• 'cannot find -lboost_iostreams' while trying to install Deluge 1.3.3

  While trying to install deluge 1.3.3 (I need this specific version) I get an error. I install all the needed packages through sudo apt-get install g++ make python-all-dev python-all python-dbus \ python-gtk2 python-notify librsvg2-common python-xdg python-support \ subversion libboost-dev libboost-python-dev \ libboost-thread-dev libboost-date-time-dev libboost-filesystem-dev \ libssl-dev zlib1g-dev python-setuptools \ python-mako python-twisted-web python-chardet python-simplejson I then build it $ python setup.py build and $ sudo python setup.py install then I get a long list at the end of which there is the error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lboost_iostreams collect2: ld returned 1 exit status error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 Can you help me out with this?

• Switching from Java/Java EE career path to C POS path?

  I am a Java/Java EE Developer with about 3 years in this field. I like low-level programming so much... I favor back-end code over front-end. I've a knowledge in C and know little about C++. I got an offer to work with C in Point-of-Sale Payment terminals. I don't know much about how POS works (IDE/toolsets, etc). although I have a payment experience (ISO8583, etc...) I need you own opinion from Switching from the Java's High-level world to POS low-level world Although I love low-level world, but I am afraid from not being found what I seek.. I know programmers are not measured by the tools they use (including prog. langs.) but with their minds. I need your opinions of: Is programming POS terminals in C is an interesting thing, or I'll find myself doing usual code-writing job? (especially I am about to switch my whole career path). I find myself writing an elegant code in Java (like: Sobat http://code.google.com/p/sobat/) a code where I find myself in... So do I'll find the same thing in POS C? or It will all about Libraries that I'll call to finish my work?! • How to make Eclipse CDT's Linux GCC toolchain resolve C++ standard library headers?

  In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I installed the Eclipse CDT plugin and opened the new hello world project to just test everything out. When I was creating the project, I chose the only toolchain: "Linux GCC" When the project is created, however, it says that #include<iostream> #include<cstdlb> are unresolved. Thus, lines with cout and endl can't be used and it cannot find std. using namespace std; is also causing problems. How can I get my #include directives for standard library headers recognized, to support code using the std namespace?

• Still no keyboard after uninstalling Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 for the first time yesterday. After rebooting for the first time, I couldn't log in because I couldn't type anything using the keyboard. After rebooting, the keyboard failed completely; I can only automatically boot into Windows since I can't choose Ubuntu. Then the problem got worse. I had to use On-Screen keyboard to log in into Windows. Still no keyboard. When I rebooted, my laptop couldn't reboot at all! I had to hard reboot. I decided to uninstall the Ubuntu, using the Add/Remove program in the Control Panel. I uninstalled it successfully. My laptop automatically boots into Windows without Ubuntu option. However, I still don't have the keyboard! Please help me. Acer Aspire 4935 Windows 7 Ultimate Thanks.

• I'm building a theme for tumblr and the {HasPages} doesn't seem to work properly.

  I've put the HTML draft of the theme so far, with minor CSS edits. Currently I have all the block posts and everything else that's essential to a tumblr theme but I can't seem to get the {HasPages} block to work properly. I've tested it on a different tumblr, also. There are pages created and I already have provided some basic CSS for it just in case. But there isn't anything showing up. Has anyone has this problem and if so, is there a solution I'm missing? • Why My Adsense Account is not accepted

  I have created a blog on blogger few days ago and created two blog entries on it. when i try creating AdSense account with blog's address it does not accept the application due to PageType. i have searched around on the net and found that its probably due to duplicate or insufficient content on the blog but either of my blog entry is more than 2,000 words and i have literally typed 80 percent of its content with only few code blocks copied from other sites. • No C++ option after install Eclipse CDT

  I used terminal to install eclipse with jdk7, and now I want incorporate c/c++ development, so I installed a compiler (gcc 4.7) and and eclipse cdt plugin from the terminal: sudo apt-get install eclipse-cdt But when I restarted eclipse and tried to change the perspective, there was no c++ option I cannot even create a new c++ project. Someone suggested that I do "Install New Software" and choose the cdt from the hard drive. If this is what I should do, where does terminal install its files to?

• Has anyone been able to convert a site's media content from flash to html5?

  I'm looking to convert a site from Flash based video to HTML5, the current video uses time marks to display slides (kind of like how youtube has ads on their videos). But the difference between Youtube and my site is that it doesn't show up inside the video, the slides are displayed next to the video. Is there any way I can accomplish this with HTML5? Or do I have to use Javascript for this? If this isn't clear enough, please let me know.

  I am a little experienced developer having approximately 5 years experience in PHP and somewhat less in Java, C# and trying to learn some Python nowadays. Since the start of my career as a programmer I have been told every now and then by fellow programmers that programming is suitable for a few early years of a career (most of them take it as 5 years) and that one must change the direction after it. The reason they present include headaches and pressures associated with programming. They also say that programmers are less social and don't usually like to give time to their families, etc. and especially "Oh come on, you can not do programming your entire life!" I am somewhat confused here and need to ask others about it. If I leave programming then what do I do?! I guess teaching may be a good option in this case, but it will require to first earn a PhD degree perhaps. It may also be noteworthy that in my country (Pakistan) the life of a programmer is not very good in that normally they must give 2-3 extra hours in the office to accomplish urgent programming tasks. I have a sense that situation is somewhat similar in other countries and regions as well. Do you think it is fair advice to change career from programming to something else after spending 5 years in this field? UPDATE Oh wow... I never knew people can have 40+ years of experience in this field. I am both excited and amazed seeing that people are doing it since 1971... That means 15 years before my birth! It is nice to be able to talk to such experienced people, we don't get such a chance here in Pakistan.

• Why no more macro languages?

  In this answer to a previous question of mine about scripting languages suitability as shells, DigitalRoss identifies the difference between the macro languages and the "parsed typed" languages in terms of string treatment as the main reason that scripting languages are not suitable for shell purposes. Macro languages include nroff and m4 for example. What are the design decisions (or compromises) needed to create a macro programming language? And why are most of the mainstream languages parsed rather than macro? This very similar question (and the accepted answer) covers fairly well why the parsed typed languages, take C for example, suffer from the use of macros. I believe my question here covers different grounds: Macro languages or those working on a textual level are not wholly failures. Arguably, they include bash, Tcl and other shell languages. And they work in a specific niche such as shells as explained in my links above. Even m4 had a fairly long time of success, and some of the web template languages can be regarded as macro languages. It is quite possible that macros and parsed typing do not go well together and that is why macros "break" common languages. In the answer to the linked question, a macro like #define TWO 1+1 would have been covered by the common rules of the language rather than conflicting with those of the host language. And issues like "macros are not typed" and "code doesn't compile" are not relevant in the context of a language designed as untyped and interpreted with little concern for efficiency. The question about the design decisions needed to create a macro language pertain to a hobby project which I am currently working on on designing a new shell. Taking the previous question in context would clarify the difference between adding macros to a parsed language and my objective. I hope the clarification shows that the question linked doesn't cover this question, which is two parts: If I want to create a macro language (for a shell or a web template, for example), what limitations and compromises (and guidelines, if exist) need to be done? (Probably answerable by a link or reference) Why have no macro languages succeed in becoming mainstream except in particular niches? What makes typed languages successful in large programming, while "stringly-typed" languages succeed in shells and one-liner like environments?

• Offline MySQL installation (Using deb file and no internet connection)

  I downloaded MySQL's installation package and ran the following command after installing a fresh Ubuntu server. dpkg -i mysql-5.5.28-debian6.0-x86_64.deb It installed fine and then I tried starting up the server manually /opt/mysql/server-5.5/bin/mysqld And the following error came up /opt/mysql/server-5.5/bin/mysqld: error while loading shared libraries: libaio.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory How can I install that library in an offline way ? I have no means whatsoever to an internet connection from that server and I can't even relocate it to have internet connection temporarily ! Thank you.

• How to design application for scaling the application?

  I have one application which handles hardware events connected on the same computer's PCIe slots. The maximum number of PCIe slots on motherboard are two. I have utilized both slots. Now for scaling the application I need either more PCIe slots in same computer or I use another computer. So consider I am using another computer with same application and hardware connected on the PCIe Slots. Now my problem is that I want to design application over it which can access both computers hardware devices and does the process on it. • 127.0.0.1:9051 doesnt work after apache, mysql, php installation?

  I have installed apache2, mysql, and php and now it doesnt let Vidalia run on localhost. i tried to change the TCP connection (controlport) to any other ip 192.168.0.40 and tried to change the default port 9051 to any other but that doesnt work. I thought apache is running so i used this command sudo service apache2 stop but that still doesnt work. So now when i type 127.0.0.1:9051 in browser it says and if i type only type 127.0.0.1 after stopping the apapche2 service with the command mentioned above it says unable to connect I am not sure what to do now Help!

• Consoles in Ubuntu and automatic upgrade

  So I recently discovered that ubuntu is simultaneously running 6 consoles in addition to the GUI that everybody uses, which can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 ... +F6 and then the default GUI with Ctrl+Alt+F7. What use can these consoles have when I can just open a terminal in the GUI mode? Also, why is having consoles like this advantageous for computer users; wouldn't a GUI be much more simplistic? Also, running the console told me that I was running a development version of Ubuntu Quantal which is version 12.10. The login screen (correctly?) says that I'm running 12.04 LTS. • Where do I get the source code to customize Unity?

  So one of the main reasons I migrated to Ubuntu 12.04 from Windows 7 was to be able to have more control over my system due to the flexibility and customizability of a Linux operating system. However, with Ubuntu I do not feel as if I am as in control as I can be. What I mean to say is, where are the source codes and everything for all of this that I can edit on my machine. For example, suppose I want to position my dock on the left to be on the right without wanting to install any new software. I simply want to see the GUI files and reposition it myself. • Installing software on an offline Ubuntu server

  Assuming that I have a server with Ubuntu server newly installed on it. I was thinking of installing the very same version on Virtual Box (Or any other virtualization software), connect it to the internet and use apt-get to only download the packages for upgrading the system and the new software such as (tomcat7, openjdk6-default-headless..etc). Then copy the downloaded packages from the archive folder to the offline server's archive folder through a USB stick. So now the virtual system won't actually be upgraded nor have any new software installed. But would running the very same apt-get commands on the offline system without the download directive -d be executed without issues ? *EDIT:*This needs to be as simple as possible because I'll have to write a guide for our client to do this on his own and so it won't be acceptable to require deep Linux knowledge to do this.

  Have you come across a super programmer? What identifies him or her as such, compared to "normal" experienced/great programmers? Also. how do you deal with a person in your team who believes he is a super programmer? Both in case he actually is or if he isn't? Edit: Interesting inputs all round, thanks. A few things can be gleaned: A few definitions emerged. Disregarding too localised definitions (that identified the authors or their acquaintance as super programmers), I liked a couple definitions: Thorbjørn's definition: a person who does the equivalent of a good team consistently for a long time. Free Electron, linked from Henry's answer. A very productive person, of exceptional abilities. The explanation is a good read. A Free Electron can do anything when it comes to code. They can write a complete application from scratch, learn a language in a weekend, and, most importantly, they can dive into a tremendous pile of spaghetti code, make sense of it, and actually getting it working. You can build an entire businesses around a Free Electron. They’re that good. Contrasting with the last definition, is the point linked to by James about the myth of the genius programmer (video). The same idea is expressed as egoless programming in rwong's comment. They present opposite opinions as whether to optimise for such a unique programmer or for a team. These definitions are definitely different, so I would appreciate it if you have an input as to which is better. Or add your own if you want of course, though it would help to say why it is different from those.
