• Unable to start after 13.04 > 13.10 udate

  At the end of the update process, clicking on the Restart button had no visible effect whatsoever. After waiting 5 to 10 minutes, I decided to reboot the computer manually. Since then, I rebooted a good dozen times (not with the hope that it would work but with the hope of reading the messages) with the same non-result and the same symptoms: I get the ASCII text-on-purple Ubuntu 13.10 . . . . splash screen with these messages: * Restoring resolver state... [OK] * Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] * Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [OK] Everything disappears. The whole process hangs at a purple screen with the mouse cursor right in the middle. At this point, I'm unable to use the mouse and the keyboard. Booting from a 12.04 CD works perfectly, Disk Utility says that all my disks are OK and I can mount my main partition without problems. Something obviously went wrong at the end of the upgrade but I have no idea what. I'd appreciate any pointer. This is the kind of moment where you really think "Next time, I'll separate my /home partition for sure". My machine is an aging but working Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core Duo E2160 processor, 2 GHz of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3650 video card. Thanks.

• How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not? I tried following the link given at the very bottom to install the latest ALSA drivers, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules however I keep running into an error when trying to install: sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) Reading package lists... • Spend Analytics on a Grand Scale

  The Wall St. Journal reports in Billions in Bloat Uncovered in Beltway that a recent study by Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a massive study of several programs and agencies that cost U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars each year.  This report help save $100 to $200 Billion dollars by identifying duplicate spending and ineffective programs that can be consolidated or eliminated. Now, that is spend analytics on a massive scale! It remains to be seen how actionable that information will be.  Certainly, there have been studies before that identify wasteful spending.  But, it’s a great case of the power of business intelligence and spend analytics.   Many companies do find significant savings when they implement spend and procurement analytics. What makes for an excellent spend analysis? It should be: Objective and provide visibility across programs and/or divisions A cross functional analysis that links financial with performance metrics Prescriptive and actionable Spend and procurement analytics have been HOT during the economic downturn! I expect 2011 will see many more companies get serious about spend analytics and would love to hear from companies who are willing to share their experience.

• Bug: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at

  I have recently installed new system on my disc, Ubuntu 12.04. Installation proceeded without problems, I started installing additional software and put data from other discs. I had already two times bug report, it was quite long, and I have no idea how to acces to log file (which probably is somewhere saved) and since I had to switch off the computer using the button, anything else was possible, here is just a small part of it (what I've noted on paper) could not write bytes: Broken pipe speach dicpatcher disabled: edit etc/default/speach-dispatcher saned disabled: edit .... and than: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000009c I've run Memory test in GRUB, everything is fine. First time it occured when I was using rsync, second time when I was trying to install texlive. Should I install whole system once again? Or can it be hardware problem? Or something else? If there is any hardware details which may be relevant, please ask, since I have no idea what is happening, I don't know what kind of information could be useful. Thanks P.S. dmesg output:

• how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?

• Architecture for dashboard showing aggregated stats [on hold]

  I'd like to know what are common architectural pattern for the following problem. Web application A has information on sales, users, responsiveness score, etc. Some of this information are computationally intensive and or have a complex business logic (e.g. responsiveness score). I'm building a separate application (B) for internal admin tasks that modifies data in web application A and report on data from web application A. For writing I'm planning to use a restful api. E.g. create a new entity, update entity, etc. In application B I'd like to show some graphs and other aggregate data for the previous 12 months. I'm planning to store the aggregate data for each month in redis. Some data should update more often, e.g every 10 minutes. I can think of 3 ways of doing this. A scheduled task in app B that connects to an api of app A that provides some aggregated data. Then app B stores it in Redis and use that to visualise pages. Cons: it makes complex calculation within a web request, requires lot's of work e.g. api server and client, storing, etc., pros: business logic still lives in app A. A scheduled task in app A that aggregates data in an non-web process and stores it directly in Redis to be accessed by app B. A scheduled task in app A that aggregates data in a non-web process and uses an api in app B to save it. I'd like to know if there is a well known architectural solution to this type of problems and if not what are other pros/cons for the solution I've suggested?

• OBIEE Capacity Planning

  I can not even recall how many times I was asked by a customer what size the machine should be bought to run our Software. Unfortunately Tech Support is not even the right address to answer that question, as a purchase decision is closely tied to the answer. Hence, Tech Support has been limited to the answer: "The biggest machine you can afford" . Many Customers were unhappy with that and have tried to get us to be more precise and that causes a lot of explanation and lengthy discussion. In the end no one is wiser or happier.  Therefore I am happy to report that at least for OBIEE the decision has just been made a whole lot easier. Have a look at the note Oracle BI EE 11g Architectural Deployment: Capacity Planning (Doc ID 1323646.1) The document attached to that note gives you a good overview for teh sizing of the machines that Oracle recommends to run OBIEE (be it a small installation or a bigger distributed installation) If you have any more questions about this topic and what machines we recommend, then get in contact with  Oracle Consulting or speak to your sales representative.

• Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

  I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration. • Is Reading the Spec Enough?

  This question is centered around Scheme but really could be applied to any LISP or programming language in general. Background So I recently picked up Scheme again having toyed with it once or twice before. In order to solidify my understanding of the language, I found the Revised^5 Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme and have been reading through that along with my compiler/interpreter's (Chicken Scheme) listed extensions/implementations. Additionally, in order to see this applied I have been actively seeking out Scheme code in open source projects and such and tried to read and understand it. This has been sufficient so far for me understanding the syntax of Scheme and I've completed almost all of the Ninety-nine Scheme problems (see here) as well as a decent number of Project Euler problems. Question While so far this hasn't been an issue and my solutions closely match those provided, am I missing out on a great part of Scheme? Or to phrase my question more generally, does reading the specification of a language along with well written code in that language sufficient to learn from? Or are other resources, books, lectures, videos, blogs, etc necessary for the learning process as well.

  Matt Lord already announced this change, but I am so happy, so want to repeat. MySQL Community Bugs Database Team introduced new button "Affects Me". After you click this button, counter, assigned to each of bug reports, will increase by one. This means we: MySQL Support and Engineering, - will see how many users are affected by the bug. Why is this important? We have always considered community input as we prioritize bug fixes, and this is one more point of reference for us. Before this change we only had a counter for support customers which increased when they opened a support request, complaining they are affected by a bug. But our customers are smart and not always open support request when hit a bug: sometimes they simply implement workaround. Or there could be other circumstances when they don't create a ticket. Or this could be just released version, which big shops frighten to use in production. Therefore, sometimes, when discussing which bug to prioritize and which not we can not rely only on "Affects paying customers" number, rather need to make guess if one or another bug can affect large group of our users. We used number of bug report subscribers, most recent comments, searched forums, but all these methods gave only approximation. Therefore I want to ask you. If you hit a bug which already was reported, but not fixed yet, please click "Affects Me" button! It will take just a few seconds, but your voice will be heard.

  From Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President and General Manager, Oracle's JD Edwards As you may have heard, we recently announced some changes to the way Oracle will offer licensing of technology products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Specifically, we have withdrawn from new sales the product known as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Technology Foundation ("Blue Stack"). Our motivation for this change is simply to streamline licensing for our customers. Going forward, customers will license Oracle products from Oracle and IBM products from IBM. Customers who are currently licensed for Technology Foundation will continue to receive support--unchanged--through September 30, 2016. This announcement affects how customers license these IBM products; it does not affect Oracle's certification roadmap for IBM products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Customers who are currently running their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne infrastructure using IBM platform components can continue to do so regardless of whether they license these components via Technology Foundation or directly from IBM. New customers choosing to run JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on IBM technology should license JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Core Tools from Oracle while licensing Infrastructure and any licenses of IBM products from IBM.   Microsoft has released developer previews for Visual Studio 2011 and .Net framework 4.5. There are lots of new features available in the developer preview. One of the most interested things for web developers is the support introduced for new HTML 5 form controls. Now you can see more options are added here than prior versions of ASP.Net. I just selected Email as TextMode. I added one button to submit my page. From the source of the rendered page, I saw the below markup for my email textbox <input name="TextBox1" type="email" id="TextBox1" /> Try to enter an invalid email and you will see the browser will ask you to enter a valid one by default. When rendered in non-supported browsers, these fields are behaving just as normal text boxes. So make sure you are using validation controls with these fields. See the browser support compatability matrix with these controls with various browser vendors. ASP.Net 4.5 introduced the support for these new form controls. You can build interactive forms using the newly added controls, keeping in mind that you need to validate the data for non-supported browsers.

  As you might be aware, a few days back we released Patchset 2 (PS2) for several products in the Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 stack including WebLogic Server and SOA Suite. Though there was no patchset released for Oracle Service Registry (OSR) 11g, being an integral part of Fusion Middleware & SOA, OSR 11g R1 ( 11.1.1.2 ) is fully certified with this release. Below is some recommended reading before installing OSR 11g with the new PS2 : OSR 11g R1 & SOA Suite 11g PS2 in a Shared WebLogic Domain If you intend to deploy OSR 11g in the same domain as the SOA Suite 11g, the primary recommendation is to install OSR 11g in its own Managed Server within the same Weblogic Domain as the SOA Suite, as the following diagram depicts : An important pre-requisite for this setup is to apply Patch 9499508, after installation. It basically replaces a registry library - wasp.jar - in the registry application deployed on your server, so as to enable co-deployment of OSR 11g & SOA Suite 11g in the same WLS Domain. The patch fixes a java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation that appears in your OSR system log and is now available for download. The second, equally important, pre-requisite is to modify the setDomainEnv.sh/.cmd file for your WebLogic Domain to conditionally set the CLASSPATH so that the oracle.soa.fabric.jar library is not included in it for the Managed Server(s) hosting OSR 11g. Architecting an OSR 11g High Availability Setup Typically you would want to create a High Availability (HA) OSR 11g setup, especially on your production system. The following illustrates the recommended topology. • Ask the Readers: Do You Prefer Computers, Game Consoles, or Other Devices for Your Gaming Needs?

  Nearly everyone who has access to a computer will play games on it at some point, but many people also use a separate game platform as well. What we would like to know this week is if you prefer using a computer, game consoles, or other devices for your gaming needs. Photo of Faith and Kate Connors from Mirror’s Edge by Tamahikari Tammas. Video games are a perfect way to relax and have fun at home (or at work if you can sneak in some game time!). The increasing variety of devices available with each passing year are making it easier to have access to a gaming platform to suit your needs or “darkest gaming desires”. For many people their computers are the perfect platform…they can play Flash-based games in their browsers, use the default set of games that come with their system, and install any extras that catch their eyes. The added benefit is that when game time is over they can drop right into their browsing, e-mail, personal projects, or work without having to switch hardware. The convenience of the “all-in-one” platform is certainly appealing! Perhaps you prefer to use your computer for other activities outside of gaming and own one or more separate game consoles. You might have chosen an Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo for example. Maybe a hand-held is preferable for its’ size and portability. Then there are mobile phones and the iPad… With so many options it may feel hard to choose the right platform(s) without a good bit of research regarding display, availability of games for a particular platform, how long before the platform starts to become “obsolete”, etc. What we would like to know this week is which gaming platform you prefer. Is there only one that you choose to use or do you use multiple platforms for gaming? Is there a particular reason such as convenience for your choices? You may even be keeping an older platform around just for a certain game (or games) made for it. Are there any recommendations or advice that you would like to share with your fellow readers? • On Writing Blogs

  Why are so many blogs about IT so difficult to read? Over at SQLServerCentral.com, we do a special subscription-only newsletter called Database Weekly. Every other week, it is my turn to look through all the blogs, news and events that might be of relevance to people working with databases. We provide the title, with the link, and a short abstract of what you can expect to read. It is a popular service with close to a million subscribers. You might think that this is a happy and fascinating task. Sometimes, yes. If a blog comes to the point quickly, and says something both interesting and original, then it has our immediate attention. If it backs up what it says with supporting material, then it is more-or-less home and dry, featured in DBW's list. If it also takes trouble over the formatting and presentation, maybe with an illustration or two and any code well-formatted, then we are agog with joy and it is marked as a must-visit destination in our blog roll. More often, however, a task that should be fun becomes a routine chore, and the effort of trawling so many badly-written blogs is enough to make any conscientious Health & Safety officer whistle through their teeth at the risk to the editor's spiritual and psychological well-being. And yet, frustratingly, most blogs could be improved very easily. There is, I believe, a simple formula for a successful blog. First, choose a single topic that is reasonably fresh and interesting. Second, get to the point quickly; explain in the first paragraph exactly what the blog is about, and then stay on topic. In writing the first paragraph, you must picture yourself as a pilot, hearing the smooth roar of the engines as your plane gracefully takes air. Too often, however, the accompanying sound is that of the engine stuttering before the plane veers off the runway into a field, and a wheel falls off. The author meanders around the topic without getting to the point, and takes frequent off-radar diversions to talk about themselves, or the weather, or which friends have recently tagged them. This might work if you're J.D Salinger, or James Joyce, but it doesn't help a technical blog. Sometimes, the writing is so convoluted that we are entirely defeated in our quest to shoehorn its meaning into a simple summary sentence. Finally, write simply, in plain English, and in a conversational way such that you can read it out loud, and sound natural. That's it! If you could also avoid any references to The Matrix then this is a bonus but is purely personal preference. Cheers, Tony.

• Inflector for .NET

  I was writing conventions for FluentNHibernate the other day and I ran into the need to pluralize a given string and immediately thought of the ruby on rails Inflector.  It turns out there is a .NET library out there also capable of doing word inflection, originally written (I believe) by Andrew Peters, though the link I had no longer works.  The entire Inflector class is only a little over 200 lines long and can be easily included into any project, and contains the Pluralize() method along with a few other helpful methods (like Singularize(), Camelize(), Capitalize(), etc). The Inflector class is available in its entirety from my github repository https://github.com/srkirkland/Inflector.  In addition to the Inflector.cs class I added tests for every single method available so you can gain an understanding of what each method does.  Also, if you are wondering about a specific test case feel free to fork my project and add your own test cases to ensure Inflector does what you expect. • formula for replicating glTexGen in opengl es 2.0 glsl

  I also posted this on the main StackExchange, but this seems like a better place, but for give me for the double post if it shows up twice. I have been trying for several hours to implement a GLSL replacement for glTexGen with GL_OBJECT_LINEAR. For OpenGL ES 2.0. In Ogl GLSL there is the gl_TextureMatrix that makes this easier, but thats not available on OpenGL ES 2.0 / OpenGL ES Shader Language 1.0 Several sites have mentioned that this should be "easy" to do in a GLSL vert shader. But I just can not get it to work. My hunch is that I'm not setting the planes up correctly, or I'm missing something in my understanding. I've pored over the web. But most sites are talking about projected textures, I'm just looking to create UV's based on planar projection. The models are being built in Maya, have 50k polygons and the modeler is using planer mapping, but Maya will not export the UV's. So I'm trying to figure this out. I've looked at the glTexGen manpage information: g = p1xo + p2yo + p3zo + p4wo What is g? Is g the value of s in the texture2d call? I've looked at the site: http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Mathematics_of_glTexGen Another size explains the same function: coord = P1*X + P2*Y + P3*Z + P4*W I don't get how coord (an UV vec2 in my mind) is equal to the dot product (a scalar value)? Same problem I had before with "g". What do I set the plane to be? In my opengl c++ 3.0 code, I set it to [0, 0, 1, 0] (basically unit z) and glTexGen works great. I'm still missing something. My vert shader looks basically like this: WVPMatrix = World View Project Matrix.
