• Is this Anti-Scraping technique viable with Crawl-Delay?

  I want to prevent web scrapers from abusing 1,000,000 on my website. I'd like to do this by returning a "503 Service Unavailable" error code for users that access an abnormal number of pages per minute. I don't want search engine spiders to ever receive the error. My inclination is to set a robots.txt crawl-delay which will ensure spiders access a number of pages per minute under my 503 threshold. Is this an appropriate solution? Do all major search engines support the directive? Could it negatively affect SEO? Are there any other solutions or recommendations?

• How to reboot into Windows from Ubuntu?

  I'm looking for a way to reboot into Windows from Ubuntu on a 10.10/Vista dual boot system. The specific use case is that I would like to be able to ssh into my running Ubuntu instance and issue a command that will initiate a reboot directly into Windows. I found a promising blog post, but the script that it suggests isn't working: #!/bin/bash WINDOWS_ENTRY=`grep menuentry /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep --line-number Windows` MENU_NUMBER=$(( `echo $WINDOWS_ENTRY | sed -e "s/:.*//"` - 1 )) sudo grub-reboot $MENU_NUMBER sudo reboot man grub-reboot isn't much help, but it seems to be leading me in the right direction: set the default boot entry for GRUB, for the next boot only WINDOWS_ENTRY=`grep menuentry /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep --line-number Windows` MENU_NUMBER=$(( `echo $WINDOWS_ENTRY | sed -e "s/:.*//"` - 1 )) echo $MENU_NUMBER This returns the expected value, but on reboot the first menu entry is still highlighted. • Lost the Hard Drive Icon from the Launcher

  I unlocked the C Drive icon connected to the Launcher. Once I moved it onto the desktop, it disappeared. In attempting to create an new icon, I was asked to create a mount point. The mount point directory then showed 2 links rather than the normal 1. I trolled the web for solutions, but I did not find one that addressed any of the stated issues. I attempted to find a solution to reconstruct the hard drives that were found during the install and listed in the Launcher but was unsuccessful in doing so. In summary, I would like to restore the /media directory to the original install which listed the drives correctly and have the drive icons appear in the Launcher as they did at the time of the installation of Ubuntu. I found where all the other icons in the Launcher located in the home Desktop directory but could not find anything that listed the hard drives or the floppy. Ubuntu 12.10 is installed and all the latest updates have been applied.

• Ubuntu 12.04 shut down freezes

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 for last one month without any problem. It was upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10. Recently I needed to replace my hard disk. After replacement I installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on the system. For some days it went ok, but now shutting down from Ubuntu is causing problems. It freezes on the text screen saying acpid=exiting checking for running unattended upgrades. After that I waited for a long time, but it didn't go off and I had to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart the system and booting from Windows and then shutting down from there. This happens every time I shut down my system from Ubuntu. I have seen many posts regarding the same kind of issues but none of the solutions reported there helped me out.

• How many hours can you be really productive per day? How?

  I find that I'm having a great deal of trouble staying alert 8 hours per day. I've heard of people who've negotiated work contracts of just 4 hours/day, arguing that they won't be able to do much more in eight hours. I am often overwhelmed with drowsiness, boredom, distraction. Some days, I seem to blaze through eight hours in a furious explosion of productivity; other days, I hardly get anything done at all. Most days, it's somewhere in between, and I feel bad for wasting a lot of time because I can't muster the concentration to be my best throughout much of the day. I'd like to hear your experiences (tell me I'm not alone!), and, if found, your solutions to this dilemma. Are you productive 8 hours/day almost every day? How?

• How to build a .Net app which runs on desktop and as a Windows Service

  Ok, I hope this is not too much confusing (with my poor English). I want to build a small .Net 4.0 app which monitors several other applications on a Windows Server OR on a regular Windows PC. It will have a WPF GUI with a variety of graphical controls. The app will be used in the following scenarios: If installed on a PC it should run as a “normal” single Windows desktop app If installed on a Server, it should run as a Windows Service. To use/manage the app it must have the same WPF GUI as in scenario 1 and the GUI should be run on the Server or on a remote PC At the moment I consider to write the application logic and connect it to the WPF GUI using a self-hosted WCF Data Service IN BOTH SCENARIOS. Since I’m not a pro developer I suppose it’s possible that I've missed something ;-) Will this work? Are there other/better solutions? Any answer or comment is highly appreciated.

• Does approaching SICP in clojure have a high chance of success? [on hold]

  I am a third year bachelor student in a software engineering program, and I brought up the idea of reading SICP to an adviser to gain a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the principles behind all this software we engineer. He suggested not to learn scheme to complete the book (because it's not as common as modern dialects of lisp) but to do the exercises in clojure instead. My worry is that completing exercises in clojure instead of scheme will make an already difficult book tortuous. If I do attempt the book's exercises in the more modern clojure, will it be difficult to succeed (for example, because I can't find any real solutions, the syntax they teach for scheme is different, etc.), or do you think approaching the book in clojure could be just as successful as approaching it in scheme? I'm really not knowledgeable enough about either clojure or scheme to make an argument about this, so I wanted to know if I should bring it up or not.

• Why is cleverness considered harmful in programming by some people?

  I've noticed a lot of questions lately relating to different abstraction techniques, and answers saying basically that the techniques in question are "too clever." I would think that part of our jobs as programmers is to determine the best solutions to the problems we are given to solve, and cleverness is helpful in doing that. So my question is: are the people who think certain abstraction techniques are too clever opposed to cleverness per se, or is there some other reason for the objection? EDIT: This parser combinator is an example of what I would consider to be clever code. I downloaded this and looked it over for about half an hour. Then I stepped through the macro expansion on paper and saw the light. Now that I understand it, it seems much more elegant than the Haskell parser combinator.

• 12.04 Install Freeze, Blank Cursor Page

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 via a live CD and most recently with the windows installer I found on line. The windows installer seemed to be working; I selected the partitioned portion of the drive on which to install Ubuntu and started the install process. The process freezes on a page with a flashing cursor and nothing else displayed. I have read about similar problems but have not been able to implement any of the solutions people have discussed. Any ideas on what might be hanging up the process, or how to get a better idea of what is causing the problem would be helpful. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution it would be GREATLY appreciated!

• Synonyms for different languages in LibreOffice Writer? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I add English-UK thesaurus in LibreOffice? When setting a text for English US the context menu contains 'Synonyms' This is not the case for the other languages for which I have the spelling installed (English UK, French etc) Can I have the Synonyms option for UK English too, for example? Even that is a problem although there seems to be solutions around for it. Here, for example, (which is a link to here) but after testing it cannot see synonyms for uk. Also this which was reported as a solution is not working anymore it seems. What about other languages? (Please notice that this question is not just about English-UK. I have initially noticed that 'synonyms' where missing in relation to British, but I am asking about how to solve the issue in general or, when there is no general solution, how to solve it on a case-by-case basis.   Ever since I was a kid, I've wondered how they made the 20Q electronic game. In this game, which is it's on device, you think of an object, thing, or animal (e.g. a potato or a donkey), once you mentally choose your thing, the device goes through a series of questions such as: Is it larger than a loaf of bread? Is it found outdoors? Is it used for recreation? For each of the questions you can answer yes, no, maybe, or unknown. The way I've always thought of it to work was with immense, nested conditionals (if statements). But, I don't think that would be very likely as it would be terribly difficult to understand while coding it. I'm not looking for a discussion as SE doesn't allow it; I'm looking for concrete knowledge or solutions.

• Unable configure brightness or colors (12.04)

  I've make a fresh install with Ubuntu 12.04. Unfortunatly i've a problem with colors and brightness settings. Before reinstall of Ubuntu, i used Ubuntu 10.10 with same graphic card, and same nvidia drivers. Note: Only nvidia proprietary drivers works for my GeForce 8600 GTS. Exemple: With nvidia-settings: adjust colors, brightness: no effects With xgamma -gamma 0.5 : no effects Try to use f.lux or redshift: no effects I try solutions found on internet like here but no working to. Any idea ?

• SSL issue and redirects from https to http

  I have a site www.example.com for which i purchased SSL cert and installed. And it was working fine, I also have a subdomain with app.example.com which was not on SSL. Both www.example.com and app.example.com are on same IP address. At later we decided to put SSL only on app.frostbox.com and then i configured SSL with app.frostbox.com and it worked fine, Now the issue is that Google is indexing my site as https://www.example.com/ and when users hits the web , Invalid security warning is issued and when user allow security issue they are shown my app.example.com contents. Note: I have my SSL configuration files in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf The contents of the ssl.conf are below. http://pastebin.com/GCWhpQJq NOTE: I tried solutions in .httaccess but none of those worked. Like redirecting 301 redirects etc
