  • Removing BIOS Post Messages

    - by Steve
I am working on a project where a standard x86 desktop system will boot and run a single program until it is shut down. I would like to remove all the bios post messages so that it looks a little more "finished" and cleaner when it starts up. I was hoping that there might by a standard implementation/terms to know about so I can avoid having to dig through every manual to see if there are options, or get some advice on a standard set of tools I should be using. I was thinking about getting a board that has an image that covers up the post messages until you press a key and trying to customize it to all black, but it's not clear if this is a good direction. I started looking for OEM motherboards but my searches were filled with standard commercial stuff, or seemed to be way to big for my toy project. What is the best way to go about removing all the bios post messages and just having a blank screen or "loading" message until OS loads?

  • Cross-domain structure of the site

    - by Coreal
I have a web site on which I wish to enable instant messaging via IRC. Now I am about to buy VPS to host the ircd on. So, I will have two servers: one is for the web site and the other is for the ircd. The question is how to use the web site's domain name for the ircd?

  • scp stalls and ssh sessions freeze up (but eventually start again)

    - by coleifer
I am running ubuntu on various computers on a home wireless network. Some are on 9.04x64, some 10.04x64 and one 9.04x32. Running scp with a large file starts out at 2.1 mbps and drops down to about 200k, stalling and dropping until the transfer is complete. I've noticed this when I have a secure shell open on any of these servers as well. I have tried this with 2 different routers, both brand new, different brands.

  • Solaris kstat sdX disk nread counter value decreasing

    - by mykhal
I get strange disk io nread (bytes read) counter values (from kstat) on Solaris. Example of collected nread value for sd6 disk collected in 30s interval (command kstat -n sd6): 768579416 768579416 768579416 768579416 768579416 768579416 768579416 768496080 768496080 768496080 768496080 768496080 768496080 768496080 768496080 768530896 768530896 768447560 768447560 768447560 One would suppose that the relative read bytes count can't be negative.. I wonder what can couse this situation and whether there is more reliable disk io data available. Some info about the system: machine:~ # uname -a SunOS machine 5.10 Generic_127112-11 i86pc i386 i86pc machine:~ # cat /etc/release Solaris 10 11/06 s10x_u3wos_10 X86 Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. • What logs should I collect from a Windows server network?

    - by Cygnus X
I'm setting up a log collection server for my Windows network (about 30 servers ranging from 2003 to 2008 R2, and about 300 vista/7 clients), and I was wondering which logs are good to collect and which ones are a waste of time. I'm going to collect the obvious ones (system, security, event, firewall, and role specific logs) but are there any others I should be worried about? I'm using Splunk if that helps answer the question.

  • Change Firefox theme locally with CSS (without any extension)

    - by Email
I have some modifications I want to make WITHOUT installing extensions. eg: max width of tab and height of menu, In previous versions you could have it done via: about:config ->browser.tabs.tab.maxWidth Since FF4 it should be done with CSS. Now I searched the default theme: C:\Users\wetcat\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\feriz.default and C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox In the second I could find the extension - theme but without any CSS. In the AppData I couldn't find any CSS or theme folder. WHERE is the file to create or alter the CSS?? I'm using Firefox 11.

  • Where is the best place to label a server?

    - by Celeritas
There isn't much room on server chassis and I'm wondering where a label with the servers name should go? Is there any other information in addition to the name that should go on the label? Does it make sense to label each hard drive in a server or is that not necessary? There certainly is overkill, when I worked at Big Blue labeling was a huge source of bureaucracy, even a projector needed to be labelled and have it's whereabouts routinely reported.

  • What is the Your Favorite Managed Anti-Virus for a Small Workgroup (under 25 Machines)? [closed]

    - by arrocharJames
I am a solo IT employee for a small company that has a couple of servers and 10 workstations (Windows and Mac, Macs do not run AV software). I want to centrally manage Anti-Virus for all the computers with some sort of control panel. I have been using Symantec Corporate versions for years, but the latest version (Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x) is totally over-complicated, and aimed at enterprises with 1000s of computers. Can anyone recommend something reliable, centrally managed, and simple?

  • Git push from post-receive

    - by meka
I have two servers, let's call them first and second. First one is where the real development is done, and second one should be the replica. What I would like to do is put "git push" in post-receive, but there is one problem. Post-receive is executed as the user doing git push to first server, so I can't chmod 600 ssh key with no pass. What is the best practice for this? Thanx!

  • Network share permission issues

    - by JL
I have an IIS server running a site, appPool is running under local system, this is done because its easier to have full permissions to certificates and other file based resources on the local server. Problem is when I try write or copy a file to a network share, permissions are obviously not in place on the remote system for the IIS server local system. Is it possible to grant permissions on the remote system to include read/write or even full access to the IIS servers local system account?

  • What is /usr/bin/[ ?

    - by Josh
I was just poking around in /usr/bin and I found an ELF binary file called [. /usr/bin/[. I have never heard of this file and my first thought was that it was a clever way of hiding a program, possibly a trojan. However it's present on all my CentOS servers and seems to have no manual entry. I can hazard a guess as to what it is but I was looking for a more authoritative answer...

  • ESXi VM NTP Server

    - by jstorch
Hello all. We need to setup an internal NTP server. Because this server will pretty much ONLY be a time server I was thinking of just creating a VM for it. However, Googling around it appears that there there might be serious clock drifting issues with VM servers. So, is running our NTP server in a VM a completely dumb idea? Thanks, John

  • If I use a proxy server, can my computer bypass the ISP?

    - by Torpido
If somebody is using some kind of proxy server to connect to the internet, does their computer connects to the ISP first and then to the proxy server, or does it connect to the proxy server first and then to the ISP? Some of my friends are able to get free internet on their mobile using some Proxy servers. I am not asking you for free internet, I am only asking you how this would be possible. How are they are able to trick the ISP firewall?

  • What can SNMP be useful for in a small network?

    - by Sanoj
I have been administering servers and clients in small business offices, and have never used SNMP. But I have read about it and it looks interesting. As what I understand, it is mostly useful if you have a bigger network with a lot of network equipment that should be monitored. Is there any useful use cases for SNMP in smaller networks? And is it recommended that I use it?

  • Any third party tools for Rackspace Cloud Monitoring data?

    - by Valien
We have a decent number of Rackspace accounts and I'm adding the RS monitoring agent on most of my production servers. Thing is in order to view a snapshot of what is happening on each server I have to login to that specific account and then click that specific server. I'm wondering if there are any 3rd party tools out there that I can aggregate this data and display it like it's displayed when I login to Rackspace and view it from a dashboard. Anyone know of anything like that?
