• Bummer | Visual Studio 2012 Error on Web Publish&ndash;July Update

  Always a bummer when you update a product and something stops working.  I am hoping it is an installation issue, but each time I go to run “Publish..” in my Web Application, the publish works, but Visual Studio 2012 crashes.  I just noticed this beginning after I ran the Visual Studio 2012 RC July Updates. This is the first time I have seen any IP agreement. Isn't it too stringent? or its standard practice across industry?

• Can't mount data DVD using 12.04

  I cannot mount a data DVD using Ubuntu 12.04. I can read the DVD using a different OS, so the DVD is not the problem. I can read other CDs using Ubuntu. • Oracle VM Virtualbox 4.0 released !

  Another great day for the Virtualbox development team. As is custom, they churn out new features and enhancements at a record pace. You can find the changelog here and you can download your version of 4.0 here. Have at it. A bunch of changes, visually a new management console, a new method to install with a base install and the extention pack (for the add-on drivers and extra features), a number of bugfixes, multi-monitor support for Oracle Solaris and Linux, it's a long list. • Sales tracker that allows complex queries?

  On a site, every click on a product should be registered by a sales tracker: price, type, etc. The sales tracker should provide an API so that complex queries can be performed, such as: Which products of a type "teapot" had a price below 20 EUR? Requirements: Recorded data should be available for querying no later than two hours after it has been recorded. For example, there are reports that Google Analytics may take up to 24h to update data. That is not acceptable. Querying doesn't need to be fast, but recording does (of course). Which sales tracker allows complex queries against collected data?

• As a Junior Software Engineer should I say that something has been done wrong if I feel so?

  I recently joined a company and it is my first job. When reading the code base, I felt that the code was not well written. It seemed to me that the code had most of the problems mentioned here and also seemed to have an Anemic Domain Model. There are no unit tests and they don't employ any code quality checking tools like findbugs or pmd. The problem I have is that the code is very difficult to understand. Maybe my conclusions are wrong because I am not that experienced. I need advice on whether to communicate the above facts to a superior or not. If I am to communicate, to whom(Tech Lead, Architect, Product Manager) and how? And if I do communicate will they take it badly since I'm a Junior and has no experience?

• As a software architect, am I supposed to focus that much on analysing the logs and fixing other's bugs?

  Since my graduation (late 2005) I was working for the same company as a c++ software engineer. A year ago I was promoted as a software architect but I have found myself involved more and more in qualification and fixing bugs, level 2 support. 50% of my time spent in Notepad++ analysing the software logs and trying to figure out what went wrong. 30% fixing other's bugs and the remaining (if any) reviewing developers spaghetti code. I started hating this product and thinking about an exit strategy out of this company. What do you think I can do in this situation? do you other software architect still fixing bugs in the code?

• Do search engines crawl PDFs and if so are there any rules to follow when making them

  The website I am working on has a few hundred PDFs in it. I don't think I have ever seen any of them come back in a search but there are linked to directly from out site. They are also full of keywords because they are product documents. Is there anything special we need to do to get Google or other search engines to crawl them? Is there any hard and fast rules for making PDFs to help Google like them more? For instance should I run them through ghostscript to clean up broken PDF tags that Adobe creates during generation?

• easy visualization of usage statistics (web app)

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph. I am displaying this data on my site, so a jQuery/javascript/html solution for rendering information into graphs would be ideal. Thank you :) P.S. I wasn't sure if I should ask this on SO, but I am looking more for which product to use, not how to program with it.

• Wireless xbox360 pad connected with xboxdrv doesn't show in jstest

  So Lubuntu 13.04, 3.4.0. I'm trying to use my wireless xbox controller. I've installed xboxdrv. I have to run it with sudo, or I get USBController::USBController(): libusb_open() failed: LIBUSB_ERROR_ACCESS. If I connect the adapter, run the program, and then press the button on the gamepad to connect it, it never really connects - just flashes like it's searching. If I reboot, leaving the controller searching, and run the command again while it's searching after I boot up, the controller connects (the light becomes solid in one corner). Using pkill xboxdrv and then relaunching it doesn't work. Regardless, no matter what I do, the gamepad never shows up in jstest-gtk. sudo xboxdrv --debug gives me: Controller: Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (PC) Vendor/Product: 045e:0719 USB Path: 002:005 Wireless Port: 0 Controller Type: Xbox360 (wireless) [DEBUG] XboxdrvMain::run(): creating UInput [DEBUG] XboxdrvMain::run(): creating ControllerSlotConfig [DEBUG] UInput::create_uinput_device(): create device: 65534 [DEBUG] LinuxUinput::LinuxUinput(): Xbox Gamepad (userspace driver) 0:0 Any ideas?

• Verification as QA - makes sense?

  Preparing my thesis, I found another interesting discrepancy. While some books say verification it terms of static analysis of work products is quality control (looking for defects), other say it is actually quality assurance because the process of checking is decreasing the probability of real defects when these deliverables will be used for product manufacture. I hesitate as both seems to be correct: it is a way of checking for defects (deviation from requirements, design flaws etc.) so it looks like quality control, but also it is a process which does not have to be done and if done, can yield better quality.

• My Oracle Support 6.3 - Knowledge Highlights

  My Oracle Support 6.3 was released over the weekend (13-Oct-2012), and with that we released 30+ enhancements and 60+ bug fixes. Most important changes Search Suggestions are auto-correcting spelling errors, more suggestions for 'how to' type questions, enhanced usability to see the suggested additional terms. Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching. • Allowed keywords for adwords [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Ok to target product names in adwords? I've replaced relevant words away from the real world without losing semantics which is a little difficult. A competitor is called "Box Maker" Can I target the keywords: "box maker" if my company is selling a tool to help you make boxes? Or is that disallowed? Would "Box Maker" the company be able to file a complain on Google? Would it go anywhere? The term 'box maker' gets a lot of searches and is an incredibly cost effective search to target

Prior to joining Oracle, she worked as a database administrator and Senior Technical Officer in Electronics and Communications India Limited (ECIL) and the Department of Atomic Energy.  She started her career as a software developer. I'm aware that there are several CMSes that have this capability, but this particular one was built specifically for that task. Also, I remember it winning some sort of award or recognition for upcoming software products. However, I can't for the life of me remember what this CMS was called or who was developing it.
