• Can't get to the login screen

- by Rod
I upgraded my wife's Windows 7 machine, to Windows 8 Pro, about 10 days ago. She's been using it fine ever since. We typically leave our desktops running 24/7, and just turn off the monitor. This morning she turned the monitor on, and saw the screen with the Seattle Space Needle, and then she pressed the enter key to get to the login screen. Nothing happened. Next she pressed the mouse key. Nothing happened. The mouse moves around fine. But we can't get it past the Seattle Space Needle screen. She replaced the batteries in both her keyboard and mouse recently. So, what's going on? How do we fix it?

• Technology to communicate with someone with expressive aphasia?

- by rascher
A family member had a stroke a few years back and now has expressive aphasia. She understands what is said to her, is cognitive of what is going on, but cannot express herself. She is able to respond to yes/no questions (do you want to go shopping? are you looking for your earrings?) She is not, however, able to read (English is not her native language and she hasn't read Hindi for decades.) I am the technologist in the family, and I intend to come up with something to help us communicate. The idea is to have some sort of picture book where she can point to what she wants. My first question: does some sort of assistive technology for people with expressive aphasia already exist? These can be hardware or software devices? If not, then such a software doesn't seem difficult to write. My initial thought is to have an interface with pictures - maybe separated by category (food, shopping) - where she can point to an individual picture to indicate what she needs. We could easily add more items with such a software, and we could have an interface where she (or we) could "flip pages". Which suggests that the best solution would use a touch screen rather than a mouse. It would be really difficult to train her to aim a mouse or find keys on a keyboard. We're thinking of maybe getting a tablet and writing some basic software. But tablets computers are expensive and fragile - I'm not sure if it would be able to stand spills or being knocked about in a nursing home. So my next question: what kind of tablet-like devices are out there which I can program on? I don't know anything about hardware, but if there is something then we could special-order it. What would be safe and durable for such a project? We could do something on an iPod or cell phone, but I feel like that interface would be too small. Finally, does anyone here have experience with this kind of assistive technology? Things I might not anticipate when designing such a system? edit I've added a (pretty hefty!) bounty. I'd kinda like to open this question up to any suggestions, comments, and experiences that people might have. This is a pretty real and important project, so while we will (are working on) a solution, any insights would be particularly helpful. Right now the plan is to mount a screen in her room. We'll either teach her to use a trackball or use a touch-screen panel, after seeing what she is able to use with a simple prototype. • How do I uninstall a ruby version installed via source?

- by Aaron McIver
I installed a version (1.9.3-p194) of ruby via source using make install and realized this may have been the wrong route to take. Upon doing this, I realized this was a mistake and I should be using a solution such as rvm to address my ruby versions within the OS. I looked to see if an uninstall existed to be ran in conjunction with make and it didn't. I then proceeded to install rvm and add the aforementioned version in to my list of managed rubies within rvm which is not listed as ext-ruby-1.9.3-p194. rvm rubies ext-ruby-1.9.3-p194 [ x86_64 ] =* ruby-1.9.3-p194 [ x86_64 ] # => - current # =* - current && default # * - default** When I perform an rvm remove, it simply removes it from the rubies list however it still exists within /usr/local/bin. I am not concerned with the system install ruby version residing in /usr/bin as I understand that is tied to the OS and should simply be ignored. How can I safely uninstall/remove the aforementioned version and all the places in which it was installed, short of looking at the install script?

• What happened to the .NET version definition with v4.0?

- by Tom Tresansky
I'm building a C# class library, and using the beta 2 of Visual Web Developer/Visual C# 2010. I'm trying to save information about what version of .NET the library was built under. In the past, I was able to use this: // What version of .net was it built under? #if NET_1_0 public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET 1.0"; #elif NET_1_1 public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET 1.1"; #elif NET_2_0 public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET 2.0"; #elif NET_3_5 public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET 3.5"; #else public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET version unknown"; #endif So I figured I could just add: #elif NET_4_0 public const string NETFrameworkVersion = ".NET 4.0"; Now, in Project-Properties, my target Framework is ".NET Framework 4". If I check: Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().ImageRuntimeVersion I can see my runtime version is v4.0.21006 (so I know I have .NET 4.0 installed on my CPU). I naturally expect to see that my NETFrameworkVersion variable holds ".NET 4.0". It does not. It holds ".NET version unknown". So my question is, why is NET_4_0 not defined? Did the naming convention change? Is there some simple other way to determine .NET framework build version in versions 3.5?

• What are the constraints on Cocoa Framework version numbers?

- by Joe
We're distributing a Cocoa framework with regular updates. We'll be updating the version numbers with each release. The Apple documentation appears to suggest that version numbers should be consecutive incrementing integers. We are distributing output in several formats, and the framework is only one of them. We would rather not have to maintain a separate numbering system just for our frameworks. We don't really care about the precise format of the version numbers of the framework, so long as they change whenever the product changes, and behave in a correct and expected manner. I'm looking for a sensible and correct way of avoiding having to run a separate version number counter. One suggestion is that for product version 12.34.56 we could simply remove the dots and say the framework version is 123456. Is there a constraint on the type of number that can be represented (uint? long?) Does it have to be a number? Could it be a string? Do the numbers have to be consecutive? Is there a standard way of doing things in this situation?

• In WPF, how do I get a command in a Control Template to bind to a property in a parent?

- by Keith
I am relatively new to WPF and sometimes it makes my head explode. However, I do like the power behind it, especially when used with the MVVM model. I have a control template that contains a button. I use that control template inside of a custom control. I want to add a property on the custom control that will bind to the command property of the button inside the control template. Basically, it is a combo box with a button to the right of it to allow a user to pop up a search dialog. Since this control could appear on a usercontrol multiple times, I need to be able to potentially bind each control to a different command (Searh products, search customers, etc). However, I have been unable to figure out how to do this Here is some sample XAML <Style TargetType="{x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}"> <Setter Property="LookupTemplate" Value="{StaticResource LookupTemplate}" /> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}"> <Border BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderThickness}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Control.Padding}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderBrush}" Background="{TemplateBinding Panel.Background}" SnapsToDevicePixels="True" Focusable="False"> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" MinWidth="0" SharedSizeGroup="{Binding LabelShareSizeGroupName, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:BaseFieldControl}}}" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="1*" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" SharedSizeGroup="{Binding WidgetsShareSizeGroupName, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:BaseFieldControl}}}" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <!-- Customized Value Part --> <ComboBox x:Name="PART_Value" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4,2,0,1" SelectedValue="{Binding Path=SelectionField.Value, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" IsEnabled="{Binding Field.IsNotReadOnly, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" Visibility="{Binding Field.IsInEditMode, Converter={StaticResource TrueToVisible}, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" FontFamily="{StaticResource FontFamily_Default}" FontSize="11px"> <ComboBox.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <VirtualizingStackPanel IsVirtualizing="True" VirtualizationMode="Recycling"/> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ComboBox.ItemsPanel> </ComboBox> <StackPanel Grid.Column="2" Orientation="Horizontal" Name="PART_Extra" Focusable="False"> <ContentControl Name="PART_LookupContent" Template="{Binding LookupTemplate, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" Focusable="False"/> </StackPanel> </Grid> </Border> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> I thought I could get it to work by doing something like this <Button Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type SelectionFieldControl}}, Path=ShowSearchCommand}" Margin="2" /> but it does not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
