• Documenting a REST interface with a flowchart

  Does anybody have suggestions on creating a flowchart representation of a REST-style web interface? In the interest of supplying thorough documentation to co-developers, I've been toying around in dia modeling the interface for modifying and generating a product resource: This particular system begins to act differently with user authentication/resource counts, so before I make modifications, I'm looking for some clarification: Complexity: how would you simplify the overall structure to make this easier to read? Display Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a page? Manual Operation Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a user action like a button click? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My apologies for the re-post. The main stackexchange site suggested this question was better presented on programmers.

• Over a million COBOL porgrammers in the world?

  I think I heard on a previous StackOverflow podcast that COBOL was used as the programming language for traffic lights (or something like that), so this got me interested. I did a quick Google search and found this little article: Today, Cobol is everywhere, yet largely unheard of by millions of people who interact with it daily when using the ATM, stopping at traffic lights or buying a product online. The statistics on Cobol attest to its huge influence on the business world: There are over 220 billion lines of Cobol in existence, a figure which equates to about 80 per cent of the world’s actively used code. There over a million Cobol programmers in the world. There are 200 times as many Cobol transactions that take place each day than Google searches. I didn't really trust the source seeing as how it's on some random PHPBB forum. So how accurate are these figures? Are there really 220 billion lines of COBOL? I assume a few people/companies still use COBOL, but how many?

  Is Windows 7 written using Xaml? Edit Wow, so much hate for such a little question. I'm not an idiot. I know what XAML is. I use it every day. I was just curious whether some of the visual features were laid out with XAML, or if XAML was incorporated in some way to the product. I'm sorry if it is a programming sin not to know what Windows 7 was written in. I mean, I know Windows XP et al used C++/C, I've used Win32 quite a lot (and MFC and .NET).

  I try to be careful when accepting assignments, to avoid mutual disappointment. So, I started to come up with a list of things that I consider ingredients for The Ideal Project: (in no particular order) What did I miss? What did I get wrong? Team size < 6 persons to avoid having too many meetings Team members must be dedicated to the project Gut-feeling-estimate (made by developers) of running period does not exceed 4 months. Projects longer than that tend to become open-ended, and are therefore not projects. Has a Product Owner who has mandate and is well-respected at their own company and who has a real interest in the long-term success of the project. Has no technical involvement from people that are not on the team. (yes that's you, Mr Architect That Doesn't Code) All the usual about quiet working conditions Exciting subject matter. Content management is just not as cool as controlling robots :)

• Download/submission directories are dead? Are they good for SEO?

In the past if you wanted visibility you would create a standardized pad file and you would submit it to hundreds of directories or you used web service that would do that for you. These directories would then serve as first incoming links to your web site. How about today? I think download directories are pretty much dead? Do you think this is still good SEO approach today? Are these software download directories useless?

• What is this chargeback scam from eBooks bought on my website?

  We have a scammer that is buying our e-Books and then performing chargebacks. Our e-Books don't have DRM, so if they wanted to resell them, they would only need to buy each book once. But instead, they keep buying the same books over and over again and then performing hundreds of chargebacks. We have created some additional rules in our fraud protection tools to block certain aspects, even though all the info looks legit, and are hopeful this will slow them down. But my question is: What is the scam? If they aren't getting any product and they only get chargebacks for something they already purchased, then they can't get additional money from the credit card company, so then what's their motivation?

• Google's process for publishing/modifying pages [closed]

  I'm assuming that a group of people at Google have control of certain sections of google.com, but how does Google make sure that employees don't accidentally or intentionally sabotage the website? Does Google use Adobe Contribute or some similar product for sharing/publishing the website. Do employees use WebDAV, FTP, SFTP, or SSH to publish the site. Since Google has hundreds of thousands of servers it probably takes some time for its servers to update. Do they transmit the new copy of the website to all servers before publishing at once? This question does not apply to Google editing a database and having a page reflect the database's changes. It applies to employees editing the source code and/ or back end of the site.

  The last few months I have been spending a lot of time designing (and help design) the developer experience for the areas I contribute to (in future versions of Visual Studio). As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it.   I wish to run multivariate tests on an e-commerce site that run across all product pages. I will be setting and deciding the variations myself all I need to do is track the results in GA. I think may be possible (although only A/B testing is available via the GA UI): https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/platform/features/experiments#serving-framework EXTERNAL – You will choose variations, handle experiment optimization, and only report the chosen variation to Google Analytics. For example, this should be used by 3rd-party optimization platforms that want to integrate with Google Analytics for reporting purposes. In this case, the Google Analytics statistical engine will not run. However how do I configure this and push the data to GA in my page?

• Is it common to prototype in a higher level language?

  I'm currently toying with the idea of embarking on a project that far exceeds my current programming ability in a language I have very little real world experience in (C). Would it be valuable to prototype in a higher level language that I'm more familiar with (like Perl/Python/Ruby/C#) just so I can get the overall design going? Ultimately, the final product is performance sensitive, hence the choice of C, but I'm afraid not knowing C well will make me lose the forest for the trees. While searching for similar questions, I noticed one fellow mention that programmers used to prototype in Prolog, then crank it out in assembler.

• Atheros AR2413 wireless not working after shutdown

  I am using a Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer aspire 3680 laptop and my wifi is not working. I followed the below commands to install the madwifi driver: sudo su apt-get install subversion cd /usr/src svn checkout http://madwifi-project.org/svn/madwifi/trunk madwifi tar cfvz madwifi.tgz cd madwifi make && make install echo "blacklist ath5k" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf echo "ath_pci" /etc/modules modprobe ath_pci sudo reboot After installation I am facing the same problem. My wifi wont work after I shutdown. Infact it didn't work after suspend but I rectified that problem by the following commands: Command 1: sudo rmmod -f ath_pci sudo rfkill unblock all sudo modprobe ath_pci along with the command SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci added to the /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi directory. So if I suspend and then on my laptop the wifi loads well and doesn't create a problem. But if I shutdown my laptop the wifi never loads again and eachtime I have to run a Ubuntu 9.04 live CD to load it. I did try adding the Command 1 to the /etc/rc.local directory but still it doesn't work. So my question is: What should I do in order to make my wireless work without having to run a live CD of ubuntu 9.04 everytime after shutdown? Thanks. • On Reflector Pricing

  I have heard a lot of outrage over Red Gate's decision to charge for Reflector. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a fan of Red Gate. I have worked with them on several usability tests. They also sponsor Simple Talk where I publish articles. They are a good company. I am also a BIG fan of Reflector. I have used it since Lutz originally released it. I have written my own add-ins. I have written code to host reflector and use its object model in my own code. Reflector is a beautiful tool. The care that Lutz took to incorporate extensibility is amazing. I have never had difficulty convincing my fellow developers that it is a wonderful tool. Almost always, once anyone sees it in action, it becomes their favorite tool. This wide spread adoption and usability has made it an icon and pivotal pillar in the DotNet community. Even folks with the attitude that if it did not come out of Redmond then it must not be any good, still love it. It is ironic to hear everyone clamoring for it to be released as open source. Reflector was never open source, it was free, but you never were able to peruse the source code and contribute your own changes. You could not even use Reflector to view the source code. From the very beginning, it was never anyone's intention for just anyone to examine the source code and make their own contributions aside from the add-in model. Lutz chose to hand over the reins to Red Gate because he believed that they would be able to build on his original vision and keep the product viable and effective. He did not choose to make it open source, hoping that the community would be up to the challenge. The simplicity and elegance may well have been lost with the "design by committee" nature of open source. Despite being a wonderful and beloved tool, Reflector cannot be an easy tool to maintain. Maybe because it is so wonderful and beloved, it is even more difficult to maintain. At any rate, we have high expectations. Reflector must continue to be able to reasonably disassemble every language construct that the framework and core languages dream up. We want it to be fast, and we also want it to continue to be simple to use. No small order. Red Gate tried to keep the core product free. Sadly there was not enough interest in the Pro version to subsidize the rest of the expenses. $35 is a reasonable cost, more than reasonable. I have read the blog posts and forum posts complaining about the time associated with getting the expense approved. I have heard people complain about the cost being unreasonable if you are a developer from certain countries. Let's do the math. How much of a productivity boost is Reflector? How many hours do you think it saves you in a typical project? The next question is a little easier if you are a contractor or a consultant, but what is your hourly rate? If you are not a contractor, you can probably figure out an hourly rate. How long does it take to get a return on your investment? The value added proposition is not a difficult one to make. I have read people clamoring that Red Gate sucks and is evil. They complain about broken promises and conflicts of interest. Relax! Red Gate is not evil. The world is not coming to an end. The sun will come up tomorrow. I am sure that Red Gate will come up with options for volume licensing or site licensing for companies that want to get a licensed copy for their entire team. Don't panic, and I am sure that many great improvements are on the horizon. Switching the UI to WPF and including a tabbed interface opens up lots of possibilities.

• How can I set my screen resolution to match my TV?

  I have a computer in my classroom that's connected to an LG smart TV (that's actually not so smart. I wouldn't recommend buying one.). For the touch interface, the TV wants a resolution of 1920x1080 at 60Hz. However, I can't seem to set the computer to that resolution. The display settings only offer 1024x768 and 640x480. The computer dual boots with Windows XP, where widescreen options are available in approximately the required size, but the exact resolution -- or even aspect ratio-- isn't available in XP either. I tried the following command: xrandr -s 1920x1080 -r 60 The response was: Size 1920x1080 not found in available modes Back in the old days, the solution would be to edit xorg.conf. However, since that file no longer exists, and I haven't found up-to-date info, I don't know what else to do. If it helps, this machine will never be connected to a different display, so resolution flexibility isn't important.   Typical situation in UI design: you do design of some UI and, say, came up with some bright new idea like "ribbon" or "kinetic scroll past end". What would be the strategy about such thing? Register patent, don't like it, but anyway would like to ask: how long it takes to do all this stuff and how much it will cost in average? If to forget about patents, will the idea have something like "prior art" status or some such if someone will try to patent this in future? All this about project / product published by solo developer.
