  • Erase just the free space on my hard drive

    - by Patriot
    I'm about to give away an older computer with just the Windows XP operating system intact and all other programs uninstalled. However, upon peeking at the "free space" with software called "Recuva", I notice lots of deleted things that could be recoverable. Some of these include sensitive data files, pdfs, and other personal items that I would not want retrieved. I ran a program called "Eraser" to try and overwrite that data, but it failed to do an adequate job. I also tried to do the job with "Glary Utilities" but it failed too. Short of installing a new, very cheap hard drive and re-installing the bare bones operating system, I'm out of ideas. EDIT - WOW!!! I was not really expecting this many GREAT ideas. My next question is this. If I go the DBAN route and truely wipe the hard drive, then restore my disc image (I use Acronis True Image) will it also restore the free space data? Does imaging just copy readable data? I have an old image of when the OS was first installed.

    I want to install texlive on my fedora 16 laptop with the following procedure: # yum remove tex-* texlive-* # cat > /etc/yum.repos.d/texlive.repo <<EOF [texlive] name=texlive baseurl=http://jnovy.fedorapeople.org/texlive/2012/packages.f17/ enabled=1 gpgcheck=0 EOF # yum update; # yum install texlive after yum update, I notice that my laptop is fedora 16, while I used 2012/packages.fc17/ so I modify /etc/yum.repos.d/texlive.repo to use 2011/packages.fc16 and do yum update again however, there are many errors [root@kitty esolve]# yum update Loaded plugins: auto-update-debuginfo, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/leigh123linux/cinnamon/fedora-16/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found : http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/leigh123linux/cinnamon/fedora-16/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. • CGContextFillEllipseInRect: invalid context

    - by hakewake
    Hi all, when I launch my app, I keep getting this CGContextFillEllipseInRect: invalid context error. My app is simply to make the circle 'pinchable'. The debugger shows me this: [Session started at 2010-05-23 18:21:25 +0800.] 2010-05-23 18:21:27.140 Erase[8045:207] I'm being redrawn. • Weird behaviour with vector::erase and std::remove_if with end range different from vector.end()

    - by Edison Gustavo Muenz
    Hi, I need to remove elements from the middle of a std::vector. So I tried: struct IsEven { bool operator()(int ele) { return ele % 2 == 0; } }; int elements[] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}; std::vector<int> ints(elements, elements+6); std::vector<int>::iterator it = std::remove_if(ints.begin() + 2, ints.begin() + 4, IsEven()); ints.erase(it, ints.end()); After this I would expect that the ints vector have: [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]. In the debugger of Visual studio 2008, after the std::remove_if line, the elements of ints are modified, I'm guessing I'm into some sort of undefined behaviour here. So, how do I remove elements from a Range of a vector?

  • C# - Erase all property values from a class?

    - by John M
    In a C# Winforms (3.5) application I have added a class that contains many properties (get/set) used to stored values from a 12 form long process. After form 12 I would like wipe out all the property values in the storing class so that the next user won't accidentally record values when starting the process at form 1. Is it possible to erase/destroy/dispose of all property values in a class? My class looks like this: private static int battery; public int Battery { get { return storeInspectionValues.battery; } set { storeInspectionValues.battery = value; } }

  • Erase part of RenderTarget when drawing primitives?

    - by user1495173
    I'm creating a paint like application using XNA. I have a render target which acts as a canvas. When the user draws something I draw corresponding triangles using DrawUserPrimitives and triangle strips to make lines and other curves. I want to implement an eraser in the application, so that the user can erase the triangles from the texture. I've used OpenGL in the past and there I would just use a blend function like so: glBlendFunc(GL_ZERO, GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA); How would I do this in XNA? I tried setting the GraphicsDevice blend mode to AlphaBlend, Additive, etc.. but it did not work. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • C++ Set Erase Entry Question

    - by Wallace
    Hi. I encountered a problem here. I'm using C++ multiset. This is the test file. Score: 3-1 Ben Steven Score: 1-0 Ben Score: 0-0 Score: 1-1 Cole Score: 1-2 Ben I'm using while loop and ifstream (fin1) to read in from the test file above. multiset<string, less<string> > myset; while(!fin1.eof()) { fin1 >> scoreName; if(scoreName == "Score:") { //calculates number of matches played } else { goalCheck = scoreName.substr(1,1); if(goalCheck == "-") { string lGoal, rGoal; lGoal = scoreName.substr(0,1); rGoal = scoreName.substr(2,1); int leftGoal, rightGoal; leftGoal = atoi(lGoal.c_str()); rightGoal = atoi(rGoal.c_str()); if(leftGoal > rightGoal) //if team wins { //some computations } else if(leftGoal < rightGoal) //if team loses { //computations } else if(leftGoal == rightGoal) //if team draws { //computations } else { myset.insert(myset.begin(), scoreName); } } } I'm inserting all names into myset (regardless of wins/loses/draws) in my last else statement. But I only require the names of those matches who won/draw. Those names whose matches lost will not be included in myset. In the test file above, there's only one match that lost (1-2) and I wanted to remove "Ben". How can I do that? I tried to use myset.erase(), but I'm not sure how to get it point to Ben and remove it from myset. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to use Secure Erase and is it on the install CD?

    - by Mikey
    Supposedly there is some built in hard drive magic called "Secure Erase" which is wildly faster and more secure than "dd if=/dev/zero..." I am most excited about the speed increase. There seems to be a GUI for it as part of Parted Magic: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?81321-Secure-Erase-With-bootable-CD-USB-Linux..-Point-and-Click-Method Is there something like this for Ubuntu? Better yet, is there a way to actually issue this command "manually" like with smartctl or something?

  • Why is my /dev/random so slow when using dd?

    - by Mikey
    I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

  • What is an efficient way to erase substrings?

    - by Legend
    I have a long string and a set of <end-index, string> list like the following: long_sentence = "This is a long long long long sentence" indices = [[6, "is"], [8, "is a"], [18, "long"], [23, "long"]] An element 6, "is" indicates that 6 is the end index of the word "is" in the string. I want to get the following string in the end: >> print long_sentence This .... long ......... long sentence" I tried an approach like this: temp = long_sentence for i in indices: temp = temp[:int(i[0]) - len(i[1])] + '.'*(len(i[1])+1) + temp[i[0]+1:] While this seems to be working, it is taking exceptionally long time (more than 6 hours on 5000 strings inside a 300 MB file). Is there a way to speed this up?

  • OpenLayers eraseFeatures doesn't erase features from map screen.

    - by Jenny
    I'm using OpenLayers, and have a layer for my Map, and a single Vector Layer. In this vector layer, I am using the DrawFeature control to draw a square. I have a listener waiting for a feature to be added, and then deleting any existing features (I only want one square at a time), like so: polygonLayer.events.register("beforefeatureadded", feature, function(evt){ console.log("Clearing existing polygons"); console.log(polygonLayer.features.length); polygonLayer.destroyFeatures(); polygonLayer.redraw(); });//end attempt at events registration When I check my layer.features.size, I can see that it's always 1, just like I expect, but the squares on the screen are still displayed. Even when I call .redraw() on the layer, the squares are still there. Is there some extra step I'm missing? Edit: You can find my code here: http://pastie.org/909644 Edit: Just realized: If I draw a square from previously existing coordinates, I can clear it just fine. It seems to be just the squares drawn from the controller that are an issue?

  • resort on a std::vector vs std::insert

    - by Abruzzo Forte e Gentile
    I have a sorted std::vector of relative small size ( from 5 to 20 elements ). I used std::vector since the data is continuous so I have speed because of cache. On a specific point I need to remove an element from this vector. I have now a doubt: which is the fastest way to remove this value between the 2 options below? setting that element to 0 and call sort to reorder: this has complexity but elements are on the same cache line. call erase that will copy ( or memcpy who knows?? ) all elements after it of 1 place ( I need to investigate the behind scense of erase ). Do you know which one is faster? I think that the same approach could be thought about inserting a new element without hitting the max capacity of the vector. Regards AFG

  • How can I perform a masked erase in SDL2?

    - by Kvisle
    I'm trying to implement some shadow/lighting effects in my 2D-project, and I've concluded that if there is an easy way to perform a masked erase on an SDL_Texture, it would make the drawing operations quite cheap. Let's say I have a texture of the part of the level where light is not meant to be rendered. I also have a texture with my "light map"; I want to use this to just draw omni lights from my light sources. Then I want to use the first image to 'subtract' the portions of the light map that are not to be rendered on the final scene. Then I draw my "light map" texture on top of my scene, with additive blending enabled. This sounds like a good theory in my head, but I can't see any functions in the SDL2 API that let me do masked erase from a texture. Am I overlooking something? Does anything like this exist?

  • What is a safe way to dispose of personal info on an old laptop and what to do with said laptop?

    - by MikeN
    I have an old laptop someone gave me that only has 64Megs of RAM on it and runs WIN XP. I wanted to wipe the drive clean by installing Ubuntu Desktop to remove any shred of personal information on it and to make it useful to someone else. But the Ubuntu installer keeps failing because there is not enough RAM. Is there another version of Linux that would easily install on a 64 Megs of RAM system? 2nd part of question, what do I do with this old laptop? It doesn't have a battery anymore and has to be plugged into the wall to run. Assuming I can install a good Linux distro on it, who do I give it to? Salvation Army? I'm looking to just have it be useful to someone or some organization for spare parts or some basic computer usage.

  • Is there an alternative to /dev/urandom?

    - by altCognito
    Is there some faster way than /dev/[u]random? Sometimes, I need to do things like cat /dev/urandom /dev/sdb The random devices are "too" secure und unfortunately too slow for that. I know that there are wipe and similar tools for secure deletion, but I suppose there are also some on-board means to that in Linux.

  • OpenGl ES Eraser Tool

    Hi Everyone, I am trying to implement an OpenGL eraser tool. I am struggling with this. I was thinking of painting somehow over the previous changes to "clear" out the changes. I can't use the background color because it is not a pattern, not one solid color. Can you point me to the right direction on how to implement an eraser tool ? This is for the iPhone OS but that shouldn't matter. Thanks

  • deleting element objects of a std vector using erase : a) memory handling and b) better way?

    - by memC
    hi, I have a vec_A that stores instances of class A as: vec_A.push_back(A()); I want to remove some elements in the vector at a later stage and have two questions: a) The element is deleted as: vec_A.erase(iterator) Is there any additional code I need to add to make sure that there is no memory leak? . b) Assume that condition if(num <5) is if num is among a specific numberList. Given this, is there a better way to delete the elements of a vector than what I am illustrating below? #include<vector> #include<stdio.h> #include<iostream> class A { public: int getNumber(); A(int val); ~A(){}; private: int num; }; A::A(int val){ num = val; }; int A::getNumber(){ return num; }; int main(){ int i =0; int num; std::vector<A> vec_A; std::vector<A>::iterator iter; for ( i = 0; i < 10; i++){ vec_A.push_back(A(i)); } iter = vec_A.begin(); while(iter != vec_A.end()){ std::cout << "\n --------------------------"; std::cout << "\n Size before erase =" << vec_A.size(); num = iter->getNumber() ; std::cout << "\n num = "<<num; if (num < 5){ vec_A.erase(iter); } else{ iter++; } std::cout << "\n size after erase =" << vec_A.size(); } std::cout << "\nPress RETURN to continue..."; std::cin.get(); return 0; }

  • std::set<T>::erase(key). What if key isn't there?

    - by Armen Tsirunyan
    if I erase an element from an std::set and pass the key, not the iterator, and the key isn't in the set right now, will an exception be thrown? The thing is every second sentence in the MSDN documentation says: "this does blah blah, but it doesn't conform to the standard". So I need to know the standard behaviour. I just couldn't find it in the standard. Redirecting to the relevant clause will do as well. Thanks.

  • Problem with my whiteboard application

    - by swift
    I have to develop a whiteboard application in which both the local user and the remote user should be able to draw simultaneously, is this possible? If possible then any logic? I have already developed a code but in which i am not able to do this, when the remote user starts drawing the shape which i am drawing is being replaced by his shape and co-ordinates. This problem is only when both draw simultaneously. any idea guys? Here is my code class Paper extends JPanel implements MouseListener,MouseMotionListener,ActionListener { static BufferedImage image; int bpressed; Color color; Point start; Point end; Point mp; Button elipse=new Button("elipse");
