How to deal with presence or not of xml namespaces using xslt.

I have some XML/TEI documents, and i'm writing an XSLT 2.0 to extract their content. Almost all TEI documents has no namespace, but one has the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"). So all documents has the same aspect, with unqulified tags like <TEI> or <teiHeader>, but if I try to extract the content, all works with "non-namespaced-documents", but nothing (of course) is extracted from the namespaced-document. So i used the attribute xpath-default-namespace="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" and now (of course) the only document working is the namespaced one. I can't edit documents at all, so what I'm asking is if there's a way to change dynamically the xpath-default-namespace in order to make work xpaths like //teiHeader both with namespaced and non-namespaced documents

According to this blog post, the xsi:type attribute is special and can't be accessed by usal keywords/functions. How can I do it? Find the xmlHttpRequest resource in aspx page

I'm trying to find an xmlHttpRequest or similar resource that I can query directly to obtain an xml file for my own purposes. At this site it is possible to browse a Google Map mashup with markers. Unfortunately it is only possible to view all markers at a small view range, whereas I simply want to obtain all the information at once for the entire state. Using the firebug console in firefox I can enter the following javascript line to obtain the xml that I desire: document.getElementById("stationXML").value I tracked this document element down to an <input> tag, but I can't figure out how that input is set. Thanks in advance for your help!

Would it be a good idea to work on letting people add arrays of numbers in javascript?

I am a very mathematically oriented programmer, and I happen to be doing a lot of java script these days. I am really disappointed in the math aspects of javascript: the Math object is almost a joke because it has so few methods you can't use ^ for exponentiation the + operator is very limited, you cant add array's of numbers or do scalar multiplication on arrays Now I have written some pretty basic extensions to the Math object and have considered writing a library of advanced Math features, amazingly there doesn't seem to be any sort of standard library already out even for calculus, although there is one for vectors and matricies I was able find. The notation for working with vectors and matricies is really bad when you can't use the + operator on arrays, and you cant do scalar multiplication. For example, here is a hideous expression for subtracting two vectors, A - B: Math.vectorAddition(A,Math.scalarMultiplication(-1,B)); I have been looking for some kind of open-source project to contribute to for awhile, and even though my C++ is a bit rusty I would very much like to get into the code for V8 engine and extend the + operator to work on arrays, to get scalar multiplication to work, and possibly to get the ^ operator to work for exponentiation. These things would greatly enhance the utility of any mathematical javascript framework. I really don't know how to get involved in something like the V8 engine other than download the code and start working on it. Of course I'm afraid that since V8 is chrome specific, that without browser cross-compatibility a fundamental change of this type is likely to be rejected for V8. I was hoping someone could either tell me why this is a bad idea, or else give me some pointers about how to proceed at this point to get some kind of approval to add these features. Thanks!

A Question About Embedding HTML In PHP

Hello all Some time ago I read a posting on a board where the person was talking poorly about people that have HTML embedded/within their PHP. I do quite a bit of PHP development but I still interleave HTML and PHP in the same document. Is there a better way to do this, am I doing it wrong? I know that in JSP/JSF they use an XML document with namespaces to insert their HTML code so I was wondering if there was a similar function that PHP uses that I should be taking advantage of. How to select a names from a column MS Excel 2007

Hey guys, I have an Excel document which has a list of students and their group names. I have another sheet within the the same excel document which is called comments. In this sheet, I would like to have a list of individual team names listed. There are 65 students and 14 defined groups. Is there a way to select the 14 group names, without repitition? Cell B3-B67 have the student names. Cell C3-C67 have the team names. The team names are entered against each student. I know in SQL I could use something like select distinct(team_name) but in Excel, how can I replicate this? Cheers, Alks.

Architectural and Design Challenges with SOA

With all of the hype about service oriented architecture (SOA) primarily through the use of web services, not much has been said about potential issues of using SOA in the design of an application. I am personally a fan of SOA, but it is not the solution for every application. Proper evaluation should be done on all requirements and use cases prior to deciding to go down the SOA road. It is important to consider how your application/service will handle the following perils as it executes. Example Challenges of SOA Network Connectivity Issues Handling Connectivity Issues Longer Processing/Transaction Times How many of us have had issues visiting our favorite web sites from time to time? The same issue will occur when using service based architecture especially if it is implemented using web services. Forcing applications to access services via a network connection introduces a lot of new failure points to the application. Potential failure points include: DNS issues, network hardware issues, remote server issues, and the lack of physical network connections. When network connectivity issues do occur, how are the service clients are implemented is very important. Should the client wait and poll the service until it is accessible again? If so what is the maximum wait time or number of attempts it should retry. Due to the fact of services being distributed across a network automatically increase the responsiveness of client applications due to the fact that processing time must now also include time to send and receive messages from called services. This could add nanoseconds to minutes per each request based on network load and server usage of the service provider. If speed highly desirable quality attribute then I would consider creating components that are hosted where the client application is located. References: Rader, Dave. (2002). Precising definition of programming paradigm

Wikipedia defines programming paradigm thus: a fundamental style of computer programming which is echoed in the descriptive text of the paradigms tag on this site. I find this a disappointing definition. Anyone who knows the words programming and paradigm could do about that well without knowing anything else about it. There are many styles of computer programming at many level of abstraction; within any given programming paradigm, multiple styles are possible. For example, Bob Martin says in Clean Code (13), Consider this book a description of the Object Mentor School of Clean Code. The techniques and teachings within are the way that we practice our art. We are willing to claim that if you follow these teachings, you will enjoy the benefits that we have enjoyed, and you will learn to write code that is clean and professional. But don't make the mistake of thinking that we are somehow "right" in any absolute sense. Thus Bob Martin is not claiming to have the correct style of Object-Oriented programming, even though he, if anyone, might have some claim to doing so. But even within his school of programming, we might have different styles of formatting the code (K&R, etc). There are many styles of programming at many levels. Sp how can we define programming paradigm rigorously, to distinguish it from other categories of programming styles? Fundamental is somewhat helpful, but not specific. How can we define the phrase in a way that will communicate more than the separate meanings of each of the two words—in other words, how can we define it in a way that will provide additional meaning for someone who speaks English but isn't familiar with a variety of paradigms?

Ajax to read updated values from XML

I am creating file upload progress bar. I have a CGI script which copies the data, and here I increment the progress bar value by ONE after certain iterations. I am storing the incremented value in XML file (I also tried using plain text file). On the other side I have ajax reading incremented value from xml and depending on that it increments the DIV element. However, what happens here is, it seems to me that although the ajax reads all the incremented values but it processes it after the CGI has finished execution. That is progress bar starts execution once the file copying and other stuff in CGI is completed. What's a good entity hierarchy for a 2D game?

I'm in the process of building a new 2D game out of some code I wrote a while ago. The object hierarchy for entities is like this: Scene (e.g. MainMenu): Contains multiple entities and delegates update()/draw() to each Entity: Base class for all things in a scene (e.g. MenuItem or Alien) Sprite: Base class for all entities that just draw a texture, i.e. don't have their own drawing logic Does it make sense to split up entities and sprites up like that? I think in a 2D game, the terms entity and sprite are somewhat synonymous, right? But I do believe that I need some base class for entities that just draw a texture, as opposed to drawing themselves, to avoid duplication. Most entities are like that. One weird case is my Text class: It derives from Sprite, which accepts either the path of an image or an already loaded texture in its constructor. Text loads a texture in its constructor and passes that to Sprite. Can you outline a design that makes more sense? Or point me to a good object-oriented reference code base for a 2D game? I could only find 3D engine code bases of decent code quality, e.g. Doom 3 and HPL1Engine.

Upload a file to SharePoint through the built-in web services

What is the best way to upload a file to a Document Library on a SharePoint server through the built-in web services that version WSS 3.0 exposes? Following the two initial answers... We definitely need to use the Web Service layer as we will be making these calls from remote client applications. The WebDAV method would work for us, but we would prefer to be consistent with the web service integration method. There is additionally a web service to upload files, painful but works all the time. Are you referring to the “Copy” service? We have been successful with this service’s CopyIntoItems method. Would this be the recommended way to upload a file to Document Libraries using only the WSS web service API? I have posted our code as a suggested answer.

Do programmers need a union? [closed]

In light of the acrid responses to the intellectual property clause discussed in my previous question, I have to ask: why don't we have a programmers' union? There are many issues we face as employees, and we have very little ability to organize and negotiate. Could we band together with the writers', directors', or musicians' guilds, or are our needs unique? Has anyone ever tried to start one? If so, why did it fail? (Or, alternatively, why have I never heard of it, despite its success?) later: Keith has my idea basically right. I would also imagine the union being involved in many other topics, including: legal liability for others' use/misuse of our work, especially unintended uses evaluating the quality of computer science and software engineering higher education programs -- unlike many other engineering disciplines, we are not required to be certified on receiving our Bachelor's degrees evangelism and outreach -- especially to elementary school students certification -- not doing it, but working with the companies like ISC(2) and others to make certifications meaningful and useful continuing education -- similar to previous conferences -- maintain a go-to list of organizers and other resources our members can use I would see it less so as a traditional trade union, with little emphasis on: pay -- we tend to command fairly good salaries outsourcing and free trade -- most of use tend to be pretty free-market oriented working conditions -- we're the only industry with Aeron chairs being considered anything like "standard"

Live chat solutions

What good live chat/live help solutions are available (preferably for use on a site hosted on a LAMP stack and free)? I'm looking for a way to allow our sales and customer service reps to talk directly with visitors to our site. I've looked at phpopenchat, but it looks very unpolished. The only other free live chat app I've come across looked egregious. The aesthetics and UI design alone made me shudder to think what the underlying code might look like. This isn't a critical feature, and it wouldn't be hard to code up myself, so I'm not really looking for commercial software or paid services (unless there's a really compelling reason to use them). I'm just wondering if any other webmasters have come across a satisfactory free/open source solution for providing live customer support on their website. As a side note, live voice chat would also be an option, but it has to be be designed (or customizable) for customer support rather than a public chatroom. Edit: Looking at the responses, it looks like there probably aren't going to be many free solutions for this type of business-oriented chat solution, so feel free to post answers even if they are commercial solutions as long as they're a good value. Also feel free to post any alternate live support solutions (such as the Skype recommendation) that could be in someway integrated with a website. This will give me a good lay of the land for what people are actually using for live support, and I think will be more helpful to others reading this question.

Sharepoint 2007: Disabling Edit/Read Only mode?

If I open a doc in read only mode I'm able to press save and then it opens up a save as box and the default directory is the directory on the sharepoint server and if you press save you save it to the server. This actually makes the whole process not really "read only" mode since I could actually update the document. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that if someone chooses read only there is no way possible to updload any changes back to the sharepoint site? Also, it has been suggested as a solution to get rid of the edit/read only option so that people have to check out the document. Is there a way to remove the edit/read only option on documents?

I am trying to create an application to print documents over the web. I have created my document, and made a web page with a meta refresh tag, along the lines of this: <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="3;http://example.com/download.epl2" /> I specify that the document has a content-type of application/x-epl2, and I have associated .epl2 files on my computer with a program that silently sends them to the printer. I have put the website into my trusted sites zone. Currently Internet Explorer pops up the "Open, Save, Cancel" dialog box with no option to automatically open the file. Is there a setting in IE6/7/8 that I can use to have IE just open the file without prompting?

Use fileupload as template field in a details view

I have an admin page where a user will select a document path and add that path to a certain column of a database. I am using a fileupload on the page where they can find the document and copy the path and then paste it into the details view. How to break the "php is a bad language" paradigm? [closed]

PHP is not a bad language (or at least not as bad as some may suggest). I had teachers that didn't even know PHP was object oriented until I told them. I've had clients that immediately distrust us when we say we are PHP developers and question us for not using chic languages and frameworks such as Django or RoR, or "enterprise and solid" languages such as Java and ASP.NET. Facebook is built on PHP. There are plenty of solid projects that power the web like Joomla and Drupal that are used in the enterprise and governments. There are frameworks and libraries that have some of the best architectures I've seen across all languages (Symfony 2, Doctrine). PHP has the best documentation I've seen and a big community of professionals. PHP has advanced OO features such as reflection, interfaces, let alone that PHP now supports horizontal reuse natively and cleanly through traits. There are bad programmers and script kiddies that give PHP a bad reputation, but power the PHP community at the same time, and because it is so easy to get stuff done PHP you can often do things the wrong way, granted, but why blame the language?. Now, to boil this down to an actual answerable question: what would be a good and solid and short and sweet argument to avoid being frowned upon and stop prejudice in one fell swoop and defend your honor when you say you are a PHP developer?. (free cookie with teh whipped cream to those with empirical evidence of convincing someone —client or other— on the spot) P.S.: We use Symfony, and the code ends being beautiful and maintainable

pgf/tikz: String Symbols as Input Coordinates

Hi all, I'm new to pgf so i was trying out some examples from the pgfplot manual. One example is especially relevant for my current task but, alas, it would not compile. Here is the code: \documentclass[11pt]{article} \usepackage{tikz} \usepackage{pgfplots} \begin{document} \begin{tikzpicture} \begin{axis}[symbolic x coords={a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i}] \addplot+[smooth] coordinates { (a,42) (b,50) (c,80) (f,60) (g,62) (i,90)}; \end{axis} \end{tikzpicture} \end{document} the compiler quits with the following error: ! Package PGF Math Error: Could not parse input 'a' as a floating point number, sorry. The unreadable part was near 'a'.. I have no clue how to correct this behavior. Other plots (smooth, scatter, bar), which contain only numerical data compile fine. Could anybody give me a hint? Cheers K.
