  • Windows Service Fails on Launch

    I'm trying to write a windows service. It installs fine, but fails when I run it with the following exception. I've searched for the string "MyNewProgramService", but I can't find any conversions that would throw this error. I've also added try/catch blocks to a bunch of code with custom exception handling without finding where this exception is occuring. I'm thinking it's somewhere in the auto-generated configuartion/setup code. Any ideas?   • Lock a mutex multiple times in the same thread

    Hi, I'm developing an application on an embedded linux OS (uClinux) and I need to be able to lock the mutex more than once (by the same thread). I have a mutex and a mutexattr defined and initialized as follows: pthread_mutexattr_t waiting_barcode_mutexattr; pthread_mutex_t waiting_barcode_mutex; pthread_mutexattr_init(&waiting_barcode_mutexattr); pthread_mutexattr_settype(&waiting_barcode_mutexattr, PTHREAD_MUTEX_RECURSIVE); pthread_mutex_init(&waiting_barcode_mutex, &waiting_barcode_mutexattr); But when I try to acquire the lock twice it blocks on the second lock: pthread_mutex_lock(&waiting_barcode_mutex); pthread_mutex_lock(&waiting_barcode_mutex); Am I initializing it wrong or is there a better way of accomplishing the same?   • Is there an automatic way to remove debugging methods for a release build?

    Note: This is an extension of an earlier question I asked here: Do additional function/method definitions increase a program's memory footprint? When I write a class, I usually end up writing several testing/debugging methods, used to make sure the class works as it should, or for printing data to help with debugging, or for unit testing, etc. Is there an easy/automatic way to make a release without these methods, or do I need to manually delete the extra code any time I want to compile a release version? I ask this question both from a C++ and a Java perspective. I'm using Code::Blocks and Eclipse as IDEs, if that plays into the answer somehow.

  • Login screen delay in CentOS 5.4 x64

    I was happily running my CentOS 5.4 before something bad happened that somehow corrupted the 'nautilus' package. It stopped me from using the default Gnome Desktop. Then I installed (using yum) the KDE and nautilus later on. Now, KDE is running perfectly with one exception that it takes around 10 minutes before showing up the Login Screen and only a blue screen with mouse pointer keeps showing during those 10 minutes.   • Where can I find an array of the (un)assigned Unicode code points for a particular block?

    At the moment, I'm writing these arrays by hand. For example, the Miscellaneous Mathematical Symbols-A block has an entry in hash like this: my %symbols = ( ... miscellaneous_mathematical_symbols_a => [(0x27C0..0x27CA), 0x27CC, (0x27D0..0x27EF)], ... ) The simpler, 'continuous' array miscellaneous_mathematical_symbols_a => [0x27C0..0x27EF] doesn't work because Unicode blocks have holes in them. For example, there's nothing at 0x27CB. Take a look at the code chart [PDF]. Writing these arrays by hand is tedious, error-prone and a bit fun. And I get the feeling that someone has already tackled this in Perl!

    In a spring mvc + spring core app, we have have a view layers, a facade, a service layer, a dao layer and a stored-proc based persistance layer. The service layer is unaware of the clients that utilitize its methods. Is it fine to propagate raw http requests into the service layer? Or is it bad practice and a violation of the loose coupling principles? If it is, then what's a clean workaround?

  • RSpec: in-depth differences between before(:all) and before(:each)

    Ok, so I've ran into a very strange issue, directly connected with before blocks. I'm doing a integration testing via Watir and RSpec. For a simple test to check if user can perform a login I'm creating a 'user' record in the db by means of factory_girl. So I put the following code: before(:each) do @user = Factory(:user) end if "should perform a login" do # do stuff end In do stuff I call a browser and see how the user tries to login. Unfortunately, somehow he cannot do that — "Username isn't valid". After some investigation I discovered that if I put the code for creating user in before(:all) block, everything magically works. How's that? What's the difference between :all and :each in this context? Also, If I put the code for creating user actually in the test body, it still doesn't work (i.e. user somehow isn't added to the DB or something).

    Hello, I have got four classes A, B, C and D. Class A has a member b of class B. Class B has a member c of class C. A has a member D* dpointer; This hierarchy has to be preserved (in fact this is a GUI with app, window, panel as A, B and C). Now B and C must use a method from *dpointer. Is there something more elegant than giving dpointer as a member of B and C ? Is it bad ?

    I am trying to redirect a page reading the url from the config file. However, when I try this: <script type="text/javascript"> <%string redirectUrl = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.AppSettings["RedirectURL"];%> window.parent.location.replace("<%=redirectUrl%>"); </script> the alligator tags <% % are Not being highlighted, and when I run I get the following error in the yellow screen: the controls collection cannot be modified because the control contains code blocks (i.e. <% ... %>). I've recently lost the folder structure after a merge operation gone-bad and would like to rename the recovered files according to the metadata.   • Can I use the emacs keyboard macro counter as a command prefix?

    I'm working on a project in emacs where I'd like to use a keyboard macro that changes slightly with each iteration. When I saw the keyboard macro counter in the manual, that looked like exactly what I needed - but as far as I can tell, that inserts an incrementing number into the current buffer. I want to use an incrementing number as a prefix to another command. For example, instead of inserting 3 into the buffer on the third execution of the macro, I'd like to be able to execute C-u 3 M-x my-command, followed by C-u 4 M-x my-command on the next iteration. Is there way to create a keyboard macro that does this? My specific task is "zipping" two blocks of text in the same buffer together, but even if there's an alternative way to do that specific thing, it'd be good to know the answer to the general question.

  • What's the big deal with brute force on hashes like MD5

    I just spent some time reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2768248/is-md5-really-that-bad (I highly recommend!). In it, it talks about hash collisions. Maybe I'm missing something here, but can't you just encrypt your password using, say, MD5 and then, say, SHA-1 (or any other, doesn't matter.) Wouldn't this increase the processing power required to brute-force the hash and reduce the possibility of collision?
