What are some programming questions (or mistakes) you get wrong only as you get better?

In programming, as many professions, there are mistakes you'll make now that you may not have made as a beginner. For instance, consider pointers: In C++, is there any difference between arrays and pointers? The beginner will say yes, they are two completely different concepts, and treat them as such. The intermediate programmer (having learned that arrays are pointers internally) will tell you no, they are the same thing, and may miss some crucial bugs by interchanging them all willy-nilly. The expert, however, will again say they are different things (ex. see here or here). What other questions/mistakes are like this?

How to change X and Y of a button

I'm using MonoTouch. When I rotate to LandscapeRight/Left I want to change the location of some of my buttons but I'm not having any success. I'm replacing the button.Bounds with a new rectangleF and setting that value in the WillRotate, but that's not working. I am returning true in my ShouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation handler. In principal what I'm trying to do is allow as much as possible to automatically rotate but then fix a couple of buttons that end up in a bad place.

mounting ext4 fs with block size of 65536

I am doing some benchmarking on EXT4 performance on Compact Flash media. I have created an ext4 fs with block size of 65536. however I can not mount it on ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386. (it is already mounting ext4 fs with 4096 bytes of block sizes) According to my readings on ext4 it should allow such big block sized fs. Best IDE macro tools to combat the verbosity of Java syntax for someone with carpal tunnel?

I have a bad case of carpal tunnel so I'm looking for an editor that would make my Java programming less painful (literally!). Does anyone have any recommendations for tools that you can add to Eclipse, Netbeans or other IDEs to produce some of the repetitive code that's common in Java syntax? Overall what would be the best code editor for this purpose? (I'm coding on Ubuntu, in case it matters).

Its all working so now I can chill

Most software houses I have been at have this attitude about their work. Get it done quick and move on. For programmers I find that the chill time is time that can be used to either improve infrastructure, refactor some old code or learn a new language. I would like to know what your throughts about 'chill time' if its the right attitude at all, and if so what to do with it. Is this sort of chilling helpful for a programmer, what are things you do with your own chill time if you adopt this approach to work.

How to crop scanned image using C#?

I have a scanned image of a book page and i need to crop this scan for leaving only page area. I tried to use AForge to detect page borders, but it doesn't work because the space which i need to crop may consist of little "light" areas (due to scanner quality) and edge detector detects borders there. That's why this is bad idea as for me. Could you recommend something? P.S. Please don't tell me to use non-free libraries.

In order to do that I need to:- Set the system-wide proxy to an invalid URL during the test(sounds like a bad idea). Supply an invalid URL to http_proxy. How can I achieve either of the above?

Where to start with C#

Hello fellow programmers. Im a pretty experienced programmer in PHP and mainly web languages but today i have decided i want to start to learn a new language! Im only 21 and I feel as I will never make it in the programming industry without a great set of languages under my belt, So i decided to have a look at C#. Video overlay - need advice

Hi, I'm working on a project and I need some advice. Just some background, Im not a programmer though at times I do some fiddling and I am generally comfortable with more specific terms. Now for the actual issue, I have a folder with 10 small videos (4/7 secs max each) and I would like to display them full screen looping and overlaid. How can I get a file's size in C?

How can I find out the size of a file? I opened with an application written in C. I would like to know the size, because I want to put the content of the loaded file into a string, which I alloc using malloc(). Just writing malloc(10000*sizeof(char)); is IMHO a bad idea.

XMLTask 1.16: Does it work with Ant so far?

I'm trying to use XMLTask 1.16, but, unfortunately, I got error, java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class file, all the time. But if I switch back to XMLTask 1.15, it work fine. Does anyone know how to make XMLTask 1.16 work with Ant.

Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

I am consulting the following book: Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools by Alfred V. Aho, Ravi Sethi, Jeffrey D. Ullman. The thing is that this book is highly theoretical and perplexing to me. I really appreciate the authors. But the point is i am not able to begin my project, as if i am blinded where to go. Need guidance please help.

WPF -- Where do you draw the line between code and XAML?

I'm a long-time C#/.NET programmer but totally new to WPF and the System.Windows.Controls namespace and XAML. The more I learn about it the more I realize that you can do pretty much all of your GUI initialization and event handling glue in either XAML or in code (say C# code or VB.Net code). My question is to those who have been working on WPF for longer and ideally those who have shipped apps with it -- where did you find was the best place to 'draw the line' between XAML and code? Did you use XAML wherever you could? Only where interfacing with non-coding UI designers? Any tips in this area would be extremely helpful to myself and other coders who are just getting into WPF programming and are kind of paralyzed by all the choices we can make!

Multiple developers on a Titanium project

I'm making an iPhone app with Appcelerator Titanium and I want to share the source code with a few more programmers. I will use a SCM repository which at some point might be open to the general public. Now my question is, are there any files which I should not commit to the repository? In project root I can tell that tiapp.xml and mainfest are telling the app GUID, is there any reason for me to keep that private? (this value is also shown many places in the build/ folder) I've added everything in the Resources/ folder. If I skip the build/iphone/build/ folder, will developers still be able to build the project? Side question - When another programmer downloads this code, it seems to me that (s)he has to have the same directory structure as I do? Any workarounds for this?

How to force emacs to use \n instead of \r\n

I have to use windows to write some shell scripts. I decided to use emacs, but I get a weird error when running the script: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like the shebang ends in \r\n instead of just \n. How can I tell emacs to only write \n? I'm in Shell-script major mode. It's quite surprising this isn't fixed by default.

I know selection of element for a purpose is most important thing. what i should judge person ability from his code; from a good written, managed, optimized css or how he wrote class and id names? (specifically this) I have the file /{project}/snippets/EnforceLoginMiddleware.py and I have tried any number of permutations inside MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES to load it as well as googling django snippets install to no avail :( Any help would be grateful :) PS(Why can't I find any documentation or examples on the installation of snippets. How do I safely Debug.Assert in ASP.NET?

Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous. UPDATE: After reading the first replies, I guess the answer hinges on a foolproof way to detect when code is running in a development environment and when it is on a production server, or figuring out how to throw an exception that can't be caught and ignored.
