• Should you use "internal abbreviations" in code comments?

  Should you use "internal abbreviations/slang" inside comments, that is, abbreviations and slang people outside the project could have trouble understanding, for instance, using something like //NYI instead of //Not Yet Implemented? There are advantages of this, such as there is less "code" to type (though you could use autocomplete on the abbreviations) and you can read something like NYE faster than something like Not Yet Implemented, assuming you are aware of the abbreviation and its (unabbreviated) meaning. Myself, I would be careful with this as long as it is not a project on which I for sure will be the only developer.

• How to discriminate commented code and documentation comments

  After using version control tools, it is no longer necessary to comment out old code. However, some team members still comment out old code. Therefore, I want to clean them up. I want to mark commented lines which are really comments / documentation, so that every time I do not need to re-read all commented regions. The unmarked lines left are new commented code. How do I achieve this? Any existing tools or need to write on my own? Similar concept: in git, we have 'partial commit' to select some lines to commit. However, the lines marked in 'partial commit' is valid once only.

  and i really need a code to remove the ending slash when a user put their link. for example i need them to put their url to grab their avatar, but in some cases they put their url ending with a slash (.com/) how can i remove that slash automatically? because when they put their url like that the avatar doesn't show i need them to end like this (.com) in order to show their avatar. • Annotate source code with diagrams as comments

  I write a lot of (primarily c++ and javascript) code that touches upon computational geometry and graphics and those kinds of topics, so I have found that visual diagrams have been an indispensable part of the process of solving problems. I have determined just now that "oh, wouldn't it just be fantastic if I could somehow attach a hand-drawn diagram to a piece of code as a comment", and this would allow me to come back to something I worked on, days, weeks, months earlier and far more quickly re-grok my algorithms. As a visual learner, I feel like this has the potential to improve my productivity with almost every type of programming because simple diagrams can help with understanding and reasoning about any type of non-trivial data structure. Graphs for example. During graph theory class at university I had only ever been able to truly comprehend the graph relationships that I could actually draw diagrammatical representations of. So... No IDE to my knowledge lets you save a picture as a comment to code. My thinking was that I or someone else could come up with some reasonably easy-to-use tool that can convert an image into a base64 binary string which I can then insert into my code. If the conversion/insertion process can be streamlined enough it would allow a far better connection between the diagram and the actual code, so I no longer need to chronographically search through my notebooks. Even more awesome: plugins for the IDEs to automatically parse out and display the image. There is absolutely nothing difficult about this from a theoretical point of view. My guess is that it would take some extra time for me to actually figure out how to extend my favorite IDEs and maintain these plugins, so I'd be totally happy with a sort of code post-processor which would do the same parsing out and rendering of the images and show them side by side with the code, inside of a browser or something. Since I'm a javascript programmer by trade. What do people think? Would anyone pay for this? I would.

• How to protect comments in Microsoft Word

  I have inserted personal comments into a Word document, which I am distributing to other authors. How do I send them the file without them being able to see my comments? I can "hide" comments by going to the Review ribbon and deselecting Comments under Show Markup, but then when I close and reopen the file, the comment reappears. The same thing happens when I choose Final instead of Final Showing Markup. Is there a way to make comments only visible to the author by whom they were written?

• Triple Monitor Stand Recommendations

  I've got two Acer X233Hbid 23" Widescreen LCD Monitors from new egg back last summer, each weigh 10.5lbs a piece I Want to Buy a third Acer 23" (closest I've found is the X235 on Newegg, weighs in at 11.5 lbs) , one of the new ATI video cards that will output to 3 displays, and then a monitor stand that will let me use them in portrait mode like the image below. I found the following: $260 - ERGOTRON 33-323-200 DS100 Triple-Monitor Desk Stand and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of setup and whether it would work for me or not.. • ATI Radeon Triple Monitor Setup

  I have a Dell XPS 8300, and its got an ATI Radeon HD6450 installed. When running Ubuntu 12.04 the triple monitors work flawlessly. I can change the default, turn them on/off etc ... The problem is Windows 7. It is behaving much like in this thread. I know the card supports three, as it WORKS PERFECTLY in the linux portion of my dual boot. Windows can "see" all three, but will only allow two. Is this a WIndows 7 / ATI compatibility issue, or is Windows 7 just stupid (rhetorical)? Had I not had a dual boot Linux box, I might have read the above thread and thought "damn, it just won't work". But I use three monitors every day on this card, so I know it works.... Just not with Windows.

• Triple monitor setting in Linux with USB-HDMI adapter

  I'm trying to set up a triple monitor desktop at my office using Fedora 17, but it seems impossible, let me explain the setting: Laptop ASUS K53SD with 2 graphic cards, Intel and nVidia (Screen controled by Intel card) 24" Full HD monitor connected to the HDMI output (controlled by Intel card) 23" Full HD monitor connected to an USB-HDMI adapter (via framebuffer in /dev/fb2, apparently) VGA output (not used) controlled by nVidia card First of all, the USB-HDMI adapter works perfectly, it gives me a green screen (which means the communication is OK) and I can make it work if I set up a single monitor setting via framebuffer in Xorg. • Manage Your WordPress Blog Comments from Your Windows Desktop

  Are you never more than a few steps away from your PC and want to keep up with comments on your blog?  Then here’s how you can stay on top of your WordPress comments right from your desktop. Wp-comment-notifier is a small free app for Windows that lets you easily view, approve, reply to, and delete comments from your WordPress blog.  Whether you have a free WordPress.com blog or are running WordPress on your own server, this tool can keep you connected to your comments.  Unfortunately it only lets you manage comments at one blog, so if manage multiple WordPress-powered sites you may find this a downside.  Otherwise, it works great and helps you stay on top of the conversation at your blog. Get notified with wp-comment-notifier Download the wp-comment-notifier (link below) and install as usual. Run it once it’s installed.  Enter your blog address, username, and password when prompted. Wp-comment-notifier will automatically setup your account and download recent comments. Finally, enter your blog’s name, and click Finish. Review Comments with wp-comment-notifier You can now review your comments directly by double-clicking the new WordPress icon in your system tray.  The window has 3 tabs…comments, pending, and spam.  Select a comment to reply, edit, spam, or delete it directly from your desktop. If you select Edit, then you can edit the HTML of the comment (including links) directly from within the notifier. You can approve or permanently delete any spam messages that are caught by your blog’s spam filter. Whenever new comments come in, you’ll see a tray popup letting you know how many comments are waiting to be approved or are in the spam folder.  Click the popup to open the editor. Now, you can directly approve that pending comment without going to your WordPress admin page.  When you’re done, just press Enter on your Keyboard to post the reply. Finally, you can change the settings from the Configuration link in the tray button or by clicking the gear button on the bottom of the review window.  You can change how often it checks for new comments, not to start the notifier at system startup, and edit your account information. • Iterating through facebook comments JSON object failing

  I tried the option of students.item["http://www.myurl.com"].comments.data.length. However, the item["http://www.myurl.com"] call is not working. If I take out the URL from JSON object and write the iterator with students.comments.data, it works. • Is writing comments inside methods not a good practice?

  A friend told me that writing comments inside methods is not good. He said that we should have comments only for the method definitions(javadocs) but not inside the method body. It seems he read in a book that having comments inside the code means there is a problem in the code. I don't quite understand his reasoning. I think writing comments inside the method body is good and it helps other developers to understand it better and faster. Please provide your comments.

• making apache and django add a trailing slash

  Hello. My /train directory is aliased to a script in httpd.conf by: WSGIScriptAlias /train /some-path/../django.wsgi And it works well, except for one problem. If a user goes to /train (with no trailing slash) it will not redirect him to /train/, but will just give him the right page. This is a problem because this way the relative links on this page lead to the wrong place when no trailing slash was used to access it. How can this be worked out? Thanks.

• Triple Boot - With storage partition

  I'm new to the multi-boot world, as i used to rely on virtualizing for running linux. Recently i moved to Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu, with a storage partition for all my files where both operating systems could access them. Is it possible, to have 1 partition for 7, another for XP, another for Ubuntu, and a separate partition where the OS's can access my files? so 4 partitions on my hdd. and if there's a better way to go about this (or if its not possible), please let me know! thanks

  Hi, I read a ton of pages and tried lots of solutions but none have worked yet! My problem is that: test.asifa.net/asifa-wp Redirects to: test.asifa.net/asifa-wp/ Which redirects to the first page. • What's the best way to re-install Ubuntu on my triple-boot system?

  I have a triple boot system with Windows, Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, installed in that order, plus a "Data" Partition that has all my data, what I want to do is remove the 11.04, because I haven't booted into it for over a month, and I am afraid if I try to do any updates it will bork the system... I would like to install a fresh copy of 11.04 and leave the rest of the system intact, what is the best way to do this?

  We are doing some refactoring to a 20 years old legacy codebase, and I'm having a discussion with my colleague about the comments format in the code (plsql, java). There is no a default format for comments, but in most cases people do something like this in the comment: // date (year, year-month, yyyy-mm-dd, dd/mm/yyyy), (author id, author name, author nickname) and comment the proposed format for future and past comments that I want is: // {yyyy-mm-dd}, unique_author_company_id, comment My colleague says that we only need the comment, and must reformat all past and future comments to this format: // comment My arguments: I say for maintenance reasons, it's important to know when and who did a change (even this information is in the SCM). The code is living, and for that reason has a history. Because without the change dates it's impossible to know when a change was introduced without open the SCM tool and search in the long object history. because the author is very important, a change of authors is more credible than a change of authory Agility reasons, no need to open and navigate through the SCM tool people would be more afraid to change something that someone did 15 years ago, than something that was recently created or changed. etc. My colleague's arguments: The history is in the SCM Developers must not be aware of the history of the code directly in the code Packages gets 15k lines long and unstructured comments make these packages harder to understand What do you think is the best approach? Or do you have a better approach to solve this problem?
