• C# - Inserting multiple rows using a stored procedure

  I have a list of objects, this list contains about 4 million objects. there is a stored proc that takes objects attributes as params , make some lookups and insert them into tables. what s the most efficient way to insert this 4 million objects to db? How i do : -- connect to sql - SQLConnection ... foreach(var item in listofobjects) { SQLCommand sc = ... // assign params sc.ExecuteQuery(); } THis has been really slow. is there a better way to do this?

• Is there a way to undo Mocha stubbing of any_instance?

  Within my controller specs I am stubbing out valid? for some routing tests, (based on Ryan Bates nifty_scaffold) as follows :- it "create action should render new template when model is invalid" do Company.any_instance.stubs(:valid?).returns(false) post :create response.should render_template(:new) end This is fine when I test the controllers in isolation. I also have the following in my model spec it "is valid with valid attributes" do @company.should be_valid end Again this works fine when tested in isolation. The problem comes if I run spec for both models and controllers. The model test always fails as the valid? method has been stubbed out. Is there a way for me to remove the stubbing of any_instance when the controller test is torn down. I have got around the problem by running the tests in reverse alphabetic sequence to ensure the model tests run before the controllers but I really don't like my tests being sequence dependant.

• ASP.Net MVC Web App not running

  Hi, I developed an ASP.Net MVC v1 web application and it ran fine on our server. The client wanted to move to another server, and the site does not run on the new host's server. The new server specs: Windows 2008 ASP.Net Framework v4 ASP.Net MVC 2 (afaik its included with .Net v4) IIS 7.5 (afaik) Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. My understanding is that it should be backwards compatible. Is the app really trying to run in ASP.Net MVC v1 when v2 is available? I have already tried deploying the MVC .dlls to the Bin folder, but it did not work. I also tried changing all the system.Web.Mvc Version values (in the web.config for the web app) from 1.0.0.0 to 2.0.0.0, which also did not work. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

• Column.DbType affecting runtime behavior

  Hi According to the MSDN docs, the DbType property/attribute of a Column type/element is only used for database creation. Yet, today, when trying to submit data to an IMAGE column on a SQLCE database (not sure if only on CE), I got an exception of 'Data truncated to 8000 bytes'. This was due to the DbType still being defined as VARBINARY(MAX) which SQLCE does not support. Changing the type to IMAGE in the DbType fixes the issue. So what other surprises does Linq2SQL attributes hold in store? Is this a bug or intended? Should I report it to MS? UPDATE After getting the answer from Guffa, I tested it, but it seems for NVARCHAR(10) adding a 11 char length string causes a SQL exception, and not Linq2SQL one. The data was truncated while converting from one data type to another. • Fluent NHibernate + multiple databases

  My project needs to handle three databases, that means three session factories. The thing is if i do something like this with fluent nhibernate: .Mappings(m = m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssembly(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly())) the factories would pick up all the mappings, even the ones that correspond to another database I've seen that when using automapping you can do something like this, and filter by namespace: .Mappings(m = m.AutoMappings.Add(AutoMap.AssemblyOf().Where(t = t.Namespace == "Storefront.Entities"))) I havent found anything like this for fluent mappings, is it possible?? The only solutions I can think of are: either create separate assemblies for each db mapping classes or explicitly adding each of the entities to the factory configuration. I would prefer to avoid both, if possible. Thanks.

  After adding "RelayCommand" class (that uses CommandManager class) into my Silverlight App I've got an error: The name 'CommandManager' does not exist in the current context This class is a member of System.Windows.Input namespace that is in PresentationCore.dll assembly. The problem is that I can't add this dll into my app... I am having a strange assumption: this class (CommmandManager) can't be used in the Silverlight. Am I right? How can I implement MVVM-pattern (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd419663.aspx)? Thanks.

  Are very large TextProperties a burden? Should they be compressed? Say I have a information stored in 2 attributes of type TextProperty in my datastore entities. The strings are always the same length of 65,000 characters and have lots of repeating integers, a sample appearing as follows: entity.pixel_idx = 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5....etc. entity.pixel_color = 2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,...etc. So these above could also be represented using much less storage memory by compressing say using only each integer and the length of its series ( '0,8' for '0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0') but then its takes time and CPU to compress and decompress? Any general ideas? Are there some tricks for testing different attempts to the problem?

However, the following has been the source of some confusion for me and I know the people here will be able to handily clear up the confusion for me. Basically, I would like to finally understand the relationship between any and all of the following terms. Some of the terms I do actually understand pretty well, but some of them are similar in my mind and I would like to once and for all to see their relationships/distinctions laid out all at once.   In a RoR app, I want to specialize ActiveRecord's update_attributes() method in one of my models, extracting some of the attributes for special handling and passing the rest of them to the original update_attributes() method.   I would like to define a key & value in Settings.settings and bind the value by declaration in the XAML (not in the code behind by command). Here's what I've been trying in vain: Create a WPF project "Exp1" with Visual Studio Express 2010. Set one key named "TextFromSettings" to the value "Some Text from Setting". Add the attribute xmlns:p="clr-namespace:Exp1.Properties;assembly=Exp1" to the tag. Add Text="{Binding Path=TextFromSettings, Mode=TwoWay, Source={x:Static p:Settings.Default}}" to the tag Now, the preview window shows the text, however, the compiler fails: "Error 1 Cannot find the type 'Settings'. Note that type names are case sensitive." Where am I going wrong?

  I have to rewrite and greatly modify parts of a legacy COBOL application. The COBOL source-code is available (around 100.000 lines of copy & pasted code mixed with GOTOs). Some more details on the system: It is a general management system controlling transactions, bank management, customer data and employees of the company I work for. The COBOL-powered database is about 4 Terabytes distributed over 50 old HDDs. (But messing around with them is the sysadmins job) They are using COBOL85 only. Now I have two options: Rewrite and refactor 50% of the old COBOL system, or use X86 assembly. Should I use X86 assembler or COBOL?

• Generating dynamic C# based on textual data into the runtime?

  Is there a quick and easy way to load textual C# into a program. I would like to load the LINQ from the database as an Expression and run it against some data (SQL or Array/List don't mind). I know I can do it using the C# CodeDom/ExpressionTree builder with Assembly Loading and Creating AppDomains, but this seems very long winded. Is there an easier way. I thought with the advent of .net 3.5 that the ExpressionTree would come to my aid, but I now realise that I have to write a parser to use this. Maybe there is a new trick in 4.0? Something along the lines of a dynamic languages Parse would be great. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  Hello, I'm writing an application that runs "things" to a schedule. Idea being that the database contains assembly, method information and also the parameter values. The timer will come along, reflect the method to be run, add the parameters and then execute the method. Everything is fine except for the parameters. So, lets say the method accepts an ENUM of CustomerType where CustomerType has two values of CustomerType.Master and CustomerType.Associate. EDIT I don't the type of parameter that will be getting passed in. ENUM used as an example END OF EDIT We want to run Method "X" and pass in parameter "CustomerType.Master". In the database, there will be a varchar entry of "CustomerType.Master". How do I convert the string "CustomerType.Master" into a type of CustomerType with a value of "Master" generically? • iPhone: Grouping records in multiple UITableView views

  Let me first say, I know how to create sections and group records within a UITableView. What I am wanting to do is something similar to creating a photo album. So, I have all my data objects coming from core data, and, I want to be able to create a custom group, such as "My Trip to Mexico" and "First Birthday". Then, the user should be able to add objects/records into new sections/albums. So, basically the user is creating custom sections with their own custom names, and then choosing what records should go into that section/album. So, I am just wondering what is the best way to do this? I am thinking that I would just create some extra attributes for my core data model. Or, would I create a whole new "Album Section" object, and somehow use that? Point me in the right direction. :)

• Looking for design patterns to isolate framework layers from each other

  Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in "isolating" framework objects from each other (Spring, Hibernate, Struts). I'm beginning to see design "problems" where an object from one framework gets used in another object from a different framework. My fear is we're creating tightly coupled objects. For instance, I have an application where we have a DynaActionForm with several attributes...one of which is a POJO generated by the Hibernate Tools. This POJO gets used everywhere...the JSP populates data to it, the Struts Action sends it down to a Service Layer, the DAO will persist it...ack! Now, imagine that someone decides to do a little refactoring on that POJO...so that means the JSP, Action, Service, DAO all needs to be updated...which is kind of painful...There has got to be a better way?! There's a book called Core J2EE Patterns: Best Practices and Design Strategies (2nd Edition)...is this worth a look? I don't believe it touches on any specific frameworks, but it looks like it might give some insight on how to properly layer the application... Thanks!

  Hello, I am using the .NET 4.0 client profile for my app and I run a dual core with 4 GB Ram and a fast hard disk. nothing big is done at the start just showing a generic List in a wpf listview. How can I make the cold start faster of my assembly ? I have done now again a cold start and run the windowsapplication.exe in my \obj\x86\Debug folder and my harddisk run like hell and it took 10,5 seconds ??? What is wrong? The warm start after the cold one took 1 second. Java 6 apps has not that problem, not at all just to compare...
