• Mesh Networked servers via vpn

  I got a design idea and I would like to have some advice from SF about It. I have 5 customers with small real-estate databases. I've built for them a desktop app and now they would like to merge their database to share their data. I don't want to centralize everything in one place nor I want to do maintenance for servers. They told me also, that all of them in their offices, have little servers and maintenance guys available. Although everything seems suitable for web application, I had the idea to experiment something new: Any customer small-server wild be connected to the others in a sort of mesh network without a single point of failure and through VPNs. If one of the servers went down the customers could still connect to their databases from one of the other mesh networked servers instead of from the local one that is down. During normal operations all the servers sync the db with the others through VPNs. I can accept a half-day timing window of NON synched data, in other words, since I don't need real time synchronization, the server don't have to always stay in synch. I can migrate my data over to other Non-Sql technologies like CouchDB or Redis or whatever you suggest. As you can see I don't have a lot of constraints and although I could go with a web application I would like to delegate and decentralize support, data-privacy and management, as more as I can to my customers offices. Is that a crazy idea? Do you know If something similar exist? Which technology would you suggest?

• Strategy for Incremental Datasource fetchings in Excel

  I am in an scenario with a table that is refresh by a third app every week. I need to keep accumulating all data in Excel, using an ODBC connection to the database. I am wondering Approach 1: Is there a way to force Excel to append results for every update (this update would be triggered according to a parameter that indicates week)? I tried to define the table for which the connection loads using a dynamic reference but once is anchored first time, table position is never redefined Approach 2: Use an ETL to accumulate all weekly results into a staging table and then connect Excel to it in real time. But, I would need a mechanism for caching old data, as I cannot grow exponentially the time Excel opens. Imagine after 10 years, Excel would need to update at opening 10 years fo data before showing it. Is there a way to store already fetched data and increment it at real time (when book is opened) by selecting new data (with a query/filter of something) Thanks EDIT: Maybe it's better to ask it that way: What is the optimal strategy for a table that keeps growing and needs to be read in real time by Excel? I just don't want to fetch absolutely all data after some months...

• MySQL stops accepting connections over 3306, still working on localhost

  I have a MySQL database that stopped accepting connections from my web server altogether. So I SSH'ed into the server and started checking its vitals. The hard disks had plenty of open space, and there was plenty of available memory and swap space. Nothing was eating up the CPU (close to 100% idle). I even connected to MySQL locally and ran a few queries without any issues. But SHOW PROCESSLIST only showed my own connection, no others. Worst of all, in the MySQL log, no errors even remotely coincided with the unavailability of the server. On the web server, I got an error saying "Lost connection to MySQL server during query" at the moment the unavailability started, followed by a bunch of "MySQL server has gone away" errors. There's only one other application on the server that accepts network connections, and I killed that one (in case it was holding too many open connections or something), but it didn't help. Finally I just restarted the MySQL process, and everything is (for now) working again. What else should I check in these circumstances? Any idea what the problem might be? And how might I verify that is in fact the problem?

• How do I connect remotely to SQL Server from Windows client?

  Hi All, Having a bit of an issue connecting to SQL SERVER remotely from Windows. I've verified that all of my settings are correct via SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO EXPRESS and SQL SERVER CONFIGURATION MANAGER. I can connect remotely using ODBC drivers from other OSes (e.g. OS X, Linux, etc). However, when I connect with the same credentials from a remote Windows machine using "SQL SERVER" as the driver I am told that the system cannot connect. I've tried creating an ODBC Data Source and I get the same error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen(InvalidInstance()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Invalid Connection From the non-windows machines I can use the IP address of the SQL Server just fine. However, on the remote Windows machine, neither IP address nor named instance works. FYI, I can create an ODBC Data Source using the named instance on the machine actually running the SQL Server (but this is, of course, nothing special -- just proof that it isn't completely hosed). One interesting note: If I use SQL STUDIO 2005 from a Windows client machine, I can use the IP address to connect remotely. Still, the whole reason I bring this up is because I need to use a software package I've written to connect to SQL Server remotely from Windows machines as well. Previously the solution was only needed to xfer data from SQL Server into a PostGRES or MySQL database on non-Windows machines (due to DBA preference). However, now they also want to move the data from the legacy software to MySQL even on Windows. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Feel free to provide a full example connection string. Best

• MySQL Tables Missing/Corrupt After Recreation

  Hi, Yesterday I dumped my MySQL databases to an SQL file and renamed the ibdata1 file. I then recreated it and imported the SQL file and moved the new ibdata1 file to my MySQL data directory, deleting the old one. I’ve done it before without issue, however this time something is not right. When I examine the (personal, not MySQL config) databases, they are all there, but they are empty… sort of. The data directory still has the .ibd files with the correct content in them and I can view the table list in the databases, but not the tables themselves. (I have file-per-table enabled, and am using InnoDB as default for everything.) For example with the urls database and its urls table, I can successfully open mysql.exe or phpMyAdmin and use urls;. I can even show tables; to see the expected table, but then when I try to describe urls; or select * from urls;, it complains that the table does not exist (even though it just listed it). (The MySQL Administrator lists the databases, but does not even list the tables, it indicates that the dbs are completely empty.) The problem now is that I have already deleted the SQL file (and cannot recover it even after scouring my hard-drive). So I am trying to figure out a way to repair these databases/tables. I can’t use the table repair function since it complains that the table does not exist, and I can’t dump them because again, it complains that the tables don’t exist. Like I’ve said, the data itself is still present in the .ibd files and the table names are present. I just need a way to get MySQL to recognize that the tables exist in the databases (I can find the column names of the tables in question in the ibdata1 file using a hex-editor). Any idea how I can repair this type of corruption? I don’t mind rolling up my sleeves, digging in, and taking a bunch of steps to fix it. Thanks a lot.

• mysql - moving to a lower performance server, how small can I go?

  I've been running a site for a few years now which really isn't growing in traffic, and I want to save some money on hosting, but keep it going for the loyal users of the site and api. The database has one a nearly 4 million row table, and on a 4gb dual xeon 5320 server. When I check server stats on this server with ps -aux, i get returns of mysql running at about 11% capacity, so no serious load. The main query against mysql runs in about 0.45 seconds. I popped over to linode.com to see what kind of performance I could get out of one of their tiny boxes, and their 360mb ram XEN vps returns the same query in 20 seconds. Clearly not good enough. I've looked at the mysql variables, and they are both very similar (I've included the show variables output below, if anybody is interested). Is there a good way to decide on what size server is needed based on what I'm coming from? Is it RAM that is likely making the difference with the large table size? Is there a way for me to figure out how much ram would be ideal?? • Removed Old Domain Trust. Now Progress (9.1D) can't open DB File

  My company has an old server, running Progress 9.1D on a Windows 2000 VM, which was used by our company OS (Vantage 6 by Epicor.) Vantage was our primary OS for a very long time. About 2 years ago, we migrated to a larger, corporate OS and we cancelled our service contract with Epicor. Yesterday, we removed an AD trust between the corporate domain and our old AD domain we used in the days of Vantage. After restarting the virtual server, I have been able to start the ProService for 9.1D Windows service, however, I can not get Vantage to start back up. When I run the application, I get the error in the message listed below. Transcript: ** Could not connect to server for database [progress db file], errno 0. (1432) How can I fix this? FYI, I haven't had to work with Progress in years and even then I wouldn't have considered myself a "novice"-- I'm even less knowledgeable than that title would suggest. Vantage had a lot of internal tools and I recall that Epicor support managed to prevent .pf scripts from being executed. If there was a Progress specific patch that needed to be applied, you had to do it within the Vantage software OR they had to remote into the machine to fix this. I may not be able to run a .pf script but I do know that I can log into the console-based server application. (Yes, I can't even recall which utility that was called. It is sad.) It's been a long time and I never had to digg into Progress that much. Please help and feel free to ask questions. If you need more info, I'll update this post.

• Understanding MySQL Query Caches and when to implement it?

  On our current MySQL server query cache is enabled. Qchache_hits: 31913 Qchache_inserts: 50959 Qchache_lowmem_prunes: 9320 Qchache_not_chached: 209320 Qchache_queries_in_chace: 986 com_update: 0 com_delete: 0 I do not fully understand the Query cache - I am reading about it currently and trying to understand it. Our database holds inventory data, customer data, employee data, sales data and so forth. The query is very rarely run more than once. The possibility of a query being run twice is viewing a specific sales information twice. But basically everything in our system changes constantly. It is always being updated, deleted, insterted and off the top of my head I can't picture users running the same query twice within a week. Do I even need to have the query cache enabled? I am guessing that the inserts means 51k entries have been added, but only 986 of those are being stored? Would an idea be to refresh the cache, and watch it for a week and check how many of the queries in cached are accessed maybe on a weekly basis to see if it is actually returning any benefits? Any help/guidance on this is appreciated, thanks

  Here's the question... Considering 192 trillion records, what should my considerations be? My main concern is speed. Here's the table... The SELECT's will be done much more frequently than the INSERT. However, occasionally I want to add a few hundred records at a time. Load-wise, there will be nothing for hours then maybe a few thousand queries all at once. Don't think I can normalize any more (need the p values in a combination) The database as a whole is very relational. This will be the largest table by far (next largest is about 900k) UPDATE (08/11/2010) Interestingly, I've been given a second option... Instead of 192 trillion I could store 2.6*10^16 (15 zeros, meaning 26 Quadrillion)... But in this second option I would only need to store one bigint(18) as the index in a table. That's it - just the one column. So I would just be checking for the existence of a value. Occasionally adding records, never deleting them. So that makes me think there must be a better solution then mysql for simply storing numbers... Given this second option, should I take it or stick with the first... [edit] Just got news of some testing that's been done - 100 million rows with this setup returns the query in 0.0004 seconds [/edit]

But after submission it reloads the current page as mentioned in the form action. But when I refresh the page to see the comment being added it asks to re submit.   i have just started to study programming and i know already ppl will say why make a so big project like as a SSB game for a noob game development? cuz i always wanted a SSB engine like as Mugen is a fighter game engine but is not like as SSB´s gameplay + is not using 3d models too so i will call it SSBmugen(until i find a better title for it i got afew ideas for titles) also i wanted to make this game so it can use SSBbrawl files(models+animations mainly) the moveset+Stage coding files i wanted to redo cuz so anything can be possible like make a teleporter or a pipe teleporter(like as Super mario bros game) on a stag e or make some stuff there is impossible in SSBbrawl for moveset coding but is not in SSBmugen like make so a char. summon a Clone and the clone will do a attack and then is gone or some attacks/moves also i will make a moveset/stage Coding editor so it will be really easy to make moveset/stages coding for yours 3d models/animations moveset+stage Coding i mean: hitboxes/hurtboxes/moving Stuff/moving bones like cape or hair bones that is moving by wind effects or falling or other stuff like that/other stuff that needed to be coded i have planed to make a editor(for moveset/char. coding) or add the editor in brawlbox for my game so other ppl can easy make moveset/stages Coding to they´s models/animations so it will be easy so even kids can make a custom movesets/stages why using SSBbrawl files?: cuz ppl have made alot of models or textures/custom movesets/custom stages like goku/other anime/not brawl stuff for super smash bros brawl hacking(a.k.a modding) so ppl dont have to redo anything if they wanted to have the custom models or textures/custom movesets/custom stages from SSBbrawl to SSBmugen +there is the program named brawlbox that can open brawl files like model/animations and can edit models or animations and import models from 3ds max to be the right model format for SSBbrawl and i also wanted it so easy to add(a.k.a installer) Recolours or alt. models(like as oneslot doctor mario model over mario´s boneset) or textures/Movesets/new char. slots/new stages so easy so you only needing to download themplace them in right foldername them the right nameStart the gameRecolours or alt. models or textures/Movesets/new char. slots/new stages works an loading right so you wont needing to edit any files for add something so kids/not so smart ppl can easy use the mods other ppl is making/uploading for this game here is the file format i wanted to know if they can be readed/opened if making a game that use these files: .mld0(brawl model file) .chr0(model animation for moving/scale/rota the bones) .srt0(animations for texture like moving eyes or blinking) .vis0(Animations for get polygons to hide/show with visibilitybones on the model there is also some polygons there ) .brres(a file format where stuff like model files or textures or animations is inside) .pac(a file format where the .brres is inside to keep model+textures+model for the shadow in 1 file) .wav (for SoundFX effects or voices to char. or stages) i am sure that one is possible the .wav files is inside a other file format for brawl but that file can´t you add more .wav files inside only replace so i wanted the .wav files outside so its easy to add/replace/remove SoundFX effects or voices to char. or stages .brstm(brawl music file so the music is looped perfect so it loop in middel of the music and not start over again then the music is done) afew more file formats (mainly for the Graphics effects like fire/aura/hit effects if not needing to redo them)so only coding in the editor i will make is needed to be done for port a SSBB hack(a.k.a mod)(moveset/stage coding) to this game wanted the game to be able to load these files and load them right like if loading wait1.chr0(idle animation) it will also load at same time wait1.srt0/wait1.vis0 and all kinda of animations is inside the same .brres file i am needing since it to be able to load the file format i wanted cuz: -the animations can´t be converted to any other animation file format and i dont think ppl want to redo these animations(inc. me for Goku to SSBbrawl) -models can be converted but then they lose all the shader/materials stuff like a shine effect or lighting on the model -.brstm can be converted to .wav but then there will be no loop so i prefer it can load this file format too for the music to stage/menu -brawlbox is really easy to use for make animation for the char. and import models from 3ds max so even around "not too stupid" 10 year kids can make SSBB mods(not try to be rude but to say how easy it is) also i wanted the folder setup for characters/stages/moveset/other stuff to be like this: here is the list: -what game engine should i use to make a SSB clone? but at same time to make all this stuff i just said possible so ppl can make they own mods and share them and use the already made mods from SSBbrawl? and easy to use aswell so noob programmors can use it? -where to learning programming on internet to be even more ready to make a game like this? and dont wanted to start in the small like making small boring 2d games that no one care about anyway ps. i am also planing a other project like as SSBmugen but it will be Super mario bros open (again tittle unsure but open means open source) i will make a Mario game engine that also use 3d models and can have 2d or 3d gameplay with any mario powerups/gameplay(from any mario platform games) there is ever made multiplayer like as in New super mario bros wii maybe multiplay over lan or online but for now over 1 PC also alittle planed for that to my SSBmugen a Level/world map editor for it too(easy to use so even kids can use it and make levels for it) so it just place the objects/enemies and options for them enemies since they are not 100% same AI in all mario game like to choose a goomba have AI from SM64 the Editor will be able to change the gameplay on a level while have a other gameplay on a other level like this: 1 level have Super mario bros 3 gameplay (then it will be a 3d model remake) a other level have super mario galaxy gameplay but in a Super mario 3d land level yet a other level have super mario 64 gameplay but with powerups from a other mario game like powerups from mario 3d land or can ride on Yoshi so you can easy remake your fav. level from a old mario game in this mario engine/editor or just make a custom one with yours fav. mario gameplay/powerups so it will be like turn off/on: walljump/triple jump/other kinda or jumps/2x punch and 1 kick+Air kick/SMG spin attack/Fludd/other stuff like that so you can make the gameplay from the first mario game to the newest or make custom gameplay on a level also the star(from 64/sunshine/galaxy) will be replaced with the flag from new super mario bros/mario 3d land since the game is not so much about getting stars its more about making/download the levels you wanted and share them to other ppl and play these level so after have killed like the boss from SM64 bomb omb field(if one have made that) you will get the flag instead of star since i wanted it to be simple to make levels in the editor to make the bosses/new enemies/new powerups/custom char. idk what to do to make that simple yet also thinking the mario game will use brawl files since it almost already got all needed animations/models for this since i dont wanted to redo animations/models and if needing more animations i can just make them easy in brawlbox since thats the program i am most used to make animations but that will be after my SSBmugen project if not this game will be easyer then SSBmugen to make since i am planing then 1 of them is done i use the that game as base to make the other (since both is kinda platfrom games and possible using same file format for both) also wanted to ask what is best to start with out of these 2 games? also will maybe make a DLC site(or ingame) for both of these games if they get done so it wont end up like as Mugen where you needing to look all over the internet to find the stuff you wanted but for my game all the mods for my game is on same place not sure about online mode for SSBmugen or super mario bros open but i can always add that then i get better at programming both games also need to have options on controls/if using joystick also that i have planed these game for a long time and got even more ideas for them but first i wanted to get them to work so i can add the other stuff later(like DLC or online mode or some other stuff later) right now i know 0,0001% to programming(in my option) maybe i know more then that since i have been study it alittle but i learning while making stuff like this that was also my plan for make these game learn while making them and get better to programming so again i say it i kinda dont want to hear dont do these projects cuz i already know it will be hard so dont wanted so much to heard stuff like: you can´t do it since you just started learning programming or this project will fail since somewhere i needing to get started with programming and   I have about 4 or 5 accounts with WebHost4life.com, these are all my customers that based on my recommendation have been hosting with webhost4life.com. A few days ago for some reason they decided to migrate one of these accounts to a new server. They moved everything created a new database on the new server but the new database is empty. after spending hours with Tech support they acknowledged the problem and assured me it will take up to an hour or two and my database will be populated with the data. this was about 7 hours ago. Oh by the way I pay extra for the backup plan and yes you guessed it, none of my backups are there. Needless to say I’m very scared and disappointed. No one is responding to my emails  or phone calls. After searching the web, I found out, this has happened before, in some cases it took them days to fix the problem and many never got it resolved and switched hosting companies, I would love to do that but I need my 2 GB database before I start shopping around for a new hosting company. Stay away from Webhost4life.

I'm developing a software for 1 year and few months, it's for the food industry, more exactly a software to: Delivery, Take Way, Table Reservation, POS, Accounts Payable and Receivable, Prints(receipt), Kitchen Monitors Orders, Customers Orders Control and Fiscal Area. Well, I had separated the software mainly in two areas, one is web area and the other is desktop area (Used by Admins only) and local installed. 1 - Web Area (Basically do the follow:) Show Catalog with the products Customers Make Orders Customers Pay for the Orders etc ... as mentioned above 2 - Desktop Area Manage Orders Manage Customers Manage Suppliers Manage Accounts Payable and Receivable etc ... as mentioned above The web area is hosted in an online web server (scripts and database are online). The Desktop area is hosted locally in a Linux machine with a local database and local scripts files. My question is: Is it possible to keep only one Database for both applications? • Can spliting an access database cause printer and reporting issues?

  We have a setup in which our users log into an access database using MS Access 2003 over an RDP connection. The user's login to their own machines first using a roaming profile. They then click an rdp connection file on the desktop and login to the remote server, via RDP, where they use MS Access as the shell; they don't have any access to any of explorer.exe features such as the start menu. The database they are logging into is more of an application, and provides functionality for entering data, querying data, and running reports via form based menus. It all worked pretty well until we split the database as it was nearing 2GBs in size. We moved out the payroll data into a separate partition, a database with the same name in a different folder, both of them on the server. Only two tables were moved into this new database partition, and they were re-linked as external tables in the new partition. Now while everything appears to be working fine data-wise after the split, there's a new issue when our users login via RDP and attempt to run reports: often the report will not display and instead the user sees an error about the click event of the form. At first I didn't even know it was printer-related, as we didn't really change anything related to the printers as far as I knew. Confused about the error, I talked to the guy who previously worked here and who was in charge of splitting the database, and he told me to tell the users to set their default printers (on their local machines, not on the server) to the "printer" Microsoft XPS Document Writer which isn't a physical printer at all. This allowed the user's to display their reports, but if they want to print out reports, they are required to go to the File menu and select Print, clicking the print icon on the toolbar takes them to a Save As... dialog as would be expected when using the Microsoft XPS Document Writer as your default printer. It's easy to tell if the user is having a problem because a quick mouseover of the printer icon will yield a tooltip of (none) when they cannot access their reports, and a tooltip of Microsoft XPS Document Writer when they can view the reports. If the user's printer is set to anything other than Microsoft XPS Document Writer as the default on their local machine, then (none) is always displayed when they rdp to the database. The RDP settings are setup to transfer the local printer to the server. Telling the users to do this to print has been more of a band-aid on the whole situation until we find a better solution and an explanation as to why splitting a database would prevent users from printing or even viewing access database reports. Which is why I'm here asking this question. Also of note all the printers on the network now show up on the server so that when the users do click File->Print to print their reports on a physical printer, they have to look through a huge list of printers to find theirs in the dropdown. So the little band-aid fix we have is not ideal. Previously, only the printers on the user's local machine displayed here, and not all the printers on the network. My co-worker seems to think this has something to do with permissions, I personally think it has to do with roaming profiles, and Group Policies which is what I've been reading up on. I really don't know how to fix this or how it is related to splitting the database.

  Good day to all; I'm developing a program using JSF2 and JPA2 (OpenJPA). Im also using IBM Rapid App Dev't v8 with WebSphere App Server v8 test server. I have two simple entities, Employee and Department. Each Department has many Employees and each Employee belongs to a Department (using deptno and workdept).
