• Oracle Open World 2012 SOA Presentations now available on OTN

  Oracle Open World 2012 has been over for a bit more than a week now and we're catching up with post-OOW tasks while still marvelling over what I remember as the best Open World yet. We had a steady traffic at our demo pods, all hands on labs were fully booked (stay tuned for those labs), sessions were very well visited and we met innumerable customers for discussions, feedback and Q&A. If you missed any of the sessions or want to share the information with your colleagues, you can go to the Oracle Open World website and search for the respective presentation. • Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

  What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

• Choosing a crossplatform for mobile development

  I am creating a enterprise project and will develop the app for WP, Android and IPhone (Maybe also tablets) I have then done some research of what solutions are out there and have narrowed my choice down to 3 platforms (Due to my requirement to work with Bluetooth) The biggest requirement other than Bluetooth is the need to create good interfaces and module programming so its easy to maintain the whole solution, other than that I would like to use C# but its not a real requirement, but if the difference between 2 platforms is very small then it might tip the scale. Mono (MonoTouch, Mono for android) PhoneGap RhoMobile From my understanding then PhoneGap is not suited for business apps and I am not entirely sure why, but it seems like a platform made for speed rather than long term developement, not sure how true this is. RhoMobile is made for enterprice and might suit my needs, but not sure if its a good platform Anyone with insight that care to share their opinion Mono is C#, seems to be very mature and I found MvvmCross which should help organize the project

• Can't access Ubuntu's shared folders from Windows 7

  In Ubuntu Maverick, I've shared some folders using the Nautilus "Sharing Options" GUI. I can see them from Windows 7, but when I try to access them (from Windows) it asks for a username and password. No matter what I enter, it won't let me in. How do I configure this to share normally? Update: I've found that some of the shared folders let me in, but others don't. Of the ones that do, some of their subfolders do, others don't, etc. How can I investigate what's causing this?

• Can you delete the Humanity icon theme safely?

  I'm trying to reduce used space after running disk usage analyser, since I'm using a 40GB SSD. The icons use quite a bit of space! Could I delete those that I don't use, such as humanity? (I use Faenza-Dark) If it is possible, what would be the best way to this? as when I attempt to remove humanity in the Software Centre it says the software-centre itself must be removed. Similar problems arise with synaptic package manager. I was wary of just deleting the unused directories in usr/share/icons/. Thanks for the help!

• What are the things you can do to maximize your chances of hitting good programmers in the campus?

  I'm thinking about approaching my lecturers in my university for student recommendation for me to hire. So far the emails I sent are not very encouraging. The lecturers either coming back to me, saying that they couldn't get good students, or just ignore my mail. I tried to be as polite as I could in the email, so I think it's not etiquette issue that turn them off. Still, I plan to visit my campus. What are the things I can do to maximize your chances of hitting good programmers in the campus? Any experience you can share?

• Ubuntu Splash Screen Customization

  I wanted to know how to customize the splash screen in Ubuntu 13. I have tried to install Plymouth Manager but when I run sudo apt-get update it says it was unable to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/mefrio-g/plymouthmanager/ubuntu/dists/raring/main/binary-i386/Packages. I opened the address in Firefox but it didn't open. Also I would like to know where the files for the Ubuntu Logo, Splash Screen Background, etc. are located (to customize them). In previous versions they were located at usr/share/images. I am running Ubuntu 13 Raring Ringtail on VMWare Player. The host is an Acer 5600U running Windows 8. Thnx.

• Ubuntu App Showdown: Commercial applications

  Me and a few of my friends decided to create a game for the App showdown. However, we wanted to make a commercial game out of it (for <5$). So the question is: If I want to submit a commercial app, what exactly do I have to do? We would be willing to provide it as open source software but want to sell it in USC anyway. How should I submit the app if we can do that? (Note: we would only open source if it's required, but would prefer to only share the source with the judges. Is that also possible?). Also: If I have to upload the source code to the PPA and let it build by ubuntu's build service: How do I do that with Mono-apps? It worked perfectly for other projects where I had CMakeFiles and stuff like that. But for Mono, I only have a MonoDevelop project file - how to do that right? Thanks

• How can I cleanup a botched Truecrypt installation?

  I made the mistake of downloading the X64 version of Truecrypt and trying to install it when I'm actually running the 32-bit version of Precise Pangolin. I want to clean up the files that I am unable to use, but of course I can't just run the uninstall since Truecrypt could not be installed in the first place. I am new to this but I have spent some time researching the command line. When I run "locate trucrypt -i" in the terminal I receive several relevant files in the usr/bin and usr/share directories. No "rm" commands work on these listed files--I only get "no such file or directory" back. I'm sure this has something to do with permissions but I don't know what I'm missing here. Why is it I cannot find these files through the GUI (even when I select "show hidden files") or when I try to navigate to these files via the terminal using cd and ls commands? How can I remove these files (they are there aren't they?), one way or another, from my system? Your patience and time are appreciated

• Creating a level editor event system

  I'm designing a level editor for game, and I'm trying to create sort of an 'event' system so I can chain together things. If anyone has used RPG Maker, I'm trying to do similar to their system. Right now, I have an 'EventTemplate' class and a bunch of sub-classed 'EventNodes' which basically just contain properties of their data. Orginally, the IAction and IExecute interface performed logic but it was moved into a DLL to share between the two projects. Question: How can I abstract logic from data in this case? Is my model wrong? Isn't cast typing expensive to parse these actions all the time? Should I write a 'Processor' class to execute these all? But then these actions that can do all sorts of things need to interact with all sorts of sub-systems.

  The company I work for maintains a successful SaaS product that grew "organically" over the years. We are planning to expand the line with a suite of new products that will share data with the existing product. To support this, we are looking to consolidate business logic into a single place: a web service layer. The WS layer will be used by: The web applications A tool to import data A tool to integrate with other client software (not an API per se) We also want to create an API that can be used by our customers that are capable of using it to create their own integrations. We are struggling with the following question: Should the internal API (aka the WS layer) and the external API be one in the same, with security and permission settings to control what can be done by who, or should they be two separate applications where the external API just calls the internal API like any other application? So far in our debate it seems that separating them may be more secure, but will add overhead. What have others done in a similar situation?

• Windows Phone 7 Design Template

  Expression Blend is a wonderful design environment for WP7 (Windows Phone 7) but for quickly visualizing a concept nothing beats Illustrator! I am excited about WP7 and decided that having a solid .ai template would prove invaluable. Some of the details of the WP7 UI Design and Interaction Guide are a bit fuzzy (literally) but I was able to generate some useful layout guides, character styles, and symbols. While the template does not cover every aspect of the guide I think it is a good launching point; if you find it useful and extend it please share your updates (I created the template in CS4, if you have problems in earlier versions let me know).Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Wired Connection shared with other computers connects then disconnects in 11.10 nm-applet

  connecting with shared with other computers connection in NetworkManager. Other computer gets IP but NetworkManager disconnects the shared connection after half a second. This same setup worked perfectly fine in 11.04. Is there any fix, workaround or alternative way to share a connection with another computer over an Ethernet cable. (I can downgrade to 11.04 but I'd rather not ). EDIT: found a workaround The workaround for now is to set IPv6 options to Ignore and then sudo killall dnsmasq. Reconnect and it should work.

• Forcing Nautilus to use Kerberos (Active Directory) authentication

  Is there a way to get Nautilus or any other file manager that runs on Ubuntu 11.04 to use Kerberos for authentication? I'm using Likewise Open to join machines to the domain, and I can't type in passwords for every user on every computer that needs to mount a network share. I've been able to get Kerberos working with the command line smbclient, but oddly Kerberos does not seem to be Nautilus-integrated. I also checked the SSH config file, and it looks like you can enable GSSAPIAuthentication, but it only works for Kerberos v2, not the current version, which I think is v5.

  I would like to build an app like instagram or twitter. User can upload photo, type a few words, hashtag, share their location. And there will be a page like newsfeed showing updates. User can login with oauth. How do I store those data especially photos? (In those cloud thins? like Google cloud? I don't know how those cloud works) and what is the cost of it (if can compress user uploaded photos?). I currently only knows php, javascript and mysql.

• Ubuntu 14.04 Notification incorrectly displayed

  I have a problem with my notifications on Ubuntu 14.04 x64. The notifications are just plain text with a colored background, and are also strangely placed in the top left corner. I have no idea on how it changed. After one reboot it was just there.. Here is a picture of the problem in question.: As you can see the notification appear over the unified menu. How can I restore the original state of the notification bubble? • How to add a holding page in front of a domain

  I have set up a holding page to announce a new version of a website coming soon. I wanted people to still be able to access the original site, so my approach was to place the holding page in the root folder on the server, and move the original site to a subfolder and link to it from the holding page. However, on testing this setup it appears to have hurt the SEO placing of the website. Is there a better approach to this? I'm a bit stumped as I want both to share the same URL.

• Getting Started on Isometric Board Game port

  I have developed a (off-line) board game that I would like to translate to an online/social game in an isometric grid perspective. My background is in .NET web development, so I'm very comfortable with C#, HTML, jQuery/javascript. Still getting my feet wet with HTML5. I have familiarity with Flash, but I haven't worked with it in years. I'm also interested in working with Azure for hosting the back-end. Ultimately I'd like this game to have persistent leaderboard/achievements and therefore be able to log in through FB and Kong and the like. Obviously, I'm not looking for 'here's exactly how to do all of this'. But I would love some opinions on where to start, particularly given my background and goals.
