• Ubuntu 12.10 sources.list empty after install

  I recently installed the Ubuntu 12.10 server version from a USB stick. The step "Install additional software" or whatever keeps failing, so i though screw it and continued. Everything else worked like a charm. I thought. Turns out, the only two entries in my sources.list are the install CD. This means that i have no way of getting a.. well.. anything installed. Can someone give me a short list of repositories that i need so i can put them in the file? And on a similar note: What is the comment character for the sources list? #?

• How can I display host name on windows desktop

  I do a lot of work on Windows Server 2008 remote desktops and often lose track of which host I am currently logged on to. Is there a way of displaying (without installing any non-standard apps) the host name or IP address of the host I am connected to in either the wallpaper or the notification area? I tried creating files in the desktop with the name of the machine - but my roaming profile shows the same set of desktop files on every machine, so that was scuppered. Duh! In shell windows this is easy: just set the prompt to display the host name. Surely there is a simple way of doing the same for the graphical desktop.

• Windows 8 Program Sharing?

  How do I, as the administrator, share the Skype program with a user on the same PC? I tried to download Skype to the user from the windows store that said it was blocked and I must contact the administrator. The Skype icon appears on the user desktop but with an X in the corner with no way to allow it to work as the administrator. In the administrator desktop the Skype icon appears without the x and it does work. I have tried to research this issue and so far all I have been able to find and do is the enable $admin share at this link http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/2012/10/windows-8-enable-the-admin-share/ Now that I have done this how do I use it to share the Skype program? • Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names?

  I've got a computer running Windows 8 and in the user accounts I can see four accounts (they're in french, here's a rough translation): [email protected] / administrator Veronique YYY / [email protected] ASP.NET Machine Account / local account guest account / the guest account is desactivated I've got several questions but they're all related to email addresses and login names / accounts. Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names? Can you mix live and non-live user accounts on a Windows 8 system? Is it possible to have a live Windows 8 user account which is not using a @live.xx email address? Is it possible to have a non-live Windows 8 user account which is using a @live.xx email address? If the gmail.com email address of the admin is not a live Windows 8 account, does this mean I can create a "fake" email and use that as the email of a new Windows 8 account? Basically I don't understand very well why there are email addresses displayed on the login screen and why there are both @live.xx and @gmail.com email addresses on the same system and answer to the questions I asked above may help me understand a bit better what is going on (I'm coming from a Linux / OS X background. I literally haven't used Windows in more than a decade).

I can ping any virtual host from any machine on the network and get a response from the correct IP address. I can't see anything in out Netgear router that might prevent one machine from reaching the other. Besides, once the local hosts file resolves to an ip address that's all that goes out onto the local network. I've gone through an extensive number of posts on both SO and as the result of Google searches. I can't say that I have found anything definitive anywhere.

• Display is slightly blurry on (native) 1920x1080 resolution

  I have a computer monitor that is approximately 23" in size. Its native resolution is 1920x1080, and Windows 7 will not allow it to be any higher. However, I cannot make the resolution a little lower as well. When I right-click on my desktop and select 'Screen resolution,' the vertical slider has only two options: 1920x1080 and 1280x720. There are no real problems that I am having besides the fact that the image is slightly blurry. I can easily make things out and see them, but I definitely feel that the image is not as clear as it could be. My graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5450 and it has the latest graphics drivers installed. I've tried playing around with the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to see if I can change an option to make the image clearer, but I had no luck. I did find one odd thing, though. When I lowered the refresh rate from 60Hz to 50Hz, the image kind of "zoomed in" but it also became perfectly clear like I would expect it to look. The problem is that when I use 50Hz, the image zooms in a little on the center and I lose maybe an inch and a half of the screen (I do not see the bar at the top of applications, I do not see the Windows taskbar thing, etc). I figured if I could somehow zoom in so that the entire image fills the screen (not the slightly cropped version) then I would have the perfectly crisp image of 50Hz, and also the uncropped image of 60Hz. However, upon zooming in, the image began to look blurry again just like it did with 60Hz. So I am at a loss here. I do not know how to make the image look as clear as it should. I have the latest drivers (I updated them today) and I know that my monitor supports the resolution that I am trying to use. Has anybody experienced something like this before? I'd really appreciate any input - thanks! Update: I have figured out how to make the display look crisp! I set it to the 50Hz option, and then I changed the scaling through the monitor itself, rather than software. Now, however, I am finding that games look pretty bad because since it is clear, the lower quality really becomes apparent. I cannot run new games at 1080p, so I run them at the lowest resolution possible (1280x720, since it is the only other option offered, as I have mentioned). So I am wondering, is there a way to have Windows display more resolution options?

• Emacs org-mode: how to avoid duplicate lines in agenda, when items is scheduled AND has deadline

  Many of my TODO items in Emacs org-mode have a DEADLINE defined in the future (e. g. Friday) and are at the same time SCHEDULED today so that I already know I have to start working on this task. Then, this task will appear twice in my agenda. That's not nice but not necessarily a problem yet, but if then the task has assigned a time estimate for its duration and I go to column view with C-C C-X C-C to see how much time my tasks today will need, the time estimate for this task is counted twice, so e. g. if the time effort estimate is 2 hours, I'll have 4 hours in my daily agenda, as the item appears as well as scheduled today (or in the past) as also with its deadline in 3 days. How can I avoid counting an item twice?

• Firewall blocks outgoing email

  On my Debian server running a Django website, I have an error when I need to send an email. The error received is Exception Type: gaierror Exception Value: [Errno -2] Name or service not known Exception Location: /usr/lib/python2.6/socket.py in create_connection, line 547 You can see the full error log here. After testing, it seems it is my firewall that blocks the request. You can see my iptable file (/etc/init.d/firewall). I think the problem comes from the two commented lines that were supposed to accepts all established connections. When I uncomment them, I have an error iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.   In IIS 7, is there a way to set two urls on the same site to allow http and https, and the rest to be https only? - http://mysite/url1 or https://mysite/url1 is accepted and stays on that protocol. - http://mysite/url2 or https://mysite/url2 is accepted and stays on that protocol. - any other item, i.e. http://mysite/whatever redirects to https://mysite/whatever - https://mysite/whatever is accepted.   I have some Windows XP machines that are using the standard Firewall to control traffic. I have a need to allow all incoming traffic on all ports from the local subnet (255.255.255.0). I have looked at the settings and it would appear that I can indeed set scope for a rule, but a rule is applied only against an application or a single port. Is there a method to do this?

• Documenting software-updates semi-automatically in MacOS X by parsing log files?

  I'd like to document changes I made to my computer (running MacOS 10.6.8) to be able to identify the sources of eventual problems. Mostly I install updates when a software notifies me about a newer version and offers me a dialog to download and install the update. Currently I'm documenting those updates "by hand" by noting in a text file, when I have e. g. installed a Flash-Player update or updated another 3rd party software ... I wonder if I could achieve that easier and semi-automatically by parsing system logfiles for certain texts like "install" and that way directly get the relevant information: what has been installed (Software and version) when has been installed where has it been installed/what has changed Is there a way to extract such information by a script from the existing logfiles?

• How can I read out internal pdf creation/modified date with Windows PowerShell?

  PDF files seem to have a separate set of file properties which contain (among others) a creation date and a modified date (see screenshot here: http://ventajamarketing.com/writingblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Acrobat-Document-Properties1-300x297.png). Those date obviously can differ from the creation and modified date shown in the file system (Windows Explorer). How can I access the date information in the PDF file and read it out in Windows 7 with Windows PowerShell (or maybe another method)?

• SSH Tunnel doesn't work in China

  Last year I was working in China for a few months. I never bothered setting up a real VPN, but just created a SSH tunnel, and changed my browsers proxy settings to connect through it. Everything worked great (except flash of course) but that was fine. However, now I'm back in China but I'm having problems with this approach. I do the same thing as last time, and according to https://ipcheckit.com/ my IP address is indeed the IP of my (private) server in the US, and I'm logging in to my server using a fingerprint I created long before going to China so no MITM should be possible. Furthermore the certificate from ipcheckit.com is from GeoTrust - so everything should be OK However, I still can't access sites which are blocked in China. Any idea how this could be possible?

• What can an effective workflow for changing input methods be on Mac OS X?

  I switch between three languages input methods frequently, sometimes in the same typing session. The default shortcut on a Macintosh seems to be to set keyboard shortcuts for previous/next language (I hit opt-cmd-space to go to previous language) and if you're more than bi-lingual you have to cycle until you find the one for you. The ideal would be something like hitting fn-e for English, fn-j for Japanese and fn-g for German, but anything better than the current state would be a great improvement.

• Can a DNS server return NXDOMAIN and an unresolved CNAME even though the alias exists?

  I'm trying to understand why one given DNS server is not resolving our domain correctly. When I look up www.foo.com from this name server, a CNAME foo.bar.cc is correctly returned but there's no attached A record and the response status is NXDOMAIN. I understand that this could happen if the DNS server can not resolve the alias foo.bar.cc. However, if I use the same DNS server and look up foo.bar.cc directly, I always get the correct A record. When using any other DNS servers I've tested (different ISPs, Google DNS, Open DNS) our domain resolves correctly. Given this situation, is there some possible problem in our DNS that could cause this? Or does it seem like this given DNS server is to blame? The DNS server in question is used by a lot of people and it seems more likely that the problem is caused by us, but I don't see how - any clues?

• Outlook fails to download any message over 3Mb

  My outlook fails when trying to download any message/attachment which is larger than 3Mb and will not download any more emails until I go into my internet email account and delete that message. It is then fine until another large email tries to download to Outlook. This is happening on an XP machine with Outlook 2000 and a Windows 7 machine with Outlook 2003. • Debian on HP ProLiant server hangs (disk i/o is my guess)

  I installed Debian (2.6.32-5-amd64) on my HP ProLiant MicroServer (purchased recently.) I also added 3 2tb hd in zfs. I've experienced several server froze. Sometimes it showed Soft lockup CUP stuck for 61s! • Three disk (possibly RAID) data recovery

  I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?

  I have installed a new hard drive in our PC running Windows XP and I wonder how to transfer the data from the old (small) data partition to the new (large) one. My question concerns only a data partition containing files and folders (not the boot partition with the Operating System files!) Is it ok to just copy the folders in the Windows XP Explorer to the new partition? Could anything be lost this way (hidden folders, metadata, ..)?   Thursday morning the Illinois public transport system came through for me again. I took the Metra train north from Union Station (which was seething with inbound commuters) to Prairie Crossing (Libertyville). At Prairie Crossing I met Paul and Justin from 8th Light and then Justin drove us to the office. The 8th Light office is in an small business park, in a semi-rural area, surrounded by ponds. Upstairs there are two spacious, open areas for developers. At one end of the floor is Doug Bradbury’s walk-and-code station; a treadmill with a desk and computer so that a developer can get exercise at work. At the other end of the floor is a hammock. This irregular office furniture is indicative of the 8th Light philosophy, to pursue excellence without being limited by conventional wisdom. 8th Light have a wall covered in posters, each illustrating one person’s software craftsmanship journey. The posters are a fascinating visualisation of the similarities and differences between each of our progressions. The first thing I did Thursday morning was to create my own poster and add it to the wall. Over two days at 8th Light I did some pairing with the 8th Lighters and we shared thoughts on software development. I am not accustomed to such a progressive and enlightened environment and I found the experience inspirational. At 8th Light TDD, clean code, pairing and kaizen are deeply ingrained in the culture. Friday, during lunch, 8th Light hosted a ‘lunch and learn’ event. Paul Pagel lead us through a coding exercise using micro-pomodori. We worked in pairs, focusing on the pedagogy of pair programming and TDD. After lunch I recorded this interview with Paul Pagel and Justin Martin. We discussed 8th light, craftsmanship, apprenticeships and the limelight framework. Craftsmen advance their skills by learning from each other, and I can’t do that working at home by myself. The challenge is finding the right team, and becoming a part of it.
