• Solaris 11 Technology Forums, NYC and Boston

  By now you're certainly aware that we released Solaris 11; I was on vacation during the launch so haven't had time to write any material related to the Solaris 11 installers, but will get to that soon.  Following onto the release, we're scheduling events in various locations around the world to talk about some of the key new features in Solaris 11 in more depth.  In the northeast US, we've scheduled technology forums in New York City on November 29, and Burlington, MA on November 30.  Click on those links to go to the detailed info and registration.  I'll be one of the speakers at both of them, so hope to see you there!

• Is acoustic fingerprinting too broad for one audio file only?

  We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start? We haven't started anything yet (on the development side) on this regard, so I want to get other opinion if this is pursuit is worth it or moot.

• robots.txt, how effective is it and how long does it take?

  We recently updated the site to a single page site using jQuery to slide between "pages". So we now have only index.php. When you search the company on engines such as Google, you get the site and a listing of its sub pages which now lead to outdated pages. Our plan doesn't allow us to edit the .htaccess and the old pages are .html docs so I cannot use PHP redirects either. So if I put in place a robots.txt telling the engines to not crawl beyond index.php, how effective will this be in preventing/removing crawled sub pages. And rough guess, how long before the search engines would update?

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

  I'm going to resign from my current employer (manufacturing sector), where I've been working for 2.6 years as an IT Application Developer. It's the first company I've worked in after I graduated from college. I don't have any problem with the company, I just realized that I want to learn new technologies and get out of my comfort zone and move to the IT industry. I already got a job offer from another company. My IT manager has told me that I am one of the best players in our group, that our group is enough to support our company and that it would be unacceptable if anyone of us resigned. They will counter the offer, but I'm set on leaving. My problem is that I don't know what are the essential dos and don'ts when resigning from a current employer. For example I'm expecting a lot of inquiries on why I'm leaving from people in the company, what do I need to say?

Also, if you are an MSDN subscriber you should be able to get a code from the MSDN site that will give you a free year (saving $49 US) but you will still need to submit some form of payment (e.g. credit or debit card) for verification purposes and so that they can automatically rebill you at the end of the subscription year (unless you’ve cancelled your account for some reason, of course). • Why do different browsers return different search results at Google and how can I prevent it?

  I am running some websites and am constantly checking keywords' rankings on google.com. And it is really important for us to see the organic search result without logging in or setting a specific location. Since this morning my colleague and I have checked the same ranking on both IE and firefox, the result surprisingly is very different (it almost feel like IE was logged in because the ranking is much higher, while in reality it is not). I have changed computer and the same problem occurred. It did not happen before. Can anyone tell me why is it?

• Best way to slice up a non rectangular image?

  I have the image below and need to create a rollover for each "piece" or arrow in the circle. Because the image isn't rectangular, it boggles how me how I'm going to do this without having badly overlapping pieces. As you can see from the image below, the slices will overlap each other (quite a bit), which will not be good for the rollover. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to accomplish this without resorting to Flash or HTML5? The majority of our site's users use dinosaur browsers that don't support HTML5. • How to do a login page for third party service without letting them sign on?

  We have a unique situation (at least for me, first time seeing this). We have a web form where accountants can fill in requests and that part is taken care of. But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. The process is crazy right now since we have to give our account login info to all people filing with us. So is there a way in PHP or any other solution where we can after that form on our website auto login with our information to that third party website in a way that our credentials are not visible to the users using the service?

• Browser Alert -- cannot download links using Internet Explorer

  Internet Explorer ( ie8, ie9 ) is mangling downloads from this blog. Links to files on this blog ( eg., dirstats ) are typically downloaded using browser:  R-click, SaveAs This works fine on Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  Internet Explorer is not handling the html reference to the file, and adds .html to the filename.   The file will be saved in an incorrect format.   Relatively harmless for a script file that is plain text, but binary files like obiaix.tar.gz , will be corrupted, and there is nothing you can do about it. "Don't get corrupted, get rid of cable  Internet Explorer, use firefox"  ( sorry, US TV advert reference ) The useful part of the compressed tar file is that you don't have to worry about Windows line-end characters corrupting the scripts, and you don't have to change execution permissions to get the scripts to work. dos2unix dirstats   chmod +x dirstats

• sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released.
