• 3ds Max error dialog: "Instancing not supported for this action"

  "Instancing not supported for this action” is the dialog I get. My favorite part is that, according to google and yahoo, apparently i am the only person in the history of mankind to experience these words together in this order, let along get this message from Max. Thanks, autodesk, for putting this dialog in special for me! So I’ve created my model (nws) and was setting up a Skin Wrap. Selected "Face Deformation", added the base-skin for weight, checked “weight all points”. . . clicked “convert to skin” and got that dialog. My model doesn’t have a whole lot of elements to it, I had a left and right appendage that came from a base model (skyrim). so, i did a clonecopy of all 3 of my elements, just to be sure nothing was instanced… and VOILA! Same error message. the only other elements are an imported NIF mesh and skeleton. Any idea where this is coming from or how I can make it go away so that I can export my mesh?

  Message is this: "Power supply surges detected during previous power on" "ASUS Auto-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply" When i went to sleep yesterday and woke up, when i moved the mouse to go back from screen saver, it didn't do anything. So i left it, i came back from class and got this issue. (I didn't restart before going to class... So the screen was left like it was) Today there was a power cut in half of my house. (Computer is on the side that it didn't cut...) Voltages are fine, like always. How do i remove message? It's just maybe sensor glitch? Even disabling the Anti-Surge my PC "shuts down" (Only monitor, but maybe components do too.)

• Best way to indicate more results available

  We have a service to return messages. We want to limit the number returned, either allowing the caller to specify the max number to return, or else to use an internal hard limit. We also have thought it would be nice to include in the response whether more messages are available. The "best" way to go about this is not clear. Here are some ideas so far: Only set the "more messages" indicator if the user did not specify a max limit, and the internal max limit was hit. Same as #1 except that "more messages" indicator set regardless of whether the internal hard limit is hit, or the user-specified limit is hit. Same as #1 (or #2) except that we internally read limit + 1 records, but only return limit records, so we know "for sure" there is at least one additional message rather than "maybe" there are additional messages. Do away with the "more messages" flag, as it is confusing and unnecessary. Instead force the user to keep calling the API until it returns no messages. Change "more messages" indicator to something more akin to an EOF indicator, only set when the last message is known to have been retrieved and returned. What do you think is the best solution? (Doesn't have to be one of the above choices.) I searched and couldn't find a similar question already asked. Hopefully this is not "too subjective".

• Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack "The converter failed to open the file" error & "This is a pre-release version"

  What issues have people encountered with older OS's (2000, XP) and olders versions of Microsoft Office (2000, XP, 2003) with the 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack'? I have a couple of Windows 2000 client PC's encountering different errors when attempting to open .docx or .xlsx documents, some with Office XP and the others with Office 2003. Reading through forums it appears that the different versions of the compatibility pack, not all were compatible with Windows 2000 (versions 3 & 4 are not). There are also Service Packs for the Compatibility Pack. With these Windows 2000 clients, it seems i need the Compatibility Pack version 2, then to install the Service Packs, yet i'm unable to find a link for version 2 of it. First error message: "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibilty Pack and can open pre-release Office 2007 files only." Is solved below. Second error message: "The converter failed to open the file." My troubleshooting is still on-going.

• Ubuntu installation on iMac

  I have an iMac configured as follows - Screen 27" CPU 3.4 GHz i7 Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 1024 MB I downloaded Ubuntu version 11.10 64 bit ISO and burnt that to both DVD and USB stick as per the instructions on Ubuntu's download page. Neither will boot. Symptoms are as follows - DVD: When the iMac is restarted and booted from DVD (labelled Windows which isn't mentioned in Ubuntu's website instructions) one line is displayed against a black screen displaying a message about the developer and date. After 5 minutes the message hangs and the DVD ceases to spin. USB Stick: Strangely I have to select the EFI boot CD icon which appears after holding down the Alt key. A text menu appears offering me to try Ubuntu without installing. I select this and the screen goes blank and stays blank. Any ideas? Lastly, after writing Ubuntu to DVD and USB stick, neither could be read by OSX making the instructions to eject them as per Ubuntu website's instructions useless. This might help? Thanks, Shane.

• Should my dropdown of recently used items show items I no longer have access to

  We are implementing a client for our document management system. Part of this is the checkin screen where one of the fields a user chooses is the folder where the document should be checked into. In our original system, this was represented with a combobox where a user could hand type a folder path or select a path from a list of 5 folders they'd recently used for checking. It is possible that between the time they used the folder and the time they are doing the new checkin the user will no longer have access to the folder. At present, we still show the folder as an option and then, if the user chooses that folder, display an error message when the user submits the check in. We are thinking of removing these recently used folders the user doesn't have access to (we'll make a check when the form is instantiated) because why show an option if we know it will cause a failure (and another dialog message the user has to OK). However, an opposite opinion is that if we remove those folders, the users will think the system has "forgotten" their recent choices and will lose trust in what they are using. I'd like to get some opinions on the better user experience for this problem.

• Save .mov file with applescript

  I've installed the Perian addon for Quicktime so it can open .flv files, and then I can save them as .m4v or .mov. I'm trying to make an Applescript to convert from .flv to .m4v automatically by using this tutorial and butchering their example applescript file, which normally converts ChemDraw files (.cdx, .cml, .mol) to .tiff, so that it instead uses Quicktime to save the .flv files as .m4v. When I try to use it, though, I get an error "QuickTime Player got an error: document 1 doesn't understand the save message". My save message is currently: save first document in target_path as ".m4v" which looks like the QuickTime dictionary's instructions: save specifier : The document(s) or window(s) to save. [as saveable file format] : The file format to use. I've also tried "m4v", without the period, and still get the error. Is my Save direction wrong, or is it probably an error from trying to use Quicktime instead of the original ChemDraw? I tried to change references to .cdx, .cml, .mol, .tiff, and ChemDraw to .flv, .m4v, and QuickTime respectively, but maybe it's more complicated than that? I would, in fact, appreciate any example showing how to save an application file (ex: a TextEdit .rtf or .txt), as I can't seem to get any kind of file to save using applescript.

• MVVM - child windows and data contexts

  Should a child window have it's own data context (View-Model) or use the data context of the parent? More broadly, should each View have its own View-Model? Are there are any rules to guide making that decision? What if the various View-Models will be accessing the same Model? I haven't been able to find any consistent guidance on my question. The MS definition of MVVM appears to be silent on child windows. For one example, I have created a warning message notification View. It really didn't need a data context since it was passed the message to display. But if I needed to fancy it up a bit, I would have tapped the parent's data context. I have run into another scenario that needs a child window and is more complicated than the notification box. The parent's View-Model is already getting cluttered, so I had planned on generating a dedicated VM for the child window. But I can't find any guidance on whether this is a good idea or what the potential consequences may be. FWIW, I happen to be working in Silverlight, but I don't know that this question is strictly a Silverlight issue.

I already have MS SQL Server Express 2008 installed and all I want to do is to install the SP1 however I get following error message even though all features are selected, it still tells me to select one or more features: Also just for information, when I open the SQL Server Configuration Manager to manage my SQL Server Services, the following error message is displayed: If anyone who has faced this and has a solution then please let me know, as my aim is to install management studio, but for that I must have SP1 installed at least, and I'm stuck at that point. • Is switch-case over enumeration bad practice?

  I have an enumeration with the commands Play, Stop and Pause for a media player. In two classes I do a switch-case over the received commands. The player runs in a different thread and I deliver the commands in a command queue to the thread. If I generate class diagrams the enumeration has dependencies all over the place. Is there a nicer way to deal with the commands? If I would change/extend the enumeration, I would have to change several classes. (Its not super important to keep the player extensible, but I try to write nice software.)

• Push or Pull Input Data In the Game Logic?

  In the process of preparing my game for networking I'm adding a layer of seperation between the physical input (mouse/keyboard) and the actual game "engine"/logic. All input that has any relation to the game logic is wrapped inside action objects such as BuildBuildingAction. I was thinking of having an action processing layer that would determine what to do with the input. This layer could then be set up to either just pass the actions locally to the game engine or send it via sockets to the network server depending on whether the game was single- or multiplayer. In network games it would make sense that the player's actions should be sent to the server, but should the game logic be pulling (polling?) the data through some sort of interface or should the action processing layer be adding the actions to an input queue in the game logic code?

  I am trying to tune a high message traffic system running on Solaris. The architecture is a large number (600) of clients which connect via TCP to a big Solaris server and then send/receive relatively small messages (.5 to 1K payload) at high rates. The goal is to minimize the latency of each message processed. I suspect that the TCP stack of the server is getting overwhelmed by all the traffic. What are some commands/metrics that I can use to confirm this, and in case this is true, what is the best way to alleviate this bottleneck?

• Getting a lot of postmaster undeliverable notices for non-existent users

  I've had my domain (straightpathsql.com) for a few years now. I host my e-mail with Google Accounts for business and have for awhile. ALl of the sudden in the past week I am starting to get a lot of postmaster delivery fail notices from various domains, most of them involving bogus e-mail addresses at my domain ([email protected], for example)... My assumption here is that someone is trying to relay on some other host (not my hosts which are secure through google apps for business, I presume) and there isn't much I can do to stop it. But I just want to make sure there isn't something else I need to be looking at here.. An example delivery fail notice is below.. I know nothing of those addresses below and they look like garbage... (Quick edit: the reason I get these messages is I set myself up as a catch all, so it doesn't matter what e-mail you send a note to at my domain, I'll get it if the account isn't setup... All of the failure messages are sent to bogus addresses on my domain) The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable. • Scalable solution for website polling

  I'm looking to add push notifications to one of my iOS apps. The app is a client for a website which doesn't offer push notifications. What I've come up with so far: App sends a message to home server when transitioning to background, asking the server to start polling the website for the logged in user. The home server starts a new process to poll for that user. Polling happens every so many seconds / minutes. When the user returns to the iOS app, the app sends a message to the home server to stop polling. The home server kills the process polling for the user. Repeat. The problem is that this soon becomes stupid: 100s of users means 100s of different processes. It's just not scalable in the slighest. What I've written so far is in PHP, using CURL to do the polling and I started with PHP a few days ago, so maybe I'm missing something obvious that could help me with this. Some advice would be great.

• Strange email coming from/to my computer

  I'm running smtp4dev on my machine to trap anything going in/out of my computer on port 25 for testing purposes. Every so often this email gets trapped and I have no idea what it's from. I have Microsoft Security Essentials running on my machine and it hasn't identified and viruses or anything so I'm not sure what's going on. • 12.04 - How do I Fix Grub Error 15 on New Dual Boot Install

  I just installed 12.04 to Dual Boot (separate partitions) with an existing Win 7. Upon reboot after install things freeze after Grub 1.5 with a Grub Error 15 message. Is there any easy way to fix this? (I am posting this from my second computer) UPDATE: I managed to boot into both 12.04 and Win7 using BIOS: Selected the disk with the Win7 'C' Partition: resulted in the same error message Rebooted, tried the disk with the Ubuntu Partitions: *Grub Menu loaded: Managed to boot 12.04, rebooted, used BIOS again: Managed to boot Win 7 So, I have access to my computer again (thru BIOS), but this has been a pretty crappy install experience. Garth I used the the Final release 12.04 Ubuntu install disk, reformatted all Linux partitions, and expected a simple clean install. Other than specifying the Ubuntu Partitions, I did a basic install of 12.04. No way I did do anything to get this crap error failure! I have no idea why my install resulted in a Grub-15 error. But I have another Ubuntu based distribution on my laptop (BackTrack linux), which is also 10.04, but it has the b43 driver installed and the overall performance is MUCH better. So I would like to install it on this OS too, but even google didn't help me. So my question is how to install the latest b43 driver on my Ubuntu?

• Asus EeePC X101CH Touchpad issue

  I have an Asus EeePC X101CH that the touchpad was uninstalled from (I saw the uninstall dialog boxes open). After a restart there was a PS/2 mouse under View Hidden Devices in Device Manager that wasn't installed properly (I'm assuming that this is the touchpad). Going to the Asus website and downloading the drivers (V15.3.27.1), I get the error message "Synaptics device not found!". I tried the other driver Version v9.1.7.7 for the Sentelic TouchPad as well (when run it appears to be the driver for the finger sensing) and got the error message "This driver version is inapplicable for the touch pad. Please check the devices on the system and install the suitable driver.". What's my next step? Thanks!

  It may seem obvious but it’s worth stating again. The idea that mobile users are going to read lots of user assistance on their devices is just wrong. So, Jakob Nielsen’s post Mobile Content Is Twice as Difficult serves as a timely reminder for anyone thinking of putting manuals as a form of user assistance onto mobile phones. There is also an excellent post on UXMag.com, explaining that one of the ways to screw up with your iPhone app is to throw an old-style user manual into the user experience: 10 Surefire Ways to Screw Up Your iPhone App.   (Image copyright and referenced from UX Magazine 2010)   Instead, user assistance  alternatives—if any at all—include one-time tours, graphics, in-context instructions, and so on. Not so sure that importing “humor” and “personality” work so well in the enterprise app space, myself. However, the message is clear: iPhone users don’t read manuals. Great message. Users will figure it out, and if they can’t, well then your app’s UX is a problem and the app will fail. Shame some teams are obsessed with figuring out ways to port existing manuals to mobile platforms without any thought for the UX. Razorfish’s Scatter/Gather blog says it all: One thing that is particularly discouraging, most material currently available on “Creating Content for the iPad” or similar themes turns out to be about getting traditional content onto, or into, the iPad. Now, manuals for non-end users in PDF format on eReaders is a different matter. I have research on that, but it’s for another post.   We are running exim version 4.72 I'm using bounce_message_file to customize our bounce messages, like desribed in the documentation Within this bounce message template I can access various variables like $message_exim_id, etc. Is there also a way to access the list of the failing addresses (maybe with their error messages) in such a variable (as string, list,... whatever) or in any other way? It does not really matter how and in which format they are, I just want access them within the bounce message template file. (I am referencing to the failed addresses usually listed automatically after the line "This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:") Thank you very much for your help!

• Hide Outlook envelope in system tray

  When I get a new email in Outlook 2003 I get two notifications; one is the envelope in the system tray, and one is the fading noticiation message in the lower right corner. If I click the notification message, the envelope will never disappear, even if all emails are read. If Outlook is restarted the envelope disappears. If I right click the envelope and choose "Hide envelope" I have to go into the settings and set the Show envelope option to true again to see the envelope. I want the envelope, but only when there are any unread emails in my inbox. How do I fix this?

• Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

  We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them.
