How to/What is a good library, to create a fading indicator message in Java like that of Outlook when you get a message, or Ubuntu/Gnome when you've connected to a network?
I know in Jython you can do
import java.util.Random as Random
Random().nextInt()
But if I have a class I wrote myself, how can I import it into Jython without putting the class itself in a package? If I have a testclass Test:
public class Test {
public void foo() {
System.out.println("bar");
}
}
that's not inside a package. Can I even import that into jython by using something along the lines offrom Test import Test?
In my code I am using java.sql.PreparedStatement.
I then execute the setString() method to populate the wildcards of the prepared statement.
Is there a way for me to retrieve (and print out) the final query before the executeQuery() method is called and the query is executed? I Just want this for debugging purposes.
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm not quite sure what field to use when adding more than 30 days to a Java Calendar object. Is there any difference in between Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH and Calendar.DAY_OF_YEAR?
Example:
GregorianCalendar d = new GregorianCalendar();
d.add(Calendar.DAY_OF_YEAR, 90);
vs
GregorianCalendar d = new GregorianCalendar();
d.add(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH, 90);
Thanks.
Hi,
I have a lot of experience in C and Python, but I'd like to pick up some Java. I was curious if there was a "quick and dirty" guide tailored for people with previous CS background. I'd prefer free online resources but appreciate any suggestion.
Thanks,
Brian

I've found that java.lang.Ingteger implementation of compareTo method looks as follows:
public int compareTo(Integer anotherInteger) {
int thisVal = this.value;
int anotherVal = anotherInteger.value;
return (thisVal<anotherVal ? -1 : (thisVal==anotherVal ? 0 : 1));
}
The question is why use comparison instead of subtraction:
return thisVal - anotherVal;

Hello.
I develop application with Java.
I need to store some initial configuration data in some kind of file.
I want my app to be able to read this data, but I don't want user to do so.
Example : application loads IP from encrypted file. User sees like "dsda@#21da@" so he won't bother doing anything :)
How should I do such a thing?
Thanx!

Hi,
I am developing an application in Netbeans, and it is using JavaDB. I can connect to it and execute queries without issues, but for some reason, the "Output - JavaDB Database Process" pane within Netbeans keeps displaying
Security manager installed using the Basic server security policy.
Could not listen on port 1527 on host localhost:
java.net.BindException: Address already in use
How do I find out what process is already using, or bound to, that port number?
I want to show a box in 3d on my website, and I was thinking to do it in Flash. How I can show a 3d model?
I need something very simple, it's a textured cube, no interaction required, just let the user pan and zoom.
There is a 3ds viewer in flash or something like that?
Java is also ok (but flash is preferred)
In my understanding a singleton object will destroy only when the application is about to terminate. So in C++ I write a Singleton class to log my application and in that Singleton logger's destructor I log the time when my application was terminated. Things worked perfectly in C++.
Now I want to have that same logger in Java, as in java there is no destructor so I implemented the finalize method for that singleton logger. But it seem that finalize method actually never get called.
So, I add that System.runFinalizersOnExit(true); line, somewhere in my code (though I know it is deprecated) and that finalize method get called every time before termination of the app. But still there is a problem! If I try to write anything on file in that finalize method, It does not work, though System.out work without any problem! :(
Can you guys help me on this problem? Here is a sample code of what I am try to do:
Singleton Logger Class:
public class MyLogger {
FileWriter writer;
private MyLogger() {
try {
this.writer = new FileWriter("log.txt");
}
catch (IOException ex) {
}
}
public static MyLogger getInstance() {
return MyLoggerHolder.INSTANCE;
}
private static class MyLoggerHolder {
private static final MyLogger INSTANCE = new MyLogger();
}
@Override
protected void finalize () {
try {
super.finalize();
System.out.println("Here"); //worked correctly.
this.writer.write(new Date().toString()+System.getProperty("line.separator"));
this.writer.write("End");
this.writer.flush(); //does not work!
this.writer.close();
}
catch (Throwable ex) {
}
}
public synchronized void log(String str) {
try {
this.writer.write(new Date().toString()+System.getProperty("line.separator"));
this.writer.write(str+"\n");
this.writer.flush();
}
catch (IOException ex) {
}
}
}
Main:
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.runFinalizersOnExit(true);
MyLogger logger = MyLogger.getInstance();
logger.log("test");
}
}
I am about to start developing an Android application and had a question if in Java there self naming. For instance say I had a variable named dog that held the value of scruffy.
Could I then create a variable named scruffy from that variable. In PHP it would be $$dog. That would make a variable with the name scruffy.
If this is possible please provide example
Is it possible to get a reference to this from within a Java inner class?
i.e.
Class outer {
void aMethod() {
NewClass newClass = new NewClass() {
void bMethod() {
// How to I get access to "this" (pointing to outer) from here?
}
};
}
}
