• Suggestion for software to control internet

  I need to implement a gateway that will allow me to control the access to the internet of a network made up of a about half a dozen of workstations. My main obejectives are the following: 1- Monitoring of traffic 2- Logging of traffic 3- Access control - block websites (mainly adult) and certian traffic(example torrents) 4- Possibly cache content 5- Easy management interface 6- Preferable free and opensource Serverfault users can you please suggest from your vast experience which software you think is the best to suit my needs?   AJAX autocomplete is fairly simple to implement. However, I wonder how to handle smart tag suggestion like this on SO. To clarify the difference between autocomplete and suggestion: autocomplete: foo [foobar, foobaz] suggestion: foo [barfoo, foobar, foobaz], or even better, with 'did you mean' feature: [barfoo, foobar, foobaz, fobar, fobaz] I suppose I need some full text search in tags (all letters indexed, not just words). There would be no problem to do it witch regex or other patterns for limited number of tags (even client side). But how to implement this feature for big number of tags? Is there any particular reason (besides URL) the tags on SO are dash separated? What about Unicode characters in tags? I store the tags in the table with the following columns: id, tagname. My SQL query returns objects with following fields: id, tagname, count

I have been using EC2 and S3 and it is becoming really expensive due to the bandwidth cost. Especially, people downloding contents from S3. I have looked at Peer1 and other few companies. I am not sure why they don't list their price on their website for their colocation service. They force you to chat with them and waste your time.

• Suggestion to change my Laptop RAM DDR3

  My Vaio VPCEA1BGN has Memory Type: DDR3 [2GB] PC3-10600 DDR3 [1GB] PC3-8500, DDR3 (non-ECC). There is no extra free slot now. I am planning to change one ram to 4GB. which one RAM i should remove now. I am still confused over the ECC types. Any suggestion while i am buying the ram?. I am looking into Corsair or Transcend.   Hi, i would like to now how can i get the suggestion when i do a \cite in emacs-auctex. The minibuffer tells me when i do C-c [ that "No valid bibliography in this document, and no default available". So how can i set this default?, i have a separated file with my bibtex references that is call by a master document, and i want the suggestion for any of the other files included.

• Frustration with superuser.com user interface (please migrate this to "meta")

  Can someone please migrate this question to "meta" for me? I'm unable to post there while I wait for OpenID to fix my password problems. Thanks. I'm having problems with superuser.com's interface -- when I provide an answer to a question, sometimes the buttons get locked and then I find out that the question was migrated. Usually I can go back and copy-and-paste my answer at whatever site it goes to, but on occasion my answer is lost and I have to re-type it. This is very time-consuming, and makes it quite frustrating to use the system. In addition, I find that I'm wasting a lot of time dealing with having to re-register on the other sites. My suggestion is to not de-activate the "Submit answer" button but to just forward that along to the migrated site automatically, thus ensuring that answers that people put a lot of effort into don't get lost. • Execute current UITextField autocorrect suggestion when another button is pressed

  I am implementing chat in my application, very similar to the iPhone's built-in Messages app. I have a UITextField next to a button. The user types something into the text field, and very often the text field suggests various autocorrections. In the built-in Messages app, tapping the Send button will cause the currently visible autocorrection suggestion to execute. I am seeking this behavior in my application, but haven't been able to find anything. Does anyone know of a way to programmatically execute the currently visible autocorrection/autocomplete suggestion of a UITextField when a completely separate control is activated? It's obviously possible somehow.

  Hello Stackoverflow Team, This is just a suggestion to you. In the first place i must say that you guys are doing a great job. I suggest that you build into the forum system a mail notifier(to notify users whenever there is a move/deletion of a post with the reason of the move/deletion) so that whenever you move or removed someone's post then he can be notified about the move, so that we don't spend time looking for posts that are removed. I think by so doing the number of duplicate posts and mistakes from users can be minimized. The reason is i spent hours searching through the posts to locate my posts that you have re/moved. That is why i was a little bit upset. Sorry if here is the wrong place to post my suggestion. Point me to the right place. Thanks for your work.

• Typing filename in standard open file dialog (Windows 7) - file name suggestion

  When you use standard windows open file dialog and start typing it puts files whose name starts with what you type to drop down list. But on another pc with same Windows 7 it also puts first of them into input box in which you type - like FF does with URLS, allowing you to immediately press Enter (without pressing 'Down' to select file). I don't know why this behavior is different, but I want suggested file name shown in input box. How could it be achieved? Thanks.

• Bandwidth Suggestion

  I have been asked to analyze the bandwidth usage of a company and make a recommendation for upgrading their Internet connection(s). Here is the layout 3 DLS lines so it is 3x(6 Down, 1 Up Each) into a load balancer out to the office's network. 30 VOIP phones run on a T1 (1.5 Down, 1.5 Up) The users at the company are heavily uploading. It is my suspicion that the issue in slowdown is being cause by multiple people uploading and others not being able to get requests out for even simple http requests. My initial idea is to get them a fiber line with a 10 down and 10 up. What do others think on this plan? Will that be enough to host their network traffic? What do I do about the VOIP line afterward? The fiber is expensive and I know the T1 does a great job for their VOIP so I do not want to suggest a DSL line because I know it may not be sufficient. I would also like to save them some money if I can. Maybe even get a faster fiber line and forgo the T1. Though I know their load balance/switch can only handle 20MB/S throughput. Looking for some confirmation/suggestions on my plan. I am planning on going in to get some real diagnostic numbers. Any suggestions on software to use for that? Preferably Windows software.

P5B-MX Memory: 2 Gb VideoCard: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT HDD: 80GB + 250GB both IDE Operating System: Windows 7 32bit Please give me some advice what to improve in my System. I mainly used it for Graphic Design (eg, Photoshop, Cinema4d, Illustrator, Flash). I was planning to increase my Memory adding 2 GB more, Pushing it to something like 4GB in total. But just found out that recently that I already have 2x2GB installed and should be 4GB in total. When I looked at the properties of my computer, It said "Installed Memory 2GB". I wonder why is that happening? Is the other ram broken?.. I never the computer casing since I bought. so I didn't realize that I already have 2 x 2gb ram. what can you advice. Thanks!

• Build suggestion for mini itx server [on hold]

  I am looking to create a home server and since there does not seem to be a nice ready made one to purchase, i thought of building a mini itx one. I am not familiar with the best hardware/case to pick and therefore i thought i would ask for your experience. I will most probably install a simple linux distro, probably Debian and most probably without a desktop environment as well. Therefore, I am not looking for the best graphics card, though a decent one is preferred for sure. I would say that the most important thing is that the case/hardware play well with each other and the machine has decent specs ( i think something like 8gb RAM and 1TB hdd is most probably my most important things). I understand that this question can be closed as subjective, but it would be a great help for me if some of you guys who have been doing a similar build, can suggest something. I tried to find a stack exchange variant for the question, but it seems that this one more closely relates to the subject. But I will definitely understand it if people close it due to being subjective in nature. If you can maybe move it somewhere or so, please feel free to do so. Thank you for your time :)

• Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system.   I'm configuring a brand new HPC server and am interested in using SmartOS because of it's virtualization control and zfs features. Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? System Specs: 2x 8-core xeon 384 GB RAM 30 TB HDs with 2x512GB SSDs Uses: - zfs for serving data to different vms, and over the network; 1 SSD for L2ARC and 1 for ZIL - typically 1-2 ubuntu instances running R and custom C/C++ code My biggest concerns as a newbie to SmartOS and ZFS are: (1) will I get near-metal performance from ubuntu running on SmartOS if it is the only active vm? (2) how do I serve data from the global zfs pool to the containers and other network devices?

• Suggestion regarding pointing domains to a dedicated server.

  I recently got a dedicated server and I am still at a learning stage. So please bear with me. I wanted to have 3 domains pointed to my server, but initially I asked them the process to point me one and they responded with: Hello, I can set that rDNS for you. Please make sure the domain is pointed to our name servers at godaddy. They are: ns1.xxxxx.net ns2.xxxxx.net After this is done, please allow up to 24 hours for global propagation. Alternatively, we can host your DNS for you if you prefer. What is the domain you would like xx.xxx.xx.xx to resolve to? I then asked him to point one of my domains. They responded, Did you want us to host your dns for that domain or just an rDNS record? They also said, Hosting your DNS is a free service here. We can only do 1 domain per IP. IF you would like to purchase additional IPs, they are $1/IP per month. I personally dont want to host DNS myself. Neither mail server. I have a single IP so far. It will then start to get expensive if I want to host 25 from these guys. I am still in the trial period. Does this seem reasonable as far as pricing goes? If I want to have some one host DNS and mail server, this is getting super expensive. Email hosting from rackspace starts at $2 per mail address, but from then on, its the same if you want added features such as archiving etc; What would you suggest I do if I am on a shoe string budget but I also want to avoid hassle of doing it myself and I only have 3 domains so far and I would need few mail addresses for each of them.

• Linux filesystem suggestion for MySQL with a 100% SELECT workload

  I have a MySQL database that contains millions of rows per table and there are 9 tables in total. The database is fully populated, and all I am doing is reads i.e., there are no INSERTs or UPDATEs. Data is stored in MyISAM tables. Given this scenario, which linux file system would work best? Currently, I have xfs. But, I read somewhere that xfs has horrible read performance. Is that true?
