I would like to PXE boot a few computers in my "lab" The 2Wire is inflexible to adjustments that I want to do I have used dnsmasq at work so I would like to use dnsmasq as the DHCP server for the few nodes in my "lab" if feasible. In the dnsmasq man page, there is the following: [...] -K, --dhcp-authoritative (IPv4 only) Should be set when dnsmasq is definitely the only DHCP server on a network. It changes the behaviour from strict RFC compliance so that DHCP requests on unknown leases from unknown hosts are not ignored. This allows new hosts to get a lease without a tedious timeout under all circumstances. It also allows dnsmasq to rebuild its lease database without each client needing to reacquire a lease, if the database is lost. [...] As far as I know, the ISC DHCP server can use the following to do what I would like to accomplish: authoritative; [...] subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { host nb0 { # only give DHCP information to this computer: hardware ethernet e8:9a:8f:17:70:42; fixed-address 192.168.1.10; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option routers 192.168.1.254; option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.254; # Non-essential DHCP options filename "/pxelinux.0"; } [...] But I much prefer dnsmasq's "all-in-one-ness". My question: do I have to couple the -K option with something else? As shown in the example above, the ISC DHCP server requires the mac addresses of managed nodes to be explicitly specified. Does dnsmasq have something similar? FYI, the machine on which I plan to run dnsmasq runs CentOS 6.3 64bit. It has a statically assigned IP address: 192.168.1.3.

  • Get OpenVPN clients names to resolve through dnsmasq

    - by Fake Name
I have a PFSense box running as an OpenVPN server. There are several remote devices that connect through the VPN (as tap devices). The VPN stuff is working, I can access the remote hardware by looking up the IP assigned to each device on the PFSense router. What I'd like is to have it so I can resolve the remote hardware addresses via DNS while on the local network. Note that this is only local-network - remote-device (they're backup boxes). I don't need to have the remote devices resolve using the local DNS forwarding agent. I have the rest of the devices on the network that need to be accessible via DNS report their name during the DHCP process. However, the IP assignment for OpenVPN tap clients, while it is dynamic (which is why I need DNS), does not seem to use the local DHCP server. How can I have my openvpn server add information for it's clients to the dnsmask resolver? Is this setup even reasonable (I'm not familiar with openVPN at all)?

  • precise dns problems after upgrading from lucid

    - by Jazzist
I am having DNS problems since upgrading to Precise from Lucid yesterday. DNS sometimes works but is very slow. These problems are just like others are having but I'm wondering if someone can help as I have slightly different specifics. I have read this "I really don’t want a local resolver, how can I turn it off? To turn off dnsmasq in Network Manager, you need to edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment the “dns=dnsmasq” line (put a # in front of it) then do a “sudo restart network-manager”." I do not have this line to comment. Checking in Synaptic Package Manager reveals that dnsmasq isn't install (dnsmasq-base is). Editing / creating connections using network manager GUI (and specifying DNS servers) doesn't help; ubuntu is not respecting user GUI set DNS servers. Should these GUI tools not work? "I use static IP configuration, where should I put my DNS configuration? The DNS configuration for a static interface should go as “dns-nameservers”, “dns-search” and “dns-domain” entries added to the interface in /etc/network/interfaces" Are any examples of this available? My /etc/network/interfaces is extremely sparse. For now I have edited /etc/resolv.conf replacing nameserver 127.0.0.1 with that of my DNS server (my broadband router), but I don't know how long this fix will last before the file is overwritten by this new system (dnsmasq?).

  • How to configure a static wildcard subdomain with dnsmasq.

    - by Prody
I have a network behind a NAT with a few machines. The machines are: router - NAT, dnsmasq, forwarding - directly connected to the inet server - which runs ssh, www and some other stuff clients - which do stuff on server I also have mydomain.com. server.mydomain.com is pointing to my connection's IP (single IP), which is the router, which forwards ports to server. Server, has a httpd running, which serves different sites based on vhosts. So I have site1.server.mydomain.com, site2.. The problem is that all the traffic is going thru the router, and when I check logs I always see the router's IP for everything (so it's hard to see who is running the script with the while(1)). I would just ServerAlias site1.server.local, but most of the sites have a root URL saved somewhere on top of which other URLs are built, so I can't do that. The solution for me would be telling dnsmasq somehow to answer to *.mydomain.com with server's IP. Is this possible somehow?

  • How do I make dnsmasq serve IP addresses via IPoIB?

    - by Matt
I have a cluster farm that I'm setting up. The nodes (computers in the farm) are connected via ethernet & IP over Infiniband. I'm needing to netboot the nodes and thought dnsmasq would fit well as it provides all the features including support for DHCP over IB and it works great for our ethernet setup. However, I can't seem to get it to provide IP addresses to the infiniband adaptors on the nodes. Each node is running an Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS. The dnsmasq server is running on ubuntu server 12.04LTS and has the following test config: dhcp-authoritative domain-needed bogus-priv expand-hosts no-hosts domain=local dhcp-range=eth0,10.0.0.10,10.0.0.255,12h dhcp-option=eth0,3,10.0.0.1 dhcp-range=ib0,10.1.1.10,10.1.1.255,12h dhcp-option=ib0,3,10.1.1.1 log-queries log-dhcp IPoIB works between nodes when configured statically but not with dhcp. On the nodes the file /etc/network/interfaces contains auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto ib0 iface ib0 inet dhcp #iface ib0 inet static #address 10.1.1.5 #netmask 255.0.0.0 up echo connected >`find /sys -name mode | grep ib0` Is there something I need to do on the client or server end to make this work?

  • How to configure dnsmasq to forward multiple DNS servers?

    - by xiaoyi
I'm now using public DNS over VPN to avoid some DNS pollution in China. But this come with a price that I can't take advantage of CDN. Is there a way to configure dnsmasq and let it query both DNS servers, both public one and ISP one, and return the IP with a lower metric? I knew it could be done by using server=/domain/server directive to assign a DNS server for a certain domain, but the problem is there are hundreds of them. So I have to figure out something generic. Thanks in advance.

  • OpenVPN Push DNS Not Working Correctly On Windows

    - by woodsbw
I currently have OpenVPN server setup on an Ubuntu machine, as well as DNSMasq. I am wanting to push DNS to the client (road warrior setup.) I had the push "dhcp-option DNS x.x.x.x" where x.x.x.x was an open OpenDNS server, for testing, and everything was working when I connected from my Windows client But now that I have DNSMasq setup, and I changed the "dhcp-option DNS x.x.x.x" to the DNSMasq server, but when they client connects it still receives the old, OpenDNS DNS server IP. I'm at a bit of a loss here, I have tried flushing DNS on the client, rebooting the server, and I even grep'd the entire server to see if the OpenDNS IP was in some other config I was missing...it wasn't. One other note, when connect to the VPN and explicitly run nslookup against against the DNSMasq IP, the addresses resolve correctly, so it isn't a DNSMasq issue.

  • Android device unable to obtain ip address connecting to AP created with Hostapd

    - by user114392
I have a wired internet connection that works behind an authenticated proxy server. I followed the steps mentioned here and managed to create a hotspot which my google nexus 7 detects. However, it seems stuck at "obtaining an ip address" and is not able to connect to the internet. I initially received the following error message when running the script in the terminal: dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 127.0.0.1: Address already in use [fail] I figured it is because of a conflict with the network manager, I commented out the "dns=dnsmasq" line in the nm configuration file. After a network-manager restart, the first error doesn't show up but I get the following: Configuration file: /etc/hostapd.conf Failed to create interface mon.wlan0: -23 (Too many open files in system) Try to remove and re-create mon.wlan0 In both cases, however, the hotspot is created and is detected by my android device. only that it cannot "obtain an ip address" and connect to it. Is it because my eth0 connects via a proxy server? Or could there be something wrong with the dnsmasq config? Any help would be appreciated.

  • VirtualBox Ubuntu Server with DNS

    - by Boris Karl Schlein
I just want to have a local server inside my VirtualBox that offers dns functionality like www.example.local = 127.0.0.1 . Host: Ubuntu 11.10, Guest: Ubuntu 10.10 On my server I can already ping www.example.local - so I configured my virtual host correctly. Question is, how can I address www.example.local from outside my VirtualBox? I searched Google and askubuntu and found dnsmasq. I installed dnsmasq on my server and followed all steps on help.ubuntu. On my host system I've set 192.168.178.91 to the list of dns servers (192.168.178.91 is the IP address of my local server which uses a bridged network adapter). Thing is, I still cannot ping (or connect to) my example.local virtual host. It gives me an unknown host response. How can I set up my DNS server correctly?

  • Virtual DNS recommended setup...

    - by luison
Hi. We are new to virtualization which we are setting up with Proxmox VE (OpenVZ + KVM). I am a bit lost about the recommended DNS forwarder config specially in the OpenVZ (Virtuosso type) of enviroiment. Our intention was to have a small dnsmasq running in one of the VM acting as backup DHCP server and serving our in-office local addresses (and PCs) by an additional resolve.conf file which dnsmasq supports, but I've read that all VM should share DNS pointing to the host machine in which case it would make more sense having it there. My problem is that I would like to have as least as possible apps in the host so a reinstall of the environment (porxmox ve) and a machine restore can be as quick as possible. Does anyone have a similar setup? Does it make sense to have the 1st virtual machine running the local dns forwarder? Also... dnsmasq seems to want to have root permissions when running on an OpenVZ container... are there any work arrounds anyone knows for that.

  • Using JuJu with private Openstack cloud deployment?

    - by user76054
I'm seeing a number of problems trying to use JuJu with our internally deployed Openstack cloud. Most of this appears to be centered around DNS host resolution as well as the need to deal with our company's internal HTTP proxies. Our Openstack deployment relies upon an unroutable 172.16.0.0/12 block of addresses for VLAN allocation to each project (tenant) hosted on our internal cloud. User's have the option of assigning one or more floating addresses to instances, allocated from a block of routable addresses on our internal companies LAN. Currently, Openstack doesn't register instance names with anything other than the DNSMASQ service running on the cloud controller. As such, there's no way to resolve this address through our internal DNS hierarchy (this issue has already been reported as Bug #945505). As such, even though I can bootstrap my JuJu server node, I can't connect to it with the JuJu client, since it can't resolve the local (private) network name. I am able to ssh to the node, once I've assigned it an internally routable (i.e. floating) address. Which leads to the next issue. Next, to install software on an instance running in our cloud, it must have our internal proxy address defined - either in the apt.conf file or via environment variables. Unfortunately, when bootstrapping the server node, there's no provision to pass this info into a instance via JuJu environment.yaml file (if this is even the best way to handle this issue). As a result, the bootstrap node is unable to install the required packages. I'm assuming (dangerous, I know) that the way that I've deployed Openstack in our internal environment is probably not unique. Has anyone else encountered these issues? And more importantly, are work arounds available? Regards, Ross

  • Dnsmasq offering IP via DHCP, but nobody is accepting

    - by Matt
As clients connect the logs light up with DHCPDISCOVER(wlan0) and DHCPOFFER(wlan0) but the IPs being offered are not being accepted. Currently dnsmasq offers IPs on eth1 which works flawlessly. It seems to be just wlan0 that poses this problem for me today. ifconfig of wlan0: wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa inet addr:10.0.0.2 Bcast:10.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: fe80::baa3:86ff:fe70:796a/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1609 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1268 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:308739 (301.5 KiB) TX bytes:319185 (311.7 KiB)

  • How can i resolve all external addresses to internal address?

    - by Darian
I am currently setting up a Linux server for a WIFI access-point. When ever someone who is connected to the hotspot/access-point? tries to reload a page they get forced onto the one page. Note: this wont have internet access! ie: user tries accessing www.google.com = it returns 192.168.1.200 or example.domain I've read that "dnsmasq" can be used to redirect any external addresses to an internal address. but haven't had any luck. Anyone have an example of a config for "dnsmasq"? I have also read that this can be done through a proxy?

  • Wifi hotspot disconnected after some time

    - by Rohit Bansal
I am trying to use my Ubuntu system as Wifi Hotspot, but for some reason Hotspot get disconnected on its own. Searching for the solution, I found this help : Why is my ethernet connection connecting and disconnecting repeatedly? Reading through the above article I used the following command sudo killall dnsmasq as a result I manage to establish hotspot for around 5-10 sec before getting disconnected as against immediately.... • Debian 6 Internet connection sharing aka IP masquerade not working

    - by Rautamiekka
The problem: the computers [Xbox 360 and a Kubuntu 12.04.1 laptop] can't access Internet through a recently-installed desktopless Debian 6 laptop (which is wirelessly connected to a WLAN station) but addresses are successfully given by dnsmasq. The attempts: 1.1) /etc/dnsmaq.conf conffed according to http://wiki.debian.org/HowTo/dnsmasq: add lines interface=eth0 dhcp-range=192.168.0.50,192.168.0.150,255.255.255.0,12h 1.2) Follow http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rhel-fedora-linux-internet-connection-sharing-howto/ and use their script to setup iptables. 2) Follow the Ubuntu Internet Gateway Method (iptables) at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing recommended and which worked at Share internet in Linux. The Debian laptop was rebooted many times and between each attempt, with and without the script auto-executing via /etc/rc.local. While adding the iptables-restore command to that file I disabled the script.

  • How to Zone Forward to a List of Alternative Name Servers in pfSense 2.0.1

    - by Bob B.
I'm not sure if dnsmasq is involved in this process on pfSense or not. Before pfsense, we'd do this in BIND thusly: zone "firstpartner.com" { type forward; forwarders { 1.2.3.4; 5.6.7.8; w.x.y.z; }; I'm intentionally over-explaining this in the interests of specificity: We currently use dnsmasq to direct local queries for our primarydomain.com. Anything that doesn't match a host override entry in pfSense gets passed off to our external name servers, as defined elsewhere in pfSense. There are certain other zones which are not publicly accessible, let's call them firstpartner.com and secondpartner.com that each have various subdomains that their own name servers handle. I need a way to define a list of name server IPs for each domain zone (see BIND example above). Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • How to skip pushing the default gateway via DHCP in OpenWRT?

    - by francadaval
I have a router with OpenWRT that I want to resolve IP addressing with DHCP without setting a default gateway. I have added a DHCP-Option parameter with value 3,0.0.0.0 that is supposed to set the default gateway by DHCP. Instead, the router IP is defined as default gateway for DHCP connections. How can I set a null default gateway (0.0.0.0) for connections configuration by DHCP? As said in a comment: I want this router to service a VirtualBox network that doesn't set a default gateway via DHCP.
